    My 14 year old son and I are just taking up canoe fishing in (and around) Charlotte Harbor, in SW Florida. There's much to learn, it seems. I'll be going back and watching your videos over the next few days. For now, we are going with your topwater and popping cork suggestions. Thanks.

    I have that same plug and I love it. One thing I do to my top water plugs is, I change my back treble hook out with a treble with a buck tail. After I twitch it the buck tail will wiggle a little. That action tends to aggravate the fish. My little tip hope it works for y'all. Thanks

    Great video. I think the Heddon Spook lures are kind of special in the way they bob side to side, and then bob down under the surface a bit. Heddon make the coolest lures, I just wish they weren't so expensive to buy here in the UK. The first ones I bought I thought were too precious to just chuck in the sea. Of course, I chuck 'em all the time now. Hey ho. Thanks. Raymondo

    pear shaped split ring, berkley 30# big game green for leader and working the rod high and perpendicular to the water works the best. lots of snap in the side to side motion and lotts of splash which is really what draws the strikes.

    How's the fishing since Harvey and Irma? I lived not to far from Boca Grande during Charley. Boca had some damage from Irma this time but nothing like Charley! Good fishing, love to watch, wish I was fishing! 🐟

    Excellent presentation and very informative and helpful! I've only transitioned one year from straight FC to braid with leader, and only regret I waited so long. But haven't yet tried braid for topwater. For a half ounce Super spook, Jr. would you say 20# braid to 12# mono would seem adequate and appropriate on a MH spinning rod and a 3000 or 4000 size Vanford? I've been using fairly long leaders, generally running the knot inside my guides but just outside my spool because it was the fear a getting bit less that prompted me to do so. Is there any harm in staying with the longer leader, even if I swap the FC for mono?

    Besides early morning what is a general rule for when to use topwater?...heat..summer?

    • @killingyouwithlogic5808
      @killingyouwithlogic5808 5 років тому

      Early morning or later before dark into dark.Less heat is good hence the morning and later evening due to fish get more active in later summer when its cooler out and also the tend to go in more shallow!

    Which one do you prefer for the connection of mono + braid?uni or fg?

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  6 років тому +1

      The FG because it's roughly 30% stronger for the lines I use (10 lb PowerPro to 20+ fluoro/mono).

    I thought braid was better for topwater. I learned that from Roland Martin since braid floats and fish wont see it sinking.

    What do you do if a snook is following your top water lure ? Do you change the retrieve faster or slower or do you just stop it

    • @DanielLopez-ux1io

      Just in case you don't have a plastic at the moment

    • @kyscott
      @kyscott 6 років тому

      Daniel Lopez try to keep the same pace all the way to the boat and ignore the strike . If you slow it down they will lose interest a lot of the time. You can always slow your retrieve on the next cast if you are getting lots of misses.

    I say NO to the loop ! NO LOOP...Why ?..Because there is a ton of friction and abrasion going on from every cast,to working the bait, to fighting the fish ! Not to mention the weight of the fish and pull is crimping the loop..Basically the line gets sawed on non stop..So I would rather tie directly to an 'O'ring and let it saw back and forth on the eye of the lure instead of my line !..Now imagine if the fish wraps you around a stump etc..She's shaking her head frantically and your baits eye is sawing crazy on the loop..Friction + abrasion = SNAP !

    • @Plainview200
      @Plainview200 5 років тому

      Split ring - not O-ring. O-rings are made of polymer material and used as pressure seals, and sometimes spacers.

    • @noahjohns7954
      @noahjohns7954 3 роки тому

      I’m late, but if your loop knots crimp and slide tight then you aren’t tying a loop knot correctly. And it’s split ring, o rings are what seal waterproof items ( gaskets etc) o rings are rubber bands essentially

      Which specific parts of this video do you not agree with?

    • @kyscott
      @kyscott 6 років тому +3

      Salt Strong Leader material is often very different than the line they put on the big spools. Specifically flourocarbon. Try some break strength or abrasion tests on the berkley flouro big spool vs little leader spools they sell and you will see the difference immediately. Yes you are saving money , but taking a risk.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  6 років тому +7

      What perfect timing for your suggestion because I performed an abrasion test on fluoro leader line vs. main line just yesterday. And I was shocked to see that there was no clear winner between the two. The test was filmed so you'll soon be able to see how the test was performed and what the results were.

    • @kyscott
      @kyscott 6 років тому +1

      Salt Strong look forward to it , thanks . With my own testing there was a clear difference so thats interesting

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  6 років тому

      I was just testing the Fluoro leader vs. Fluoro main line. I'm thinking that the results will differ by manufacturer. So I'll be sure to do a future test with Berkley.
