Mitch was an absolute genius at one liners. Most comedians work through telling stories or building off topics. This dude just straight up told JOKES.

He had all the skills any comic needs; timing, identity, strong sets. What sets him apart is how he links the set up and punch line in the jokes. There’s no word play; it’s all semantic links built on objects or processes. The map joke at 00:30 is a good example; he’s judged how well the audience can differentiate between pins that record journeys and the ones that hold up the map. The audience probably needs a split second to process it but when they make the connection, they payoff is worth it. It’s much harder to write image-based one-liners than word play one liners.

“I love animal crackers, but have just one question?? Are they made from real animals?” Hedberg was the best one liner comedian. If my version differed from the original, many apologies. A recovered Heroin addict that almost got grounded in his own fashion, meaning I was on the way to a rehab and my ID was missing numbers from all the “smashing” that takes place in an addictive lifestyle. Then searching me, smelled an embarrassing odor..... that was Necrosis from an IV site that I guess I negated for a month or three. Long, short. I almost lost my leg, let alone the finite opportunity to save my life. Decades in Hell. 7 months out. It’s very sad to see that talented people have to die for a schmuck to get a chance.

I had a crippling addiction to opiates and benzos for about 15 years of my life. I lived in deep regret for about the first 4 years of my recovery, but I’ve turned my regret into empathy for those who are suffering and those who paid the ultimate price as the result of addiction. Mitch Hedburg, Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain, Chris Farley, and many other endlessly talented people brought us immeasurable joy through one of the hardest tribulations a person can endure, and I’ll always remember them for it.
