Well done. 50lbs of malted corn. Man I am slacking. Lol.
I need to build your hot box so I can dry it better next time...maybe 2 hot boxes for that much grain;-)
I've used a Hooloo 22L still for over 2 years. Quality piece of hardware!
That's good to hear. I'm really impressed with this one. The liquor fairy is going to use the heck out of it...hypothetically:-)
Malt corn makes amazing shine. I steep mine on boiling water for an hour then adjust my gravity to 1.055ish with sugar. I ferment on grain and distill the wash.
Good stuff Bearded ❤
Nice👍
I have yet to do a 100% malted corn mash. I'm definitely going to do one after watching this video. Thanks for sharing.
Good luck on your batch!
Love it. Love the channel. Love your explanations. Well done sir.
I’ve seen that Chinese still on Amazon under a different name “Yuewo”. I’ve seen the Hooloo ones as well, the Yuewo has a copper alembic dome and has 3 different configurations
Careful of the Yuewo stills. That company does sell some Hooloo products, but they also sell knock offs that are sub standard copies.
That HooLoo still is pretty sweet, and it's not insanely expensive. Keep it up B&B, I always learn so much from you.
Thanks! Will do!
Great job. Wish I had the room to malt that much!
I had to build shelves in my garage to get my junk put away just to have room:-)
Just a short message to thank you for your videos! Your enthusiasm got me hooked and the alcohol fairies have just made the most delicious Calvados! Cheers!
Awesome!
Congratulations on your new still, it looks awesome! Welcome to the big(er) batch club.
So much bigger, hahaha!
Thanks for the video, have been thinking about doing this for a while.
Me too. Glad I finally tried it. Give it a go:-)
Good step by step. Looks like really nice equipment you have. I am definitely going to watch your follow up with the non malted corn 🌽. Take care and keep it coming 😉
Thanks 👍
50lbs is a serious effort, respect brother. Enjoyed this video with the last of my fall hopped peach cider. Cheers to the holiday friend :)
Mmmm, sounds delicious!
Thanks Broer, I have to admit, I need to do this once again
Talk soon ciao, ciao😊
Dankie Broer!
Nice job Bearded 😊
Thanks!!
Oh GOD, those puns were terrible! I love it!
I can't help myself sometimes:-)
Good video. Glad your keeping that liquor fairy out of the unemployment line!
Somebody's got to give the little dude a job;-)
Thanks for putting all the effort into producing this video and the liquor from it. Now I have a new goal. Only I’ll need to do 100 lbs of corn for my 25 gallon still.
That's a LOT of Malt! Good luck on your batch:-)
I did a feed corn not malted , milled it about like yours ran it barreled it , it was my absolutely favorite! the back end was a strong hint of candied corn halloween candy .cant wait to make a lot.love your show!
I'm looking forward to the unmalted, not the gelatinizing process, but the drinking part for sure:-)
I can definitely sink my teeth into this one ❤❤
I see what you did there:-)
I totally agree with you I love my sv30 it it a beast for a mid level distiller or even higher it performed absolutely perfect right out of the box , but I do need the control module it just makes sense, but overall if you are starting out and want a great product this one is the way to go.
Yep, it's a really solid machine. I'm going to test out the new controller to see how easy it is to install and use. I'll have an update video about it.
I did a 100% malted corn distillation and it turned out just like you said. I was kinda disappointed but aged it in a badmo for about 6 months and I'm so happy I did! It turned out fantastic!
I would have to say probably my favorite video of all the videos I have watched of yours!! Keep up that good work
Thanks!!!
Great stuff. Glad you're doing a side by side too. 👍
I'm really looking forward to comparing them. Never done it before.
Now that was a huge run brother well done
Thanks broer!
That malting corn stank is what you add to the barrel after starch conversation for fermentation for good sour mash
will you try to make rakı with this new still? ferment red grapes until dry then add 15 ml anise oil per liter of non downproofed spirit and 5 ml of glycerin per liter of downproofed spirit. You can distill your own anise oil if you really want to but i recommend letting it sit in wine for few days instead of trying to distill oil from scratch if you can't find anise oil. very good traditional turkish spirit and doesn't need much aging, it's best when you let it sit 1 month before bottling.
Thank you for the recipe! I'll put it on my list of projects to try:-)
Much appreciated. Enzymes an flavor portion is the bees knees. Will liquer fairies be doing collaboration with liquer elves for christmas? XD
Can confirm, the elves are onboard for a collab;-)
I have a 15l hooloo still. It's a great piece of kit. Not everything that comes out of China is shite. You get what you pay for. Hooloo are great.
Glad to hear it:-)
I had planned on malting small batches of corn until I had enough for a full run. After two batches the project stalled due to several reasons. Kudos to you for all of the work you put into it. I would love a taste to see if I should continue on with my efforts (winky face)
Was happy to see a bearded video in my feed. great video sir.
Thanks! More to come!
I wish I had the space to malt Corn & Wheat definitely cheaper and Bored makes it look so easy LOL.. what 50lb Corn goes for 10 to 20 bucks and malted corn goes for about 60 or 70 bucks.. nice
You can do it 5-10 pounds at a time on your kitchen counter. Check out my other malting videos:-)
Really Enjoyed Your Video , Thanks ! 🐯🤠
Thanks Tiger👍
From my research, I am not an expert at all, but the soil the corn grows in will have an affect on the taste of corn moonshine. Aging will mellow out the flavor. I am sure the sprouting membranes also have affected the initial, unaged taste. Look forward to your next batch.
Well, it's feed corn, so it probably comes from 100 different farms across the Midwest. If I get a chance to use single source grain, I'll test that out.
I started tinkering with malting this past summer with corn and red wheat..had some good results…gonna do more when it gets warm again
Check out "brewing beer the hard way". Excellent blog and YT channel for malting. Also, the Grain Bench channel. He does a lot of malting exotic grain and goes into smoking and kilning with a homemade hot box.
Great video! Your original video you did with the Kentucky Common was one of my first and favorite videos of yours, it also got me into home brewing! Cheers sir!
I love your channel!
@@BeardedBored Thanks! I really appreciate it! Cheers sir!
VERY COOL Stuff!!
Digging your channel!
Didn’t you malt once with a spinning barrel?
What was the issue with that?
I think his video was with a rotating 5 gallon bucket which was maxed out at around 10lbs. That being said I do recall seeing another UA-camr doing the same thing with a 55 gallon barrel so i think that would work better if you’re looking to malt 50-100lbs
Too small for this much, but there are a few YT vids of big barrel tumblers.
I so much appreciate the work that you do, Sir thank you very kindly!
Thank you kindly right back!
Old-timers malted the corn added warm water and sugar and some malted barley and it started working off itself no yeast needed. And before anybody says it doesn't work I have done it myself after my grandpa showed me how to do it. And you can use the same maltid corn and barley two more times without adding yeast.
"I can't ear you" was a miss for me but "too corny?" was a critical hit. Lol
hahahaha! Glad you like the pun. I promise not to _stalk_ you online. 😂
Thanks for the video, like it when the lady laughs
Me too:-)
YES TEFLON TAPE IS MUST ON Stainless NPT threads... with out it and you tighten past hand tight.. IT WILL Cold Weld itself to gether, and you will never get them apart. The swedge lock threads will be fine in fact no tape for those but NPT you will only over tighten with out tape one time and say never again...
Great tip!
this is great content... love this stuff.... can't wait for the unmalted and then barreled and both of that side by side.
Thanks brother:-)
Im really looking forward to that unmalted run. After almost 4 years I'm kind of tired of sugar shine. Unmalted corn is what i want to try next.
I'm really looking forward to it too:-)
Malted corn....🤔 Once through some currently running projects, I might just have to try that!
Worth the effort:-)
So now we know the Liquor Fairy uses Aveeno shampoo!
Hey Bearded, have you...er, I mean the Liquor Fairy done sugarheads on "spent" grain? It's a great way to get a 2nd run out of the same batch of grain. Also helps keep your paws off the All-Grain batch while it ages.
And have you messed with Yellow Label Angel Yeast yet? Think cheat code for mashing in. Sold on Chasing the Craft store! I bet the Liquor Fairy would love some NGS made from rice.
I haven't done a sugar head in a while, but that's a good idea.
Have't tried YL yet, but I have made baijiu with monascus purpureus mold. The YL is way faster and cleaner I think. I do need to try it out.
dude that was a lot of work, appreciate you doing the experiment for us
Thanks brother!
You could also keep the backset for a 100% corn sour mash. Hypothetically, of course
Now you tell me. I spaced out and forgot to save some.
@@BeardedBored Does that mean you’re even more likely to show us an unmalted version? (Comparing the two and setting up for a sour mash, two birds one brew!)
I'll definitely do the unmalted. Not sure if I'll do sour mash for it though. Maybe:-)
Hey Bearded, nice still! I was expecting an upsized version of your “robot” malting drum but here you are kickin’ it old school. 50 lbs malted corn yields one gallon of spirit? Makes me tired. I’m more of a single malt guy since it is easy and high yield, but corn whisky from feed corn is an attractive proposition. Thanks, Bearded!
It is a lot of work, but if you're only using it as an adjunct grain for bourbon it will go a lot further.
@@BeardedBored as someone said a ways back, “Let’s go find something to do!”😏
Love your work!! Happy holidays!❤❤🎉
Thank you! You too!
Awsome vid big fella 👌I love malting all kinds of grain! My clothes dryer is now in my shed to rid those knarly shoots n roots! Keep them good vids coming 👍
If I come across an old dryer I may get it to use as a malt dryer.
We're going to set this aside just to give it a fair shake sounds like you want to play around and make 👍.
I have been following your channel ever since Apple palsy that was my first video and I have been making it ever since and I have recommended your channel, total people just because of that one video and they loved it and follow 👍❤️
As a beginner in the craft, thank you
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you so much that was a real good one👍
Thanks so much!
I didn’t know that R2D2 is a liqueur Fairy,,,, I want one
I found a reddit thread years ago where someone did the math on Star San concentrate measurement for a 32 Oz spray bottle.
It worked out to 1/4 tsp star san per 32oz container
Thanks for the tip!
I found your channel cos Jesse told me i should in one of his videos, I hit like early cos you were funny, and then came the star wars reference, I wanted to hit like again.........very cool video, cheers mate.........
Awesome! Thank you!
Just gotta say I’ve been following you for a while and live the content. Been brewing beer for a couple years and hoping to hypothetically have the liquor fairy visit me in the San Antonio area. Keep it up
Good luck on your first batch...hypothetically:-)
For the unmalted run will you use enzymes or the 'magic' yeast??
Same as this one, enzymes. I want to make it as close as possible so it's a straight comparison.
Love this. I need to send you some of jj Jackson’s malted blue corn whiskey. It’s a great ride. And would be a cool side by side comparison
Sounds great! Also, sounds like an idea for a video:-)
StarSan…. Interesting idea. Prevent mold. Nice work on this video!
Good evening Bearded and bored. So, after having malted sorghum and made beer from it in Tanzania, I'm now in the land of the Galic distillation fairies, namely France. Can you answer a question please? Once the fairies have done their best on whatever fruit/grain I feed them do I, after the 2nd distillation, save the resulting alcohol at the 'high ABV? Or, do I get the fairies to 'cut' the alcohol to my desired strength, 42% ABV etc and then store/age it? Any info gratefully recieved 😊
For brandies, the most common advice I've gotten is to store the spirit at high proof in glass for 3 to 6 months, then proof down to drinking strength, then store for another month or two if possible.
If you're doing clear grain spirit, then just proof down to drinking strength and give it a day or so before enjoying.
If you plan to wood age, keep it between 55-65% to age, then proof down. Same for grain and fruit spirits.
Forget the oven, throw it in the smoker!
Going to try it one of these days.
Popcorn said if we don't take off those roots they'll add a bitter flavor, so we rubbed the dried kernels over the screens, knocking off all the dried roots prior to grinding, and with fresh malted corn no yeast is necessary, for the amylase and wild yeasts will properly convert sugars.
Thanks
Thank you so much!!!
You dropped this video as i was grabbing shit for a tapache
Awesome!
Solid Alec Guinness impression
Make sure you get plugs too
Really appreciate all the peripheral ingenuity of the supporting processes like the drying racks and the draining equipment, the drying canvas etc. Keep it simple and affordable
Man i love your canal ❤learn a lot from your content ❤🤗😎
That is one bad a** looking still! Did your liquor fairy like how it ran? Something like that may be my next still.
Liquor Fairy loves the new toy:-)
why would you run any all-grain mash through any kind of reflux still? genuine question not an accusation never made one im still enamored of the sugar wash,s in my t500 . i just thought all, all grain washes were meant to be pot stilled to take the flavor over? more videos by the way im subscribed to 80 youtube channels but its still a joy to see you post one more than most if not all! cheers m8 and merry xmass
A lot craft distilleries do one and done runs with reflux and 4 plates. I assume they get similar flavor to a standard pot still stripping run + 1-2 spirit runs while saving on energy/labor costs.
This was really just to see if it could be done, and how much flavor I'd get out of it. I have a lot of viewers who have only column stills and make whiskey, so I figured I'd give it a try. Since this one is modular, it's easy to run it in a pot still configuration. I got a surprising amount of flavor out of it with 2 plates for the spirit run. If I had run reflux that time too, it probably would have reduced it to a "light" whiskey flavor.
Good stuff
Appreciate it👍
Good video! You don't mention using any copper in the still. I know George likes to run w/o copper. Would be interesting to see a side by side comparison of with/without copper on the same fermentation. Would do it myself but my liquor fairy is getting pretty lazy just now.
The bubble plates in the column are copper:-)
If your going to do 100% corn comparisons can you throw in a yellow label angel yeast wash as well please?
Not on this next one. I'm going to do the unmalted exactly the same to keep the variables limited so we have a clear result.
Love your content. Just wondering if you could tell me the name of the company you get your charred wood to age spirits and what was the name of the wood you were hyping so much? I think it was from Brazil or something.
Barrel Char Wood Products - the wood is amburana wood. For actual barrels - BadMotivator Barrels
Star-San

Awsome bro you done well
Thank you so much 😀
awesome video!
Thanks!
Hello from Ukraine! I recently started watching your channel. My liqueur fairy mostly brings me neutral spirits with a strength of 96%+ for infusions, gins, etc. I've just bought equipment for making homemade whiskey. On your new still, is the dephlegmator of the jacketed type or does it resemble a revolver? The revolver type significantly stops the esters.
The dephlegmator and condenser of this set of distillers are welded by putting several thinner stainless steel tubes into a thicker stainless steel tube. The shape will indeed resemble a revolver.
Does the Liquor Fairy have stickers?
Put some copper and porcelain in the stack. It will remove all the burn from the taste 😂
No CHIT??? YES CHIT..🎉
I appreciate your experiments. I can't find the answer to this: what if sweetcorn with the sh2 ( super-sweet) gene is used? This gene means this corn cannot convert sugar to starch in the first place. Surely this means that the malting process is unnecessary and adding refined sugar should be unnecessary.
I'm missing something; BB went through the percentages of dead through over modded corn but didn't mention tossing anything. Do you use only the goldilocks stuff or is it all flavor?
Use it all dead kernels included. Even if 20% is not malted, 80% is. So the flavor will not be effected.
So, let's say hypothetically, I went to tractor supply and got 50 lbs of whole cornell feed corn. Could I do this?
Yes
Lets just say cracked corn with molasses on top pitch some y in the water at 89 degrees sit for a week and a half😂
For a kick add some sweet feed with the crack corn
Yes, but it definitely needs to be whole kernel without any additives. I had to go to a feed store to get some. And Walmart deer corn would not even sprout for me.
@@BeardedBored sweet feed with cracked corn heated up for a hour put in some molasses at 125 degrees. You’ll like it . Don’t buy the sprout shit. What I’m telling you is old school 🤣
Great info..
Thanks!
How do you defend your malt drying etc from rats?
Other than keep the garage door closed, I don't do anything special.
Gave a thumbs up after the first 5 seconds… good corny puns.
Hahaha, thanks!
Hey, Bearded, I'm considering buying one of these hooloo stills. Now that your fairy has had some time with it, is there anything you would change?
What about the starsand where's the link?😊
Sorry, forgot to add it. I just posted it in the description section - amzn.to/47S19zY
Bearded I need your help
You made a video and mentioned a Lalvin yeast that you said brings out more flavour than the EC1118 does but cannot find your video that you mentioned it in 😫 , can you remember what yeast it was ? Thanks
Lalvin K1V-1116 - amzn.to/3wsBH7i
@@BeardedBored Thank you my good man
A USA just still company that doesn’t make milk can stills, has heat controls build in, and has (some) safety features! You sir have me a still boner! 😂
What’s the point of malting if you still have to add liquid amylase in order to convert the starches? Seems like a lot of extra effort for the same thing
No barley?
Nope, not this time.
that is amaizeing
Is deflegnator really a word??
Dephlegmator is a word, but it sounds made up:-)
If I remember my math, StarSan is a 640:1 ratio. 1ml will make a little over a pint. 1.5 should do a quart sprayer, or close enough to make no never mind.
huh after all that work you killed the enzymes with boiling water and ended up using industrial enzymes, what was the point of the malting if you could not do a mash rest with the corn on it's own for conversion??
The real point of the video for me was to see if malting adds a distinct flavor, something worth going through the trouble of malting for it. I plan on doing an unmalted batch with enzymes as a comparison, so I wanted to use the same exact process for both batches to reduce the variables that might skew the results. Also, I've used enough malted corn to know that the conversion is rarely as good alone as it is with added enzymes. Corn has a super low diastatic power (about 30L), so it can _usually_ convert its own starch, but that can vary with home malted corn. Easier to get the data I need by taking that variable out.
i understand i wish you explained all this though, i know malted corn has low dp but was wondering how much malted corn is necessary to convert a certain amount of unmalted corn, i have no idea about how to do the math as its been a while but like you said even 100% is still not as good as using added enzymes still would like to see what it would taste like without the added enzymes if there is much flavor distinction or not , i think belmont farms uses a portion of both malted and unmalted but anyways i hate doing any of that kind of math and from now on been thinking of purchasing alpha and beta amylase enzymes for all my grain conversions if i can find a cheap large quantity of it online as im sure my local brew shop would be more expensive and there are too many options out there online was wondering if you can recommend a brand from maybe amazon or somewhere but im in canada and have no idea about the stupid shipping laws on such item they are anal here and wont allow us to import many things specially alcohol but i think enzymes might be ok id like to use them for easy brewing of beer or mashes from now on as i do not want to add sugar anymore , btw have you heard of angel yeast? its like magic enzyme that works in cold temps even and also has the yeast included so it does both jobs in one pitch , thank you for your reply bud @@BeardedBored
