Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Due to the supply shortage, the snow that was ordered in February got delivered today. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Great video. Keep on keeping on. I’ve had the bacon king combo… excellent choice. My favorite burger besides my own grilled burgers.
🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣😜😜😜
I didn't order it. Please return to sender. The snow that is. I will take the burger though!
my rain still hasn't arrived
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😆
Have you ever thought about doing a video on what maintenance/parts cost on the equipment? For example oil changes, cost of tires/tracks or what it cost to operate a tractor per hour. Thanks and cool channel
Cole the corn star did one once. Was pretty good. But no two operations are the same at all.
Good idea 👍
Too much lol

Living a life of luxury is like a dream for some people and for others it’s constant reality, the key is having financial stability and strength but the question is how to
Crypto trading is the best investment anyone could get into. As it could make you rich in a blink of an eye.
I’ve always wanted to trade crypto but got confused with the fluctuations in price
Trading options with Mr Charles Wilson is a good chance to make money and start paying your bills. It’s the best opinion to get out of debt
@@vincentdavid5809 Wow I know Mr Charles Wilson. I met him at a conference in carlifornia 2019 where he introduced us his business strategy, he helped me cover my student loans
I also trade with Mr Charles Wilson, and i must say he makes money making seem a whole lot easier right now I’m a single parent and i pay the bills comfortably since i met Charles Wilson he’s absolutely amazing and I’d recommend him for any novice in crypto.
Hey zack, I’m a heavy duty mechanic and I’ve had to deal with dead batteries like that. Since you replaced them and you have a disconnect for it, I would hook a multimeter onto the alternator and check for AC voltage if the AC voltage is to high it ruins batteries I’ve seen it on equipment and trucks it’ll stump them best of us. Throw a new alternator on the truck see if that fixes your issues. Best of luck from Maine
Best comment I've seen about dead batteries. I know very little about it, but finally you're someone that suggests analyzing rather than just throwing parts at it.
Would the alternator test machine at the parts store run the same numbers?
Alternators make AC but the output is DC due to the rectifier. Biggest cause to batteries going bad is too low charging voltage, make sure you have at least 14.2-14.5 volt. And Zack, keep your batteries clean...dirt and dust mixed with salt from the roads will drain batteries as salt is conductive, use water and soap for cleaning.
You see how slow starter takes to get going and does this while inside warm. I would look at connections, cable ends and bad cables first. I'm heavy duty tech too at Pete dealership. I'm sure they are original cables it was built with and they don't last forever. AC voltages you do know alt puts out DC current
@@jbbuzzable Guess you missing the part ""throw a new alternator on the truck see if that fixes your issues""
You should swap a gear reduction starter onto that semi! Canadian with lots of cold starting CAT experience. The gear reduction starter has more torque and spins the engine over faster making it easier on the batteries. I am not a parts guy, but on every truck that starts like yours I have done this swap and it has helped my situation a whole bunch.
🔅W⚓
I’ve been saying that for years, he’s liked my comments before so I know He’s seen them. But I’ve had a friend who bought batteries every winter and dealt with the same issue after cranking for 10 seconds. I could crank my 6nz for 2-3 mins with 3 year old batteries and still have plenty of cranking juice.

Get a multimeter and check the alternator. Yeah you put new batteries in, but if the alternator isn't charging like it's supposed to, the life of the batteries will be short.
I just figured out why the dogs bark, it’s the high pitched squeal (beep) the turning over the keys makes the tractors and trucks create when starting. My dog hates it through the phone 😂😂
I feel your pain with the back problem,
I have the same kink issue in my back slash shoulder blade from playing golf after a few months off.
The starter has an incredible amount of “drag”. If it was a charging issue you’d know it so you can rule that out. After a hard start next time, quickly do a heat check on the connections and cables with a infrared thermometer. If nothing is in excess, replace the starter. We’ve had this issue several times over the years and even rebuilt the starters and had the same issue. At that point, some starters aren’t rebuildable and newer starters are smaller and gear reduced. I have no doubt this will fix your issue.
🔅W⚓
This needs an upvote. This wasn't a battery issue (this time) since the starter worked.. it ''just'' couldn't get the engine to fire up
@@lunasilvermoon2283 since it cranked over just fine after charging the batteries, I say it is a battery problem.
I suspect that one of the batteries may be mismatched, so the better batteries are basically constantly trying to charge the battery with a low cell.
@@ke6gwf It is possible, that one of the batteries is dead, or more likely, soon-to-be-dead, but I don't think this is a battery problem. I think it's more like bad connection problem. Ground problems are the most common problems with 12 or 24 volts DC, so I'd check first the ground cables are well connected to the frame (no rust) and that the bolts are nice and tight on the frame as well as on the main switch. Then the same with the starter, cables off, clean the connectors and then cables back nice and tight. I guess, when the batteries were changed, that the battery connectors are checked, that they are not broken or loose and that the cables are fine. Then there is a possibility that the main switch is half dead or rusty from the inside and that causes voltage shortage. Hope that they find the problem and let us know the cause. :)
@@KuutioMetri I agree that bad connections are common, but a bad connection won't cause the batteries to lose charge while sitting, which is what's happening here. The fact that once they are charged back up it starts fine shows It's a low voltage issue, not a bad connection issue.
There is one scenario where a bad connection could do this, and that is if only one battery has a bad connection, so it's not getting properly charged during operation, and then it drains the other two batteries while sitting.
It makes perfect sense that Zac wants an electric Polaris Ranger. He is VERY accustomed to plugging in his vehicles to recharge their batteries!
Zack, Follow the grounds from the battery to the truck frame. Take (or cut) the bolt off holding the ground to the frame and clean both the frame and ground cable fastener. We had the same exact same problem with one of our R-Model Macks after $pending a fortune throwing parts at it.... Getting to the grounds was a pain in the ass, but after we did the work the truck never fails to spin over no matter how long it sits.. That was 10 years ago, its still going today with no problems.. BTW, I love the Between The Rows Bristol Race Series!
Every video feels like a conversation. It's authentic. Not rehearsed. Love that about how you talk to the camera and how the editing is done. Keep up the good work on both ends. Hope you guys have good weather this year to make up for all of the inflation.
It’s good that u post these videos Zach gives me something to watch while I’m in the hospital
@@aservantofthelord2820 heaven I got people up there like my grandma grandpa uncle John and others so I’m pretty sure I’d go to heaven
Man, do I love spring. Spring is awesome. Spring is a fun day....
Solar panel 12 v 10 watt or higher will do the trick for the batteries...suction cups to window and even can be plugged into cigg lighter in cabs...keeps em topped off even in cold weather.
30$ to 70$ on amazon or online most places
Long time fan ...keep up good work
My wife and I work at CVEC in benson and love to see you come in to deliver corn.
You know you live in the Midwest when it’s 60 and sunny one day and then the next day you get 30 inches of snow. Just happened in North Dakota
One thing you could try with those KW's, you have room for four batteries in there, that'll give you more cranking power. Did that to mine years ago and it helped in cold.
That Ranger looks nice. Thanks for bringing me along while you haul in your grain. I hope you can get into the fields sooner than later.
Not sure if you have heard of the kussmaul auto eject system but they are a really nice system that lots of fire departments use to keep their trucks charged up. We just got a few of them for around the shop and they are really nice. Plug it in when your done next day you go to start the truck the plug pops out and your on your way.
You need some rock in that mud yard! Keep up the great videos!
Not sure if it's possible due to having to keep parts of the business private but I would love to see what it's like to organize the fields and set a plan for the growing season. Seems it would be fascinating to see that layer of running a farm. Maybe with clever editing we could get a glimpse without revealing too much.
Basically what was beans last year will be corn this year and vice versa...however it depends if they decide on more of one than the other
Since they only have 2 crops its pretty easy. Bad for soil, good to save work:-)
Zach, you gotta hold your tongue right when you start the trucks. Each one has it's own requirement; in the cheek (L or R), pushing on your teeth, out of mouth a bit and to the left, right or straight out, teeth touching or not touching. There will be a combination that works, I promise you.
We still love watching all that you guys do...never think we are bored with it...we just like hanging out with you ,your dad and jim
Yes, range is important on electric vehicles, but you do have to change the way you handle your "refuel" stops and then there's usually not an issue. You're not going to drive 80 miles with it constantly. It's going to be zipping in and out of fields and then back to the shop. Just hook it up every time you park it back at the shop and you'll never have to worry about battery charge.
It’s the tarp and traps that are killing the batteries. They constantly draw even with a disconnect because usually they’re hard wired to the battery box. Unhook your electrical connections to the trailers when they’re sitting and I’ll bet you’ll see a change.
Don't have a farm nor all the equipment that you have...just enjoying seeing what you all do in the day of the life of a farm family.
Thanks for all you do and keeping the country dependent on ya'll!
good to see your dad back it will be go time before you know it I wish you guys a safe and successful spring thanks for taking your time and shareing it with us very much appreciate it
On trucks when they're out in the cold I never let off the key until it starts to roll on its own. Otherwise I'm dragging cords and chargers and just struggling as usual. The cold needs to leave this year I'm so tired of it as well.
You could always send the rain & Snow to the Walkers.
Hopefully the Polaris comes with a decent fire suppression system otherwise it could get interesting 😏
Make sure everything grounding to the batteries has to go through the disconnect switch, if there's an ECM ground or electric tarp ground still grounded directly to the batteries it will still drain the batteries down.
Ok I have to apologize. I've been slacking and saw today I am a couple months behind on watching your videos. So I'm now in the process of getting caught up. As always great videos and your still my favorite farmer. God Bless you and family.
I've never seen you turn the battery shut off on or off also need to check the start or the key switch great video as always zach stay safe
If you haven’t, consider checking the positive cable that links all 3 batteries together and the cable that goes to the starter. I though my semi was due for new batteries but the link cable was green and nasty causing bad connections. Replaced the cable and now the truck starts like top, even with the 4 year old batteries.
That Polaris looks awesome! I didn't even know they had on electric one and when I saw your IG story of your pinning the throttle and watching how fast it launched in the dirt.... that sold me on it! This is the first electric anything I've actually been excited about and considered.
Great video as usual! Love the fact you are not worried or afraid of electric vehicles. Please try and get a new electric tractor or 2. For testing of course....I am interested in seeing how that technology is going. Batteries are heavy and tractors like being heavy, right? Load up the batteries!!! You would probably need 480v power for charging.
I'm glad that awesome sneeze was left in!
We’ve seen you Seed and Harvest before too, doesn’t mean we are bored of it. If you had hour long videos of everything you do, would be fine with me. Get yourself a head mount and do your work. 👍🏻🤘🏻
🔅W⚓
sometimes he just wants to listen to music on those drives
After the truck has been sitting for a while, take the ground inter tie cables off so the batteries aren't connected anymore, and test the voltage on each battery individually. I suspect that you may have one bad battery that is draining the others because it is at a lower voltage, so they are constantly trying to charge it.
If you have a battery load tester even better.
If all 3 don't test the same after being connected to each other, then either put a new set in, making sure that the manufacturer date codes match on all of them, (if one tests defective you may be able to return them under warranty),or when parking them for a while, remove the ground cables between the batteries so they can't draw each other down.
Put Onyx behind the wheel of the Ranger, he knows how to drive everything to the max! Have him share his thoughts.
@10:29 I worked on the remodel at the courthouses in Benson. All the Jury stands and judge stand and such have Kevlar in them they were super heavy to haul up stairs
We cleaned out the last of our bins this morning & it was cold. It was about 26F with snow flurries. It was 75F last Saturday & then about 30 degrees colder the next day. This weather sucks. We have been ready to go for a while but all a guy can do is wait I guess.
Thanks for the great video you do a great job on your videos keep up the great work you do on your families farm
Zach, Have them put the Ranger batteries in place of the Exide truck batteries!
Here in NEBRASKA , the land of a million mud holes, we take a single section of spike harrow behind 4 wheeler n make farmer cement, smoothed out slop that freezes hard n smooth, always thaws drier than when frozen!!
I couldnt live there.
We've been in up to the mid 80's for the last month. And we only hit the freezing pointing maybe twice all winter.
While I love Texas springs the summers require lots of shade and a cold drink....of your choice.
Your tarp system may be the problem may be drawing the power. Try unhookin the cord.
Im almost convinced he's punking us with clips of snow from winter with snow. The spring in the north has been freaking insane this year. Sunday is MAY!
10/10 on that dad sneeze. I pride myself on scaring everyone in the room when i sneeze
Have you tried battery tenders (minders) for your batteries? The work well for my vehicles. I use CTEK like Jay Leno does.
Always makes me feel better knowing there’s other places where winter just won’t let go
Ain’t it satisfying to let a sneeze fly like that? I do it as often as I can. 😎
Glad your getting plenty of rain for those crops
This was great!! And I really appreciate your opinion on the electric Ranger! I guess there ARE days farming that are not spine tingling Alfred Hitchcock suspense lacking, but they are still days on the farm. And I enjoy them all. Thanks Zack, I enjoyed this one a lot.
Talked to your FBN guy. He wants to take me out to lunch. ;). I have called a few places when it’s any “day” during loading. Only showed up to closed once.
Electric is getting better. Bought electric chain saw to cut fallen branches, stuff edge of fields.
I didn't hear the German Shepherd start when you turned on the Ranger??? 🤣
Must be COVID-related weather changes. Time to mask up, isolate and frighten our kids. Or move to a farm in west-central Minnesnowda!! Best wishes for a great planting season when it does finally arrive!!
You need to get some time in that Polaris. I'm not familiar with the product, but as far as performance and maintenance go EVs will kick the socks off of internal combustion.
my oldest son just his 2022 ev nissan leaf which he ordered 6 month ago and he is in love with it NO MORE TRIPS TO THE GAS STATION which is over $4.00 gallons now in wisconsin. now my wife wants one so happy wife happy life.
I drive for a small trucking company out of Indiana and we’re dedicated to Bayer seed productions. We haul pro boxes, big bags and small bags of mainly corn and soybeans. Sometimes when I’m hauling small bags I’ll see a pallet or two of wheat or sorghum. We don’t haul to farms since my boss tries to keep us from hauling around a pallet Jack lol. We mainly haul from the storage warehouses to the seed plants. Mainly Monsanto and Remington seed plants. Fun gig
I bought one of those kinetics a while back, we use them or thermal hog hunting here in Texas. So many people hunt off of buggies now those pigs have gotten buggy smart when they hear a buggy they haul ass. This machine is real quiet you can drive up and get them in the back of the head if you want to.
i have always found that 3 batteries just never seem to be enough when its cold and there is a big difference in cold cranking amps.
Closed on Good Friday Imagine that ! Where I used to work GF was a recognized holiday but Easter Sunday wasn't .
Dear Polaris, leave the Ranger and let Zach torture test it for us that might be interested in purchasing one!
I totally agree. I suspect he hasn't used performance mode.
If Polaris is somehow reading this I agree. I am not ready to make the purchase yet, but would really like Zach's longer term opinion.
I am liking the idea, just not sure if I trust it yet.
Zac where I used to work used to pull out the 4th battery out of their trucks and they had battery issues as well. Look into adding 1 more for a few more cranking amps. My truck eats batteries every year in AZ heat.
You guys need to send some of the rain to Sonne Farms in SD, they really need it.:)
When all else fails, there’s always lunch at a gas station. Peaches to peachade
i think the reason your dog barks when your in the tractor is the sound of the electrical and the electric fuel pump when you turn the key on
Great video Zach, thanks, ranger is cool, EV s are becoming more realistic.
If I were to use something like that for hunting I would definitely want an electric one
That's a good ranger for sneaking up on deer!
One doesn’t experience self transcendence, the illusion of self only dissipates~🎈
Been a super wet rainy Indiana season so far. Getting it slowly
Been watching you for 4 years and love every video!
I laugh every time your shepherd talks 🤣 I have a 13 month old shepherd named Ruckus ( he lives up to his name) that sounds exactly the same? And has a very dirty under carriage to! Keep up the great work 👍
Roughly how much did it cost to update your planter to exact emerge? I got the same planter and it is in need of help lol
You need an Interstate battery sponsor. Just an idea.
Dont feel bad. Chats batteries were dead the other day also. And our knew ones. Luckily as u I keep they battery charger at handy location never put away. Even designated power cords
Zach have you made a video on the New camper. The beautiful Super-C in the shop?
Zach a good mechanic would do an amp draw test and pull fuses and relays till you find the circuit with the bad or most draw. Our you can test mili volts across the fuse, with the switch off, its called a voltage drop test and there are charts available to extrapolate the amperage draw on that fused circuit. Question is your FM two way radio wired so that it is on all the time? Or does it shut off with the switch?
Considering the difficulties of keeping batteries charged on ANYTHING on the farm, I can’t believe Zack would even consider having an all electric Ranger on the farm!
Always enjoy your videos Zack, keep them coming
That old international on the road was beautiful 🤙
Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable.
Thanks for showing us the Ranger. Looks like a nice machine. To me electric depends on how you are going to use it. To me on the farm I would think a gas might be more logical. But might not if all your fields are close by. Nice machine. Thanks Zach for telling us about it.
Yes do understand that frustration with this time of year. Mud and rain and snow and cooler temps. Not good. And everyone wants in the field and can’t because of the field conditions. Hard to just wait and not get planting going. Just frustrating.
Back to the dead batteries. Has to be something drawing down the batteries. Suggest running a meter on the main wire loom to see if there is a power drain. The other thing is are your batteries getting charged when using the truck. Is the truck electric system charging???! If not the batteries drain down. Got to be something draining those batteries.
Understand your dad wanting to be in the field. Think most farmers are wanting to get going. Make up for lost time once the weather is better.
Thanks for the video. You all take care and be safe.
Looking forward to the next video.
Thanks for everything Zach.
Thanks to Becky for editing.
The Iowa farm boy.
Check your ground cable on your semi. I just went thru the same thing. New ground cable from battery to starter fixed it. If it has one. Cable was hard as a rock
Awesome videos. Fighting the same problem in Saskatchewan spring just doesn’t want to show up this year
Snow on the ground down here in southern Ontario.
Normaly planting by now.

I enjoy watching your videos. Keep it between the ditches and keep them coming.
I have a question about those seed boxes. You said it had about 45 units of seed. Is a unit and a bushel the same thing?
this spring has been brutal so much snow in the last couple weeks.
I know you've accepted the battery issues, but what about a solar panel battery maintainer? They're pretty cheap and you take pretty good of your trucks, I bet you it would work....
Hello from Moosomin ,Saskatchewan, Canada Great videos thanks for sharing.
We just finished up planting corn today here in Maryland
Guess us down in the Bible Belt aren’t the only ones that close on Good Friday.
Sorry for all the darn messes...N.Missouri not much planted here...But some how I will be done with corn today. I owe that to chisel plowed ground that dried out..
Thanks mate, great content.
good job hauling corn and the demo of the ranger
We went from record breaking 88degrees over weekend to 45 day and freeze warning 27 tonight Tuesday, crazy weather! Northwestern Ohio weather!
I'm with ya. Fellow Northwest Ohioan.
Just wanted to let you know. I got all my crops in yesterday.
Had a similar battery issue and ended up removing the low voltage disconnect. It’s located down on the drives side foot panel to the left of the clutch. Haven’t had an issue with voltage since!
I'm convinced your corner of the woods is where batteries go to die. Our temps (upstate NY) aren't too dissimilar from yours and I think I can count on one hand how many times I've had to hook up a charger over the past year. Weird.
Aside from freezing dead cells, batteries actually last longer in the cold.
