  • John Shaw discusses why we use labels and where they come from. What is the purpose of labels? The purpose of this talk is to explore the effectiveness of labeling others. Is it efficient? Or is it too harmful?
After receiving a J.D. from Stanford Law School in1980, John practiced criminal law for nine years in Los Angeles, both as a prosecutor and a public defender. During his career as a trial lawyer, John handled several thousand cases and tried over one hundred jury trials, including numerous murders, rapes, and robberies. John’s fascination with human behavior led him to return to school to pursue a doctorate in psychology, and he earned an M.A. (1991) and a Ph.D. (1994) in social psychology from UCLA. For the past 20 years John has been on the faculty at Lafayette College, where he is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Head of
the Psychology Department. Based on his experimental research on human behavior, including many studies on eyewitness memory, John has published numerous research articles in respected peer-reviewed journals. An experienced and accomplished teacher, John has taught a wide range of courses in psychology and on the ethics of genetic engineering, and he has received over a dozen teaching awards and honors at Lafayette. John recently published his debut novel, Death by DNA. John lives in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with his wife Carolyn, his children Carson and Kendall, two dogs, and a guinea pig.

Yes I work at McDonald’s but you’ll usually see me being genuinely happy at work. My kindness is not fake at work. I know my job sucks but I refuse to let that ruin my mood. I make the best out of situations in life and move forward. Some of my coworkers don’t understand why I’m like this but hey I’m just being myself. Ain’t nothing I can do about changing that. That being said just cuz I’m happy at work it doesn’t mean I’m not actively trying to obtain something better. I ultimately know it’s my fault why I ended up there. After my DUI I lost a decent job that I had prior. People can say mean things about me all they want or see me as less but I don’t care because I know myself better than anyone else can ever know me. When I first stepped foot inside that McDonalds I was a legitimate doomer but after months there I slowly started growing and healing. I even took up weight lifting and I’m not the biggest guy around but I’m definitely stronger today than I was 1 year ago. I wake up excited nowadays because I see the glass half empty but also half full and it’s that gratitude and hunger all combined into one that has allowed me to pull myself out of this self made hole. I got myself here I can get myself out! But most importantly I WILL. And that’s because I refuse to identify as a “doomer” because I am not doomed even you consider me a doomer.

GREAT message! I work with teens and young adults with different ability's who have been given labels and limits in utero. I am working to change the "I cant" label to "what I can do". I WILL be using this as part of my classes. Thank you so much. Tamara

There are so many truths to this video. This man should have had more of an audience, and more people should be speaking about, and hearing these facts.

Not many are in touch with the CREATOR.That's how I feel about the apathy of society. Cell phones have become electronic leashes , people use their thinking abilities a lot less than 30 yrs ago.

Excellent subject matter. When I am out and about, people "repeatedly" ask me the following question; "Do you mind if I ask what nationality you are?" My response is; No I don't mind as long as you don't mind if I don't answer. On one occasion, a woman was apparently offended by my response and labeled me with an acronym, "Oh you have ASPD!" So, I guess she considers me an acronym with no nationality. That's laughable. Living in a small town is no excuse for people who want to pry and invade another's privacy.

Are you not proud of your ethnicity or worried it will label more?

You can show this to a million people and explain to them the negative effects of labeling and they will still do it. It’s like human nature to perpetuate stereotypes and stigma. Irritating that such a big problem has an easy solution.

Its not very realistic to not use labels at all. Its natural and essential for living in a hugely complex world. However being mindful of the effects of labeling, and its shortcomings, goes a long way. Thanks

When it comes to the words, yes those are labels but when you talk about colors and physical things I think the proper term is symbol or image. Like in the example of the boy and girl toys with their colors, they are symbolic representations.
I agree our culture uses labels for all things, whether those labels be necessary or unnecessary. I also agree labels can be reaffirming, hurtful, and reductionist. What a person may overlook is the fact labels reduce a person to a picture in your mind and from that we act. Labels are the things that divide us as well. I have my group and you have your group, I am American and you are Russian, so we oppose each other. This habit of labeling continues around the globe and divides man even further.
    Interesting talk by the way!

There are boys and girls. That's not a label that's nature. Now politics and theories and concepts and ideologies are labels.

exactly 6 years ago. On July 4, 2016 (on the ROUND 360th anniversary of the announcement of the Declaration of Independence of the United States), MARS unveiled not only its face, but also the famous Balanced Rock in the Murray Buttes area - is it the Banner of Independence or a colonization permit?

I was thinking about this and i thought it was something i only thought about. Labeling is such an outdated language mechanism that just doesnt fit our society anymore is more like a primitive thing to label someone quick as oh hes from thqt tribe hes an enemy etc i think every world problem would be fix if we remove labels. I think only tribunals should use labels after a sentence like saying than this guy is a thief

You can have boys and girls they are real things not labels like you have blue eyes or other colour you are male or female but what you play with what you want to do how you behave and dress is a different thing stop confusing people.
