    There are things about the 2005 version that I like but this is by far the better of the two. It also doesn't come with that 2000s post-9/11 baggage.

    So, the whole point of this movie is it's a satirical take on a fascist, militaristic society. Towards the beginning of the movie they're learning about "the failure of democracy" and we're told that only people with military service are considered full citizens, with the right to have children and vote(after they've been thoroughly brainwashed by the military machine). Their citizens are constantly inundated with military propaganda and executions of alleged criminals are televised after what are almost certainly show trials designed to produce the desired outcome(guilty). All the main characters of this movie start out as fresh-faced kids with hopes and dreams, and by the end, they're all screaming fascist monsters preparing the next generation to die for the state. These characters are not heroic, and their stories are not meant to be inspiring. Underneath all that over-the-top violence and soap opera drama, this movie is meant to be chilling. I mean, the military recruiter guy with no legs at the beginning literally says to Rico, "more meat for the grinder". Because that's all they are. Meat for the machine. And Neil Patrick Harris is literally dressed like a nazi!. It's not subtle at all. This movie may seem fun on the surface, but it's a warning, to all of us.

    16:01 thats the point. The original book was a criticism on British imperialism by saying, "we do the same thing. You can’t condemn the martians for doing what our own race have been doing for millennia. The martians are no more evil than we are." And of course the martian ran. Mars has a lot less light than earth, it's eye was not used to the light of the torch, and it hurt. On top of thst it had just had a brick thrown at it, it was in pain and disoriented

    Verhoeven made one of the best movies (Soldier of Orange 1977) and one of the worst movies (Showgirls 1995) ever. But Robocop and Total Recall are right in line with Starship Troopers as just good sci-fi fun.

    Welcome to the world of Paul Verhoeven movies. He likes to use over the top satire to make his point. Such as the use of propaganda and a military fascist government in Starship Troopers. Of the incredibly corrupt corporation and their takeover of law enforcement with military tech in "Robocop". Now you just have to watch "Total Recall" to have seen my top three Paul Verhoeven movies.

Even if you put aside the fact that Bruce was a tween when his parents were murdered, Batman DOESN'T KILL. Yes, it's just you thinking it!!!!! LET IT GO!!!!!! Why is he only concerned about his sheets? Lucky you, no drug addict friends in your life - priorities tend to be out of order for such folk. He was tall(6'4") his distinctive features voice and accent made him perfect for the role. He also played a very convincing Apostle Peter in the movie The Robe also staring richard burton and victor mature. He was perfect for both roles and was great in them

    The Martians are coming! The Martians are coming! Orson Welles provides the narration and his influence is all over this film in subtle ways. Gene Barry does a great Orson Welles impersonation during the radio interview minutes before all hell breaks loose. The scene where the machines emerge from the crater as a group is iconic, second only to the scene later in the film when the Martians tear apart the city while the survivors gather in church. The first full scale thermonuclear weapon, which back then was called the hydrogen bomb, was detonated over the Enewetak Atoll in the South Pacific in late 1952. It generated a 10 megaton explosive yield that was over 450 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Nagasaki during World War II. The Soviet Union first tested theirs in 1953. The subtext to this version of War of the Worlds is the Cold War that was developing between the United States and the Soviet Union. For a taste of where that went also check out the 1964 Stanley Kubrick political satire black comedy film Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

    I am surprised you didn't know how the movie would end even though you didn't see it. This was written by H.G. Welles. in the late 1800's and is well known. A radio version of this was broadcast in the late 1930's as a news program and people who tuned in without knowing that the "news" was really a fictional story thought it was real. I was born in 1950 and we were taught this in school. When I saw this movie in TV, I already knew how it ends. Welles also wrote The Time Machine and many other famous stories. What are they teaching in literature class these days?

    • @mikecaetano
      @mikecaetano 7 днів тому

      I was born in the late sixties and I can tell you the story was still told in high school and college in the eighties. Grovers Mill was under attack!!! Otherwise, I have no idea what goes down these days in literature classes. I'm guessing the story is considered quaint and is passed over for something more recent or something more older. The Time Machine -- with Rod Taylor. Classic steam punk.

    professor barnhardt was played by a blacklisted actor named sam jaffe. he also appeared in 1947's "gentleman's agreement" an EXCELLENT social commentary film starring gregory peck. and he played the title character, an indian, in 1939's action/adventure "gunga din" which starred cary grant and douglas fairbanks jr. based on the rudyard kipling poem. he was mainly a well known stage actor who, in his later career, appeared almost exclusively in tv shows as a guest star. he was nominated for a suporting role oscar for "the day the earth stood still." thanks for the video.

    Gort was played by Lock Martin who at the time was a doorman at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. He was chosen for the part because of his towering 7'4'' (224cm) height. Michael Rennie was cast as Klaatu because being British he was unknown at the time to American audiences. The studio wanted Spencer Tracy for the role but he was considered too well known to play a visiting alien.

    As a child of the 1950s who was born and raised in the Midwest, I can tell you that Square Dancing was a known thing back then. As one of Heinlein's characters in one of his juvenile novels pointed out ""Square Dancing" was when squares dance.
