Jade plants officially known as Crassula Ovata might be one of the most common and popular succulent plants out there. Its popularity as a houseplant is initially rose due to the fact that it needs very little care to survive and can endure in most indoor conditions.
Known to some as money plant, the money tree, or lucky plant, you can understand the reason for its popularity based on its common names.
Jade plants are forgiving plants and easy to care for. They are resilient and hardy, which make them a great choice for a starter or beginner plant. I always suggest this plant to beginner succulent lovers as it is very hard to kill. It is a succulent plant that requires very little water to survive in the summer, and even less in winter.
Generally speaking, jade plants, like most succulent plants, need at least 5-6 hours a day of bright sunlight to grow properly. If kept by the window that receives bright intense sun, especially afternoon sun, the leaves might experience sunburn (brown spots), until acclimated to the intense sunlight. To avoid this, gradually increase the amount of intense sun it receives.
Jade plants prefer plenty of sun, but direct sunlight, especially intense afternoon sun, can burn the leaves of the plant. You will see sunburned spots on the leaves (brown spots) when this happens. To prevent this from happening, you can move the plant to a location where it receives plenty of bright morning sun as opposed to afternoon sun.
I also get a lot of questions on how to get a jade plant to bloom While getting your jade plant to bloom is not a priority, it is definitely a treat to see happy flowers blooming from it. I have lots of jade plants that blooms every year. There is no exact science on how to get them to bloom, but generally, if you keep your plant healthy and happy by providing proper care and nutrients, as mentioned above, the plant will naturally bloom when it’s ready. To encourage blooms, the plants need to be kept in an environment that mimics their natural habitat. This can be achieved by keeping them cool and dry in the winter months. You need to decrease watering the plant, to a minimum, and only water when the soil is dry but not bone dry.
Jade plants are one of the easiest plants to grow and propagate.
They can be propagated by a stem or leaf cutting. Make sure to take the whole leaf including the base or the leaf will not survive. Make sure to put the cuttings aside to dry for a day or more until the cut part has completely callused over. You can dip cuttings or leaves in rooting hormone and that will speed up the root growth, but totally optional as Jade plants reproduce like crazy!
Next, stick the cuttings in a well draining potting mix. You can either stick the leaf cuttings in soil or lay them flat on the soil.
Make sure to keep the cuttings and leaves away from direct sunlight. I typically have roots form on my cuttings in about two weeks time. The stem cuttings will be fully rooted in about 6-8 weeks. Tug at the stem and if they do not come off easily from the soil, the stems have rooted.
Leaf cuttings take longer because you need to wait for a new plant to sprout and for it to grow bigger. The whole process may take anywhere from 8 weeks to a few months from leaf propagation. Increase sunlight once the plants are established. I water once every ten days or so once the plants are mature.
Best & detailed description you have given no one has given yet now. Thanks
Yay! That makes me so happy! I appreciate you stopping by!💚
The sea glass is a very nice touch and helps the environment. Thank you.
Thank you too!
Hi dear I never know that much details about jade plants . I thought I know everything about jade plant until I seen this video. Stay connected my new friend. I killed so many succulent by watering too much and I learn from mistake. Now I know how to take care of them. Wow it’s blooming which I never know. Thank you for all these information
Never knew I had a Jade plant all these years. I've always had it outside in a BIG pot (got a clipping from my brother and saw how wild it grows in the ground outside). So I live in an area where it gets just below freezing, and in the summer up over 100°. I always cover the Jade plant with a light blanket when the freezing temps kick in, then put a fitted sheet over it (very windy where I live). I always thought it was odd my Jade plant would sprout beautiful flowers in January when the temps were so low. I'm rooting some clippings, and now know more information due to your very informative video.
Awesome! Thanks for the tips about the fitted sheet/blanket. That is actually a great solution to cold temps/wind. Thanks for sharing, I love learning from you all!
Wow Moody Blooms I have learnt a lot today about the jade plant. I can from today take excellent care my jade plants. Thank you for your most educative lesson which had no digressions but straight to the point. 😍
You are very welcome!
Watching this because I am about to propagate and repot my jade. This is so comprehensive! Great video. 😃
Thanks so much!! Hope all goes well with your Jade.
Cactus Caffeine I am literally ( like 20 minutes away ) from finally repotting my jade plant after ab 2 to 2 1/2 years! I’m super excited ( bc it needs it lol ) & hope to do some propagating being it’s a little leggy ( bigger leaves & some gaps in between the leaves ). How did yours turn out? Any new suggestions from you @Moody Blooms? Thanks in Advance 😊!
Very nice video👌
I had no idea jade plant bloom I am so happy i learn this today ,thank you .
Glad it was helpful! Hope your Sunday is lovely Jenny!!!!
I just purchased a tiny baby Jade plant and I was looking on UA-cam for instructions on how to take care of it. I found your video and it was very informative and I look forward to watching more of your videos to help me take good care of my Jade plant. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Glad I could help!
I love my jade plant and she's got lovely pink outlines right now! The winter is a struggle for me, because the light level is low inside my house. But the jade seemed to do ok. It is very easy to keep! I'll remember your tip to recommend it as a good beginner succulent.
Thanks so much Patty! I really appreciate your support! Do you ever use grow lights in winter?
moodyblooms I’ve never tried them but after the gloomy winter we had last year I might have to consider it. My space is pretty small so I’m not sure how I would set it up, but I might have to figure it out. Everything did ok except my echeveria and that poor sad thing I shared in the video. Which is doing well now, but it’s outside enjoying the summer here.
Thank you. I'll try again. My cuttings look deadish so they went into the garbage. Think I should get them back?
@@Jean-ni6of I would just buy a fresh plant, to be honest. Succulents are pretty hard to revive and if you're in the northern hemisphere the days are going so short and that's a struggle for even a healthy plant.
Some really good information on succulent cutting arrangements and propagation! Enjoyed watching! 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment! Thanks so much for your support! Have a great day!
The jade is such a beautiful plant. Someday, when I'm rich and famous 🙃I am going to have you come in and care for all my plants. You are an absolute artist in the plant world. We LOVE your videos. Thanks for another great share.
You are so sweet! That is so nice of you to say. It really means a lot. Have a wonderful night my dear!

We had these jade plants grow like wildflower in our yard in California back in the day. This is a really in-depth overview of this plant, well done moodyblooms! like#27

Thank you for your video. I have been wanting a jade plant. I bought succulent watching your video help me realize that it is a jade plant. Your video is very informative I appreciate your time and energy you put into it. Learned a lot from this video I subscribed to it and liked it also.
Hi Sarah! That was so nice of you to take the time to comment. I am glad it was helpful! I hope you have a lovely Sunday!
I searched for Pruning Jade Plant & out of allllllllllll the vids that came up, yours was the 2nd one I watched. BOY, AM I GLAD I DID!!!
Thank you for such an information-packed Jade lesson!!! I learned SOOOO much & I needed every bit of it!!!
I now have NO fear of cutting my plant back!
***my 1 & only question is: if I cut off a long bare/naked "branch" can I root it as it has no leaves? Will it root?
I am so happy you stopped by Teri!! Thanks so much for your sweet comment, it really means a lot. I find my cuttings do better when there is still a leaf attached (better success that way), but I also have cuttings that will root with no leaves at all. I'd love to hear how it goes with your cuttings. Please let me know if you have any other questions! Hope your day is great! Take care, Mary Ellen

I really enjoyed watching this informative video on Jades. I just bought two plants a few days ago and took to you tube to try to Learn more about their care and yours is the best by far. So descriptive and it is funny you almost describe and give information just like Martha Stewart ( I LOVE LOVE LOVE HER!)
One reason is because she is so clear with her information that she and you leave no room for misinformation or misinterpretation which is VERY MUCH appreciated 🥰🥰🥰

You are welcome my lovely friend. Have a blessed day !!!!!!!!!!!
Very helpful video. Thank you. The only thing I was hoping for was more information about how to prune a jade if you want it to be more tree-like.
Hi Susie! Sorry I did not cover that. I can definitely make another video about that. For now I suggest trimming the lower branches. Typically where you make cuts, you will promote more growth, so you will need to continually trim the lower branches. It does take a while for the trunk to grow really thick though, so keep that in mind. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks so much for watching. Hope your weekend is great Susie!
I just got my jade plant and I'm so excited to take care of it...
Tbh most of my succulents have died so I hope I can grow this else..
The best thing you can do is NOT over water your succulent. They take much less water than other plants. How is it doing now?

Hi, this video was very helpful. I love the variegated as well and have brought it about 2 or 3 times and it always dies. I just got another cutting and I hope It grows this time. Thanks again for this video 🎊✨🎆🎇🎉
Hi Debra! I’m so glad it was helpful. Usually issues are caused by too much water or not enough. Have you tried propagating cuttings in water? It has worked really well for me. Please let me know if you have any questions. Happy Easter!!🐇

Very informative. We had huge one in our backyard in the shade. We moved it out front in the sun and killed it. I think we shocked it ☹️ I wish I saw this before we moved it.
What a bummer! They are super easy to propagate so grab a cutting and stick it in back in the shade and it will do well!
moodyblooms yeah, now I know 👍 thanks!

My crassula is on a window facing Northwest, no direct sun but all the light it can want. I give it a small glass of water every week, and in summer it gets "showered" several times a day with water from a bottle with the stopper pierced, to keep it clean and fresh. It's dark green and healthy, but I didn't know I was supposed to feed it so often... I'll be doing it from now on. Maybe some day I'll even get flowers...
Happy to hear it is healthy!!

I'm going to have to watch this again... rooting cuttings in soil to restart a really messed up and stretched/leaning jade. Watering... is it ok to get water on the leaves?
It is ok to occasionally get water on the leaves, but be sure they are not in direct sun with wet leaves, as this can burn the leaves. It is best not to get the leaves wet and I like to water from the bottom when I have time. I set the pot in a wider tray of water and let it soak p what water it needs. Let me know if you have any further questions.
@@moodyblooms They're in a big pot together side by side. There's no way to avoid the leaves. They just get morning light through a window.
Your videos are so informative.

These are always warmer climates then where I live. Mine are all inside for the winter. I'm in Oregon and the wetest part.
Yes, they def need to be moved inside in winter in colder climates.
Can i use perlite mix instead of pumise on my soil for jade plants
Lucian Sotingco I use perlite all the time in my soil! Great for succulents.
What about vermeculite is it also suitable for cactus and succulents

I have a few jades. One of them does not have shiny leaves. They almost feel somewhat fuzzy. But my other one has tinier, shiny leaves.
Is the tiny one an elephant ears plant?
@@moodyblooms Since I posted that comment, I watched some more videos. I believe on another video of yours, I found out that it was a portulacaria afra. Which, I now know it is not a jade at all.

Yay! Thanks so much!!💚
So helpful, thank you. Mine was stretching but I got some taller shelves so it has more access to window light and it has perked up with some new growth on top after a year of doing nothing :-) Do you have a video on reviving succulents in water? In terms of type of water, how often to change the water, where to place them, how long it takes before you can plant into soil etc? I had an aloe go mouldy and completely mush but prior to that had managed to split off three smaller plants from it. They are doing 'ok' but in 3 months and despite increasing sunlight here in the UK, they don't seem to be growing at all. Many thanks :-)
I have a water propagation video but I think I need to do an updated version as I still get a lot of questions. I just use tap water and place the cutting in the water after 3-5 days. Water should be changed weekly however I am really bad at doing to since I have so many in water. I try my best to keep the water clean. I wait until there are a decent amount of roots before I place them in soil. Are the aloe pups in water or soil?
ua-cam.com/video/AU58Ovk-rDU/v-deo.html link to water prop video
@@moodyblooms thank you so much for the reply. I've got one of the aloe in water but will deff start changing the water more often. It's been a couple of weeks and a few white roots have started, leaves look no different. The other two are in soil together but I was thinking of giving them a pot of soil each or trying water only. Do aloe generally like a lot of space each or are they happy to crowd? 😁 Will check out your water vid. Thanks again!
@@yzolakitchi Aloes are fine in the same pot. They produce pups at the base so just be sure they have room to grow new babies. The new white roots on the one in aloe is a great sign! Keep changing the water and make sure they are not in direct sun.
@@moodyblooms fabulous. Thanks so much. Maybe you've done a vid on best pot sizes and shapes for different plants already, but if not, I think that could be super useful to other newbies like myself. You are great at explaining things clearly. So glad I found your channel 😁 Have a fabulous day 🌱

I am new to the beautiful Jade plant, and my plant is drooping. I understand due to over watering possibly.
As well as I read that during the spring and summer to water once a week, then fall and winter once a month is this correct? Thanks so much in advance. It is still in the same pot I bought it in.
It really depends on your climate. The more humidity the less you will water. I don’t really water on a schedule, rather how the plant looks. The soil must be completely dry before watering again. If leaves look plump and full, I wait to water. It also depends on how much light it is getting. Plants in lower light conditions and typically indoor plants will need less water than an outdoor plant exposed to more sun. Once the leaves barely start a to look thin and an less plump, then I water. Even in summer I probably only water my jade plants 2x/week. I find they actually need less water than other succulents. The best foolproof way for beginners to water is with a moisture meter. They are usually less than $10 and I believe I even have a link in the description. I have a few and I still use them when I am in doubt. I hope that helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I have a “Jade Problems” video coming soon. Hopefully to answer more questions for those just starting out. Have a beautiful day and thanks for watching!💚🌱

Hi , I know this video is a year old but I really enjoyed watching !
I Just subscribed to your channel 🙂
I bought a Jade plant on March 2nd , The lady I bought from said not to water for 2 weeks . MARCH 9th made a week of having it & I did go ahead and re-pot because she had mini wandering jew with it , so I separated . I did use a cactus & succulent soil & mixed some perlite in & planted Jade in a tera cotta pot .
I have on shelf in front of south facing window . The Jade leafs are looking droopy , they bend , and are kind of faded , they started looking this way before I re-potted . The soil it was in was not good drainage . Should I go ahead and continue to wait and water ? The 16th will make 2 weeks .
I appreciate your help and any tips , thank you so much & God bless ❤
Hi Beverly! Thanks for watching and supporting. Sorry for the delay on getting back to you. If the leaves are wrinkled then it may need some water. Make sire the soil is completely dry before watering again. I hope it is doing well!! Take care!
@@moodyblooms , thank you for your reply 🙂 after repotting Jade I left for almost a week & gave a good watering . I guess my leaves weren't as plump because it was dormant .
So far so good with my Jade . I really think it , along with my other plants like when I sing to them lol
Have a beautiful rest of the week 🥰
