You also forgot to mention his poorly researched reviews. For instance, in his Toy Story 3 review, he says that Hamm the piggy bank is the villain, when he's actually one of the good guys. This leads people to wonder if he even WATCHES the movies he's reviewing.
Armond white isn't your ordinary critic. He rated opposite of everything. So if he rated Mass effect a 10 you'd know it's bad. Did YOU even research his critiqing method?

You probably do not understand the reason why critics exist;
They exist to comment on a piece of work that people have made. Some praise works, some deride works. It's all opinionated and it shows very well.
Roger Ebert is a notorious critic who pretty much shits on films, but he surprisingly has praised films that are absolute shit to most simply because he thinks it's a fun movie no one should take seriously.
These people do not exist just to discourage, because they praise other works of art as well. Whether or not it's actually justified is another statement altogether.

Comparing two conceptually different movies, their topics, and their executions would be hard, since comedy is simple to do, simple to write and simple to digest whereas something like A Clockwork Orange would be harder to digest because its meaning is more complex and requires a whole lot more time to process. (BTW; Hotel Transylvania is not half bad for a Sandler film.)
And their whole profession is not provoking a response, but to relay their response and how they see the film in question.
Take for example; Animal Farm. Any layman would never think of it as an allegory to Stalin's rise to power in the U.S.S.R., but critics are there to see that it IS an allegory.
And no, not really because the internet is never really a trustworthy source of opinionated information due to circlejerks and whatnot. Have you ever seen the IMDB forums? Those guys are much worse than the folks up at Metacritic and RT.
Andi Rain Not exactly, because comedy is broad since illiciting a humourous response depends on topicality, shock value and timing. Deadpool has done good, crass, lowbrow comedy. You are talking about highbrow comedy, which is significantly harder to write and act but not exactly harder to direct. Kudos for the great examples, got to watch those again.
Also, I was talking through the lens of a layman. My mother of 41 and my grandmother of 70 as well as my entire college (this was due to a literature project I had in freshman year) never thought of Animal Farm as anything more than a cheeky film about animals rising up and falling down to class disparity once again. No matter the subject matter or the author's agenda, you can never expect the mass public to know about an adaptation of a book despite it's relevance to the era.
Anyone with a shred of cynicism in their minds when it comes to gaming, and the same goes for films.

Izayakuun this is wrong in so many levels. Toy Story 3, nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. A beautiful movie. Transformers 2, won Worst Picture at the Razzies. A racist, sexist, unfunny, time waster, and insulting to the audiences.

Sometimes his reviews don't even include factually accurate things about the movies. In his Toy Story 3 review, he claimed Hamm was the main antagonist of the film, which probably means he watched less than five minutes of it.
Rotten Tomatoes is really the worst thing to happen to movie reviews, many people don't even check reviews to see arguments for or against, they just recite RT critic scores like it's a factual basis of film quality.
I'm honestly thankful to folks like Armond who intentionally throw off the system.

The world's worst film critic would be any critic who blindy loves/hates a film and/or doesn't back up their opinions with anything meaningful. Armond White explains his opinions very well, and just because his opinions may be "wrong" there are certainly critics out there who are worse. I don't agree with him at all, but I take him more seriously than anyone who thought that Suicide Squad was a great film.

I think is perfectly normal to dislike a movie that is loved by most people. Critics have to explain what they didn't like, go in depth what they perceive as a flaw, and this where Armond White gets the title of worst film critic. He consistently misses the point of movies, complains about things that aren't really in the movie (or aren't important) while dismissing the actual flaws the movie has - for example, The Dark Knight cuts to a completely different scene every 15s, with almost precision timing, but he didn't notice that.

I actually enjoy his reviews even when I disagree with them. He writes eloquently and his takes on films are unique, he doesn't pander to his audience or care if a film is supposed to be a film intended for critics or not.
He looks at films less in terms of story structure, character development, etc. and more through a cultural and philosophical lens. He appreciates earnestness and hates cynicism, hence his contempt for 12 Years a Slave and his praise for Tramsformers. His opinions are interesting, while very few critics' are.
This isn't to say I agree with many of his reviews. He gave the original Star Wars zero stars, and it's my favorite movie. Doesn't mean I can't enjoy his writing or appreciate his perspective.
Honestly he writes a lot of utter dreck, it would be cool if he had any legitimate criticism of the films he reviews.

People giving him a bad rep. There is one thing Armond White does better than 99% of reviewers out there is he stays CONSISTENT. He consistently loves bad movies and hates good ones, so in many ways he's better than most reviewers for that reason alone.
Not really consistent. I mean, he did give No Country for Old Men and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, both of which got positive reviews. And on the other side, he gave Suicide Squad a bad review, and we can all agree that's a big piece of shit, even the critics.

I know this comment is 4 years old, but I'm just commenting to remind everyone that's reading that not all opinions are equally valuable. You can hold an opinion, you are entitled to have your own, you're allowed that. But your opinion can be, and often is, absolutely worthless when compared to the opinions of those that are more familiar and knowledgeable on the subject matter that you hold the opinion on.

For what it's worth I"ve looked this guy up after reading his review of Spielberg's 2001 A.I. Artificial Intelligence (which I think is a masterpiece), because I found it very accurately insightful and well-informed. Also a bit impenetrable for someone who hasn't watched almost any of the movies he references, and for its academically oblique style to an extent. But still singularly, penetratingly insighful, and I suggest you check it out if you're inclined to believe that Armond is nothing but a troll. The review is titled *Spielberg's A.I. Dares Viewers to Remember and Accept the Part of Themselves that Is Capable of Feeling*

At first, thought he may just be a very difficult critic to please, but the moment you mentioned his positive review of "Jack and Jill", it was confirmed he's just a troll in the guise of a film critic. (I actually typed this before you mentioned Ebert's calling him the same.)
There is no such thing as a poor opinion on entertainment. Not everyone is going to enjoy the most popular movies. The majority of people can love the Dark Knight and I am in the majority. However, Armond has every right to be turned off by the movie. He's not being a troll. People should not be labeled as trolls for disagreeing with the majority. I do not like most Disney movies. That's not being a troll. It's having a different taste for entertainment.

Opinions may be opinions... but comparisons of the opinions presented forth by Mr. White can be made and it really does show that he may just be trolling.
I used to think that too. One thing that isn't mentioned in the video is that Roger Ebert actually used to defend him as a smart guy with unpopular opinions. Then Ebert was shown a full list of White's reviews and conceded that he was a "troll."
I can't say one-hundred percent that he's a troll or completely sincere, but after seeing how he goes out of his way to have contrary opinions and be really outspoken about them, I have to admit that he has to at least let a contrarian streak guide the way he presents his views. I read his negative review of Toy Story 3 and it read like a conspiracy theory, talking about how it celebrated capitalism by being about toys. In his positive review of Transformers 2, he kept referencing District 9 (which he hated) and talked about how much better Transformers was, almost like he was rubbing the contrarian nature of his opinions in everyone's face.
There's a similar critic from a few decades ago named Pauline Kael. She was also very contrarian, and she's considered the Beatles of film criticism. She bashed a lot of acclaimed films like Lawrence of Arabia and really liked a lot of panned ones, but she didn't have that same thing that there is with White, who seems to intentionally go against the grain at every opportunity and with pretty weak arguments (I remember one review where he bashed the movie and spent the entire time talking about the band The Ting-Tings instead of explaining why).

Though I agree with that opinion, that last one part is very misleading because extraordinary evidence needs a certain threshold on how to determine what is truly "extraordinary". Since almost any sort of threshold anyone uses to determine what is "extraordinary" is almost always inaccurate (which is why this phrase is immediately disregarded in debates about the existence of a deity), the phrase in question is wholly meaningless.

By using Rotten Tomatoes you're still relying on critics albeit a couple hundred of them.
Come on, pretty much EVERYONE who goes to movies in North America does.
At least it's a cross section of opinions (as biased as those opinions may be), so you can get a general sense. But yeah, I agree with you that critics are influenced by money, perks or political bias.
I don't relay on reviews for anything I want to see,whether it be a game or movie or music, but I'll usually look at other people's opinions on things I've seen, played or listened to to see if they liked it or not just so I don't feel bad for watching something that someone else considers to be shit.

There are 7 billion people on earth, theres definetly someone who likes unpoular movies and dislikes popular ones.
Sandler-style comedies are some of the most degrading, mean-spirited I've seen. Much rather watch The Dark Knight because at least that has a hero who stands for something, instead of a whole cast of cynical caricatures.

oh Jack and Jill, great movie, it hit so many personal notes with me.
i totally understand the pains and can feel apathetic to the struggles of Jack who works directing commercials for hammed in product placements. the idea that he lives by the dollar shows that anyone can be a corporate shill. a shell of who they use to be. and the added on stress of having a twin sister really reflects one's inner demon. aside from managing the depressions and stress of life, you have to face your own past, your own demons, and the movie felt like a message of positiveness that you are not alone on feeling helpless, you can achieve and overcome any obstacle and better yourself, and shows that family is all the matters. family and good friends. the message in the movie left me crying because it was so well written and deep in it's atmosphere. and i thank Armond for showing me that Jack and Jill is a movie worthy of the criterion collection. the scene i felt most relative to was probably when Jill was farting and saying "poopie!" because it reflects that no one is perfect, we all have our insecurities that was hide from the public. and sometimes you need to show the world who you are and not feel ashamed.
just kidding, Jack and Jill makes me want to drink bleach and this guy must be suffering some kind of schizophrenia or hemorrhage to think anyone could stand 2 fucking seconds of Adam Sandler screaming in a high exaggerated Jewish voice and going on about farts and "poopies" and a bunch of other obnoxious kindergarten bullshit.

judging is a critic good or bad isn't about what scores they give. it's about their writing and what words they choose. everyone can say their opinions but only a good critic can say it so that people want to hear it. being a critic is more about being a writer than critic actually

Love how you, along with many others, highlight Adam Sandler and Transformers movies instead of focusing on his love for Whit Stillman, Wes Anderson, Steven Spielberg, Wong Kar Wai, the Coen Brothers, etc., and great foreign directors like Chen Kaige, Francois Ozon, Jean Pierre Jeunet, etc..
But simply reading the review excerpts as positive or negative towards the film just perpetuates the good/bad binary of film criticism, ignoring any nuance in the review itself.

As someone who personally worked with him and would summarize him as "primadonna asshole", I can certified that he authentic and REALLY BELIEVE in what he is saying. I generally don't agree with his review but I still like to read them on occasion because reading different perspective is refreshing. Plus, I have to admit I do agree with him when come to the Hollywood propaganda and how it effect films today
