Everyone had no expectations at all because everyone expected just ports and remasters but man we actually got new games, I'm exited for the new Mario and Luigi game and the actual Zelda game,it looks fun
i think given the circumstances, its actually impossible to have expected anything better than what we got. obviously no ultra heavy hitters like a new 3D mario, 3D zelda, etc, but a ton of really great concepts and gameplay shown, not just CG trailers.

You really think it could be? The idea of this really intrigues me. It also makes me imagine a world where Monolith created a Mario game with a huge convoluted plot 😆
If they’re using less employees as Zelda devs after TOTK, I’d say they probably could make games other than Xenoblade. But I hope to see their other new IP at some point too though
It felt like a conclusion to the Switch's library. Everything that had been missing on it and we had expected on previous consoles (mainly handhelds like 3DS) has now made an appearance: a Mario & Luigi game, a new Mario Party that isn't messed up, all DKC games are now playable, a new 2D Zelda, and Metroid Prime 4 is finally coming. None of these are "big" releases (other than Metroid Prime 4), so we should see the grand announcements next year with the Switch 2. I would have expected some re-releases (Zelda WW/TP HD, Prime 2+3 HD) but those could still be announced later to fill up the time period until the next console comes out.
I agree with Ash so much - No direct will be perfect until a new Rhythm Heaven. But I’ll give this one a 9.9/10. It’s been so long since the last direct that introduced multiple must-buys for me.
I can own the Marvel VS games on a cart soon. As a 90s arcade kid, that's like a $300 game. As in one I'd buy a Switch for. I'm so excited for that release.
DQ is my favorite series so seeing DQ III like that is a dream, I wish fans of other series could get something like it too for their favorite games, Pokemon Gen 2 or 3 in that style would be amazing.
@@SeveraLF I’d be down but not for a remake. Give us a new adventure in the same region (but they’re already doing that with the Legends series so idk)
Is Capcom the best company when it comes to game preservation? Between their Arcade collections, Mega Man Collections, Ace Attorney, Resident Evil, probably more... it just feels like they're the most proactive, not only when it comes to preserving their own history, but making it available for the market to play and enjoy. It really feels at this point that everything is more a question of "when" than "if"
Square-Enixis hobbled somewhat by messy IPs (Xenogears and anything by Quartet), but they do alright with everything except Dragon Quest. Now that they own Lufia's rights, I'd love to see Lufia 2 SNES remastered and Lufia 1 relaxe to play like Lufia 2.
Definitely. Capcom could be better, but they at least try to preserve their games. I feel Sega at least deserves mention for making honest attempts. Konami practically doesn't care, Square is a flip between if they do or don't (and to be fair, they've been a lot better lately about trying to preserve games), Nintendo still isn't all that great at it but is getting better, and Namco I would say is the absolute worst. Namco pretty much makes no effort to preserve anything that isn't their arcade games. I'm honestly surprised they even made sure Vesperia or Symphonia are available outside of their original systems.
Only Ace Attorney game we're missing in rerelease form would be the Professor Layton Crossover... Wonder what would need to happen for us to get that again...
If I have to give this an rating, I would say an 10/10. And that's mostly because of the Dragon Quest & Metroid stuff as I'm an big fan of those franchise. Don't get me wrong. The Mario & Luigi comeback, an new Zelda title with Zelda finally getting her own game were wonderful and others like Marvel vs. Capcom & other Capcom collection were wonderful. But after waiting 3 years for an footage of Dragon Quest 1-3 2D-HD Remakes and 7 years for an footage of Metroid Prime 4, this was worth it.
I think people’s expectations for Prime 4 might be too high. Metroid Prime has always been a lot slower than something like Halo. Its greatest strength is the setting and tone. People expecting a giant action game will probably be let down. I think the best thing Retro could do is have a great multiplayer mode. People who get into Metroid Prime hoping for a FPS could be satisfied if it’s got a robust multiplayer mode when the story is still about exploration. There’s a reason Metroid has never been a huge sales success. Despite being one of the most influential game series, it’s still niche.
Honestly, this recent Direct was excellent! Literally some of the best announcements we have had! New Mario & Luigi RPG, Metroid Prime 4 finally revealed, New Zelda game where Zelda is the main protagonist, Marvel Vs Capcom collection, Fantasian and Hello Kitty Island breaking free from Apple Arcade, and Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D! So many great announcements! Sure, we did get some stumbles what with Nintendo Switch Sports Basketball, the Game Mill Looney Tunes game, and Metal Slug Attack, but the positives outweighed the negatives here. Though one of the more disappointing things for me was the lack of any updates on Pokemon Legends Z-A. I know that The Pokemon Company has a mind of its own, but even Pokemon games get a spotlight in a general Nintendo Direct occasionally... Anyway... Can't wait for the new Denpa Men to arrive on Switch next month! Oh, and points taken off for mentioning Last of Us and Last of Us 2. Because reasons...
45:16 about that, Prime 4 says Cosmic year 20X9...... Super Metroid supposedly takes place in the Cosmic year 20X7. Maybe a research video about each game and what year in the Cosmic Calender it takes place could be needed.

I loved it, too. For me the best was: - A 2D Zelda game. Those are my favourites and the first I ever played was A Link to the Past and I'm guessing the map will be quite similar? Anyway, I loved what I saw of it and the fact we actually get to play as Zelda in so awesome. - Tales of the Shire spoke directly to my hobbit heart, I can't wait to try it out. - Stray! I've played it on steam, but it's one of my favourites and if you love cats you'll enjoy this one a lot! It's such a good adventure with a nice story and plenty of kitty quirks!
The Romancing Saga 2 disrespect. That game was the most surprising thing in the direct for me. Can't believe how polished it looks compared to the newest saga game that just came out only a few months ago.
I'm actually going to be a bit sad if the Switch version of Metroid Prime 2 is just a phoned-in HD port and not a big boy Remaster in the style of Metroid Prime Remastered. Metroid Prime 2 was actually my first Metroid game ever and I haven't played it since. I really want it to be more than the bare minimum.
It would feel wrong not to do it, 2 & 3 are less popular overall but still deserve the same treatment, 2 is my favorite overall and 3 especially would benefit the most from a remaster treatment
I’d say this was definitely the best direct in a long while. While the 2023 ones were solid, there’s no denying that there were a bit too Mario-centric, with the biggest heavy-hitters being Super Mario RPG, Mario Wonder and Paper Mario TTYD. But here they not only continue the Mario RPG train with the long-awaited return of Mario&Luigi, but a brand new 2D Zelda where you play as Zelda, a new Mario party, and of course, ending with our first real glimpse of Prime 4. And that’s on top of all the exciting third-party stuff like Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D (and remakes of 1 and 2 next year as well), Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, Fantasian and Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection BABEEEEEY. With the first half of the year being pretty port and remake heavy and it most likely be the Switch’s last full year, most people (including me) were just expecting more of the same. But I’ve never been more glad to be proven wrong, and it’s suffice to say that the Switch is gonna go out on a bang.👌🏽Like, it’s getting more games on its SEVENTH year than either PS or Xbox on their 4th, which’s totally bonkers.
By the way, Steve I think they've removed Norimaro from the game. I've seen Japanese Tweets about not being able to find him in the game (unless you need to unlock him somehow). The copyright logos for the comedy company and whatnot can't be found in the game, so he's probably not in it.
“The tip of the iceberg, literally” is an oxymoron. The tip of the iceberg is a figure of speech, as in the root of the word “figurative,” as in the opposite of literal.
The connotation of “literally” has become a lot different, I think they know that. When a lot of people use the word now, it’s just used for dramatization, not for actually being “literal” about something
Best Direct since E3 2021. Both having a new Zelda, a new Mario Party, a new Metroid, other stuff I liked (M&L Brotherhood and Age of Calamity DLC respectively) and both hard carried by the fighting game-related news (MVC Collection and Kazuya in Smash)
@@DontKnowDontCare6.9 I was stating a fact, and then using that fact to provide reasoning on how metroid prime 4 could be a launch title for the switch 2. Also, while twilight princess was a cross-gen title, it wasn't pushed nearly as much as breath of the wild. Nintendo was really pushing hard that "if you want to play BotW, get a switch".
@@Matanumi They're Mochtroids, not Metroids, and those were only in Super. Timeline placement is murky but it's not impossible for the game to be set either after Federation Force, as was expected, or after Super (Tanabe suggested in 2015 that he wanted Prime 4 to riff on Prime 2 but with time travel instead of light/dark worlds, so it's possible that explains why there are still Space Pirates after Super - they've been brought forward in time, perhaps)
I wasn't expecting a lot from this direct since the Switch 2 is coming next year, but it ended up exceeding my expectations. Mario and Luigi is back, we're getting an official localization of Ace Attorney Investigations 2, a new Zelda game with Zelda as the main character, and Metroid Prime 4 is finally coming. Though I think Prime 4 will end up being a cross gen title like Breath of the Wild.

Probably my favorite direct ever personally
It’s subjective I really like this Nintendo direct but I also love all of them in their owns ways that goes with games and other gaming companies direct in general as long as the games are good that’s all the matters ❤
Jon was right, there was no way people remember all the cool stuff that happened in the Direct. it's like they had a little of something for everybody, including games that went to a bit of obscurity. Denpamen was a deep cut, but not as much of a deep cut as Phantom Brave. NISA's (at least for western audiences) One-off SRPG, that was made back in the days when Disgaea was still a relatively new series. Now after nearly 20 years, they actually come up with a brand new followup to the game, making it a series. (Apparently, 12 years ago Japan had some browser game of Phantom Brave, but I heard it did real poorly.) The first one did get a port to the Wii, and then ported to modern systems like the Switch, as part of their Prinny collection series. Kind of like how Nippon Ichi recently revived Rhapsody a Musical Adventure (to finish the trilogy), I thought there was no way they'd revisit Phantom Brave.
My Prime 4 prediction is that it's been done for a while now, and they've been spending this extra time making a "remastered" version for the next console. And they just didn't release this version yet, because maybe they think both versions will do better marketing-wise as a cross-gen release
The problem with doing a Kid Icarus: Uprising sequel is what Ash mentioned about what could be holding back a remaster, you'd lose much of the original's charm by recasting everyone. Unfortunately, Nintendo's *MUCH* cheaper about voice acting than they were back when Uprising was made. Even looking at Smash, most of the returning characters from that game are either uncredited (Pit/Pittoo) or recast (Palutena, Viridi, etc.). Not to mention that Sakurai's likely busy with Smash 6 at this point.
I feel ya Daniel, I wanted Mario's Rainbow Castle and Western Land in Superstars, to get them in SMPJ made me so happy! It looks like such a good selection of boards!
I see the Metroid timeline like this: the first game is canon either way, then it splits and becomes two different stories between the Prime series and the other”regular” series. Otherwise, how much does she have time to do between Metroid 1 and 2? It made sense when it was just one game, but now there’s like six of them.
@@jenerossitea9247 I know, I’m just saying it’s getting a bit ridiculous with how many games they’ve cramming in between those two. It’s not like they had all these games in the series planned back in the early 2000’s.
I’m sorry, but if you seriously think you need to confront your enemies head on to be a “bad ass”, you need your head checked and priorities sorted out. Zelda’s way, making use of her intellect and wisdom in the new game, is more than bad ass enough. She doesn’t need to be a traditional fighter to be strong.
It‘s the cursed thinking a lot of people have nowadays where they think a good female character is only one fights tough and acts like a badass. As if the world had only that one type of females. Tough women come in all different forms, you don‘t have to be a fighter to be considered a strong woman.
I think the best direct was the one that revealed Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door. This one was good but I don't think it's as good as that one was.
It was a more noteworthy Direct than I expected; an original Mario and Luigi when a remake was predicted was certainly something else! DKC Returns, Mio, Stray, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Dragon Quest 3 (which I didn't realise was the first for the trilogy chronologically), Ace Attorney were all great announcements for me... Oh, and Prime 4 was there too I guess
what does it mean that the best Nintendo direct comes at the end of the system's lifecycle? Are we actually not that excited about new hardware, and companies actually produce their best material when they're in a low-stakes mode while presumably better stuff is being "saved" for the successor? They don't need to impress, just keep us interested in the brands, and the freedom to create in that environment is actually the secret to better games?
Little surprised you're all excited about the BotW style exploration in a 2D Zelda, I'm not sure why I am though. I hope after this they do a more traditional one.
Its very obvious that the Switch 2 is the target plattform for Metroid Prime 4 and the Switch 1 version is the downgraded port, rather than the other way around, cause the gameplay was very reminiscent of how Switch ports of PS4 games usually look like.
My thoughts exactly, this looked great on Switch but I can already imagine them showing the transition of graphics between this and Switch 2 using this footage.
I didn't really find that to be obvious at all. In my eyes, it looked like they were using the same old Metroid prime engine, a la, Metroid prime remastered.

I’m asking because I noticed gba Mario tennis and golf are not on nso yet and I’m thinking maybe Nintendo will just do a hd/4k remaster of GameCube Mario golf and tennis with 2025/26 since over 10 million people owns switch golf and tennis and they announce gba golf and tennis around those possible remasters. This just a tinfoil theory because it would be smart to repeat what they did for switch 1 with wiiU ports but with GameCube and 3ds ports. Like for example f-zero gx remaster, both gcn star Fox remastered, Kirby air ride, kid Icarus, both 3ds Kirby, Sami’s returns, Luigi mansion 1 hd, Zelda ww/tp with link between worlds. All those games can fill out 2 years worth with new games in between for switch 2
I dunno, with the crazy amount of hiring Nintendo's been doing lately, do we know that they haven't just fully absorbed Alpha Dream's former employees?

1. the first entirely new 2D _Zelda_ game in over a decade: _amazing._ 2. Zelda herself is the protagonist; cool, I guess… I’m not sure how I feel about the “echo” mechanic… it looks like it could get tedious, especially the UI, like scrolling forever to find the specific object you want… hope not. and I _do_ hope Link shows back up at some point in the game, or Zelda just gets a sword 🤷🏻♂️ 3. it’s the same art style as the _Link’s Awakening_ remake: ehh… I didn’t really like it then, and it looks only mildly better now… it’s just too shiny. the world looks less rigid, though, and Zelda’s movement looks better than Link’s, like they added transition frames when changing direction, etc 👍 4. still no _Wind Waker_ and _Twilight Princess_ on Switch: _excruciating._

This is a very on point way to describe it😅
Everyone had no expectations at all because everyone expected just ports and remasters but man we actually got new games, I'm exited for the new Mario and Luigi game and the actual Zelda game,it looks fun
i think given the circumstances, its actually impossible to have expected anything better than what we got. obviously no ultra heavy hitters like a new 3D mario, 3D zelda, etc, but a ton of really great concepts and gameplay shown, not just CG trailers.
1 ultra heavy hitter. Metroid Prime 4.
@@danielstuckwisch9343That was not a new game announcement though.
@@leonro basically was a new game announcement at this point lmao
Great surprises, didn't expect such big hitters in the final year (I did expect a Prime 4 teaser but I'm still happy we got that)
Peak Direct and peak reaction/discussion videos. Please do more of these.
M&L, Fantasian, DraQue III HD-2D alongside announcing DraQue I-II HD-2D, Capcom Marvel Fighting Collection, Romancing SaGa 2 remake, Ace Attorney Investigations Collection (finally we get 2!), Memories In Orbit, The New Denpa Men, Darkest Dungeon sequel, Stray somehow ported to Switch, A Zelda Legend of Zelda game, *and* Metroid Prime 4 finally proves it's not dead and that subtitle!
Retro Studios poached a lot of former Halo staffers for Metroid Prime 4, which definitely shows in the opening battlefield scene.
Afaik they only hired an artist from 343, who's now the Lead Character Artist for the game.
You guys might be intrigued/surprised to find that Mario & Luigi MIGHT be MonolithSoft.
@@E.B._Tech I don’t think Takahashi’s Xenoblade team would be doing M&L but that’d be funny lol
For a moment I was thinking Echos of Wisdom was gonna be a Pikmin/Little King Story sort of situation.
I wouldn’t call it the best in YEARS but considering this is most likely the last switch direct, it definitely ended with bangers
It had some good ones, overall this direct was mid especially compared to their last one. Not into JRPGs personally.
For a console in its last year this is a great direct lol.
@@LiamRoyson the last one was one of the worst honestly.
It was one of the best Directs ever, but not THE best in years.
Excellent convo hosting, Jon
I agree with Ash so much - No direct will be perfect until a new Rhythm Heaven. But I’ll give this one a 9.9/10. It’s been so long since the last direct that introduced multiple must-buys for me.
Bro a new Mario and Luigi was all I needed, the rest is just A LOT of icing on the cake 😂
I can own the Marvel VS games on a cart soon. As a 90s arcade kid, that's like a $300 game. As in one I'd buy a Switch for. I'm so excited for that release.
PS4 release too 😊
Gosh, I hope one day we get that HD 2D style for Pokemon remakes. That style looks like perfection.
Please no… it works for DQ because it’s retro. Gen V (the next in line) was already in 3d. Please don’t go back
DQ is my favorite series so seeing DQ III like that is a dream, I wish fans of other series could get something like it too for their favorite games, Pokemon Gen 2 or 3 in that style would be amazing.
@@SeveraLF I’d be down but not for a remake. Give us a new adventure in the same region (but they’re already doing that with the Legends series so idk)
@@56ty_ Pokemon BW were 3D environments with 2D sprites for all characters, just like the DQ3 remake.
Disney of all companies is being surprisingly decent at it. With all the recent Star Wars rereleases and the collections.
So hyped about the DQ remakes. I played the nes versions of 1-3 sequentially, so I guess now I get to do it chronologically to mix things up.
Cautiously optimistic about this new style of Zelda. Cant wait for DQ3!
I just hope Metroid Prime 2 & 3 come before Metroid Prime 4, I desperately want to play the whole saga.
Doubt it. Prime 1 is enough to get people up to speed- story's not that important
Echoes of Wisdom is Nintendo's 2D Minecraft: laying materials down/summoning elements and how it interacts with the world mechanic
It's like nintendo are actually listening. What a great generation to be a nintendo fan

13:10 ...absolutely... Mercury Steam did the same thing going from Samus Returns to Metroid Dread... although for Grezzo, Link's Awakening HD & Echoes of Wisdom are both made on Switch... compared to Samus Returns being a remake for the 3DS and Dread being a Switch game...
I loved it, too. For me the best was:
- A 2D Zelda game.
It was also nice to see Switch footage of Lego Horizon Adventures and it looks good. It’s still crazy that Aloy is on the Switch.
Prime 3 did also open mid-battle, which this opening very much resembles :)
Amazing Direct. The only thing missing for me was The Plucky Squire!
The less indie slop, the better
Going in order is better than going all over the place.
Actually, starting April this year, Switch is in its Eighth year, making this Direct even more impressive.
🤓
The connotation of “literally” has become a lot different, I think they know that. When a lot of people use the word now, it’s just used for dramatization, not for actually being “literal” about something
Best Direct since E3 2021. Both having a new Zelda, a new Mario Party, a new Metroid, other stuff I liked (M&L Brotherhood and Age of Calamity DLC respectively) and both hard carried by the fighting game-related news (MVC Collection and Kazuya in Smash)
Fantasian Neo Dimension is confirmed for Playstation, Xbox and Steam so it’s not even limited to Switch either. Great news!
Remember: Breath of the wild came out on both the wii u and the switch.
I can see metroid be a launch title for the switch 2.
What, you just found that now? And so was Twilight Princess.
Playable Zelda is a dream come true, and INVESTIGATIONS??? Never saw it coming
The opening of the MP4 trailer actually confirms that the game takes place AFTER Metroid 2, when the Metroids are dead. Somehow
.... but 4 appear with styliux?
All the Prime games including Hunters take place between Metroid 1 & 2, not sure where 4 fits in yet but likely after Prime 3
We have gotten all Mario RPGs this year, now we just need sticker star remake
We need a Mario RPG sequel, that is the next step.
I'm starting to think I maybe should pick up a Switch soon.
Wait for the price cut
My favorite series ever is dragon quest (and the erdrick trilogy is my favorite trilogy in gaming history)
My favorite Nintendo series is Metroid
My personal wish going in was ace attorney investigations
I got all that on top of a new quirky 2d Zelda game, fantasian, the NSO drops, SaGa, and one of my favorite donkey kongs?
Probably my favorite direct ever personally
The 2D timeline would fall under the fallen hero timeline
Imho, I would like this to be the last Prime timeline game but then have new Prime style games set after Dread
With the exception of xenoblade!

There is a limit to the spamming
I see the Metroid timeline like this: the first game is canon either way, then it splits and becomes two different stories between the Prime series and the other”regular” series.
Otherwise, how much does she have time to do between Metroid 1 and 2? It made sense when it was just one game, but now there’s like six of them.
there's an official timeline. the prime series takes place between Metroid 1 and 2.
@@jenerossitea9247 I know, I’m just saying it’s getting a bit ridiculous with how many games they’ve cramming in between those two. It’s not like they had all these games in the series planned back in the early 2000’s.
I have never enjoyed a direct more since the Wii U 2013 direct
I’m sorry, but if you seriously think you need to confront your enemies head on to be a “bad ass”, you need your head checked and priorities sorted out. Zelda’s way, making use of her intellect and wisdom in the new game, is more than bad ass enough. She doesn’t need to be a traditional fighter to be strong.
It’s as good as saying all stay home mothers/homemakers are not as “independent or strong” as their working counter parts.
It‘s the cursed thinking a lot of people have nowadays where they think a good female character is only one fights tough and acts like a badass.
As if the world had only that one type of females. Tough women come in all different forms, you don‘t have to be a fighter to be considered a strong woman.
At the begging when luigi was getting chased by bees i thought it was going to be a mario x lethal company cross over on switch

One of the better Directs ever, and I didn't record my reaction! Just my luck...
I think the best direct was the one that revealed Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door. This one was good but I don't think it's as good as that one was.
I have the exact same shirt Daniel’s wearing, it’s a fire Yetee shirt
It was a more noteworthy Direct than I expected; an original Mario and Luigi when a remake was predicted was certainly something else!
DKC Returns, Mio, Stray, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Dragon Quest 3 (which I didn't realise was the first for the trilogy chronologically), Ace Attorney were all great announcements for me...
Oh, and Prime 4 was there too I guess
@39:49 those 2 metroid they showed in Metroid 4 is actually Mochtroid and not metroids.
I'm excited for fairy tail 2 marvel vs Capcom and others
what does it mean that the best Nintendo direct comes at the end of the system's lifecycle? Are we actually not that excited about new hardware, and companies actually produce their best material when they're in a low-stakes mode while presumably better stuff is being "saved" for the successor? They don't need to impress, just keep us interested in the brands, and the freedom to create in that environment is actually the secret to better games?
Little surprised you're all excited about the BotW style exploration in a 2D Zelda, I'm not sure why I am though. I hope after this they do a more traditional one.
"I think this is what everyone wanted"
I don't think it's what I wanted, unfortunately, especially from a Zelda player character
The next 2D game will have Link and Zelda playable at the same time.

I have a question/theory for any one of y’all at gvg. Do y’all think switch 2 first 2 years will have GameCube and 3ds hd/4k remasters?
Punisher is an incredible game
I dunno, with the crazy amount of hiring Nintendo's been doing lately, do we know that they haven't just fully absorbed Alpha Dream's former employees?

I can honestly say that this direct cleared my low expectations, and I mean that was zero sarcasm involved.
I may not have gotten a poor / sequel / remake of kid Icarus uprising, the Mario and Luigi brothers ship more than makes up for that 💯
1. the first entirely new 2D _Zelda_ game in over a decade: _amazing._
2. Zelda herself is the protagonist; cool, I guess… I’m not sure how I feel about the “echo” mechanic… it looks like it could get tedious, especially the UI, like scrolling forever to find the specific object you want… hope not. and I _do_ hope Link shows back up at some point in the game, or Zelda just gets a sword 🤷🏻♂️
3. it’s the same art style as the _Link’s Awakening_ remake: ehh… I didn’t really like it then, and it looks only mildly better now… it’s just too shiny. the world looks less rigid, though, and Zelda’s movement looks better than Link’s, like they added transition frames when changing direction, etc 👍
4. still no _Wind Waker_ and _Twilight Princess_ on Switch: _excruciating._
This mirrors my thoughts on it. Still interested, but I'm not quite sold on the mechanic. I'm left worried that it's going to feel half baked. The art style is eh. I could take it or leave it.
I still want WW and TP on Switch. Please. Those are my favorite Zeldas.
