The sad thing is that my teachers would just shrug their shoulders and talk about how we “should’ve just eaten at home” and then go on about how we need to “pay better attention in class” because of one test. We really need more teachers like you.
I'm sorry that was your experience. 🥺 I think most teachers try to be like this now, certainly the ones I know. My district actually works with churches that pack "snack packs" for kids to take home Friday afternoon that usually includes something like protein bars or boxes of macaroni and cheese, and all schools have a "little pantry" by one of the main doors where anyone can pick up or leave food, but some schools keep back most of what is donated monthly from the grocery stores instead of sending it to The Midwest Food Bank that would otherwise take their nearly out of date food (meaning 60-90 days).
@@KatieCottingham that’s makes me so happy that your school does that! Stuff like that should really be normalized especially with the world right now.
That student quietly telling the teacher instead of announcing it to the whole class really resonated with me. Good on that kid, good on the teacher, and I hope that stories like this can become more common in the real world.
Would be better if there was a socially responsible infrastructure that eliminated the need for children to receive charity food from their teachers, who are also on food Stamps in some states. You know? Stuff like livable wages and guaranteed unemployment aid, and disability aid, paid sick days and parental leave and universal healthcare and free education and such. Would most likely result in no kids needing hand outs from overworked and underpaid teachers. And also the teachers would be paid fairly.
My school had a program where the kids in families that struggle with food, where they send a bag of food home for kids on the weekend. They included 2 juice boxes, 2 bowls of cereal, 2 boxes of milk, a pack of peanut butter crackers, fruit snacks, and a can of ravioli and spaghettiO's.
My schools had that as well. They always called them backpack buddies and made sure each kid had the right amount of food to last them till when they gave them out the next week
That's so sweet. More schools should do this, students don't care about our system of bells that don't matter because teAchErs dismiss us, or decorations, or odd events that none of us go to, as long as kids who are struggling with money get fed.
This actually brought a tear to my eye. I was supper neglected as a kid and my third grade teacher I will never forget. She used to bring me food, my hair was a mess I never brushed it and I let it get knotted beyond belief. It was constantly in my face and made it hard for me to see so she went to the store and picked up a ton of hair products. The next day we where taking a spelling test and she stood over me carefully working out at the knots making my hair looks beautiful again. Mis Nikovage (I believe that was how it’s spelt 😅) you are an angel and I’m so happy to have crossed paths with you.

My art teacher in high school noticed I wasn't eating lunch and when she asked why I told her it was cause I couldn't afford it. that day she took me up to the cafeteria and payed for my lunch the whole rest of the year. 😅 Ms. Shelley was an awesome teacher :)
This reminds me of the time my moms food stamps didn’t come in, and my grandfather had left for 2 weeks. So we were literally at the bottom of the barrel. I went to school so hungry and tired, but my Spanish teacher see, she and I spent lunches together. So I told her about my situation and she had given me $5 for myself to have. I dunno but that $5 meant the honest world to me. I loved that teacher so much, she listened to me a lot and went out of her way for me. This is a bonus but, I used to love Alpacas so much it was all I’d talk about to the same teacher. Well she lived near a farm, and would take lots of pictures & videos of the alpacas for me. If I asked her to pet them for me, she did! I hope she’s okay now, she was truly the best!
I was so thankful the last classroom I worked in was like this. We were a special ed classroom that had kids with a variety of home situations, but no matter what at school they had food and a hairbrush waiting for them, as well as four teachers who cared about them.
This used to me in school; hungry and starving but my mom REFUSED help from anyone and everytime I would tell someone I’m starving or tired-I would get my ass whooped! But omg thank god there are teachers like you out there! I don’t think I would’ve survived if it wasn’t for supportive teachers that knew I couldn’t tell anyone but needed to eat and sleep.
This is the kind of teacher AND mom I want to be once I’m older. But I wanna be a foster mom, I feel like I could help so many kids with those two positions! ❤
My household only had junk food at our house and I never ate it cause it made me feel ill in elementary school so my teacher in 5th grade packed an extra breakfast for me every morning and I'm so greatful to have had that. Teachers like you are the best and I'm very certain that student was greatful!
as a poor kid, you have no idea how important that is for us. a lot of teachers will be rude to us when we can't afford something. so someone being kind, especially if they also help, means more than we can ever express.
My mom was in the hospital for like two weeks because she has a chronic illness and when my teacher found out she ordered us pizza, pasta, and salad so that my dad didn't have to make us sandwiches anymore. I will forever be grateful I had a teacher like this and hope that others do too
The teacher I’ll never forget: often during breakfast they had a table where if you were done eating and had unopened food left, you could put it on the table to be either used for the next day or for students to eat something extra during breakfast. We never ever had food, unless cos notified they were coming over then our Cabnents would be stocked good enough to not raise concern, ANYWAYS so I would typically take a few packets of graham crackers/cereal, etc to take home. Well this wasn’t allowed, as food wasn’t allowed out of the cafeteria, so I would have to sneak doing it. One day a teacher noticed me and asked what I thought I was doing (prob thinking I’m going to eat in class or something ) I didn’t really think I said “we have no food at home” and her face dropped and looked very sympathetic. She let me keep the food after that and I wasn’t stopped again
My school was in a low income area, so they had an event where they would call one kid down from every family to grab a box of food every weekend. Thanks to them, my family had food on days where we didn't think we would. More schools need this.
We need a teacher like that. My teacher would've called my parents and forced all the blame on them. Not help me at all. LIKE THAT DOESNT SOLVE MY HUNGER PLUS ILL FEEL BAD FOR MY DAD-
I felt this one. My parents always found a way for us to eat even if they had to starve, ask people for money, or use change to buy food they managed but there were times where it got real scary. Schools don't realize how home life can affect things of grades.
I've been that kid before and it sucks to have to have people do that for you but it's also amazing and makes people feel loved and seen and supported❤️
It's really great that the student made the teacher know that the other kid was hungry *and* they said it quietly to not make the other person feel embarrassed in any way
I love this so cute. Sadly most teachers would not be this helpful or caring, you are amazing. And I don’t know about you but the “thank you my family will be great full for this”, sounded like a dubbed Anime❤❤❤❤

My teachers would always just say 'sounds like your family has some spending issues'. Even tho there's 5 of us and only my dad could get a decent enough job that would pay the rent and get enough food for my sisters and parents. I started buying my own food as soon as possible, but there wasn't much else we could do, and teachers just turned up their noses.
