Just discovered The Roches last week, and I absolutely love their songs and their singing. I'm 32 years old from Sweden; The Roches music will ALWAYS live on.
I love these gals. So miss Maggie, gone way too soon. After I found them, nothing could keep me away. My first concert I brought the a bouquet of chocolate roses and handed it to them as they were just coming onto stage. It was awesome because Maggie’s face lite up and it was awesome. I was able to see them backstage and Terre explained that Maggie had said people always give them flowers but why couldn’t they for once get chocolates so this was why it was so happily accepted. After that, every time they came to town, I would have chocolates specially made for them, my favorite group. One year I made a huge tray and I mean huge tray of cookies. I made an assortment and peanut butter blossoms are my favorite with the Hershey kiss in the middle. Well, I also bought one of those giant kisses that was like a pound just by itself and so of course that was atop a giant blossom cookie right in the middle of the tray for my girls. Man I miss them. This was awesome. Thank you for making this available.
@M.D. B. I lived in Maryland but would travel to Virginia to see them in concerts. Still my favorite. Saw them a couple of times in San Diego but usually it was in Virginia.
I bought their first LP when it came out and loved them since then...I really regret that I never saw them live- they didn't tour Britain very much and it just never happened. I rediscovered them 5 or 6 years ago via UA-cam and it confirmed what fantastic unique talents they were. Sad to speak of them in the past tense. RIP Maggie.
There is no group like them. Aside from their extraordinary harmonies their material is so unique, drawn from their own compositions and their influences, such as a cover of "Naughty Lady form Shady Lane" and Crazy Larry songs, like Jesus Shaves and No Shoes. Maggie's song Long Before is as fine a song as any I've heard. Like others on these comments I mourn her.
This is such a wonderful record of the true talent of these sisters. I strongly prefer the performance of Hammond Song from this show to the original. A mark of truly great musicianship is to play live better than in the studio, and the Roche sisters always seem to do it. When I was 4, my favorite song was My Sick Mind, and I called it "Mysick". The Roches are a part of me forever. RIP Maggie, the soul of the band. I hope to spread the message of how wonderful all of the Roches were and are someday
I too think Hammond Song is better here, especially as I don't have to sit through Fripp's noodling (on the record) waiting for the real stars to sing again.
I love both versions but I will admit to thinking they were mic’d a little too close on the record version, resulting in a bit of distortion to their otherwise perfect harmony
In my opinion, what is so astounding about their music, is they rarely wrote about Deep, Serious, Meaningful Things. They wrote about Everyday things, like the Commuter Train, needing a crap job back again and feeling like a Gigantic Elizabeth. They meet you where you are then Stab you in the Heart. Check out the song, "The Death of Suzzy Roche." It takes place in a Freakin' Laundromat. Love.
Awesome! I was a teen the first time I saw theRoches at the Side Track Cafe in Oneonta NY in 1977. I thought they were the best voices I had ever heard. I still listen to the Roches and I think about that day that Suzzy shook my hand.
I remember being absolutely blown away when I saw them perform on Saturday Night Live in 1979. Bought their first album (as a trio) the next day, continues to be one of my all time favorites. Their music is offbeat and playful, their harmonies are exquisite. Stunning that they can replicate those harmonies when performing live without studio enhancement. They were a gift that more people should have been aware of. So sorry that Maggie left this earth way too soon...
Still one of my all time favourite groups. Been a fan since '79 when I moved to NYC. Saw them many times at The Bottom Line, also Carnegie Hall and Town Hall. Best live group ever. Lots of love from Down Under. RIP Maggie. xx
I was 16 in 1978 and seen the Roches doing the Hallelujah Chorus on an Irish TV show ( The late. Late) and was astounded by their talent...been a fan ever since ....God rest Maggie Roche gone but never forgotten
I saw the Roches in a mid-70s coffeehouse setting, a few feet from the stage. I remember how uplifting these women were. "We don't give out our ages and phone numbers!"
I seen them in Philly at the main point in the mid 70's. I fell in love. So sad about Miss Maggie, what an incredible talent. I can only imagine Suzzy and Terri's loss. Thank you WXPN Philadelphia for introducing these talented lovely ladies to me.
Absolutely unbelievable. I dont think that, despite the intricacies of the vocals, I heard a missed note. Loved them so much and still do. Sad that I will never get to see them as the 3 sisters. I love you gals. RIP Ms. Maggie. From Eastern Canada
Thanks to Robert Fripp for making them known beyond the U.S. (here = to germany). And also for his wonderful guitar solos on their two most beautiful songs.
Yes. I saw a version of this at one of their concerts and there was a point where they keep going over the boyfriend, boyfriend, boyfriend to which Terre says boyfriend? What boyfriend. So awesome. Loved it.
I've seen a lot of wonderful concerts, 'big acts', etc, over the decades, but regret never having seen The Roches live. Love 'em. Such talent and charisma. R.I.P. Maggie Roche. ❤️
I heard Hammond on WHFS Bethesda MD & went to the Wax Museum DC that week I think (The Another World Tour '84). Hallelujah, Commuter & Angry MAN- I was in the back row, my recorder was snagged (but not the same model as seated on my left side!), but I could see every head between us and the stage as I was flushed w/goosebumps & glanced at my pal taping. If not for the placement of the mic in his collar (reaching), he would have been turning his eyes to look, SILENTLY, at the person on the left side as well as the right side, conveying to each other - known OR NOT (NO WAY EVERYBODY ARRIVED WITH 2 PEOPLE & ALL KNEW EACH OTHER). THAT ENTIRE BUILDING'S AUDIENCE WAS IN TELEPATHIC COMMUNICATION 'DO YOU FEEL THIS‽ DO YOU, TOO?' I was blessed to catch up with them in 'SoBe, Miami about 12 yrs later & held up the door as they were being introduced to tell them 'I saw you at the.... You guys did structural damage to that place!" I was complimenting the sustained harmonics- 3 (3!) voices harmonizing- made the WAX MUSEUM shake! Not even greater decibels have done that before & I forget which Roche (Suzy✓) said 'I remember that place!' (& I just heard the anecdote re Reagan) that would explain why my deck ever got confiscated at the door (1st+last×)! That show was releasable (LP,CD/VHS,DVD) it was so good & being able to talk to their Mom- handling the merch table - & I believe their brother (David?) opened in Miami. What a tight family. Suzy was having fun 'exploring' her femininity on stage (Married Men?) at the first time I saw them; that's comfort on stage! I guess it's good for a breathing exercise.... So sweet
One Season cracks me up every time. How skillful to be able to sing so accurately and purposefully out of tune. And it makes it all the sweeter when they fall back in tune.
I remember when this show originally aired on PBS in Chicago I listened to their classic album like 3 times the other day and it put me in such a great mood. No one like them before or since❤
I know the words to do many Roches songs. Beautiful, off key and sometimes dissonant, but always original and wonderful. I was glad to have seen them live once.
I saw the Roches in DC in 1982 or '83, on a Sunday night. It must not have been the night Reagan was there. It was in SW DC, and you went down a set of stairs to get to where they were playing.
Seeing the pride- in a good way - their Mom had working behind the merch table & talking with her was almost as nice as acting like I worked there (Stephan Talkhouse, Miami '94±) & holding up the door to let them on the stage until after I'd told them how great they were at the Wax Museum DC '84 {'nuther World lp's Tour). I don't know if 'structural damage' re the building actually shaking & people silently looking at each other from side to side conveying the goosebumps & 'Do You FEEL this, too?’ silently was taken in the way intended.... That was the best show, possibly Tour, body of work. It's a shame my tape deck was held at the door (but the guy sitting next to me had the exact same rig- mic & all!); but I got it back after. What a talented family & Suzy- YumYum- 'the |||' was a fool to lose THAT Cool.
every christmas show at the bottom line on w 4th and Mercer... then the Caroling Carolers... They are never off my turntable since the first album came out... so special! maggie 😢😢😢. Losing True. Hammond Song. such intelligence, charm and humanity. Suzy is a work of art! and Terre is the musician of incredible talent who I think must have absorbed much of Robert Fripp without telling him. And the sisters were one.
The Hammond Song. You can keep the rest of it. But, without Fripp, it's half the song of the recording. The Fripp solo elevates it to sublime, not just good.
Thanks for uploading, terrific performance!
Just discovered The Roches last week, and I absolutely love their songs and their singing. I'm 32 years old from Sweden; The Roches music will ALWAYS live on.
Same here. 46 from Kiel. They're fantastic! :D I fell in love with Hammond. Do you have one or two other recommendations?
Happy to hear! :D Losing True is pretty similar to Hammond Song. My favourite I think is On The Road To Fairfax County. @@bille77
@@Ganters Kate & Anna McGarrigle Swimming Song is also sweet and from the era too. 🙂
Just think! Im 77 and may have been in this audience. What an outrageous yet wonderful experience. I miss dear Maggie so much.
well...energizing at the least!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hammond song is so beautiful. Brings tears to my eyes.
I like playing their Christmas album every year!

38 years late to the party but glad to have finally arrived. Stunning
There's nothing like family harmony.
Holy cow, this is incredible!!!
Holy hell! This have to be the Best live harmonies in the history of popular music

Been listening since the late 70s. It never gets old or less brilliant. 💞
The music of The Roches is exceptionally compelling to me to the point of addiction. Just wonderful.
Love the Roches. Their first two albums are incredible.

can't stop listening to the hammond song and deeply cry for yet unkown reasons for 1 month now.
loving it
Love this! First time hearing this I think.
Each with her own very specific personality and voice
Indeed. And yet harmonies and tonalities so locked-in they often sound like one single (superhuman) voice.
I remember being absolutely blown away when I saw them perform on Saturday Night Live in 1979. Bought their first album (as a trio) the next day, continues to be one of my all time favorites. The producer/engineer working on the first 2 Roches was King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp. He made them sound almost contemporary. :)
Still one of my all time favourite groups. Been a fan since '79 when I moved to NYC. Saw them many times at The Bottom Line, also Carnegie Hall and Town Hall. Best live group ever. Lots of love from Down Under. RIP Maggie. xx
I also saw them at Carnegie Hall- it was 1979 or 1980- and I still have the button that I got that night which says, “Carnegie Hall has Roches”
Discovered them in 1979! What great musicians and vocalists. Love their music and always will.
Lord, they were so good.

@@literallyanythingelse Losing True from the LP Keep on Doing..
The entire concert is phenomenal but"The Troubles" at 33:50- 40:00 was unreal.
Unreal, absolutely.

Saw this concert on PBS back in '83 and really fell in love with the Roches then. I'm so happy to see it on UA-cam.
Yes! This is where/when I first heard the Roches. Taped in Lo Fi - Black and white.
I really love the Roches. Their Christmas album is magical.
My god. This is AMAZING.
Once heard never forgotten. Been a fan since 1982 where they drew me in with a Robert Fripp guitar solo as the icing on the cake I just had to buy
Fabulous harmonies, clever songs. I got their first album that was produced by Brian Eno. Brilliant. So sad they are no longer a trio.
Thank you posting this. Still miss them. I was fortunate enough to see them a few times and they were always incredible.
So envious that you caught them live. Congrats.

Nothing like a capella Cole Porter in 1983.
So, so good.
