It should be noted that it wasn't THIS film that inspired Star Wars but the old Flash Gordon movie serials from the 1930s. And the serials were inspired by the Flash Gordon comic strips.
The Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers Movie Serials from the 1930's and 1940's were George Lucas' inspiration, this movie was released 3 years after the first Star Wars and pre-dated the Ewoks by 3 years. Prince Baron would later play James Bond. You should check out Flesh Gordon for the sexy, humorous take on this, the penisaur is hilarious.
Zarkhov's assistant is character actor William Hootkins who was also: Jek Porkins in Star Wars, Lt Eckhardt in Batman 89, and one of the government wonks in Raiders of the Lost Ark ("TOP men!")
The Queen soundtrack was awesome. I ran around singing that song when this movie came out. I watched this movie over and over again when it was released. Still enjoy it to this day.
I think you might know the band who did the score - in fact I'm surprised you didn't recognize the voice - in fact it's probably why you were getting the copyright hits.
Grew up with this movie, and as big a Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, and lord of the rings fan as I am, I have to admit, Flash 1980 may be one of my favorite movies of all time, at least my favorite guilt pleasure. The soundtrack and main song and the Ajax battle may be some of my movie song and battle of all time as well! Got to meet and get a photo with Sam Jones two years ago at a convention and sit in on his Q&A. Wasn’t disappointed in the slightest.
Great reaction. This movie had that Dino De Laurentiis space opera fantasy flair…Barbarella, Flash Gordon, Dune (original) colorful campy classic films
Yeaa, I like THIS flick. i like the musical score, the imagery, the look, the irreverent humor ("camp" it's called). It's got a lot of STYLE! No, there wasn't another Flash flick (wish I could say otherwise).
If you look closely after the credits when the hot hail is coming down at the airfield, there is a guy looking out of a window of one of the buildings and then closes the door of the airplane before take-off... it's Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid from Harry Potter)!
Thanks, Will! ⚡ I saw this in the cinema and numerous times on home video. I think it's so much fun... lavish design and a great soundtrack, of course.
Oh by the way, this way before match the universe, he-man and the TV series so wait before ski tour. Also the Ramada guy is Timothy Dalton. He played James Bond in a couple movies. He’s also the bad guy in the Rocketeer. Great actor. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I did too. That’s all for now.
@@WillTalksMovies The best way to check it out is at a midnight showing. It is a group participation film that does not come across as well with a solo viewing.
George Lucas originally wanted to film a version of Flash Gordon but couldn't get the rights to it, so he revamped it into Star Wars. After the success of Star Wars, Dino De Laurentis was able to obtain the rights to Flash Gordon and made this film. It's campy and cheesy, but its my favorite film of all time. The casting is also really well done, the main characters very closely resemble their counterparts in the old black and white serials with Buster Crabbe.
Possibly the single campiest movie ever. And that's what makes it so fun. I wouldn't have it any other way. By the way, Prince Barin (the suave Robin Hood guy) was played by Timothy Dalton, who later went on to play James Bond.
Excellent reaction. Yes it was a great movie. People didn’t like it at first in the theaters though. Didn’t go over well for some reason but since the movie come out, it’s the DVD sales and sales went through the roof. It’s a cold classic now. People love it, but there’s a big story about it. The guy who played flash I never done any acting before was his first big job. His agent wanted him to have more money because they plan to do three movies of this show. It was supposed to be so big. The budget was massive so his agent said you know they went home for Christmas Back to America. The film was filmed in Europe somewhere and he said don’t come back until I give you more money, trust me, it’ll work. They need you. The film is halfway finished. They won’t. They can’t do without you. So being a new actor. He went with his agent. Surprise surprise. The director said the heck with you. He got some model and dubbed his voice for the rest of the movie. That’s why when you go to Avoria, when flashed in the cage, his voice changes totally different guy for the second half of the film they made up since then he apologized to the director. Everybody felt bad for the actor, but that’s what you do. He never acted again. Actually he’s a bodyguard now although he was in the movie. Ted ones because the kid who’s Mark Wahlberg is, it was a big fan of Flash Gordon so they brought the guy who played Flash Gordon the first guy into the movie to play Flash Gordon for his party And he does convention over the years. This came out before and strikes back so this is before Yoda before Deba and wait before the E walks now. Of course George would never admit. He took any ideas from this movie even though he originally wanted to do a Flash Gordon movie but he couldn’t get the rights because this guy Stephen Solheim, the guy who made Superman the movie and Superman two the producer, and masters of the universe actually later that’s the level he made. He lost his shirt after that, cause they borrow money from the wrong people had already bought the right to the movie Before George Lucas good. That’s why he had to make Star Wars instead. I think it all worked out for the best although I think they could’ve done a flash sequel easily some people laugh at it. They say it’s not good but most of us agree. It’s a good movie. Thanks for the fun Until next time.
And it was because George Lucas was suing people for making sci-fi shows that were too close to Star Wars, this movie got green lit because it's a property older than Star Wars... Therefore it has some resistance to being sued for being a rip-off of Star Wars.
Now you understand why Flash Gordon is such a loved movie! We got Star Wars because George Lucas wasn't able to get the rights to Make a Flash Gordon film! A Win/Win situation for everyone that LOVES great movies!
NO, NO, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! George Lucas didn't take inspiration from THIS - if anything THIS took inspiration from Star Wars (as well as the source material). Flash Gordon was a comic strip originally created and drawn by Alex Raymond and first published in 1934 (4 years before Superman's first appearance in Action Comics). It was intended as competition for another space faring comic strip, Buck Rogers. Flash was featured in 3 serial movies Flash Gordon (1936), Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars (1938), and Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe (1940) - Buck Rogers only had one serial Buck Rogers (1939) - all 4 films starred the same actor - Buster Crabbe. The serials and comic strip are what inspired George Lucas.
Cheesy campy fun! Proof that is it is worth doing, its worth overdoing! Queen did the sound track, I think mostly Brian May. The Title track was released ahead of the film and was a sizable hit here in the UK generating a lot of interest in the films release. I think It did OK here in the UK but kind of flopped everywhere else. Its fortunes were saved like a lot of flops, through VHS rentals. Thinking about it, on every level, this should have failed, it has all the wrong ingredients in all the wrong amounts, a garish throw back in the era of post star wars sci-fi with its used universes and ground in reality tech looks, yet somehow, it came across as charming and fun. It is a good (fun and enjoyable) bad movie. The original Buster Crabb serials were made to be shown in Cinemas as multi part stories with cliffhangers, yet, became a staple of early TV. Through this they inspired Star Wars (along with the John Carter books, Dune and others). George Lucas lost out on the rights for this and Buck Rodgers, but both were stuck in pre production hell (Glen Larson would wind up with those), so he wrote his own.
_Concerning the thumbnail..._ Yes, I´ve seen this purposely egregious cinematic vomitus, but I don´t remember seeing within it the one shown in the middle, presumably being a member of the fish species from planet _MeMeMe..._
Terrible acting, inane writing, epically cheesy visual effects, sets, costumes and completely over-the-top. The only real reason I re-watch is to see others discover how wonderfully terrible it is. Oh, and it has an epic theme song and score written and performed by Queen! Yeah, THAT's why I re-watch.
It should be noted that it wasn't THIS film that inspired Star Wars but the old Flash Gordon movie serials from the 1930s. And the serials were inspired by the Flash Gordon comic strips.
Thank you! I was waiting for this comment
Flash started off a comic strip in 1934. There was also a short lived TV show in 2007 on America's SyFy channel. The soundtrack in all Queen.

Whips, fetish gear, masks. An insane space opera of the utmost high campery. And Brian Blessed type cast yet again!
This was the time that Queen was going through a Soundtrack phase, such as this, and Highlander.
I am so honored and fortunate to have seen this in the theater. It was truly epic. 👍👊💪
Queen's theme music to this movie is just so iconic, but it must make it absolute hell trying to get a reaction to it onto UA-cam.
A naked Flash Gordon you ask? Ironic. Sam was a nude model in Playgirl magazine before he starred in this movie.
I think you might know the band who did the score - in fact I'm surprised you didn't recognize the voice - in fact it's probably why you were getting the copyright hits.

Nice sounds an amazing experience
7:30 There he is! The Exorcist!
In the original series (or serial), Prince Vultan was played by actor Jack Lipson. Like Brian Blessed, Jack’s Prince Vultan always laughed too!
Great reaction. This movie had that Dino De Laurentiis space opera fantasy flair…Barbarella, Flash Gordon, Dune (original) colorful campy classic films
"That Robin Hood guy . . . "
Well, it wasn't Robin Hood but Timothy Dalton did play what was, in my opinion, the best version of another British hero.

All those drawings in the opening credits were Alex Raymond's artwork.
Richard O'Brian (Rocky Horror Picture Show) is also in this movie.
Is that something I should check out?

George Lucas was inspired by the original Flash Gordon serials of the 1930s, not this...spectacle.
👍What he said was "messed up".👍

i am sure someone will tell you the musical score was by the band Queen. look it up you will not be discapointed
The only thing I new about this film
@@WillTalksMovies did you know the band Toto did the music for the Dino De Lorentis Dune film? i liked both the movie and the soundtrack
It wasn't a bad movie. Just kinda "meh". I did like Dale and Aura. 🔥
