I often include affiliate links in my videos and descriptions. This will not change the price for you at all, but the seller will give me a small kickback. Cool eh? - Навчання та стиль
In the USA, black currant was outlawed as a plant for a long time due to being an intermediary host of pine rust. Because of that, black currant flavored things like Ribena are quite rare still.
I use roses out of my yard in my gin but I would be afraid to use roses from the florist - who knows what they are sprayed with?
You can get culinary roses/rose petals that are food safe, too.
normally if they've been sprayed anything you make out of them will taste very chemically, idk if thats always the case but in a lot of cases you'll know right away it isnt safe because it wont taste safe
Every year make a valentines vodka from the flowers. 5 year anniversary edition with a blend. Fun romantic concept
So awesome to see you and wifey chasing the craft together.
Fantastic dynamics between the 2 of you. Brilliant and entertaining. Thanks
That was a really funny intro, although I would’ve probably sprung for an extra dozen roses 😅 …a bed is so much more comfy than a couch! 💀
Hi Jess & Erin, happy Valentine’s Day… I have been adding Rose Petals to YOUR Cucumber Gin recipe since day one.. I don’t add the Kawakawa Leaves or the pepper corn. This is my wife’s favorite. 8g rose petals to 1 Lt batch and I up the Cucumbers to 40g..
Ribena was originally British, but is now owned by the Japanese beverage giant Suntory. And yes it is a cordial. With some black current juice, but mostly "black current flavor extract" which actually means "black current bush leaves extract". And lots and lots of sugar.
In Holland we have a softdrink made from black currant. It's called cassis, mainly from the brand 'hero".
I also have one batch of black currant ferment each year to use as a base spirit for gin.
You two are awesome together on the screen! Happy Valentine's Day chasers!
I discovered Rose Liquor whilst on holiday in Bulgaria (major rose producer). Absolutely loved it (like Turkish Delight too) but I have not been able to find any since in the UK.
I've heard of Ribena but never had or seen it here in The Netherlands. What we do have is 'Cassis', a black currant soda.
I wonder if you could get hold of the fruit which surrounds nutmeg and mace? I believe it gets candied and/or made into a soft-drink in the places where it grows.
Thank y’all for all the great videos!!! I did my first run using sugar and a lot of tea bags and surprisingly even after heads it kept a very nice floral smell to it. (I used 150g of Lipton tea bag tea per gal, and in total I used 4lbs of white cane sugar and 2lbs of brown sugar, I used about a table spoon of bakers yeast per gal to insure all the sugar got converted from the yeast. It tastes amazing at from 25% all the way to the 48%I have it aging at with lightly charred apple wood
The rose is in the Rosaceae family, which also includes various edible fruits, such as apples, pears, quinces, apricots, plums, cherries, peaches, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries,...
I have a Jostaberry bush here in the UK, it's a hybrid cross between a Gooseberry and Blackcurrant. It's really on the spectrum, pick the fruit green and it's Gooseberry and pick it late and it's sweat blackcurrant and you can you get everything in between. Makes a nice wine.
My hubby and I started brewing as a hobby after watching your channel, it's so lovely to see your own Mrs get into it too. I would love to try rose spirits !
Love roses, planning on growing me some, nice to know I can use them for alcohol.
I thought about trying to use cherry blossoms, they use those to make cherry blosom extracts, or should you make an exttact first and then add it, or would it taste to fake that way . Maybe with fermented Kola beans or fermented cocoa beans, but I would use 2 different mash bags, one for grain, and the other for cocoa beans, so you could make chocolat after .
9:41 when i was a kid my parents used to buy blackberry nip, a liqueur made from blackberries. I was given a taste and i liked it, by the time i was old enough to buy booze it was no longer available. I’d try to make my own but real blackberries are incredibly hard to find and expensive.
Blackberries grow wild here in the UK. We often go foraging for them. We use them for crumbles.... but they make a very nice wine too.
I love how red your face gets when you drink! Really brings out your Scotish heritage
That was married AF. That was awesome. Erin's vowels are starting to get super New Zealandy, listen when she says "juice".
Cool video.. was nice to see relaxed true personality was fun to watch you guys interacting with each other. Happy valentines
Where I live in Florida you can get ribena at oublix in the international UK section...that aside, i lived in the UK for a while and had it frequently while living there.
In Sweden we have black currant cordial, but not Ribena brand I think.
Erin is correct. Ribena is English. We have in Australia too
Try it with violets - then you will be able to mix up your own aviations. And maybe orange blossom.
Ribena is definitely a UK thing
Now I just need a new Zealand girl to come to me in the U.S. and sip some moonshine.
i go with roses hips in the mash
Rose oil is worth a lot!❤ I've made some pure essential oils before!
We iranians distill roses all the time! But without the vodka😂 we call it golaab which sort of means flower essence. We use it in deserts and stuff but I think it would be great to make some gin with. By the way, the best type for distilling is damask rose which has a better scent and is more palatable overall.
I'm from the North of England and we do have ribena but I think the favourite cordial has to be vimto. They also have a range of vimto sweets and I once used vimto candyfloss or cotton candy with a neutral distillate and it was realy tasty so I might have to try the cordial next.
An entertaining & informative vid, cheers Jess n Erin. Might have to swipe a few of the Missus roses (pink) and give it a try🤫😉
Came here from the hibiscus one. It really speaks to how good it is that Erin can't stop tasting at the beginning!
I would have expected it to be super floral, like maybe annoyingly so. Yet sweet and berry-like is totally not what I would have expected. Did you taste the rose-colored liquid left in the still? If it didn't taste bad I do think that a little of that would have been a nice addition for the color. Though I'm guessing it might not taste very good.
Either way I would be wary of using roses from a florist for this, as cut flowers have usually been sprayed with all sorts of chemicals to keep pests and diseases off of them.
I have made a rose gin with fresh roses and used the petals to turn it pink.
Great video, as usual. love your comment on the roses in the garden, I am an old landscaper and though I do like the flower I think the plant is just stupid in the home garden.
I almost lost an eye to pruning years ago. Not my favorite flower either.
When i was a kid my grama had lots of roses in her gardens. All season she would pluck the petals as the started to droop. At the end of the season she would make rose petal wine. I remember siphoning it to the bottles, making sure to lose the syphon every bottle so I could get a good sip of it each time. Yeah I can recall being a little looped when it was done 😂.
I used Ribena to make liqueur a few times since I started distilling. It was pretty good but a bit medicinal tasting.
Roses are one of my favorite botanicals, I use them in gin recipes and with pear rakija. You should try that combo, Williams/Bartlett pear brandy with roses added to the 2nd run. It's really something.
Such a lucky couple to have each other. ❤
Love the videos. I think it would be cool to see you use some lactase enzyme and distill vodka...maybe make white Russian with it?
"Roses are expensive now!". Just wait a couple weeks. Early /middle February, a dozen costs $50. Early March, $15. Floralists understand "Supply & Demand".
Enjoyed seeing you both on the video. Great interactions between you both.
Ribena is widely known in Denmark. Having a cold flask of premade Ribena in the fridge makes my body all tingly
Trying to make Apple and blackcurrant cider did not go well for me, tasted medicinal and not in a good way. If you remember a cough syrup called Waterbury’s compound that will give you some idea.
Strong couples goals here
This is such a romantic gesture
She really os a lucky woman.
Furthermore when will you still Surströmming?
MY GOD NO! NO! NONONONONONONONONO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
We have Ribena here in Ottawa, Canada! I love it mixed with soda water and vodka!
Got a batch running now, after watching your vid, I’m not getting the really sweet Turkish delight flavour, it is much more subtle, still nice.
Fortunately after watching your vid I noticed wifey has been given a few dozen roses for Valentine’s Day, all I know about them is they didn’t come from me, so I pinched a few to try it out.
Fortunately for me she hasn’t noticed yet.
“Ribes” is he genus name for black currents (and red currents and gooseberries), so Ribena is a great name for black current juice.
It's not a juice. It's cordial/fruit syrup you mix with water. But yes, great name.
UK 100% has ribena, pretty much what I drunk for most of my childhood
Yeah, pretty cute couple ☺️
Erin's American accent breaks when she says 'juice'.
Wonder how the different types of roses will go?
Fun episode. You are lucky to have such a wonderful, understanding wife.
"There was no calculation"
Me whenever I talk to my wife
New to the craft but I’m certainly Hooked!!! I enjoy all your videos mate big love from Australia 🇦🇺
From the US here, I love ribena! I have to buy it special though haha.
Black currant is actually not part of the US flavor lexicon, and was illegal for a long time! Kind of an interesting story if you ever look it up.
Beautiful episode 🎉
You be you.
You both are so cute and lovely, more of that kind of videos please. Great Result by the way, I will try Roses asap. ❤
What a fun outcome!
Where I am from, making spirit from roses has been tradition for centuries. It’s called Gyulova Rakia. It’s genuine Bulgarian brandy. 🙂
Used to get rose hip syrup here in Australia that smelled and tasted a lot like blackberries.
I am doing this, this weekend. thanks guys
Ribena is a Danish thing!
I was expecting Rose Water flavor. This is interesting.
We have Ribena in Denmark
I don’t brew but love your vids.
Happy valentines day
Ribena isn't very common here in the US, but it can be found in most supermarkets by either the baking section or the world foods section
Currant's themselves are extremely rare due to the plant being outlawed to prevent the spread of a plant fungus, some places still have them growing wild though
Personally, I've never had any of either... although I have given great thought to using Ribena for a mash ingredient, I just haven't actually got around to using it yet
Currently working on a Citrus forward Bergamot(Bee Balm) flavored Gin with mostly local ingredients ⚗👨🔬
One of my ingredients is Rose Hips, now I'm excited to see how their flavor will differ from Rose petals 🤔🤷♂

Hahahaha bralovska as soon as I saw the bottle it made me laugh. My dad's boss owns bralovska. They are pretty sickly sweet, they do a really nice vodka if you can get your hands on one.
fun fact: rose water is made with a different variety of roses, damascene or iranian roses, that are not grown for bouquets.
I'm from the states, Georgia to be specific and Ribena sounds like someone's grandma.
How fragrant were the roses on the nose prior to adding them to the pot.
The old school roses are generally sweeter smelling than some of the hybrid varieties.
My thoughts are- a sweeter bouquet gives a sweeter end product ????
Just giving you some info here in Texas it is very common for roses to be planted around the house
Rose tincture ❤ from home grown roses.
You might want to try this again with old european roses. Modern hybrid roses are optimized for looks and don't smell that good while the older european types often smell nice but are plane in looks in comparison with modern hybrid roses.
Did this with hibiscus. Came out tasting like straight jam
Distilling Turkish delights next? Nicely done.
Made some cherry liqueur with essence and it was red and sweet just like the stuff my wife buys. Ordered her a shot at the german club, they called it cherry water, she didn’t like it, it was clear and went down like a fire ball. I couldn’t taste any cherries, probably because my taste buds had to grow back.
We sell Ribena in Canada imported from the UK but so expensive.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 would never thought about roses and vodka😂😂😂😂
Smart man!!!
We have ribena in iceland, it was a childhood classic
I make a bit of mead when I can afford the honey and really want to do a rose mead I think it would be awesome and this video is making me want to do it even more
I did rose Kombucha. Good for color.
"Everything in New Zealand is English" as an Englishman, yeah pretty much. We don't get Tim Tam's though.
So now... Jesse can get in gear and replant the rose bed, get a license, make that, name it
Eau de Erin Rosè
and bless the masses. 😁
Happy VD everybody 💌💝💖
I love seeing wifey , she adds a lot unexpected input that makes me laugh ........ go wifey .......
I ran 4 litres of tails from a corn whisky mash to make a 80% neutral spirit I was going to use to make gin. Is there and reason I can't do this?
Closest thing to actual fruit sodas in NAmerica is Jarritos
You guys seem swell. I bet it's a gift to know you IRL. Cheers!
I'm from Dunedin live in aus and we have ribeena here goes nice with a touch of slightly sour port
Botanically, apple trees and rose bushes are distant cousins. Perhaps that would be even more noticeable in a maceration of rose hips?
You can also get rose water
in Canada you can buy ribena in lots of grocery stores, but it's in the international foods aisle. Definitely an English thing though. Most people here don't even know what it is, and they think it's grape flavor.
Currants are not really appreciated here, even though red currant is an extremely common plant in our forest.
I have 10 blackcurrant bushes at my allotment and 2 redcurrant bushes.
Nice, I recently made great pink gin with pink rose petals in the maceration.
Fun episode
You meanie! You made her hack her roses! Lol!
