I believe it lost that award to Justin Timberlake's "Sexyback" of all songs. Says a lot, sadly.

Great song & reaction. The story of Dave's life and his poor decisions in the early 90s, and his recovery. That's Dave's current wife as the angel & at the end of the video too.
Also, the limo "choffeur" is J. Kessler, the band manager.
We, all the fans wIll always be eternally grateful to Jennifer for bringing us back our Dave. Some of us will also keep hating that Conroy woman who introduced him to the drugscene in LA.
Dave wrote this song. It was the first song he wrote that appeared on a DM album. He had written a lot of songs for Exciter, but i guess Martin didn't want the songs in the album. For Playing The Angel, Dave proved his songs could be good (because of his solo Album Paper Monsters). I he demanded that his songs appeared on the Album, and i'm glad they did, all of Dave's songs are great, especially on this Album (Suffer Well, The Sinner in Me and Nothing's Impossible), and on the later albums Dave's songs are usually REALLY good. Suffer Well is probably close with Precious, Home, It's no Good and Wrong for the most famous post Wilder songs. The song is about Dave's personal struggles with life, and as you saw in the video, the path that he COULD have taken, but he chose not to take it, ESPECIALLY because of his wife, who he met in rehab if i recall. She literally saved him, and it's the Angel in the video. It's a great track, with a great video for a great Album. And don't worry, because while it is my favourite, Suffer Well is not even the best on the Album, that would be Precious.
This is one of my favorites & it was written by Dave! You didn't even notice Martin & Fletch in this video! Martin was in the wedding dress!!! Total Banger!
Yes! Angel lady is Dave's wife Jennifer! he says it represents how she saved his life (getting on a better life path after his drug period etc)

As I’m sure others have said, this song is basically an autobiography in song form about Dave’s rabbit hole into darkness and drugs. I like how he includes his wife, Jennifer, in the video and they’re still married.
One of the first songs since Violator that reminds me of the original magic.

This one was on my playlist while I was going through cancer (minor and now in remission, thank God) because of the chorus. Bit of a motto. Hang on, and suffer well. Positive attitude, hope for the future, try not to wallow in the suffering and pain.
Yes! This is one of my all time favorite DM songs. Was looking forward to your reaction and I'm glad you like it. Soooo good. Dave and Martin harmonizing in the chorus is just a perfect DM moment. One of their best for sure!

I saw the band live this past Sunday. So excited and happy to have seen them twice this year. 🤩 I really enjoy this song. By the way, the woman playing the Angel is the same woman that gets in the car with him is Dave’s wife in real life. Gorgeous couple indeed.

Apparently this song's lyrics where influenced by a friend of Dave's who told him to quote "Suffer well" presumably during his struggles with drug addiction in the 90s
Oh Yess! Love this song......great beat lyrics plus this video is so great (and a bit cheeky too)! Just to point out the angel in the beginning (and I just noticed it too) is his wife, Jennifer PLUS You've got to absolutely LOVE Martin an Fletch dressed as bridge and groom (esp. Martin) ...Nice to see they still have sense of humor about them and can poke fun at themselves. When are we gonna get some **ONE NIGHT IN PARIS** live tour reactions? Cheers mate!!

Seth... I proved it to you a few posts ago...SUFFER WELL and WRONG are DM Video-Highlights since 1993.
Dave Gahan told The Wave Magazine in 2005:
"There's a song I wrote on the new album called 'Suffer Well'. When it started out, it was a much slower song and we just decided to go in a really pop way with it. Which is a contrast to what it’s saying lyrically, which is: Suffer well, because whatever it is you’re suffering, if you suffer well enough, you won’t have to suffer anymore. It’s something that was said to me a long time ago, which I did not understand. A guy who was sitting with me and had a lot more experience in life - an older gentleman - said, 'You know, David, suffer well.' And I was like, 'What the fuck are you talking about? Thanks a lot, man!' It came back to me a few years ago, what he was really saying: Suffer well, and if you suffer well enough, you can move on."
Dave Gahan told M6's TV show 'Focus Rock' in October 2007:
"I really like 'Suffer Well' actually, [the music video is] fun. And that was was quite a challenge to make, there. The song is about, in, what you believe to be suffering, is where you grow and learn about yourself. Sometimes it's difficult, if you really wanna grow. So once a friend of mine said to me years ago, when I was complaining about life or whatever, my life, he said to me very calmly, "You know David, just suffer well." And I was so angry, I was like... But years later, it made sense, it made a lot of sense."

Curious what you‘ll think about the next song, Sinner in me. It’s a lot darker, more complex and probably not easy on first listen, but in many ways the quintessential song of the album. Pain and suffering, but with a little light at the end of the tunnel. Keep going, Seph! It‘s fun to watch you on your DM trip! Playing the Angel is a really great album throughout

This is a great song agreed, one of the few i listen to more often from the after Alan period. As always i wonder what Alan could have done with these songs but alas we will never know.,Although Alan did do a remix for them later ..I'm not always a fan of Dave's written songs but he did great with this one.Also this is one of Anton Corbijn 's more entertaining videos as well.
Dave demanded that his songs would be included on the record. Earlier He had songs for Exciter as well, but the others ignored the songs. He recorded Papermonsters (with Soulsaver?) in the meantime and told Martin that he would leave DM if Mart wouldn’t allow a few songs of Dave on the new record. Since then, Dave is more creativily involved in the band and the music improved again.
Paper Monsters hatte Dave mit Knox Chandler aufgenommen (2003). Die Soulsavers kamen erst mit seinem dritten Soloalbum.
All right Depeche song this. Not a real favorite for me, but totally ok. It confirms the album's quality increase from the previous album. - You hear that it's a Depeche Mode song when you hear it, so to speak, which you hardly could on the previous record.

One of their best songs? it's not bad, but I probably would have dismissed it, if that was the first song of theirs I ever heard.
