I took a blade sharpening class from Brian, what ? - 40 years ago. It totally changed what I understood as a sharp edge. But more importantly, for me, was my personal relationship with a person who not only knew what he was talking about but, with humor , would step back, if things didn't work out exactly as predicted ... think, and adapt.. Swedenborg talks of "love of uses." Check it out! That's Brian. I feel fortunate to have known and worked with him.

Dear Mr. Burns. My grand father (1998-1978) was a great carpenter. I still have all his chisels (about 100 years old). I never dared to touch them, because I was afraid of ruining them. After I saw your video, I remembered may things he told me 45 years ago. I thanks you for providing the technical skills to begin this restoration. Great job!!

Thanks for the kind words! It's pretty easy to ruin a chisel by grinding it on a power grinding wheel without water to cool it. You end up overheating it and making it soft, so that it won't hold an edge very long. Sharpening it with a honing guide with water stones is perfectly safe as there is very little heat created.
      Cheers,
      Brian

Con't: The diamond stone that I use for primary edge shaping had been scrubbed clean with detergent and water mix using a fingernail brush. I felt it was clean until I sprayed the first few squirts of simple green and water mix on to the surface and saw the grime and metal just float out of the stone surface. I would not presume to try and tell you anything about sharpening but this product is really worth a try and is very low cost. Best regards and thanks againg for the videos.

I just finished making my stone box & shims a couple of days ago. I'm applying several coats of Tung Oil finish to make the box water resistant. Can't wait to try it out!

    Hello labrat (great name!),
Thanks very much for the suggestion. I have a hard time breathing the fumes from Simple Green, but there is a fan quite handy to my sharpening station, so I'll give it a try. I'll let you know if it helps.
    Cheers,
    Brian

I enjoyed the video and got a lot from it. For several years I also used a water and detergent mix on my stones (diamond and water). Then I saw a number of utube videos where a 50/50 mix of "simple green" cleaner and water was used. On trying this product, the improvement in the cutting of the stones was very impressive and I was a convert.
You may like to try this in your system.

There is a product available for cleaning belt sander belts. I have copied the link of one such below as an example. Please note I have no financial interest in this particular product.
It works amazingly well for cleaning diamond stones as well.. One just uses it as one would an ordinary eraser on a pencil drawing. In fact, an ordinary school eraser works just as well

I think a system like this is wonderful, but only after you first learn to sharpen strictly by hand.

      Hello James,
I sharpened by the traditional hand hold method for the first 15 years of my woodworking career. After I developed this system in the late 1970's, I never looked back. I have taught literally hundreds of beginners to sharpen with it, and I think it has given them a jump start on doing fine woodworking.
I would be happy to mail you a free copy of my sharpening booklet. You can find my website, and contact info, by googling my name.
By the way, I no longer sell the system, you have to make your own honing guide and stone box. Plans are in the booklet. Woodcraft Supply may have a few left over-systems from their purchase of The Japan Woodworker.
      Cheers,
      Brian
