  • In Bangladesh, men desperate for work perform one of the world's most dangerous jobs. They demolish huge ships in grueling conditions, braving disease, pollution, and the threat of being crushed or stabbed by steel sliced from the hulls.

@@balasujithpotineni8184 they don't have to take the jobs in by the order of first world countries, the employer of these guys is probably a Bangladeshi company who makes the cheapest offer of shipwrecking for the shipping companies at the expense of their employees. If they set their pricing higher, they could afford better environment for the workers. But the ethics in the country or the company doesn't seem to require that I see. The company could turn a very good profit but doesn't bother to treat employees well.

A ship made in bangledish will not pass US coastguard regulations. Not to mention each year the regulations become more strict. Once a ship is built and comes out of shipyard it’s technology is already out of date because of the research and development that continues to go on. Company’s spend millions just to comply with national and worldwide standards that are always increasing. As the video stated Bangledish has no safety standards rendering a ship made there unusable and a huge liability. Also the Jones Act states that only ships made in America can sail between US ports. Country’s with commerce like China and Japan Allready have shipyard that comply with world regulations making bangledish outdated.

They wouldn't need to go to the IMF. Any bank would be willing to lend to a money-making operation. But if the business becomes more efficient, the fewer people it would employ. There are many that would argue that having half as many people earning a middle class wage is better than twice as many people living hand-to-mouth. The middle class would spend and stimulate the economy for the rest. But some business owners either don't see it that way or they're too greedy. Henry Ford saw the big picture. He paid his workers well.

If you think prayer doesn't work, just try it. You may be surprised at the results. I suggest praying for something reasonable and not something unlikely such as having a million dollars accidentally deposited into your bank account. That's a greedy prayer anyhow. Keep in mind that some prayer answers are "no" or "wait" ... and a prayer for God's will to be done in your life is the best prayer of all. I can't run off to a foreign shipyard to help, but I do have social action projects that I handle here at home via the internet. Since I can't directly change conditions for those working men, I will pray for them instead.

So they have a job because of people that need stuff? Phones an almost everything. Remember. If there was no demand for products there would be people with less jobs. Im not saying that they should work like this. There should be better working conditions for everyone but a job is a job. The things a human is willing to do for family and survival.

The point he's trying to make jackass is that you shouldn't take anything for granted, even a phone... The fact that somebody worked super hard and long for cheap labor to make a phone for you to just blow $300 like it was nothing proves that most us of don't face the hardships that the other half of the world does... That the epitome of survival is literally still happening in 3rd world countries while u sit back in the AC and complain about your 9-5 job....

Several factors make this profitable in bangladesh.
    A) The beach is very flat and when the tide rolls out you can easily access the ship. Not too many places on earth like that.
    B) Labor is cheap. That's their fault not ours which is why they do this dangerous job.
    C) This is alot of steel not to recycle it. Blame it on the green movement then.
    D) I bet the 'owner' of this shipyard is muslim too so he's not feeling compelled to make the conditions better and safer because it cut deeply into his profits. Ultimtely dangerous jobs should be done by robots. Till then cheap humans have to do it.

Yes, that's what i thought at first too, but think about it though.
They are work-related deaths. My father was a construction worker for almost 40 years. Safety standards are pretty low in my country also. He participated in thousands of construction projects, met tens of thousands of workers like him, yet he can't remember even a single fatality happening during his entire carrier. There where some injuries though (he had a few himself too), but only a few of them serious.

    • @Dgannt

I think that is 15 workers death at the sites. I would guess many many more die of other diseases from chemicals and also many injured seriously from accidents. Just wading in that contaminated dirt and clay or breathing in all kind of chemicals every day can not be good for your health. And all the asbestos they mentioned.

***** Right! The need to feed, house and cloth their families, and themselves, doesn't factor into your opinion. Those essentials/niceties are reserved only for the rich Western nations.
The fact that they're poor does not negate their rights to a safe living/work environment.
What this comes down to is the rich West (Canada, UK, Australia, Germany, US etc.) exploiting the most needy people on the planet rather than helping them out of poverty.

That's how we avoid becoming like these people. Believe it or not in my own country the UK workers rights were similar to these, being paid peanuts in dangerous factories and mines. But it's only through a long process of protests, labour unions and workers rights acts did things start to get better.
