An intriguing wildlife moment has been viewed over 16 million times on TikTok, as a stressed deer warned a homeowner of a nearby black bear that appeared on the property.
In the forests of the surrounding areas of Portland, Oregon, this cabin resident was capturing the routine visit from Ziggy, a deer that has been visiting the property every morning for several years.
But this particular visit was different with the deer’s focus firmly on the treeline as she was stomping through the backyard.

This is classic stamping. Deer do this when they feel danger is close by to warn other deer to be alert. This also impacts their scent into the ground so that other deer can smell the "caution sign". They could smell the bear, but were not sure where it was located.

Will a black bear take down a full grown deer? I truly don’t know…I thought they mainly ate fish & berries.
Interestingly Interesting 😮
@rebelchaser can they? Yes. Do they? Not as often as people think. Black bears specifically tend to stick to their more less bloody food options (berries etc)

Eh, the forest usually gets oddly quiet whenever there’s a predator around buuuut I live in southeast Alabama and bears don’t frequent this area.
@AussBosss generally but you should start paying attention to bird calls. You hear how most of the birds got quiet but one continued to sound off in a very specific sequence that it repeated over and over? Birds have specific calls to warn other birds that predators are I the area, and even will adjust that call for different TYPES of predators. For birds, bears aren't a huge danger to them specifically so it's a general warning call but if there's like a snake around or racoon- especially something that can climb trees and is known to raid nests- they have different calls to warn each other, even of other predatory birds. Mockingbirds- which I know you know because I lived in Mobile for over 30 years and they are EVERYWHERE in this whole region- are protectors of other songbirds, are super noisy and can get really aggressive. I've seen 3 mockingbird attacking a hawk that was flying for all it was worth, tryingto get away, while they took turns dive bombing it midair from different directions, all of them screeching like banshees.
this is amazing, this is my first time seeing how an animal would warn their pack about incoming danger. this should be in documentary videos.
David Attenborough would love this
They vote, too. We see coyote families all the time, and they have little mime discussions on whether they want to go one direction or another. Finally one will aim in the direction he wants to go, and the others pick some other, or the one he wants, but they all go the way the majority wants to go.

Both animals are so beautiful. That was just a juvenile bear. What gift to be able to see both like that and have a deer friend.

I sea what you did!
You can't be friendly with bears.. they are predators . If you feed bears then they go through garbage they get too close to people they scare people and they attack children. There was a 10-year-old in the Smoky mountains that got attacked by a bear because someone was feeding them. And they equate people with food.. wild animals are wild and if you care about them stay away from them let them live their life.
I think that deer are such beautiful animals. I often wonder just how intelligent they are. I drive thru this one business's campus that has a public access road thru it (not completely altruistic; they made it public access and requested the bus cut thru so the state would pay for the extensive maintenance it needed at the time the change occurred). This campus is also a small nature preserve because, in addition to profits, they're also interested in conservation. After asking really politely, they let me take wildlife photos for personal use, so I drive thru there every chance I get. There have been several does so close I could've reached out my window and petted them (hypothetically, of course, simply as a reference for distance). As I sat there with my blinkers on, taking pictures with my phone, this one doe, I swear she was posing for me! She'd move her head, shift slightly this way or that way like she knew that not only was I, personally, not a threat, but I was taking pictures of how beautiful she was. After my arm got tired, and I sat my phone down, she made a gesture like a nod and trotted off, prancing as though she were quite pleased with herself. When I was looking in her eyes on that autumn afternoon, I know I saw intelligence; intelligence, dignity, and wisdom. Perhaps these traits aren't expressed in human terms because they aren't humans. But, I know to one degree or another, they are intelligent creatures. (Anybody that says animals don't feel emotions like we do is full of 💩 because I've seen different with the evidence of my own eyes in dogs, cats, and other animals; the same thing with possessing intelligence, even though the questions arise as to what degree and how it's expressed). I wonder, since all life on earth shares a common origin point of coming from DNA, if that's perhaps why animals protect us sometimes, because on the base programming level, we are all connected in the web of life. That's my thought, anyway, pared down to the most universal way of wording it I could think of (as my hypothesis is equal parts secular and non secular, but to be tolerant of the existence of views that are different than mine, even though some of them would not extend the same courtesy in return and even though I don't personally agree with some of them, since this is supposed to be a space where that's OK, I've tried to be as broad in my wording as possible).
I certainly agree with you and you did a lovely job of expressing the truth as we both understand it, while trying to avoid “triggering” those who take offense so very easily.
Yes, deer are known to exhibit a behavior called "stomping" or "foot stomping" when they sense potential danger. This behavior involves the deer stamping its front hooves on the ground, which serves several purposes:
1. **Alert Other Deer**: The noise created by the stomping can alert other deer in the area to potential danger. It acts as a warning signal to be on high alert.
2. **Intimidate Potential Threats**: The stomping can also be a way to signal to the predator or threat that the deer is aware of its presence. This might discourage the predator from pursuing an attack, as it loses the element of surprise.
3. **Identify the Threat**: By stomping and making noise, the deer might be trying to provoke a reaction from the potential threat, helping the deer identify what it is dealing with.
While deer typically use stomping to communicate with other deer or to warn off predators like coyotes or dogs, it could theoretically be used to alert humans if a deer perceives them as part of the same environment and potential ally against a common threat, such as a bear.
Edit: To those asking, yes, this info is indeed from a ChatGPT reply to my query on this topic. I thought it would be obvious, as I didn't edit the format.
Thanks for the concise explanation.
It's like learning another language to communicate.

I love them. We get a family of deer that bed down under our big tree in our backyard. The branches go all the way to the ground, but there’s an arch on one side where they always go inside. She seems to always birth two little babies and we get to watch them grow.
PLEASE NEVER INTERFERE/INTERACT WITH THEM, like feeding them or trying to pet their babies, and such. If you find one of their babies, DO NOT TOUCH THEM OR DISTURBED THEM in any way shape or form. The mother is most likely feeding somewhere and WILL ALWAYS RETURN.

@@davedavey250 It's actually just having an aneurysm and isn't warning anyone. Or rather, that would be the case if it wasn't all a simulation in The Matrix. Since none of it is real, nothing at all happened.

What a smart mama deer to know she can warn you . That is a God thing for you .
She wasn’t warning you she was alerting other deer of danger.
Yes exactly ❤people should pay attention to what other animals say
What other animals say? 🤣🤣🤣 Lol
@@massey4business Animals talk - people don't listen (I thought everyone was familiar with the saying). x
Job 12:7-10, the Bible says, “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you”. The passage continues, “Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?” .
The passage suggests that humans can learn from all of creation, including animals, birds, the earth, and the sea. It concludes by stating that the Lord controls the life of every living thing and the breath of humanity.

Animals are amazing. She's a great communicator. Good on you for picking up the clues. 😊
I never knew that was a danger alert
It's instinctive. She's not consciously deciding to warn her.
😂
No they're really not, this is not deer telling her there is bear. Idk how young you are but animals aren't like that no.
@@SpicyTexan64exactly
She was warning the other deer, not you. She didn't care about you when she looked at you; she was gauging your reaction, but quickly realized you were an unreliable source of information.
She's a good Mama and he's a Big Boy. The Animal world is just Amazing. A lot More in Tune than Us!
As soon as she said, "bear" I was like, that's a good impression of their feet as they walk.
The other deer doesn't appear to be a fawn
Nor is that a "big boy" maby a 3yr old black bear. But she is right about herself being out of tune 😂😂😂
@@jjdajunecorrect. That’s a juvenile bear
I love this comment
She wasn't warning you , she was warning her fawns
She best sit on it cuz nobody warns DA FAWNS.
Certainly. But depending how familiar she is with this woman, might have been addressed at her as well. EITHER that sideways look means she's also concerned about the human presence and sparing a side-eye for the 'lesser potential danger', OR (if semi-tame) the direct eye contact is a communication directed at the human to say pretty much 'be sure to pay attention, I've spotted something'.

They’re all beautiful precious babies 🙏🩵
They taste sooo good too
The last thing you all need is a mama bear with 3 Cubs.
Respect 🫡 Nature
They are not warning you. They are warning each other. 😂
Nature is a warning to everyone. We are a part of nature. The deer is warning everyone in her surroundings of the danger and she does look directly at the humans in the scene, which includes them on the warning. They were alerted by the deer which is why the man was ready to fend it off… so yeah, the deer warned them 💀
Exactly. Why are humans so self centered 😅
😂 correct
Indeed, Lol 😂
Right? Crazy people thinking they are connected to these animals
Even in warning she is so delicate and quiet. So cool!!
That deer was not warning you lady lmao
That’s truly amazing how animals alert each other when danger appears. You are blessed to have that connection!! ❤🙏🏻❤
Animals are snitches
The deer wasn't warning the human
That is incredible the way she is telling you by imitating the way a bear walks. Never seen this before.
People thinking deer are talking to them. What a freak
She's not imitating the way the bear walks, she's stomping. Deer do this to alert other members of the herd of something amiss, like potential danger
The bear is beautiful too!
We should all be thankful that we have this nature still in our country 🙏🏻
I think we are all pretty thankful. Remember they were here before us, they'll be here long after us.

Deer do that all the time. They leave sent from between their hooves to warn others that there is something in the area to be aware of. I believe it’s called the interdigital gland.
The birds: "BeACH GET OUTTA HERE U GONNA TURN INTO DORITOESSSSSSSS”

@@ingeabrahamsen4684I don’t think it was a warning for a human, it’s probably just instinct to warn other deer that just so happened to be infront of a human.
@@williamgass9242 Her nonverbal way to communicate the walk of a bear coming.

If we move around in nature, not to hunt but to observe, and keep our minds open, we will start to realize that we are part of the animal kingdom too.

Deers are BEAUTIFUL AMAZING CREATURES. God bless them
😂 that deer was trying to sacrifice the person. deer can only run at speeds of 30 mph and black bears speeds of 35 mph. the average human male…maybe 13 mph. we all should know by now running triggers a bears predatory instinct.
