Top Dressing your Grass Seed with Peat Moss

  • Applying 1/4in peat moss over your grass seed ensures the seed stays moist and germinates quicker. Many have seen higher germination rates when using peat moss. You should use about 1-2 bales of peat moss per 1000 square feet. I spread it around with this rake and it worked great, but others use compost spreaders aka peat moss spreaders.
    I used The Groundskeeper II, you can find it here:

      Too cute - your youngest child coming out to watch daddy working, then wandering around like some peat handed godzilla! When my kids watch me, their daddy, i'm mostly saying, "bloody hell" far too much. I have bare earth I cut and am about to topsoil and sow my first grass. Cheers from Oxford, UK!

    That different bale of peat moss probably occurred when in the extraction process at the peat farm, they hit a vein of perhaps clay or just part of the topsoil if as you say, it was a little harder and had clumps mixed in. Your outcome should be no different. Great prep job as you got the kids to tamp it in for you.

    Just my own experience; but I found that grass seed needs very little to almost zero dirt/peat over it. I have done the coverage thing and found that the seed did not come up. There is another youtube video that says that grass seed has very little energy in the seed itself and can not push through much topsoil/peat. It can germinate and die without breaking the surface of the dirt... But, I am not an expert...

    I would like to say I'm enjoying this lawn series very much! It's so fun to see all this hard work come to a beautiful lawn. If I must say, I do have maybe one tip for you not trying to bash you or anything but I feel like all those wired grasses and weeds growing is from excess water. If I remember in the comments from a previous video you said you would water 5 times a day 10 minutes a day but you said your sprinkler put out an inch in an hour. So over the course of the day you watering basically an inch of water a day which is way to much for seed. It's even bad if it's established as well as over the course of the few weeks would drown the roots. In my opinion and from what I read watched grass seeds need to be just moist which means lightly water 2 times a day, 3 max. Maybe if you cut some water out the grass seeds could germinate quicker and you will save lots of water.

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  8 років тому

      It's actually clover :( I didn't get it fully killed before the reno. Thankfully the mesotrione in the starter fert is turning it white. As for watering, I'm monitoring it throughout the day.. On hot sunny days the light sprays help but with the overcast rainy days I've had to turn it off.

  • @barneybremhorst7175

    a couple things i do know about peat moss is 1. Its a now renewable resource, once they have harvested all the peat bogs, thats it no more. 2. it becomes hydrophobic if allowed to dry out, anybody that has used a peat based potting soil can attest to that. If you water a really dry peat potting soil it runs off the top and down the cracks.3. its acidic, it will move your ph in high enough quantities. that is all for now

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  8 років тому

      I've read that some peat moss is renewable and some isn't. I'm not sure either way but I don't have a problem using it. It does get hydrophobic but it's important to keep the soil moist while seeding. When the peat turns a different color it's easy to see you aren't watering enough ;-)

    Kids had a blast getting dirty. That is awesome. Did you put the seed down before putting down peat moss or did you spread peat moss and then spread seed?

      Peat moss on top of the seed. I've got all the steps I took in this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLXlWmhRBoMXh6R7rFF3VoHLiObVTmaUxT.html

    Did you aerate and overseed?, or did you just lay the seed over the dead grass..then peat moss?

      Nathan McLaughlin put the seed down, rolled, and peat moss. If you click the renovation playlist in the description it shows all the steps I took and the order ;)

      Barry Levy they have a moss control product you can spray or granules that you can spread over the area. But it may come back due to the area you're trying to control staying wet from lack of sunlight, compacted soil, or poor PH level.

    How large was your bales of peat moss? The ones around here are 3 cu. Each one would cover 144 square feet at 1/4 inch.

    the 2 different bags of peat moss must have been from a different batch, probably older stock...id numbers likely be printed on bag itself.

    I love seeing the kids romping around. The peat moss will keep them moist. Ha ha. You said you have grass seed down? I don't understand what all the light brown is. Is that the color of your soil? BTW, if that's a Greenskeeper rake it is absolutely a superb dethatching rake. There are videos on using it. I use it all the time, and it does require some muscle or it gets caught, but wow does it work clearing thatch! If you have seed down and are applying peat moss over it there are other opinions that peat moss should not be put on grass seed which you have to constantly keep moist until it germinates, because it actually draws water away from the seeds, and by the time you see the peat moss is dry, the seeds have already been dry sooner than that. If you use water smart (the blue coated seeds), you don't need peat moss. Having said that, I use a very light covering only to keep the seeds in place and on the other hand, the birds away if I don't use coated seeds. Thank you for your videos.

    Great video. I put pete moss down a few days ago. Can you put more pete moss down if the birds start attacking the seed? I didnt use as much as you did.
