My take:
One of the most pleasant surprises of compiling Kairi's screentime in KH is getting to debunk the claim that she spent most of it "comatose". On the contrary, she only spent 1/4th of it (7 min) as a lifeless shell. The rest of the time has her either fully awake, or astral-projecting herself from within Sora's heart, which at one point includes bringing Sora into a flashback of her childhood in Hollow Bastion, which she lied about not remembering anything about.
Another great thing to see here is the level of humanity, relatibility and depth that Kairi has thanks to the writing, animation and voicework in this game. Her character arc in this game runs from early on to literally the final scene before the end credits, an arc about her anxiety and fear of change and how that may separate her from the people she loves. In the end, she learns how to accept it because she knows she'll always be with them and they with her, as their hearts are connected. She may not have a keyblade or fight, but Kairi was never a stronger character than she was in this game.
Exactly. Kairi in KH2 was a step down compared to this, though there were still good parts to her there as I say in my pinned comment on that video, and I'm PISSED that it took until 0.2 BBS and KH3 for Square Enix to actually bring her back into relevance and follow up on her KH2 developments, just because a lot of fans hate Kairi for being Sora's love interest. Kairi deserved better.
I find it impossible to see KH1 Kairi and KH2 Kairi as the same character. They are so different that it feels like she got replaced by some bland chick with no personality.
I know it's silly to stop liking the series just because my childhood waifu got ruined, but I find it really off-putting.
I don't even dislike her KH2 version as a character or as a design, it's just jarring to see everyone acting like that's Kairi even though she feels like a completely different person in every way.
Sora had a weird change in personality too, but it's justified by the fusion with Roxas and it still feels like an evolution of his original personality. Kairi, on the other hand... It felt more like a replacement, rather than an organic evolution of the character.
The final scene of KH2 always failed to make me feel anything, it just felt wrong for Sora to be welcomed by this bland, timid girl that is supposed to be Kairi.
Does anyone else feel the same way about KH2 and its sequels?

I think the writing was better in 1 for Kairi. On 3, she got sidelined, got beat up by Xion, and was offed by Xehanort. Like, it's not the same Kairi from 1 &2
I didn't like when they changed her voice actress from Hayden Panettiere, even if the actress sounds likely.
Kairi has a surprising amount of personality throughout the series for a character who doesn't get much screen-time. :D
Mainly in this game, although she does have her moments in KH2 and 0.2 BBS. I hope she gets a lot more in KH3.

My husband and I played this game when we first met and we said if we ever have a girl we would name her Kairi. Well here we are 11 years and 4 kids later and we finally get our daughter

Its more like people are frustrated that she is getting in the way of Sora x Riku becoming canon most of the time.
It’s because she was the target that the fairy was after she was not ready to be a fighter if she had maybe things would have been different but in kh3 she is ready and stronger to play her part to fight.

Yep they basically gave her the peach treatment in the rest that's why I only like kh 1 Kairi she has a personality a hobby and even shows a bit of her power but the other games her personality, hobby, drive is on Sora which kinda doesn't seem that good at all like yes have drive for the one you have feelings for sure but don't not have your own life don't focus it on one person that's my issue with Sora in kh3 as well like in DDD he said his friends are his power and I understand he loves Kairi but the fact he felt that she was his power only (that might just be me but I took that scene as that) kinda seemed off and out of character-
There's a theory going around about how Kairi's most important person is Sora and she noticed that his most important/closest person was Riku; so, she began to copy Riku's sass in order to get closer to Sora.
When they reunite, after being isolated for so long and losing her spunk, she realizes she can't be Riku and does the next best thing: she copies Sora's optimism itself to get close. That's why in KHIII she writes letters to Sora, it's showing her belief on who Sora is as well as figuring out how to get closer.
That's also why in MoM, she turned into Sora: she simply was doing her best to BE him so she could get closer to him. Anyway, there's a whole lot more evidence to this theory but that's sort of the sum of it!
I hope that maybe working with Aqua will help Kairi lose her dependency on Sora, she has so much potential as a character on her own

When I first played KH back when, I didn't care for her much. Now, considering all the wahmens you see in modern media, I appreciate her a lot more. She's a light in a dark world.

I love Kairi as a character I think she has a great personality and she has grown quite a bit throughout the series. I wish that they would give Kairi her own game because I think she really deserves it. She's an excellent fighter and her skills as a key blade wielder are really amazing considering that she hasn't had much battle experience. She definitely has the potential to become an even greater fighter than Sora in my opinion. I feel bad that Kairi hasn't gotten much screen time throughout most of the main games. I think going forward she should finish up her training as a key blade wielder and travel to other worlds along with Aqua since she clearly decided to study under her at the end of Melody of Memory. Kairi💖 and Aqua💖 would make an excellent team!

Is it me or does Kairi lose her personality in Kh2? I mean, in Kh3 she's sassy and still 'princessy'. But Kh1, she's sassy, stubborn, and knows when to let Sora handle things.

I really loved Kairi in KH1and 2 the only thing that bothered me in 2 was her outfit.
But in KH3 she sounds like a robot and it seemed like she lost her personality (at least her outfit was better) ,I love but I think they chose the wrong voice(KH3) to capture her character but no hate on VA!

Is it bad that I personally only like this version of Kairi and feel like the series kinda failed her in the other Games it might just be me- like she has a hobby, she's sassy and teasing in this game and drive to want to help not just Sora but others, while in the other games even when she was hinted at growing in strength to fight she's pushed to the side and stuck in the peach role again and again, and not just that but she slowly losses somethings she did like some hobby or how she cared about all her friends not just Sora but in later games her whole personality and being seens focused on Sora it sucks to think that she has basically been stuck in the generic love interest that lacks a full focus on herself. Its happened to alot of love interest like in the past where one character focuses so much on their relationship and protag but not have time for the little interesting things in her character like I like how she made charms, wasn't a afraid to be sassy to sora or riku and the fact that she has powers but their never fully explored and kinda pushed away when they need her to be kidnapped or more I'm not trying to say she has to be this instant strong person but it's the fact she relies on everyone else and can't do basically things that might make sense in a situation like in melody of memories we can see she can switch her keyblade to her other hand but she couldn't do that in kh 3- and she has strength even if not as strong as others but it's they make her pretty much defenseless when the plot needs it. At least this how I view it-

She still had a good amount of spark in KH2: telling Axel to screw off, being willing to fight Saix bare-handed w/ Namine at her side, etc. But by the time we hit KH3.....oof.

sadly, kairi as a character went downhill after this game imo. i did thought she was pretty fine halfway through KH2 until around the end game.
She was fine in the endgame too, IMO. The problem there was so much *stuff* was going on, most of which had little to nothing to do with her, so she just kind of stood there in the backrow of the party aimlessly, saying very little (plus no party AI, boo!) But at least she was present for it at all, damn near the whole way through! So I'll still gladly take that over the insulting bait and switch KH3 pulled, which makes me mad even now.
