The Ship Breakers of Bangladesh: VICE INTL
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 лис 2024
- There aren't too many places left in the world where the practice of ship breaking-scrapping old ships for metal-can still exist. These days, environmental and labor regulations in the developed world have displaced the practice to India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, where cargo carriers are salvaged for their steel.
The largest vessels wind up on the shores of the city of Chittagong in Bangladesh, where the industry has become a vital part of the country's urbanization. It employs roughly 200,000 workers and supplies the country with 80 percent of its steel. Ship breakers beach and dismantle vessels daily wearing flip-flops and T-shirts. It's no easy task, considering ships are constructed to withstand the elements for the 30 years they spend operating on international waters. We decided to check it out.

You can tell that kid is a brilliant kid. Hope he finds his way out of that mess someday.
Me too
I hope he does too, but in reality he wont. And if he survives neither will his children...very sad but those wealthy families keep that money to themselves not supporting education for the poor to rise up because they need workers and don't want any competition
He will become a master of this trade and soon will have many employees under his watch..
There is no way out for many there. Why do they continue? I think it's their spiritual belief that this toil is temporary.
Reylan Omalza u mean... employees who will face the same dangers.?
he’s gotta rise to an owner level to do anything meaningful
Fuck... i need to appreciate living in a 1st world country more.
I agree. The problem is, you're surrounded by equally well-of people. We're way beyond the point of having our basic needs met, but humans only look to how they fare in the context of the society they partake in. And poor people often have big families which can be a source of fulfillment in itself, whereas westerners are becoming increasingly isolated; not just in their close relationships, but also towards their neighbors.
developed country****
school mate if you were born in a third world country, you wouldn't know how screwed up your life is since it's all you know. Secondly, these guys'd rather sacrifice themselves for their family rather than leaving them to mourn over them.
school Wow why do you really hate living in America?
Children in Africa could have eaten those ships.
Thank you for:
1) Informing about this
2) Subtitles instead of dubbing
3) The shots of people smiling around 8:40
Ok this is very late, but I agree, the subbing is something I don't see in a few news networks and very much dislike it as I think it takes the legitimacy of what's being said out
@@raika4070 It also interrupts a lot of what’s going on the background, it breaks the immersion of the situation and kinda of dampens the seriousness of it when a different person is telling it over in a bland and monotone voice.
I said “this is beautiful” out loud when the 8:40 park rolled
😊😊xxsz😊 xx zz❤xx
Isn't it crazy how even though they live a life we couldn't even handle but they all still had smiles on thier faces it makes me realise how much I take for granted
True. We have to take advantage of all the opportunities that we have here in developed nations and maybe help the world in return in the future.
OceanBlue
i see your point but Ali did the same thing when he was drafted and was ridiculed over it but after he died every one praised him as a hero. Oh the hypocrisy!
OceanBlue
Everyone praised him for standing up against an unjust war. Black people were treated better in Nazi Germany than in America during WWII. And yeah America is the greatest country, you know why? Because of freedom of speech.
OceanBlue
Wow you assume way too much. Why do you think I'm a Bernie Sanders supporter? Lol. I fucking hate politics, the President is just a figure head, thats it. Theyre not really in control of things. And Vietnam was an unjust war, just ask any of the veterans or watch some interviews of the soldiers during the war. Complete waste of time and human lives, especially since the US pulled out and lost the war in the end. Vietnam is a Communist country, news flash! Sounds like you've been brainwashed by all that hoo rah propaganda. Canada is awesome dude, but I wouldn't move there lol, I like America, or at least where I reside anyway. You sound like a typical ignorant flag waving idiot.
OceanBlue
Oh so blacks were treated better in Nazi Germany because they were the minority? NEWS FLASH, they ARE the minority every where in this country, doesn't mean they are treated well in a different country where they are ALSO the minority. And please black crime wasn't nearly as bad as it is today. Blacks had to defend their lives from racist bigot whites in the south for no other reason except that their skin was a different color. And segregation exists also in the Norther cities as well. Look at Chicago for instance. I truly believe it starts with education and blacks don't get the same quality education in the inner city compared to white suburbia. There are exceptions still so you cant just generalize an entire race of people.
I just wonder how much, if anything, that film crew paid that kid. They probably had enough in their wallets to feed that family for a year.
1bishw probably nothing
them having money would be even more dangerous than not having it... if it got out they had money in that part they would be robbed in a heart beat
Joe West exactly. And that’s why journalists are not allowed to intervene on what they are reporting. They can just document the reality of the situation.
I bet they gave that kid 43$ and a skittle
Axel de Blois this is not the jungle you fucking idiot.
Feel for this kid, stepping up to support his mom and brother risking his life for pennys. Great character wish him and his family nothing but the best. Hope it gets better for them all. Make me appreciate life more just watching this.
And I thought working at target sucks
Damn do you still work at target?
Should’ve gone to college dumbass now your stuck working for minimum wage
W3rde V2.0 there are scholarships available
Brad Wang honestly to call smart fool makes you sound like one😂. Fuck off triggered boiii
@@DanielW607 what? Lol...well now we know you didn't go to college either
Damn, as a welder/warehouse worker my heart cries for these men who deserve to get paid at least 5x more than what I make. The fact that they literally get paid a fraction of what I make for a job that is EXTREMELY dangerous is a human rights disaster.
No . every country is different. These ppl can't make anything .they only knows how to make kids
What you make in one hour, the'll make in a one week.
A welders per diem would be their monthly salary
I am in awe of that 16 year-old's character, and those around him.
I am simply in awe.
I am living chittagong,, THIS Ship breaking destroy our most most old nature

You have phone? How ucan afford?
Hope your doing good in Chittagong
we send ships over there to get them cheaply taken appart, and then for really low prices we rebuy the metal and ship it back and so on.
Yeah it's sickening that we would have the technology to do all this work pretty much only with machines/robots. But it's still cheaper to have poor people work themselves to death do this job.
cyanit42 and what are they going to do if we take this from them?
how are they going to survive
THIS IS THE ONLY THING THEY HAVE.
Jon Stark yeah, to poison themselves with asbest and other deadly substances. Sad shit.
Jukka Kammer this is a sad world my friend
get used to it.
Jon Stark The more we decide to "get used to it" instead of fighting to change it, the worse off the entire species will be. Change can definitely happen, but with attitudes like these, the future is bleak and hopeless. Your surrender garauntees countless more generations of limitless suffering. Unfortunately, your attitude is the most widespread and dominant one and so humanity remains as cruel and hopeless as it ever was.
I felt bad when the kid got yelled at to not touch the toolbox. He seems more mature and smart than a lot of kids his age in the US
I thought the same thing 😭
More mature and smart than a lot of adults too
This place was wealthiest in the Indian subcontinent before British colonization.
Desoldering Pump and they were ship builders instead of breakers at the time. And a trading hub being a part of the silk road. Sort of like what Singapore is today.
Yeah, and one of the wealthiest in the world, with such culture... Now we're backwards, divided and failing.
Though maybe we'll start doing things right, who knows.
I think the biggest issue for that country is the shitting out kid after kid with no way to support them! The parents always talk about how their concerned for their children's futures. They should of thought about that before they fucked!
+BrokenRRT *they're
Lol... what bullshit. This country was never rich, the people there still have the same shitty living condition.
I work as a welder in a shipyard here in japan and this video is the opposite of everything we do.No safety,No precautions And
No PPE’s. This is Sad:(
I will NEVER complain about my Job again.
yes yes...
You Will
I work as an asbestos and lead inspector and standard regulation in the US is less than 1% asbestos in any material is considered hazardous and needs to be remediated properly and safely so seeing these people working with so much asbestos exposing themselves, this makes me really sad, very unfortunate :(
Also looking at these ships, likely dates back in the early 1900s, those ships are full of asbestos and lead, they used asbestos for just about everything specially for thermal insulation so those pipes must be full of asbestos, asbestos didn’t get banned till 1970s
Yeah it’s a foolish enterprise in so many ways. It’s a damn shame...
Its really disheartening to read all these comments that try to poke fun or insult these people for their misfortune.
Its probably the same mentality that people up top have as well of most of us of our "disposable" lives and our environment. Profit above everything, nothing else really matters.
Most of us bitch and complain about our daily lives and work and then go home and get on the internet just to leave a nasty comment because we think it is "funny". This just shows how out of place our whole society is.
SJW
Biankito we are all brainwashed slaves all over the world, it looks disheartening but we are on the same boat...few elites using us as puppets...do you really think people on the usa live way better then these folks?
they have better conditions but still they have to work hard every fuckin day just to survive.
futmut1000
doesn't change the fact that people watching this video say some despicable things.
Biankito All Im saying is they need to learn to use condoms, seriously. the birth rate is off the wall, the cant support themselves already then bangladesh needs to enforce a thing like china were a couple only has 1 child. no joke in it at all.
Avelier Plays thank you
I'm from Belize central America and i feel so sad watching this and i pray for Bangladesh!!✌🙏🌎
They are going through the same process that the UK had in the 1800s, they propably wont be getting better job conditions before they start to unionize themselfs.
True..!
This is not aimed at you specifically GVM, just my thoughts about the subject matter and your idea about unions:
Unions just transfer some of the power from the owners of these large business to the union leaders and "connected" people within the union. Poor people are always going to be fucked because that is how things are set up on purpose, not by accident and any kind of upward movement is based on delegating the poor status to someone else rather than obliterating it. Unions do one thing and say a different thing - just like any other political movement based on egalitarian values which are unachievable in a low technology environments. If you burn coal for electricity there is always going to be someone mining coal.
It's a zero sum game - for the people in the video to move up a social class locally it means someone else needs to take their place so it's a vicious cycle.
Social advancement ala the american dream is only doable if you go even further from the zero sum game into literary going to the top by standing on a giant pile of bodies - either as a nation or personally. The metaphor scales pretty well here.
That is how the UK went through the 1800's, on a pile of immigrant bodies.
The US went further with the concept and maintained slavery till the very end to support their own industrial era.
In the end all that suffering is to meet the demand of the everyday guy in the west, not the rich guy in the west.
The rich guy in the west buys stuff made by regular guy in the west, it's the regular guy in the west that buys cheap stuff made by slave labour in the east.
It's very easy to bitch about rich people who can't hear us and don't care - maybe they make the decisions but it is us who carry this stuff out and all of us are responsible.
Military service is not compulsory anymore in many countries yet armies are strong in numbers as ever - how long are we going to pretend that we all live under the iron fist of some rich fuckers instead of speaking truth not to imaginary power but to those around us who are silently fucking everyone over, the high pressure salesmen, the fashion people, the tv bullshiters, the peddlers of cheap imported crap sold at large markups, the insurance peddlers and so on and so forth.
Bangladesh like any other poverty stricken place in the world is ultimately not going through what the UK went through in the 1800's but is going through what UK, the US, China and other large powers are going through right now. It's outsourced poverty!
Vote with your money, care about those who you can reach personally (don't outsource care to charities), don't buy shit and don't buy good stuff sourced immorally either since that ultimately is shit too, it's just a longer piece of string to unwind before you reach suffering down the line.
My 2 cents adjusted for inflation, real estate revaluation, interest rate corrected and sourced from the EU/outside of the EU...
Borys Pomianek Agreed on the there is still poverty and there will be poverty for a long time after today. But I see it differently than you do. When you think about the effects of western sourced capitalism, you might get the picture that its only extracting wealth and thus what you say "outsourcing poverty" to other countries. But when you start to think what those countries like Bangladesh, who are the victims of this outsourcing, would be without the excistance of the effects that are brought by globalisation and capitalism (meaning, the same khind of job that is shown in the video) They would propably be largerly a agricultural society. They would propably live sparcely and produce just enough food for themselfs and their family. Now the situation that they are in now is most definetly worse (in some sense thouhg, better) than that agricultural society. But the difference lies between the difference in potential economic growth. A more industrial society has much more potential economic growth than a agricultural society. Its just that Bangladesh doesnt have the infrastructure, capital and culture of a full industrial society to start industrializing more efficently. Once they start that, their living conditions will improve.
Unions are a political group and their excistance is important. Once governmets start taking unions more seriously, they will start implementing minimal wage limits, safety regulations, workhour and age limitations. Whilst it wont make poor people rich, it will make the poor people have better living conditions.
Graf Von Muffintof It's not like we rich westerners hold them on that standard... we couldn't live our lifes at such a low cost if those workers at these salary levels would demand higher salaries when those countries would develop further.
Graf Von Muffintof Interesting. That's actually a really good take on it.
A big respect for the country an for the people’s in Bangladesh
This is very interesting to me. It's crazy how safe and regulated we have things here in the US. We've come a long way and many people have paid the ultimate price to get where we are. These guys over there deserve so much more than what they're given. They put their lives on the line everyday and do it so selflessly.
I've been through a few safety orientations and we always talk about the most important thing, getting home to your families at the end of the day. These guys, with their noses to the ground, bust their ass and take on so much risk to try to support themselves and their families.
Foreign policy should be focused on making things like this right. We get shit on in the US if some dirty water washes down the road from a jobsite, yet these ships are being torn apart in the ocean.
One day the whole Earth will have the ability to not only participate in an equal economy, but will have the means to work under the same regulations, and the same standards. I hope I get to see that.
SHERMAN YOUNG Everyone is weak compared to these people.
James Gray the New World Order will promise that and deliver equality in slavery to the ultra elite
go fuck yourself usa trash... your country is a shithole too
Remember that this is how this country and how these people survive, this is all apart of the development of a country. Eventually these regulations will exist but if you force them too early then you could wreck the industry entirely
Another Alt Alt communist alert stfu you ain’t harder than this glock bitch
Man, this is horrible. I would love to hear this turn from a sad story to a feel good story of the enviroment for the workers changing into a safe industry.
Not many things stun me, but this...I have no words to describe what is happening here. The little things. Like running a cutting torch with flip flops on. Climbing rickety ladders with chains slung over their shoulders, grinding with no safety goggles. The list goes on. $3 a day to work from sun up to sun set? Fucking hell, that is a despicable.
+Täking Thë High Roäd the economy is so bad over here that general people will take any job as long as it provides themselves and their families....why else to you think clothing brands such as H&M send their fabrics to garment industries here?
Edwin Peng I know what it is, it is still fucking deplorable
Charlie Foxtrot The 3rd I work in the port of Rotterdam (Botlek Haven). I work there, my job is to help empty bull carriers (not those big ones). Like inland motor freightners, coasters, sea ships with 40.000 tons. When you have the sea ships from 40.000 tons, they are very high, when you need to go on top of those ships we also use a ladder (the boat crew will always provide us with a ladder since it is also a Pilot* ladder). Those ladders are the same shitty ladders (we dont wear climbing things when we climb the ladders) as you see in the video. But I have nothing to say because I have protective gear, I earn 5 Euro's a hour and im only 16 years old. Those people are 14/50 or something and they earn 3 dollars a day. Unbelieveble!
* A pilot is a person who drives the ships into the port, because they know the rules and know how and where to sail in the canals into the port. You can't enter the port without a pilot, every ship that come to the port needs a pilot
Daniekje Pols Im 16 and get £6 from mcdonalds

Theses children are men, real men. It’s sad they have to be men at such a young age. My heart goes out to them and it makes me appreciate what I have even more.
I remember watching a documentary about this like 10 years ago.
Business is still thriving I can tell!
3 bucks a day. thats bullshit. This is a job that should be like 27 bucks an hour.
In USD, I think $27 would even be low.
+KingreX32 I am from Bangladesh and I met people who earns 1.25$ a day on average!
+neam09 thats bull dude. I literally just left a job because the pay wasnt worth the work.
Our system is fucked up, no doubt. But you also have to consider the idea, that developing nations like Bangladesh/India are like the dumping ground for the developed ones, until these countries reach a certain level in economic development and all.
+neam09 so the steel you guys cut from those ships, do you sell them back to other countries or do you ues them to build up your country?
I could see hundreds of people living on one of those ships.
I see my country is developing like from these scrap metals to a new ship, as long as all hands are working together we will be a greater nation soon. see britain, japan now, once they were also like this. Hats off my brothers for all your hard work, don`t shed a drop of tear, success is near at gate. May Allah bless us all. Long Live Sacred Bangladesh. Peace
“It’s not an easy job, there are hardships.”
Here in Canada (as elsewhere) we have cleaned the crap off old ships then sunk them as artificial reefs and sport diving attractions. Seems too work ok and helps the marine habitat. Have a safe day:)
Yeah the contrasts in the world are funny yet terrifying, Canada(many other developed countries aswell) strips the harmful stuff off and then sinks the hull for "fish welfare", meanwhile in Bangladesh they have shittier conditions than FUCKING FISH. Yay humanity!
Where is the balance. I can't imagine how bad it is in some of these country's and we have the nerve to bitch about trivial crap. I guess we are living in the "end times" Stay safe:)
Rodd Wayne well if your ancestors hadn't killed the natives and taken their land, you'd probably be in a shitty country in europe.
True! I am just glad the Natives don't hold what my great grandfather did too theirs against me.
***** wonder why so many immigrants want to come to 'shitty europe' then?
This shit's kinda surreal. I looked up the ship names (Princess Vanya and Atlantic Trader) out of curiosity @8:12 and it's weird how these things are tracked, both showing "last location" near Chittagong. They weren't very old, either; both built in 1989. But otherwise they have a huge history helping keep the world connected, just to be beached and slowly cut apart for scrap. A testament to how time doesn't give a shit about legacy or whatever haha.
illitero there is a internatiol rule that says ships needs an AIS. AIS is a tracker system where ypu can see the name and the location of the ship (every boat has one) if u dont have one and the harbour police knoes it, the company will receive a bill. Those ships had also an AIS, and the last known location was Chittagong. You can also turn the AIS off.
I understand the system and its purpose, haha. When I said it was crazy they were tracked, I was talking about the emotional aspect and the perspective of being able to see what is essentially their lives and status; seeing where they've gone and the distance over the globe they've covered to bring goods from one continent to another and being such a humongous part of what brings the world together. Just to be unceremoniously beached and slowly cut to shreds when their scrap value is more appealing than their service value.
Dude no one cares shut up
angelo c this was three years ago you fuckface

Being Bengali, and I'm quite familliar with the Chittagong dialect as i've lived there for a while, I've go to say that VICE really puts a lot of words in the subtitles that they didn't say, and they omit a lot of things that they did say. The translation substiles really do not show the true feelings of these people.

Ignorance and desperation is a bad combination. They are surviving but at a great cost.

@Sourabh Ghosh Every country has people like that, not just Bangladesh. And yeah, we may live our lives according to the quran, and yeah there is extremism, but Bangladesh is way better in that department than other majority Muslim countries. In short, you can't generalise a whole country because of the work of a few people.
This is a deeper and darker subject than it looks. And it deserves more than 10 minutes. There's a RT documentary about it, I recommend watching it. There are some interesting things revealed about Shahin in it as well.

I am an American by passport. I was born in Bangladesh, a country fighting since it gained it’s independence from Pakistan ! A fight against poverty, hunger and human rights . Today after 49 years since our independence we are now the 29th largest economy in the world . Second largest exporter of readymade garments product in the world . most importantly the fastest growing GDP in the world ! We will over come poverty and grow faster than ever . Thank you vice for this documentary.
These guys are one of the hardest workers and they still smile, look at the. U.S.
It breaks my heart to see what these people are going through to just survive.
Holy shit that kid was like 16 years old and the 16 year old in America go party and shit
Red its tne same here in Australia.
This video and other documentaries on vice news channel makes any first world problem irrelevant lol... Anyone of these people in this video is a stronger human being than us. That humble kid is probably a more stronger man than I will ever be... Can't imagine myself living like that..
Man. Kinda makes one feel better about working at the local fast food huh?
Probably the saddest VICE video I have seen yet. I hope that working conditions get better for the people of Bangladesh, especially the shipworkers. They are trying to work to make ends meet and have to work in herendous conditions. And there are kids working there too... 😔
Whats really annoying is having a new batch of hipster journalists come in every 2 months
Best and most respectful, beautifully filmed {and accurate} documentary is one from Canada simply called ''Shipbreakers''..But at least this isn't too hipster-ish, and focusses on the people, not the journalist.
No need to invest on a background music on this documentary. The videos itself will bring to the mood
this kid most likely lost his job because he talked to news outlet. they have a very strict policy not to let news outlets in on whats going on over there in fear of stricter regulations for their business.
Everyone shows negative things -_-
And those who r commenting shit abt BD
"Bangladesh was ranked as 11th happiest country in the world in 2012

It's good to see someone reporting these things from the very poorest countries of the world
5:00 this is like a dystopian version of a kid showing you all the stuff in their room.
Education is key to a better life
+SoCalFreelance No it's not. What matters is , who your family is.
+Indigo baloon Nooooo...think of all the people who are first to graduate from college. They are no longer doing menial work like their family members before them. Think of all the successful business men that grew up in abject poverty.
+SoCalFreelance 65% of bangladeshi are educated and education is free in bangladesh
+labib I would hazard to guess those 65% aren't ship breakers
SoCalFreelance but food is not free. so yes some people do this things.
I can promise you that your stat of only two workers a month death toll is incorrect. People die in these yards almost daily.
Everyone who is saying "Thanks White People" didn't really pay attention to this video. Did you hear the comment made that the local Bangladeshi families who own the companies are wildly rich? There is the actual problem, corrupt mega rich families, and a lack of enforceable labor laws in Bangladesh. Also do some youtube research about sweatshops and other third world businesses, and you will see third world labor activists telling liberals from the western world to stay away from these companies, as they are the only businesses supporting these populations. There is a reason that people are flocking there from all over the country. The real problem is getting their wildly corrupted governments to enable sensible labor laws in order for the workers to have a livable daily wage, instead of powerful families becoming wildly wealthy. I have a ton of experience in this field, I see it constantly.
Labour laws in America allow businesses to lay off workers during a slowdown, maybe you should fix your laws first.
Jonathan DeMuria yeah but imperialism didn’t really help
Beautiful people. Working hard to get ahead. I admire them.
Hardworking people dream of living a normal life.
5:27 This is so surrealistic, beatiful and tragic.
Not cleaning the ship? Abatement companies used to fill the holds of these ships destined for these beaches with asbestos and mold ridden building material.
That's definitely not the proper music for a film of Bangladesh. It's India-ish
Very sad indeed. I wonder what the final profit is when everything is done, like after they pay the people and all costs. You would think they could give a little more than just enough for the family to just survive. And that kid seems so mature, at such a young age. I wish them all the best.
They probably earn less than $50 for the whole job, I mean they said they get $3 per day and this dismantling probably takes 2 weeks or so.
They could pay them more but they don’t want to it’s that simple
UNICEF doing a great job in bangladesh!
and our biggest concern is when the new IPhone comes out and that our buddy now has a bigger car
Wonder how much VICE has paid the ship breaking yard owners to film there.
Visited this place in Chittagong about 2 years ago and tried three days to get a glimps of what's going on there. Everything is bounded by 3m fences. The owners would not even let me get close to the actual breaking yards because they were really afraid of bad publicity.
I know this was 5 years ago but I hope y’all gave that boy some money
Jesus, I thought 2012 was 6 years ago....
Even though there's poverty, unemployment, political violence or natural disaster to fight, you alway find our Bangladeshi people smiling.
That's the beauty of our beloved Bangladesh!
These documentaries make me so grateful for my life in America.
not now at least
@@saadman920 I'm just grateful that I have a roof over my head, food on the table, electricity, wifi, clothes on my back running water, AC and NEVER having to put myself in dangerous situations like the young man in the video.
This is harsh, but it's true:
Many of these people wouldn't be so desperate if they didn't have a dozen freaking kids to divide their income
Pika Zilla if Europe never robbed Bangladesh there wouldn’t b any problem
@@MA-vu6sl What they robbed ?
@@bbparvez exploited
Poor countries all have high birth rates because they have higher earlier death qnd infant mortality it has nothing to do with them choosing purposely to have lots of kids its a natural phenomenon we see in all poor countries you rich westerner
I visited in 1989😅. Bangladesh is a friendly place. Greeting from Australia😅.
I'll never bitch about how hard my job is and what I get paid after seeing this
The guy at the beginning looks like he just moved in to the neighborhood and showed up at my door with freshly baked cookies
i cant believe the host pronounced chittagong as shitagong.... how in the...... how does chi turns into shi? i wanna die.
Hmmmm idk maybe like Chicago omfg idiot
It's called hyper-correction. It's the same reason why people think the Taj Mahal is pronounced "Taž/Tazh"
In English they often use French style pronunciation for many things they view as foreign for historical reasons. In French and maybe German and Portugese, Chittagong would be Tchitagong is spelt phonetically.
Lol one of the guys who created youtube was German/Bangladeshi
+Nadym Kondokar are you fucking stupid stop lying wtf
haha you child, Google Jawed Karim
This was from when Vice was still cool!
Nowadays it is young vloggers that only show videos of drugs, parties, gangs, criminality, sex and more of the “standard stuff”
That's hot
"There are hardships" XD
Captain:What happened to my ship. Pirates: shititgone
170 million people (and rapidly growing by the day) living in a country the size of Iowa (population 3 million). Simply not sustainable -- Bangladesh's population has nearly tripled in 40 years. Fortunately, the out of control birth rate has shown signs of slowing down somewhat in recent years but still poses a grave danger for such a small country that largely sits at or below sea level.
except Bangladesh realizes this and there massive declines in birth rates.
Poor countries have high birt rates due to infant mortality look it up every poot nation has nothing to do with choosing to have kids
And here I am selling cars at Honda. Makes me really grateful for the life I live and the job I have with the pay I have. People really out here like this. Crazy..
10 minute video is pretty shallow, considering they spent the time and money to send reporters over there and all the produce is a 10 minute video with fuck all information? Vice is turning to shit.
This vid has better quality than a 2020 vid
Ladies and Gentlemen take a good long look this what 1st world countries endured not even 100 years ago. This is also a reminder of what happens when you have a libertarian paradise no rules or regulations just let the market run wild it will fix itself.
balzirus this is all apart of the development of a country, the U.S used to do it the same way with child labor back in the early 1900’s. It won’t be like that forever, let the process run its course
And in USA or EU we get mad when there are no strawberries on stock in December ... sad truth of the situation in the world.
makes me love the united states almost brought me to tears this is motivation to grind right here.
This is the type of video that should make you hate the US and other western countries for allowing these types of conditions to even exist. (Thanks capitalism)
someone needs to fill the job and these dudes are there to do it, respect the grind
That boy wasn't 16 more like 12 but hey he's helping his family.
Could be malnourishment. I doubt anyone out there has proper nutrition and that will stunt growth in all kinds of ways.
The "City of Shit a Gong"? Bullshit, you made that name up.
I live in bangladesh. And the city exist
Lol it isn't actually pronounced like that.

Vice, as usual, shows one side (the provocative side) of the coin. This is evident from its very description of ship breaking in the first sentence of its post. Vice calls ship breaking a "practice." A practice is "the actual application or use of an idea, belief, or method," such as female genital mutilation. We often use the term for those activities that are fundamentally barbaric and serve no purpose. However, ship breaking is not a practice; it has nothing to do with any ideology. Rather, it is an "industry." An industry is an activity that produces goods or services within a society. In this case, ship breaking provides steel and a whole lot of it to a developing country that badly needs it. Once you acknowledge ship breaking as an industry, meaning it provides goods that we ourselves demand, you cannot so easily declare it fundamentally barbaric and useless. And, that's why Vice doesn't call it what it is. The flip side (the realistic, boring and perhaps sad side) of the coin is that ship breaking is vital to global prosperity: steel is vital to global commerce and innovation; global commerce and innovation is vital to global prosperity; ship breaking provides a lot of steel; so, ship breaking is vital to global prosperity. Without ship breaking, our immense cargo ships would waste away without providing us any benefit (i.e., the opposite of recycling) and the global steel supply would dwindle. Of course, the would be detrimental to global prosperity. And that is the exact agenda that Vice and its liberal ideology advances: GLOBAL POVERTY. But, at least we'd all be poor together, just like the Soviet Union, North Korea, Cuba and all other socialist utopias both past and present... Now, this is not to say that the condition of the ship breakers is acceptable. Indeed, it is lamentable. However, there are many reasons (some legitimate and others not) for their condition and many solutions. But, it is important to not mix up those reasons and solutions with the industry itself. The industry itself is moral and important.
This men need equipment i cant imagine the pain in the ass welding off those ships is like but id love to experience their pain. I have more respect for this men then a president
Meanwhile women in US or Caanda:
"OMG I get hit on like all the time on the street when I'm wearing low cut tops and skin tight jeans that show off my ass, it's sexual harassment!! Living in a patriarchal world is literal hell!!"
As an expert I can tell you......
