Painting detail in an oil painting is a really fun part of the process. It's all about the accumulation of well placed, fine marks. Sometimes the line is blurred between not enough and too much. In this tutorial watch Andrew Tischler as he applies detail techniques to an En Plein Air painting. This scene depicts an old barn in Waitahuna, New Zealand.

You’re not only great painter you’re also great teacher.. thank you so much for being that clean 🤍✨
Thank you Andrew Tischler for your fine demonstration of how to paint an object. You show how easy it can be done.
Andrew, you are a king, in the details. Hug from Porto-Portugal.
I love using the dagger for distant trees on hills.
Wow! Glad I found you. You are an amazing Artist and Teacher. True treasure
This one is a winner and I look forward to the next one.
You do a great job of explaining what you were thinking as you were painting, and so helpful is you explain what colors you are mixing and why! Thank you :)
I love all your videos I'm learning so much . Can't thank you enough hope I don't run out of videos
I truly admire your audacity to paint as the masters did. You have a keen knowledge of color, technique and the ability to convey it to others. I have been struggling with my style most of my 52 years and you may have enliven my muse. Now I only have 2-3 years to make my proverbial mark, say the doctors. This gives me even more the desire to create. Now that I don't have to work anymore, I have all that time just to create. Stumbling across your channel has been a true Godsend to me, thank you Andrew. I hope you have a fruitful long life to leave yours. Martin Carlson
Jesus loves you
I am so very grateful for your instruction- thank you.😊
I like the detail and love the grass.
You r such a decent and amazing teacher
Please don't lament your use of detail! That's the artist you are... and your instruction has taught me to add detail to my oversimplified paintings. I could never find that instruction in college and it's a lost art.
You are graet andrew...i want to go back...to paint because of you...im inspired to paint..
Absolutely beautiful, I love the detail!
You love bristle daggers, and I love you. Thank you for another helpful video!
I’m speechless, I love painting with a lot of details. Please do more like this 😊
Your understanding of ligh is amazing.
You are such a talented artist. I'm so glad I found your videos. You explain so much! You are one of the best artists I've found, thank you for sharing.
Great video like always Andrew! Always looking forward to the next one.
Sending you love ❤️
Thanks for sharing your work. It allows me to see parts of a country I will never be able to visit. I hope to take your instructions and apply them to my paintings. Thanks again and have a blessed year.
I love this video! It’s so informative and INSPIRING! Thanks for doing it!
that was great, loved the end painting. Thanks for sharing your talent with us all
Thank you so much for another great video!
Really loved it. And I’m really appreciating this video method for sharing. Really hope to get some of your deeper tutorial vids. Thank you!
Always a good day when you drop a video. Very inspirational. Thanks for making these! I really mean it.
It's pleasure to watch you paint and listen to your comments. Beautiful painting.thanks for sharing.
Andrew, you're a brilliant painter, but this level of detail is almost taking the piss. Lots of love from a big fan, Phil xoxoxo
Absolutely, you must cross the line it’s the only way to learn where the line is! Without crossing it you risk playing it too safe, equally you may find that you like what you have produced beyond the line. Does that make sense?? Great to hear that you are getting more commissions. What you do is quality and that takes time. If it means that there is a wait to see your next video, then so be it. The commissions must come first. Thanks Andrew!
you are an amazing teacher! thank you for sharing Andrew!
this was really great... i really miss your paintings hehehe.. thank you for coming back and inspire again young artists...
Love the detail and in depth shading. So glad you're back and exposing us to your excitement.

Thanks again, this video is great, I'm enjoying every second, its giving me the push, to paint again and again.
Thanks for sharing, Andrew! Your videos are always useful!
You are a SURGEON with those brushes! Thank you for these videos. I adopted, “Working back to front” in my studies (amongst other techniques you’ve shared - I want to grab a hold of some oleogel next). This works best for me. I’m enjoying the learning process and have become less fearful/anxious of “putting myself out there.” Your methods and teachings make the most sense to me. And for that, I’m grateful.
Hi Andrew. So glad you’re back. Your comment about “crossing the line” just validated what I experienced with my painting the other day. It just wasn’t pleasing me after working on it (too long). So I backed off, took a good look, and realized it had too many details covering the whole scene. So I scraped off most of it and “generalized” the supporting areas, leaving details mainly for the center of interest. Voila! It is so much better, and your validating my decisions was very important to me. Crossing the line is a good lesson to absorb. Thanks!
Andrew, another awesome lesson. I could never understand why my highlights didn't "pop" the way they should until you explained about desaturating the layers underneath. Watching this video was the best 20 minutes I've spent all week.
A very nice painting job indeed. The whole affair recounted eloquently and in a calm manner, too. Kudos
Certainly one of my favourites! I am currently studying painting at university and love your videos
As always, LOVE you painting videos, so very helpful. It was particularly fascinating to see how just laying the graduation of colors, the details pop, and make a difference. I typically use acrylics, but most of the principles carry though. Watching the details take shape with each brushstroke is like watching magic. I will never tire of this! Thank you!
Love your work, commitment and communication technique
Andrew, you really inspire me every time ! Thanks for all of your efforts and your videos :-)
The details are wonderful, than again i paint details, tfs
Love your work Andrew and i am a big fan of detail, cross that line as often as you like. well done
For me this is one of my favorites. I am sure that I will re-watch this several more times.
Thanks for sharing.
I will also be watching a few more times!
@@connieh.4689 right like any learning experience, repetition is key to absorption! I have several painting DVD's that are almost worn out from "over-use".
Enjoyed this greatly! To see the transformation was inspiring and, like others below, I liked the detail and how it was achieved.
Awesome video Andrew. You truely are an inspiration to me and i cant wait for your next video. Good luck man
Hi Andrew- I learn a lot from your demonstrations and the comments you make as the video plays.I think your methodical process makes a lot of sense: a number of thumbnails to explore the composition possibilities and select one to develop the painting; then a colour study; then a grid-based scale-up to the final painting. Many thanks!
Best Wishes
Kevin Barry
Wow I love that painting! 😍
Huge fan here, Andrew! Your work and your words are sooooo inspiring!! I learn so much from your videos! Must have missed something on your studio setup regarding the photo gizmo thingy next to your workspace. God bless you and your family!
Fantastic done! Respect for this
It’s absolutely beautiful 🙂💐and i love the details in your painting
Love your video's, and the way you paint and explain. You are a fabulous artist! I am looking forward to your next painting video.
The motive is stunning and a must-paint!
You sir, are a magician...and it is a definite yes for the detail - love it.
Love your videos!
thanks
Thank you for sharing all your techniques and thoughts as you paint. I really like all the detail. I really enjoy all your videos, I am learning so much from you!
You are a gifted person. Your work is amazing and I admire your skill. Thank you for sharing and thank you for adding beauty to the world for the rest of us to enjoy!
Man, you are one of the best painters of youtube and the world! Thank you for your work and for the videos. God Bless you!
Wow 👌🏻👌🏻 thank you so much for making these videos 😁😁
Time is everything, and since giving myself time to work a piece(I fired an art coach 9 months in... no pressure now and it's amazing!)....I HAVE NEVER BEEN BETTER, or GROWN better! Thank you for your detail tips, I especially get wonderful feels for the descriptions of the colors used in combination....woot!!!
The end result was worth "crossing the line"! Enjoyed watching another of your masterpiece come to life.
I think it's really inspiring how even though to most painters you are an absolute master, you seem to have never stopped learning ever since you started painting, you're always pointing out mistakes in your painting and trying to learn from them.
Watching people paint in oil is one of my favorite things! It's so relaxing and satisfying. When it comes to details it all depends on what you're going for and how you do it and that's going to be different for everyone. Like you said, unless you push the boundaries of looseness and detailedness (totally a word) you're not going to find out what you want. There's a lot of pressure out there to either make your paints really loose (or super detailed though I haven't heard that so much) but you shouldn't let that direct where you go unless that's actually what you want to do. Detailed or loose, I think this painting looks amazing.
So beautiful ... really enjoy watching your videos
What a talent and what an ability to explain the process!
It's fascinating to watch, Thank you
Really enjoy your work, your a tallented Artist with a strong thurst for learning to inprove you're abilities.
Thanks
You inspires me a lot and I was waiting for your video and it came I really love paintings and you are master in landscapees and portrait your best in your type or category
I learn a lot from you. Was on the south island in Feb. Christ Church, Barrytown, Westport. Really picturesque place
I am having a bad day but I watched this on my lunch break and now I feel better. I love the subjects of your paintings. I didn't know New Zealand looked like that. I'm from a river valley in the Midwest US and it looks very similar. I always feel comforted by scenes of hills and old barns. Also glad you changed position of horse head. It looks much better.
I'm so glad you're back!!! I'm from Brazil and I always learn more watching your vídeos... Thanks for sharing with us your talent
It looks amazing. I feel your pain. I can’t help myself with the detail either. Then you feel like it’s never ending!
much appreciated, so enjoy you process.
its almost like a journy.
and the best part i took from it "cross that lines".
thank you andrew, you are amazing artist.

FANTASTIC
I really enjoyed this video and always learn from them. Thank you. Love your painting, you are so talented.
As always, another super video about painting. Very useful, I find grass so hard to paint. And there are so few instructions out there about painting detalis of the grass. This was very useful.
Wow. Brilliant explanation and broken down into parts, this was a great demo lesson. Usually you are but this raised the bar! Thanks
That last landscape of the barn and horse and fence! I could look at that all day, way to go with the colors, i love the dioxazine and thalo green addition, just beautiful! Hope we will see some thalo blue in that shadow on the top of your barns one day 😊
I just found your channel trying to get back into a painting routine after a 4 year lull. I've been very uninspired due to my surroundings but determined to make some changes so I can paint again. I bought a shipping container and will be transforming it into an art studio in the spring.Your channel is the one I chose to inspire me. So happy I found you . Thank you.
You are an inspiration. I will be looking closer at shadows thanks to your work. Thanks
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, Andrew! I don't know about anyone else, but as for me, I love the meticulous details. Although they can be exhausting, it makes a painting more interesting IMHO. When I visit art museums, I'm always most in awe of the brush strokes of the the detailed paintings. I find it inspirational. Yet, I understand the desire to loosen up after years of painting a certain way. Still, I very much appreciate and enjoy your methodical process AND how you show the gradual progression from the beginning to finish near the end of the video. That's so helpful to see. I think I'm going to start doing that so I can track my progress. It might even be helpful to have as a reference, if I get stuck at some point. Thanks for sharing another great video with such great content. You've given me lots to think about. As always, looking forward to the next one! Take care of yourself and family. Enjoy the snow!
Very much agree with everything you are saying here. And me too!!
Great work
You make it look so easy! Haha i love your work soo much
You are a master.
Love every videos of yours
Hi Andrew watching your hi speed tutorial is magical, great work thank you for sharing your amazing talent
I agree totally your comments when is enough is enough? Loose detail allows the brain to join the dots.regards Larry
Andrew Tischler, I love your paintings and I'm always impressed after the first step, I want to yell "Don't touch it anymore!". But your detailing is so awesome,,, that was my passion but I'm older now and life is short and spontaneous, friends do not let friends over-detail, lol,,, or cut their hair but you pull that off well, still a badass!
Beautiful
Awesome Andrew
Not for nothing, but I was happy when I got a notification from UA-cam about this video. Andrew you haven't post no video I was scared for a moment, happy you are back. Amazing video
Very interesting and helpful. I have also found recently that the basic layer needs to be dark so that the highlights stand out better and create a stronger contrast which creates a more lifelike visual effect. I look forward to your next video.
Mil gracias por este nuevo video. Estaba esperando con ansias poder seguir de nuevo tus instrucciones y continuar aprendiendo. Un saludo desde Colombia.
Great video once again!
Love it!
Man that was great to watch. I actually began painting the minute i finished watching it. Keep up the great work!!
