The people who invented the 'soil leveler' should get a Nobel Prize:)...I an going to definitely get one of these when I aerate my lawn early this Fall.
This is the best detailed info I have seen on this subject. I have washed sand to be delivered in a couple of days. My lawn has brown patch so I want to avoid feeding it nitrogen via any fertiliser.
Great idea to use triple screened top soil. Nothing worse that having to remove twigs and sticks and junk from your grass after top dressing. Thanks for sharing.
A very informative video particularly mentioning the fact that we shouldn't add too much top dressing covering the grass blades makes good sense. A note here, the background music is really killing my ear drums while focusing to find your voice among the "noise". Would be nice it the loud music background can be removed or softens up. Thank you.
Hi, yes in Australia our spring starts in September and runs through to November. But it is warm enough usually by August. Obviously if you live in the Northern Hemisphere your spring months will differ, but the concept is still the same.
Thanks for mentioning, I had to think about those months. At the rate the weather is changing in Arkansas, USA ,spring might as well be in September through December
FYI. the topsoil leveler in Australia is called a gravel/easy spreader in the US. A Powder coated one for heavy applications and a light aluminum one for light surface grading is available. For lawns I recommend the powder coated one as it is heavier.
Hi! My Lawn is not even is has a bump and then goes down. I watched your videos and brought sand. All I need to do is rake the sand evenly for the lawn to grow highly and evenly????
A great video, and that top dressing was quality! Before I did mine similar to that, I found it was quite important to air the lawn first with a core aerate tool, or similar to open up compaction to let the lawn breathe, even perhaps scarifying depending if theres thatch around.. Also I used a bit of sharp sand in my top dressing which went down well (literally) benefiting the lawn. Cheers guys.
so top dress in early spring? what about before fall time? to possibly winterize the lawn? I live in AZ. very dry atmosphere at 7,000 ft. nit terribly hot. my soil is clay-ish under the turf we put in 4 years ago.
If I have some dips in my yard. Like rolling hills if you will. Can I just fill six inches (or whatever it is) of top soil to bring the dip up to level and just plant seed in those spots? Thank you for any help!
I love this video. It's a mash of good tips and demonstration, plus decent production that also cocks up up 4:54 - someone had the mic on under instruction in post. Lol. :)
I have a patchy lawn. I just layed down top dressing with built in fertilizer. Do I need grass seeds, or would the top dressing help the patches to grow grass? Cheers. I am loacted in NSW.
Trev is thinking " yeah you just stand there , I'll do all the hard working filling and pushing the barrow, you just do the talking , I don't want you to get your nice trousers dirty"
What Top Dressing do if dont add grass seed. Just get lumps out? I first use a 40-in Spike Lawn Aerator design drops seed, fertilizer or lime $199.00 new at lows put some fertlizer down will give grass roots some food after may top dress.
Near beginning of video, you said best time is "in the Spring", but then you said "August, September, October, November". I don't understand. Are those months your Spring?
Absolutely if the lawn has a thatch problem to begin with. If you have reticulation, do a complete system check and when it is at its optimum lay down a soil wetter/surfactant. Next hand pull all of the weeds (especially the roots) you can then hit with a selective herbicide and a preemergent herbicide to stop the next generation of weeds from starting. You will need to reapply several times over the next few seasons on a 8-10 week schedule to get the warm and cold season weeds when they are germinating. They can lay dormant for a long time but to the herbacides won't work until they start growing. Next, a dethatch/scarify, then aerate, then more soil wetter, then fertaliser, then top dress and level. The first few weeks will see the lawn grow like never before and soon enough with regular maintainence, regular fertaliser and deep soaking watering to promote strong roots your lawn will be the healthiest it has ever been.
I used a doorstep grille instead of a trulute (lawn leveller). did the same job, though a it more tricky to manipulate. My self-sourced CH4N2O probably isn't as good as that C88 fertiliser but it's free.
I found it beneficial, on a hot day, to use that silly plastic, or metal fan sprinkler end, or gun, and act like I am painting the lawn. Start at one end, and spray like i am spray painting the lawn, and through flow dynamics, the soil goes from high to low, and even itself out. I do not worry how much or how even my watering is at this point, I just want it all wet. The next three days, I am there eyeballing the green grass to make sure I am wet enough all over. If it wet, or got flooded, I avoid that area, and you will know.
it's the first time I hear Spring being called like August, September, etc in an English speaking country... Stopped the video to check if it was from the southern hemisphere and yes, it was!
Ofcoarse it does. Your obviously an amateur when it comes to advanced lawn care. I play music for my grass for atleast 3 hours a day, especially in early spring when the lawn is lethargic. Also, speaking to my grass in a Australian accent makes it thick & hardy.
Thank you so much for this!!! I tried some of these tips myself and am a noob at lawn care but love learning about how to improve it so that my neighbours get lawn envy (which I currently have!) I've started my own UA-cam channel to document my progress. Feel free to see and comment on how I'm going :)
Why should I mow the lawn before applying the top dressing. I have 4cm depressions, if I dont cut the grass the grass blades will still stick out which is good no?
you lost me at "FILTER/SIFT THE DIRT". Nobody is going to do that. Also, at about 4:56 I don't know why, but the background music volume gets loud enough that OI cant hear what you're saying... 😕😕😕
You have got to watch this video with subtitles (closed captions). The presenters accent is amazing but the translation on the subtitles is hilarious. Lol.
Centenary Landscaping Supplies Do you recommend a lawn roller (barrel filled with water) ? My lawn is large and very bumpy from freezing and melting up here in Northern USA. Thanks
Buy composted manure in bags at a big box home store or locate a mulch/materials yard which sells black dirt to landscapers. 1/2 cubic yard of material will fit in an American pick-up truck bed. No truck? Buy only 4 bags of material each time you go to the home store and put them on a tarp in your vehicle. The stores will make delivery for a fee, but that will increase the cost and you could hire a landscaper for the same amount to do the job. The video is correct about screening the material, including the bagged stuff. There will be rock and debris. I do 2 screenings of the material, first using a 1/2" trommel and then the 2nd using a wooden frame with 1/4" hardware cloth attached to the frame. Keep in mind these guys are in AUS and are top dressing warm season turf, probably Zoysia grass. In Chicago, you probably don't have Zoysia. You probably have a cool season turf. You can top dress cool season turf any time it is actively growing, just don't cover it too deep. Low areas in the turf may take several applications to avoid smothering the grass with soil.
For North American residents looking for a soil leveller, perhaps try mkrittenhouse.com/ca/gravel-leveler-easy-spreader & mkrittenhouse.com/us/gravel-leveler-easy-spreader. Not certain on their shipping terms, but this is a little closer to home!
It would help if you lose the music, which gets turned up so loud that I can't hear the commentary. I'm not so stupid that I need music to enable my comprehension.
This is an excellent video. Short and right to the point. The key is using a high quality soul and spreading it properly.

yes you have to wear dress shoes when you do this and where long pants even thoe its over 100 degrees out
If you have any bald areas on your lawn, do you ever add seed to the topsoil while you are doing this process? Thanks
How many likes can we get for old mate Trev? All he cares about is getting the job done so he can head home and crack an ice cold VB.
Well done guys.... helped me a lot with my topdressing plan. Thanks!
In the spring...August, September, October and early November. That's if you live south of the equator. This landscaper is from Australia.
He is South African
I think he is Welsh!
@@richardbird6945 all the phone numbers and addresses advertised in the video are Australian, the original post is correct.
@@NP-ux9xg OK, he is a South African living in Australia. LOL
That's not a South African accent. Definitely Welsh.

I did top the lawn and re seeded - now the grass is one inch out. Do I use fertilizer to feed a boost ?
Northern Hemreare Guy here, Would it be better to do this in March until May? I feel its too early to do it your all's spring.
Can you make the soil lot deeper to Bury the grass then just throw grass seeds on top? My bumps in garden really uneven
It is very good video, easy to understand as it is explained steps by steps so it is good for beginner. Thank you very much.
Is earthing up soil and top dressing same thing
What happened with the audio at 5:04, I hear a faint yep in the music and the presenter goes completely mute .
GREAT video & advice delivered clearly! Thank you VERY much!

Great video . Can not find a bag of eco 88 in NSW . Can you help please ?
Man , your spring starts at August and September 😂😂😂
Nice use of the indigenous workmen !!!!!
3:30 Didn't they have peat moss rollers 10 years ago? Save a ton of time an effort.
If I just had a tree stump removed, what can I use to fill it in after removing the grindings🤷♂️
Trev is rocking those shorts
Can I top dress my new sod I believe I don’t have enough top soil under it so I’m worried it won’t have enough top soil..

Nice job on the play by play narrating and supervising.
Hey! You didn’t put any grass seed in there?
Can you do St. Augustine grass like this.

Excellent advice well done and good simple method to follow - well done guys
Shit can the background music when the guy is talking. Sometimes it gets too loud.
Couldn't you use a spreader and save a lot of time doing this?

Question: should you de-thatch your lawn first before top dressing?
