Ableton 12 is here! And WOW it was worth the wait. SO many cool new features.
I've tried to put together the most simple Ableton 12 tutorial that has everything you need, with nothing unnecessary.
I'm honored to teach you guys the ins and outs of this powerful software and give you the chance to get what's in your head to come out of a pair of speakers.
If you have any comments or questions let me know below!
I tried to read all the comments and respond when I can.
Thanks so much for stopping by, truly.
Cheers!
Ethan
Haven't touched a DAW in 9 years and today just felt like downloading the Ableton 12 trial. Thank you for this intro, this takes tons of guesswork out of beginning stages!
Switching over from FLStudio right now after about 4 years of "mastering" that DAW. And I felt severely limited eventually. Got my hands on Ableton today and your Tutorial is a great help. A lot of similarities between the programs, but it's the simple things that Ableton does the most different. In a way I like, to be honest. And I can already tell I will enjoy the workflow with Ableton a lot more than FLStudio. It served me well. I think its THE daw to learn daws. But Ableton is just so... clean, I dont know how else to put it.
Any updates? 👀 also what version of each do you have? I have fl producer but I want to switch to ableton, the price difference between versions is steep though, I want to know which version is best to start with!
I used fl studio since 2011 and i felt super limited and in 2015 i decided to use ableton live and booom , my ideas got more and more better my organization went better and i think that was the best thing i ever do , so congratulation for finally switch to the real music produccion world🎉
FL studio being the best DAW to learn DAWS us actually the opposite of truth. It's one of the easier DAWS to learn, but the format is so uniquely it's own, what you learn is not very transferable to other DAWS, unlike Pro Tools, Reaper or Ableton.
The best DAWS that teach you to be the most effective with DAWS universally would actually be something more like Reaper - seeing as how learning it's very un-user friendly UI will make you super prepared to learn new DAWS.
Went through the same process. Used FL to start. But I went to a music production class that only used Ableton. I understood the process better and ideas were easier to develop. FL is muuuuuuch better now than in 2016, and I jump in on occasion to change things up & use its instruments to create ideas, then drag back to Ableton. Every daw is just a tool for you to use however it works best for you.
Same here - I had Live 11 90 day Trial as my very 1st DAW. Then I got an M32 Komplete Kontrol 🎹 with Lite. The 8 Track is too limiting after using licensed FL Studio.
But WOW after 2.5yrs mastering FL, with Ableton familiarity, going to the 30 day Live 12 Full Licence is just INSANELY efficient. My orphaned samples from old projects are now becoming the nucleus of new tracks, I can play my instruments straight into the Audio Channels or MIDI.
Assuming unlimited Creativity, the difference is probably a 700% increase in efficiency of Production (7x).
✌🏻
Legend for posting so many tutorial/beginner videos like this!
Agreed
Wicked no fluff fast and comprehensive Ableton tutorial Nice one Ethan
Absolute legend man, I'm just getting into making the music I've been listening to for decades and your whole channel is an absolute treasure trove of useful information.
Thank you so much for the new Live 12 walk through. I really appreciate your time and showing us all the new basic features. Thanks again Ethan. Salute.
I have been searching for tutorial videos for weeks and this is the first video that has walked me through the program without overwhelming me. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
This was soooooo helpful! I have to learn Ableton in basically a few days in order to complete a project. Your video has saved me so much time!
Wish you had this vid years ago! Took me so long just to figure out and learn the basics that you showed in 20 mins!! Thanks
Another cool thing you can do is take time to learn each audio effect and instrument. IMO if you learn all
the goodies Ableton offers, you’ll be the king of CPU. 😂 especially the 3 band channel EQ they have.
Quick on the go eq!
Wow for someone who knew nothing about making music this is awesome. I’m always looking for a challenge and this seemed like a fun one. I learned a lot in a little amount of time! Great video!
Before a week I watched your Ableton 11 guide video & now this. Thank you so much ❤
Thank you, Ethan! Starting with Ableton for 5th time, but now seems like less struggle. Great tutorials!
This was awesome, clean, and very easy to understand. A great walk through and the right amount of thorough. That last statement spoke directly to me. Thank you, big bro! 🫡🫡🫡

Super clear and concise vid! just got the Ableton free trial and I took some notes while watching this. Subbed
I viewed a lot of videos about Ableton 12, but I chose this to begin learning. It is straightforward, teaches the basics, shows good features and the essentials to kick the ground and move. So thank you for sharing this. I am now jumping to your Music Theory video.
You're very welcome!
Thank you, Ethan. That was very comprehensive! I would love to see you talk about the new Generative Features in 12.
Very informative thank you being clear and concise! You make it look so easy! Gotta get busy!!!
Dude I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from you in just a short space of time! Thank you for doing this for all of us. I’ll have to send you my songs to hear them once they’re ready, once they’re done, thanks to your tutorials and all!!

You’re very good at this! That was a fun video. Thank you.
Great work bro. Totally worth the effort you were putting in!
Incredibly helpful guide. Thank you very much
I'm using FL Studio for years now, but recently downloaded Ableton Lite which came with a MIDI keyboard a few years back. Mixing was kinda a struggle but this tutorial is really straight forward and helped me to figure some things out. I don't think I'm gonna switch, but learning things is always good!
I've been using ableton for a few years, and watching this video taught me at least 10 things I didn't know! Thanks Ethan :)
Most helpful: Default template & limiter

love this, especially the parts about ideas flowing out of one's mind straight to the speakers
I am using LMMS for some years now and can't find some tutorials that I want. Although I managed how to work with it but, I think I need a newer DAW to work with. I am seeing lots of beginners using Ableton. Luckily, when I search for tutorial, yours pop-out first. I am satisfied with the tutorial, and looking forward for myself playing around Ableton. Thank you so much!
that subscription bit was smooth as jazz
ROFL - thanks Ethan for a fantastic video!

no porblem!
Thanks for the video bro !!!! Big Help !
Great tutorial for beginners and light users. I would also recommend Ableton's built in Glue Compressor, EQ 8 and Utility. Again Great video I feel like it covered a lot to get started. Agree 100% with learning those shortcuts asap. Liked and subscribed.
OOHHHH MAN ! YOU ARE AMAZING , YOU SAVED MY LIFE
Thanks, Ethan
Thanks!
I’ve wanted to learn how to make my own beats for years. They used to have simpler free tools way back and I remember having so much fun creating music as a kid. I’d be starting from scratch, but this looks like fun to learn. Definitely subbing for when I’m ready to start.
We need part two this was so informative
i have plans to make a video with more features of Ableton 12 for sure!
Great! Thank you very much 🎉
thank you so much for this tutorial! so helpful transferring from adobe audition (NOT made for music production) to ableton.
You're very welcome!
Enjoyed this... THOROUGHLY!!!! Blessings!
Great video!
Respect man. I hope Ableton pays you for this cause I am buying it right now ....
Super fast and engaging tutorial.
thank you, friend.
This is some perfect timing :D
I'm trying to create a song for a project in school, this is really helpful.
how did it go?
@@Dalton01642 For a first time not even bad, but it was way harder than excpected!
THANK YOU!!!
ngl dat beat at the end was a bangin tune haha great video!
Bless you bro, you helped me. A power FL user who is thinking of switching to Ableton.
i made the switch over 10 years ago and it helped a lot! but FL is great too
Glad to know my programming background will come in handy. Always gotta ctrl+s with every change xD
you have a cool personality. I have just started to watch.
thanks brother. ^^
Ehi thank you very much for this super clear tutorial. Finally someone who says everything basics about Ableton without making it intimidating! I'm a total beginner producer (I was used to sing and songwrite), so... do you suggest me to buy the intro, the standard or the suite version? Just to tell you (in order to give me a better answer), I want to produce electronic/almost techno music, like old school techno, so... yeah... I need an advice 😅
Keep going!
Super well done video. Appreciate you. Finally made the jump from Reason to Ableton, cuz like you said, I'm done making excuses 😄
Great video
Cool! Thanks man!
I've wanted to buy Abelton, but to be honest, I've been intimidated by it, but this video is AMAZING. Thank you for breaking it down to fragments that I can easily understand. Much appreciated!🙏🏾✊🏾💚
Happy to help! You got this!
Yo! What an amazing lesson! Love the way you explain. - DJ Paris
Glad you liked it!
thank u keep uploading plz
Amazing video! Quick question, is there a way to change the piano roll to single click to add notes?
Can I get a First? :D Just starting my music production journey and I have to say I absolutely LOVE your content and find it extremely helpful!!
you win!! thank you for the kind words, for real (:
I love drum and bass and I've been always hearing some styles that don't happen on some of them so im thinking of trying out to see how it sounds. but wow it looks tough. lol
Love from India 🙂✌🏻
nice work🤑
Please make a video only about arrangement, and how we can make it more efficient and practical. Thanks!
Great video! Would be interested in hearing about which Abelton version is best for value/ the break down of the list of items under each version... looking at it like, I have no idea what those things are. haha. I'm looking at getting into recording producing my music but on a budget, .. so would be interested to hear also where you would look to spend the money vs where you would save. Thanks for these videos!
I would honestly absolutely go with Standard. Lite is way too limiting and Suite is unnecessary. Hope that helps!
LIFE SAVER!!!! My midi keyboards power supply stopped working didn’t kno u can use the computers keyboard
Good stuff
For Windows users: In the "Driver type" box choose ASIO necessarily if you have audio interface. I spent an hour to find the solution of the problem with bad cracking sound and huge latency
thanks from Germany
you're welcome! from the US
I learned more about Ableton in 22 minutes than I did in 6 years recording just Audio. Thank you.
:O wow!! happy to help
nah u beasted out in this video, thank you!!!
Great video, just a little quick for me on certain things, especially the vocal tuning, I'll have to re-watch in slomo... but still good basics.. I have one question that you might or might not know, I upgraded to 12 Suite, does this mean I can uninstall 11??? I did log a ticket with Alberton, but they are sooooo SLOW!!!!! and its been a good few weeks now
Great beginner tutorial. I also wanted to know how can I see a midi pattern play in the drum rack. For example I remember in Ableton 9 when I selected an adg file from the packs it played automatically and I could also see the pattern being played in the drum rack, and then I could choose which instrument from that adg pattern to remove or add in the drum rack and in real time while it was playing! How can I do this in Ableton 12? I couldn't find it, any help would be very appreciated, thanks!
Legend! ❤
