"It was never a calculation for us" In this day and age, where every video game company is about Numbers, Sale figures and focus groups that try to appeal to the most number of "consumers", That one simple line was very refreshing to hear, and it explains why people love these guys so much. Keep up the great work CDPR, and I'm certain the community will stick with you guys till the end
Maybe it did come off as naive, what i meant was CDPR still has this human element to them that makes me really like these guys. They feel above the corporate bullshit. At the end of the day they are still a business, But their consumer friendly practices makes them stand out from the crowd. Even gog is a really good platform
Thanks for this video Noclip. Always excited to watch these. Amazingly well made and it's great to see the passion of the game devs in these times where games are starting to feel more manufactured on a factory line. The Witcher and the developers who crafted these masterpieces will stand the test of time, helped by you.
They ran out of money, port and economic crisis and the whole selling part of the company thing, while making Witcher 2. They had to make the game smaller, cut act 4, (was going to be about the Hunt and Yennefer) and they had to rework the whole game and ac3 extensively to make it work, which also explains why Ac3 is as short as it is and the ending so... "left hanging". I dunno how it was meant to be specifically, but i assume meeting yen would have gone somewhat like the tutorial zone in W3, you meet her, maybe even the emperor bit as well, and then set off to find Ciri - insert W3
Thankyou, i knew there was going to be an act 4 but didn't know what it was going to be about. Alot of the creators in the doco seemed disappointed in the games tone and shift into grim darkness in comparison to the lighter tone of the first similar to the short stories.
Danny O'Dwyer. I don't miss you at Gamespot. This is one of the many great things your are meant to do as a games journo. Love your channel. Shout out from Mandela Bay, South Africa.
It's a bit of a shame that both witcher 1 and 2 just get quickly summarised in such a quick video, I understand that W3 is the big one, but the first two are fantastic games aswell.
There is almost two hours long polish documentary (with english subtitles thay you can turn on in options) done by arhn.eu about first attempt to create Witcher game (by Metropolis) and about CD Projekt's Witcher 1. Plenty of people who worked on both games are talking about it and shows materials from production (usually for the first time ever) - ua-cam.com/video/g18GgD-SNzM/v-deo.html
It has more to do with most developers realistically having difficulty recalling many of the details for games that happened so long ago, when they've worked on so many projects since. Whereas with Witcher 3, they just put the final touches (Blood & Wine) on a year and a half ago (and technically, some of the team is still working on the PS4 Pro/Xbox One X versions). Overall, I understand your point though. Certainly, those games deserve more attention. It's why NoClip is so critical. Stuff like this barely exists in this kind of format. Endless games deserving of the recognition that comes from examination.
yeah, these are meant for a mainstream audience, not RPG fans who can appreciate a good game even if it doesnt have buzzword design, like "Open World". Average Joe doesn't even know W1 and W2 exist.
3 is in many ways simply better, and in some significant ways neither better nor worse but different. Even though I think Witcher 3 is overall the greatest of the three, 1 and 2 each have a very distinct feel to them as well (in the soundtrack as well, eg. River of Life in 1 and Dwarven Stone upon Dwarven Stone in 2).
"Every 1 hour it would crash, but I loved the game and thought 'This isn't going to stop me from playing'" Literally my exact thoughts with Cyberpunk 2077. It doesn't crash every hour, in fact way less than that on my base PS4, but I enjoy it so much that bugs and crashes just aren't enough to stop me from playing.
Dude same, most people just like to be vocal. I played it on launch with the million bugs and still appreciated all the damn time put into it. I actually had very little bugs, just horrible frames which I hate. The rest was a rich world and background, shocking missions (the one in the slaughterhouse was sick) and the guns were all pretty exciting despite the trash control scheme. All that and keanu reeves is with you the whole time legit putting on a GREAT show. Made the vee actor look like an amateur
Seriously these docs are incredible, haven’t seen anything on UA-cam made with this much love in a long time. Keep doing what you’re doing because it’s going to be huge!
I gave away my copy of the Witcher 3... I saw the PS4 Pro patch landed today, well I'm glad to support these amazing developers with another purchase :)
They are innovating. The problem is, judging from the scrapping of two prototypes and still being in pre-production, they are trying to innovate too hard maybe.
It's going to be really hard to top what they did with the Witcher saga. At least they got the original creator of the Cyberpunk rpg to help develop it.
trust me, from what I've seen cyberpunk 2077 will be super fucking innovative, they are truly trying to create a world and put a lot of detail into everything
Watching this series for the first time in 2022 - Marcin is a legend, what a friendly, funny guy. I have just forgiven them completely for the Cyberpunk launch :)
Even though it's the biggest step they have taken, in terms of engine and combat style. But maybe that's why they regard it as but a stepping stone to Witcher 3, the big one.
The passion just oozes off these developers. The Witcher 1 will always have a special place in my heart (even though I'll probably never replay it. It aged terribly.)
This still broke aspiring Indie from Morocco loves your channel content. hope to someday soon enough to finally make a living and put my money where my mouth is and become a patron too. Thank you for the amazing work. I've watch all of it. Every piece was such an inspiration. Always a real treat to see fellow veteran devs have room to talk at length about the love they have for their craft. Can't wait for all the goodness to come. And who knows, maybe someday when i get that pc project going i'de be an interesting subject to cover :p ( might as well dream big haha
This is the ONLY channel that I have notifications turned on for. This is so amazing. Thank you thank you thank you, to you our Irish Cream, and to Sayday Proyekt (I will never westernise the pronunciation again) for the game, and being so open in these interviews.
Witcher 1 and 2 are both great games. Loved playing them. It's great to see a documentary highlighting these. Also, I generally love special features so... how am I not a Patreon member already?
Ahhhhhh Why are these always so good, Danny even in your days of GameSpot your videos have been a dream to watch, thank you and I'm glad to donate on Patreon every month!
The frame at 12:10 reads This production was funded entirely by the support of 4,444 Patrons. I was on 0.25x playback speed tapping play pause to find that out. 😂
I'm amazed at their tenacity, especially in the face of this being their first game. And then to go and repeat that? And three-peat? Totally a case of "preparation meets the opportunity"
Amazing documentary series. Thank you for it. I'm from Brazil and I knew about this game because I was a huge Bioware fan. I didn't have a legal way to buy it, this game wasn't on Steam, so, I looked for a torrent of this and only found a Russian very, very bad copy. At the time, I knew nothing about the books and the story, they are not published here in any language. When the enhanced edition came, I finally could play it. I played through ir two times in a row, and I still want to play it! Is amazing, finally a adult RPG, with such a rich environment! Then, when Witcher 2 came out, the books started to be published here, and when I read it, I could really understand more about the environment created on the game, and realized how CD Projekt is a huge fan of it, how important this history is for them, and made me like these games even more! Then came Witcher 2, and these is not my favorite of the trilogy, but It was amazing what a little polish company was doing, it is better than many others RPGs of this time. Then, Witcher 3, how ambitious this guys can be! Amazing story, all that elements that came from the books, and all following the same narrative lines. Many, many side quests with so much rich history! So, I'm a huge fan, of the series and of the studio that created it!. I still think The Witcher is the best computer RPG still made. Can't wait for Cyberpunk !!!
I recently played through The Witcher and the game blew me away. I had heard of its awful combat and dialogue but I really enjoyed it. The slightly cringy voice acting and click-to-kill combat system had a charm I seldom find in games. And the story was awesome, I read the books and the game keeps rewarding you for having done that with small dialogue options and mentions of characters from the series. I highly recommend this game to anyone interested in a story-focused rpg and can stand the dated textures. :)
Honestly, I played Witcher 2 in 2012 like 8 times, before playing the first. Then I played the third and then.. I gave a chance to The Witcher. I don't care about graphics only about story and atmosphere. And that's why I love it. It's still my favorite. Even tho gameplay and combat system sucks, I really enjoyed it.
I can still remember the first time I purchased the first game, the cover art attracted me onto it Now I have it on Steam, nostalgic game (and yeah I can still remember the random crashes every 60 minutes as well).
Danny has gone a long way since his early days on GameSpot. Keep up the good work, mate! I still remember fondly your overview of the Half-Life series. :)
When I heard the music from the TV show at 2:52 I immediately realised that I had heard that sample somewhere before in a Sim City game. So I went on a little search through the Sim City 3000 and Sim City 4 OST's. And there it was, in Sim City 3000 in the song called "Infrastructure" that exact same percussion sample is used. You can hear it at 42:18 on this OST video: ua-cam.com/video/qkXOxLpdMds/v-deo.html
The funny thing about The Witcher 1 was that I live in the US and I knew about the game just from the trailer. That was all I needed to see to know I really wanted to play it, that said, I never bought it because my computer was not good enough. Even now I got a free copy of Witcher 2 and still don't have a good enough PC to play it very well. Witcher 3 is good enough to make up for lost time but I wish I could've supported the studio earlier.
(16:34 what is the name of this music) I am proud that CD Project Red has a very strong Polish spirit. He fights to the end, they don't give up and work hard to achieve the perfect result.
What if being a public company is the reason why they had to rush out Cyberpunk. My heart is still sad about what happened with that game, I love this company.
"We failed with the Rise of The White Wolf, but we won with The Witcher 2". this meant to be pun of some sort since when one White Wolf failed, the other White Wolf succeeded.
Witcher 1 is my favorite from the trilogy. Its atmosphere is truly special and all its parts fit each other perfectly. I remember walking on a road and seeing horse shit on it, and that made me realize just how much attention to detail the designers had. Where other games feel sterile and designed around the player, Witcher 1 made you feel that the world is real and exists whether you are there or not. Game designers have a lot to learn from that game.
"It crashed every 60 minutes" On my first playthrough it was every 30 minutes :D. This was also still the time were I was able to get Patches only from friends or CD's from Magazines, because my internet sucked even more back then... (I'm from Germany btw...)
I noticed one frame of Patreon information (the same information you show at the end except on a black background) at 12:10 . I don't think this was intentional but it was a bit distracting.
The Witcher series is the best game I've ever played! Thanks Noclip for the documentary !! BTW, what is the song from the beginning of this video? UPDATE: found the name, it is "A Tavern on the Riverbank" from Witcher 2
We found the guy that wrote all the "looks like rain" lines! GOAT dev
wind's howling
How long you gonna make me wait?!
"It was never a calculation for us"
In this day and age, where every video game company is about Numbers, Sale figures and focus groups that try to appeal to the most number of "consumers", That one simple line was very refreshing to hear, and it explains why people love these guys so much.
Keep up the great work CDPR, and I'm certain the community will stick with you guys till the end
Don't be that naive...
ofc it wasnt a case on the start. they have started being on leash of calculations later, with witcher 3.
Maybe it did come off as naive, what i meant was CDPR still has this human element to them that makes me really like these guys. They feel above the corporate bullshit. At the end of the day they are still a business, But their consumer friendly practices makes them stand out from the crowd. Even gog is a really good platform
@Nicholas Marashio I really hope they won't, they've been the most pro-consumer AAA game studio of the last decade
@Nicholas Marashio If they do I doubt it'll be as major as Bethesda, at least I'm hoping
Luck is "when preparation meets opportunity." Wow, that is immensely quotable.
Or the sentence that they like what they are doing and it is not a calculation.
It's actually a famous quote
Another fantastic episode. You are blowing me away with how well these documentaries are done.
Fummy seeing you here lol.
Thanks for this video Noclip. Always excited to watch these. Amazingly well made and it's great to see the passion of the game devs in these times where games are starting to feel more manufactured on a factory line. The Witcher and the developers who crafted these masterpieces will stand the test of time, helped by you.
Not enough Witcher 2 discussion imo!
same
Indeed... At least this video is filled with TW2's music tracks, the best of the entire saga in my opinion:)
Yeah they all seemed bummed about witcher 2 and I wanted to know why
They ran out of money, port and economic crisis and the whole selling part of the company thing, while making Witcher 2. They had to make the game smaller, cut act 4, (was going to be about the Hunt and Yennefer) and they had to rework the whole game and ac3 extensively to make it work, which also explains why Ac3 is as short as it is and the ending so... Noclip is the CD Projekt Red of gaming journalism ;) Keep the amazing work guys.
Absolutely killing it Danny!! 2 parts in and this is already my fave doc yet! The story of CD Project Red alone is so fascinating!
As someone who did the same and then bought the game on PSN, be aware that save games aren't compatible between the disc and digital releases.
@@DaveLaw73 wow thats dumb o.O
I hope someday we get a Noclip Doc on Larian Studios..
Yes please. Those guys seem as passionate about game development as CDPR and they have a lot of good games under their belt over the years.
Yes please! I'm following their work since Divine Divinity ;)
I really hope they can stay true to creating new and unique vision with Cyberpunk. It's easy to fixate on things you did so well and stop innovating.
They are innovating. The problem is, judging from the scrapping of two prototypes and still being in pre-production, they are trying to innovate too hard maybe.
It's going to be really hard to top what they did with the Witcher saga. At least they got the original creator of the Cyberpunk rpg to help develop it.
Given their track record so far, I'm not too worried about that.
They said it in the video, they are just humans who don't want to work on the same thing over and over again.
trust me, from what I've seen cyberpunk 2077 will be super fucking innovative, they are truly trying to create a world and put a lot of detail into everything
Oh My God, this documentary is fantastic. Best I have ever seen. Keep up the good work
Watching this series for the first time in 2022 - Marcin is a legend, what a friendly, funny guy. I have just forgiven them completely for the Cyberpunk launch :)
Home from work and I check YT to find this released 4 min ago. Feels good.
i love how they build their name on her own increasing the experience step by step, especially dealing with other companies
why does this not have more views?!?!?!?
Wish there was more Witcher 2 talk :/ For some reason it always seems to be overlooked.
Even though it's the biggest step they have taken, in terms of engine and combat style. But maybe that's why they regard it as but a stepping stone to Witcher 3, the big one.
Great series.
I am so, so glad I found this channel. Danny, I’ve sorely missed your work.
The passion just oozes off these developers. The Witcher 1 will always have a special place in my heart (even though I'll probably never replay it. It aged terribly.)
Such a great series to watch. Well done Danny and co for this! Really looking forward to the rest of it!!

Dude, this series is awesome. I remember the 3 part you did for W3 just before it launched. That was great aswell.
Dude the production quality of this documentary is unbelievable
Great job.....finally some mature content about video game industry
This is the ONLY channel that I have notifications turned on for. This is so amazing. Thank you thank you thank you, to you our Irish Cream, and to Sayday Proyekt (I will never westernise the pronunciation again) for the game, and being so open in these interviews.
that track at the end still gives me chills
The closed captions are pretty good! "Danny laughs hysterically" xD
Witcher 1 and 2 are both great games. Loved playing them. It's great to see a documentary highlighting these. Also, I generally love special features so... how am I not a Patreon member already?
I was watching a lecture on calculus before this, and I had the video play speed on 2. Needless to say, it was a wild ride when this started.
Excellent and insightful look into the company and it's people! Good stuff Noclip, keep it coming! :)
Ahhhhhh Why are these always so good, Danny even in your days of GameSpot your videos have been a dream to watch, thank you and I'm glad to donate on Patreon every month!
Witcher 2 was my introduction to the series. I've been a huge fan of the Witcher ever since.
This series is amazing, thanks for putting it together.
Simply amazing! Thank you so much! Cannot wait for the next episode 😊
I subscribed for these, very well done
You know how NoClip is so good? When their videos are the first thing you click on upon opening UA-cam.
Love u noclip for the witcher series documentary, one of my favorite games of all time

A Wolfenstein documentary would be an awesome thing to see as well. This is amazing work!
Amazing documentary series. Thank you for it.

These guys are amazing, I bought a 360 just to play the witcher 2.
Excellent info and narration and top quality production. Looking forward to next parts :)
Ok, now make one for the Witcher 2!.. oh wait.
Awesome documentary. I wish you would make some like this about the Bioware and their games......
I had no idea David Guetta is the CEO of CD Projekt Red
I remember waiting for this game, being the only one to have hype for it and loving every minute of its 80 hours.
Great documentary, looking forward to Friday!
I would love to see more docs about game companies. If you make another campaign, I'll donate for sure.
Now this kind of content is what UA-cam content should look like. It's better than most of UA-cam RED videos.
I recently played through The Witcher and the game blew me away. I had heard of its awful combat and dialogue but I really enjoyed it. 19:27 in ENG sub is "...you work on it like three hours" but should be "...you work on it like for years"
@NoClip - There is an errant overlay at @12:09 it looks like the Patreon backer total flashes on the screen for a fraction of a second.
Witcher 1 is ony of my all time favourites
Honestly, I played Witcher 2 in 2012 like 8 times, before playing the first. Then I played the third and then.. I gave a chance to The Witcher. I don't care about graphics only about story and atmosphere. And that's why I love it. It's still my favorite. Even tho gameplay and combat system sucks, I really enjoyed it.
i purchased this in 2008, i'm playing it again now. i don't really remember it but it sticks with me it was amazing...i loved it was originally polish
the witcher 1 felt so mature it made oblivion look like a kitty at least from a stylistic point of view.
Beaitiful Job. Thanks for this Documentary serie!
I can still remember the first time I purchased the first game, the cover art attracted me onto it Now I have it on Steam, nostalgic game (and yeah I can still remember the random crashes every 60 minutes as well).
12:10 "This production..."
LOL
Glad im not the only one who noticed it :D
Playing both of these games in Nvidia 3D Vision is an experience that I'll always fondly remember
Such quality content! Thanks a lot for this amazing channel! Congrats!
Amazing. Thank you so much for this insight on CD Project and it's Games.
please make this a 100 part episode
I've said it before and I'll say it again...some of the highest quality content on UA-cam
I replayed to 12:09 multiple times so I could see what the one odd frame was.
Awesome quality mate, keep er lit!
Marcin reminds me of Gene Wilder! In the way he looks, and in the way he speaks.
Witcher 1 is a hidden gem.
It's so creepy, awkward, funny...
Keep up the great work! I love these video game documentaries
21:10 prep meets opportunity
Incredible work man, what a watch
Thank you for saving and leaving the IP with you guys!! seeing the games companies put out now, we can know what would happen to it...
i really respect marcin for how upfront and honest he is. kojima where ya at
At 12:10 there's 1 frame saying the production was funded by 4444 patrons
(16:34 what is the name of this music) I am proud that CD Project Red has a very strong Polish spirit. He fights to the end, they don't give up and work hard to achieve the perfect result.
Marcin is such a great guy.
"It crashed every 60 minutes"
On my first playthrough it was every 30 minutes :D. This was also still the time were I was able to get Patches only from friends or CD's from Magazines, because my internet sucked even more back then...
(I'm from Germany btw...)
The Witcher is legend, and I still play it to this day
Another great video. Good work.
I'm currently playing Wither 2 again and man. This game is unbelievably good and nicely looking, even the years after. And it's goddamn difficult.
10:57 love this scene
I'll follow CD Projekt to the end, what a great company!
Congrats Danny, this is art, thank you so so much for this :D
I noticed one frame of Patreon information (the same information you show at the end except on a black background) at 12:10 . I don't think this was intentional but it was a bit distracting.
I loved it! So much mysticism and myth. Big decisions, great questdesign.
12:06 25-th frame? I can't catch up it.
Think it was a mistake. Left in the Patron thank you text.

I was totally expecting some Dark Souls meme or disclaimer.
Me too.
Haha, I too was expecting a Dark Souls meme, spent some time trying to pause on the right frame, only to be fairly disappointed.
I love you, Noclip
The Witcher series is the best game I've ever played!
Thanks Noclip for the documentary !!
BTW, what is the song from the beginning of this video?
UPDATE: found the name, it is "A Tavern on the Riverbank" from Witcher 2
