    Here is what you'll need!
    HOMEMADE SOFT PRETZELS
    Servings: 8
    INGREDIENTS
    1½ cups warm water
    1 tablespoon salt
    1 tablespoon sugar
    1 packet dry active yeast
    4½ cups flour
    3 tablespoons oil, divided
    ⅔ cup baking soda
    2 eggs, beaten
    Coarse salt
    PREPARATION
    1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
    2. In a bowl, mix water, salt, and sugar until combined. Add yeast, and let rest 5 minutes until yeast starts to foam.
    3. Add flour and 2 tablespoons of oil, and mix thoroughly until a dough forms. Remove the dough and use the remaining oil to cover the bowl.
    4. Cover bowl with plastic wrap, and leave in a warm place for 1 hour.
    5. Cut dough into 8 pieces and roll them out into thin ropes, twisting the two ends to form a pretzel shape.
    6. Add baking soda to a large pot of water, and bring to a rolling 7. boil. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds per side.
    8. Transfer pretzels to a baking sheet, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with salt. Bake for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown.
    9. Enjoy!

So if anyone is actually interested in the recipe itself some suggestions based on the tasty website for this recipe...
Use brown sugar instead of white granulated sugar and swap the oil for some melted and cooled unsalted butter instead. And 4 cups of flour is enough dont really need the extra 1/2 cup.
I dont mix my yeast and salt together so i proofed my yeast in the water and brown sugar solution only. I added the salt to the flour and then added the yeast+butter to the flour once the yeast had bloomed.
Only use 1/3 cup of baking soda for the water so they dont have a weird aftertaste.
Also dont go heavy handed on the salt for the topping since these have a good amount of salt in them already. If you can find pretzel salt thats great but sea/kosher salt work great too.
If you are worried about sticking then grease you sheet tray with some butter/oil to help.
With these little improvements these are great pretzels. Better when dipped in mustard/honey mustard!
I made a half recipe only making 4 good sized pretzals so if you dont need 8 the recipe will still work.

Thanks for the adjustments!I started out making the tasty recipe but my yeast (thinking bc of the salt) didn't activate well so I did the tasty recipe as is and your recipe exactly and yours came out waaaay better.
The tasty recipe did have too much flour causing the dough to be tough and made the final result edible just more dense.

Just dont make the mistake i have made, assuming you need to add triple amount of baking soda for triple amount of water. I did that and mine turned so bitter, they are unedible😢 If you need more water just add more water and dont add more soda.

I made these and they turned out really well!
    Tips:
    - Use bread flour if you want the pretzels to be soft and all purpose flour if you want them to be crunchier/harder
    - Use a large pot for the water bath so the baking soda doesn't bubble out when you put it in
    - Brush with melted butter after you bake them while they're steaming. They'll be even more yummy!

Recipe adjustment!!! Spray wax paper with cooking spray!! I ended up having the first batch stick. Loosing part of the pretzel to paper wasn't fun.. (I don't make food from recipes much so maybe it's suppose to be obvious?) And you only need ONE egg for the Egg wash... It seemed a bit much so I decided to do one egg at a time and I only ended up using half of a small one.

It may be cute to you, but heres how it annoys us:
.tasty rarely reads comments, so they think their viewers are people who actually wanna know how to make this sutff, which is usually older people, who like kids, which would bring more views. (They're using the kid for views and views = money)
.they always have him do some ugly dance while eating, which adds time, giving them more money
.they make him mess up and have to get help from the adult too much, which not only adds time, but brings even more viewers because its 'cute'
.and finally hes shown too much. It was cool to have a little kid at first but now its annoying

You can make these into buns too, not just the regular sized pretzels! Use them as burger buns, steak buns, or for other meat sandwiches. I tried it. All you have to do is follow the recipe for the dough, let it rise, make as many balls as you want, roll them up tight, and either let them rise again, or you can place them on your baking sheet, egg wash, cut a slit both diagonal, and then bake! You can add salt too if you want. I just left mine plain after boiling them.

I am really confused right now... Why are people upset over a little kid? It's part of the "Oh yes!" series; The Tasty recipes for kids. What's wrong with him/her being in a few shots of the video? Or even the end of the video where the kid shows they enjoy the recipe so others try it with their kid?

    • @helenjimin5922
      @helenjimin5922 6 років тому +34

Isabella Rose exactly, these have nothing better to do then complain about a kid being in a video. like he's just a kid. if you're annoyed then don't watch the video

    • @brittneysmith3065
      @brittneysmith3065 6 років тому +1

You don't even know the kid is at the end of the video because it's a normal video until he starts dancing at the end. The kid should be outside instead of dancing at the end of videos for views.

If you are confused in the baking soda + water step here is some information...
The baking soda is what gives the pretzels their brown and shiny crust and their distinctive flavor. ... And when this happens, the browning reactions that makes a soft pretzel a soft pretzel can happen more rapidly. So yes, you can skip the “boiling in water + baking soda” step. But don’t use baking powder as baking powder creates carbon dioxide bubble

Why the heck is everyone hating on this poor kid? It's just a kid that's trying to help out in the kitchen, he's in a video, he's NOT going to jump out and try to bite you!

I honestly don't understand why everyone is so upset over the kid. Everyone was a kid. At one time or another, we've probably wanted to go cook or help out. He's just doing his job, and if you don't like that he's here, Buzzfeed would probably appreciate *feedback* rather than hate. And if you don't want to give feedback, we'll gladly escort you out of the comment section. :)

Excellent video, I was looking for a simple and short video with the recipe and video demonstration. The little boy helping was great. Kids should learn how to cook, and parents should teach them. Teaching kids to be self sufficient is the best lesson parents can give.

Ok IDK WHAT KID! EVERYONE! IS TALKING ABOUT!!! BUT!! I made this with a friend- and the inside tasted great!! But 30 seconds a side was WAY too much. One of my friends who make these regularly makes these suggests 15 seconds TOPS in the bath TOTAL. The insides however- tasted great! But the outside tasted like straight baking soda.

Roots Cooking yea cooking with pre teens and teens definately helps. It make prep work and cook time go by quicker cause they can handle knives and use the stove/oven properly. For the little ones it helps cause they learn in a safe environment and you dont have to worry about them getting hurt in the kitchen☺ I notice it builds a family connection even if its making something simple like cookies.
