I was thinking about cycling from NYC to Philadelphia, but that NJ section looks terrible.

It’s not that pleasant no... Maybe try to cross the bridge when there is not that much traffic, on a Sunday maybe? Or take a train for that part of the trip. I really loved the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail.

The route has been changed. It avoids Newark. You should have taken the ferry from Rockaway, it's a nice ride. Then take the ferry into Jersey City or Staten Island.

We actually have taken both ferries on our trip, the one to Staten Island (where we camped a few nights) and to Rockaway (where we did some glamping). Really nice! On the boat to Rockaway we had to hang up our bicycles though (which are way heavier than racing bikes). The crew wasn't that careful with the bikes, and someone's bike actually fell down, while we were flying to Rockaway. Fergal ran over, the crew hadn't noticed. So we didn't want to bring our bikes on the boat again. Really enjoyed the ride in New York, especially cycling on Coney Island. But that bridge was crazy. Good to know the route has been changed!

@@Fietsvlogger The ferries are a fun ride but the capacity is limited. The hook system is not very good. The new route takes you from New Jersey over the Bayonne Bridge into Staten Island. Then over the Goethals bridge back to New Jersey. Both big bridges have seperated bike lanes. I have yet to explore the southern Jersey side. I think riding some of the Eurovelo paths would be more pleasant.
