Actually Girl Meets Rileytown has an even deeper message:
At the time, Rowan Blanchard actually was being bullied because people didn't like her character. They made this episode to address the issue directly, and all the emotions Rowan was displaying are 100% genuine.
Her bully is never shown because, like you said, she's breaking the 4th wall, and addressing the real bully: the audience.

As much as I loved how Thats So Raven tackled the racism episode, I also loved how this one episode of Smart Guy called "Get a Job" handled it before that. Yvette applies for a job at a clothing store and actually does get the job but the store manager keeps making her white friend Nina follow black people around the store. They try to catch her by having Mo, who is black, and Mackey, who is white, pretend to be customers, Mo just looking around the store while Mackey pretends to steal everything in sight. When Yvette tries to confront the racist manager about this, she gets fired. Eventually, Yvette calls the owner of the company, who is a black man, and he comes into the store disguised as a customer. The manager follows him around the store obsessively and he eventually calls her on it and reveals who he is. If I remember right, He fires the manager and rehires Yvette

I'm autistic and I really liked the autism episode if Girl Meets World. I know some people hate the way some of the characters act to hearing Farkle might have it, but I saw it as them not knowing enough about it, and the whole episode was about teaching them more about it. I was a little disappointed when it turned out Farkle didn't have it, but liked that Smackle did. I found her a very relatable character, especially with the hugging thing. The way she reacts to people hugging her is the same way I react to it.

I'm autistic and feel the exact same way. People are offended at how the kids react, but that's just it. They're kids. They haven't had enough exposure to it to know about it. They just hear autism as a "bad thing" that makes Farkle different. And that's super realistic and relatable, at least for me. Middle school is a hard time for everyone and you're still finding yourself. I also feel the kids being mad about Farkle maybe having Asperger's gets made up for when as soon as they find out about Smackle's autism, they immediately accept her in the group. Now that they've learned about it, they know it's totally normal and acceptable. I feel like people get mad at Riley Maya and Lucas for reacting the way they do which completely overshadows the message of the episode.

What is incredibly sad about that one Good Luck Charlie episode is it came at a cost. It caused the series to be canceled (or was one of the main contributing factors) because hateful organizations such as "One Million Moms" were angry about the LGBTQIA+ representation. Not to mention the actors of the show received death threats. It was a big sacrifice on the show's part, but if it had not been for everyone involved in this episode...we probably would have never gotten something like Cyrus's story line from Andi Mack and much more representation on Disney Channel later on (looking at Lumity from Owl House). Good Luck Charlie does not get enough respect for this.

And the hype with that "different" was empty hype. It wasn't that great of a show at all.. Wasn't there a damn communism episode too? Sydney to the Max isn't perfect by any means, but the show does a good job finishing what Andi Mack started by centering on subjects the show also brought to life like microagressions or Black identity. Or subjects none of the past kids shows talked about like periods. This show, Secrets of Sulphur Springs and the cartoon shows are the only current running shows that give me hope for the channel going forward.
Edit: I've heard from some UA-camrs that the only current running Disney Channel shows they care about are animated, but even now in my 20s, I've always believed that live action kids shows can be just as funny and exciting and groundbreaking as animated kids shows. And I wish I wasn't the only person who has that opinion after watching the shows I just mentioned AND The Astronauts on Nickelodeon. I agree with almost everything on this list but I honestly don’t think the autism episode was a breakthrough at all. On the contrary, I think it took a step back. (Forgive me while I rant a bit)
First, the episode is treated with that very generic story plot of person thinks they have condition - everyone is scared at first and tells them they’re still loved, episode ends with them finding out they don’t have it but now have a greater understanding. Yet this doesn’t normalize neurordivergence or even explain what it is. It’s more a case for drama then anything else.
Second is their reactions: mainly Maya’s. She seems strangely defensive in this episode. I wondered if this was a fearful response stemming from Farkle’s past issues with self-judgment and bullying. But the episode never outwardly addresses this and it feels like a major mis-opportunity to show the worries of being diagnosed. Instead they just keep saying “You’re the same old Farkle and we love you just the way you are,” which feels rather half-baked and ingenuine for such a deep topic.
Lastly: Smackle being autistic. Look I am all for canon characters being canonically LGBTQ, Neurodivergent, or having mental illness. I think it is a great idea to have an official character with stated ADHD or Autism onscreen as a model for young viewers. But despite their intentions, this just felt like another way to feed into the stigma. An emotionally distant genius that almost acts robotic in their social interactions, who hates physical affection and takes everything literally is the one with autism. What’s even worse is most of these traits are used as comedic gags in previous episodes and now are taken seriously...? Yes, *some* people with autism have sensory issues and trouble in social settings, but not all. And using this common, widely known type for your only canon autistic character crosses over into overgeneralizing. Plus, the fact this revelation was never brought up again almost makes this episode non-existent.
I am eagerly awaiting an episode that readdresses these topics in a more accurate and authentic way. But until then, I don’t think we have good enough representation for neurodivergence.

you seriously think people don't treat autistic people differently? The weird looks you get when one of your tics or quirks acts up in a socially unacceptable way??? The way people just totally isolate and shun you if you don't look or act the way you're "supposed to"? I hate it when media and watch mojo lists try to toot their own horns about how "much more accepting" they are of people when it's complete and utter BS. I have autism and the NT people around me still make me feel like just as much of a freak and social outcast as they made me feel like years ago. The only difference is now there's actually a word now for why I am the way I am, it doesn't mean that people in society are any more "accepting" it just means that they managed to come up with a label for the freaks like us. That's why they call it a "disorder" or a "disability" because in their eyes your existence is wrong and you will never be normal or socially acceptable like them just because you were born with quirks and qualities you can't control. That is why I hate everything about society and why it's makes me so mad when they try to pretend like they're soooooo much more accepting now when they're really not. They have all these messages in media and TV shows about how everyone matters and people come in all shapes and sizes and conditions and blah blah blah but they don't mean it. It's all for entertainment purposes. You will still get the same weird looks and social shunning as always, and nothing will ever change that.

It’s okay to be unique, the world would be quite boring if everyone was the same. Don’t let society dictate how you feel about yourself.
    Stay positive! ❤️

I grew up with autism and dealt with bullying for it. Because I would misunderstand something or react to something in a unexpected way. Sadly the schools I went up until high school didnt handle this well. They used to punish me because it was easier to do that then punish a class full of kids. I would spend almost half of the school year in school suspension being treated like I did something. The school sadly didnt have a better option. They did have a teacher with me all the time which got me teased more.
It wasn't until high school when people stopped bullying me for being different. It was kind of weird for me because it's what I was used to. It took me awhile to let my guard down around people. But even with that I still avoided people. But that had to do more with my autism and not liking being in big groups of people.

After watching this I remembered that one of my earliest exposures to the lgbtq+ community was that episode of Good Luck Charlie, at the time it didn’t even cross my mind that being gay or apart of the community could even be a “bad” thing (it’s not) I just laughed and moved on. That’s why I don’t understand why some parents get mad and say that their children wouldn’t even understand the concept of gay relationships, because they do, it’s the parents who choose not to

I was diagnosed with autism and adhd when I was about 5. I used to be a totally different kid back then. I didn’t know how to talk, walk, do things a normal kid did. As I grew up, my autism started to decrease. Today I’m 17 and I’m *almost* normal, I still get panic attacks sometimes and I have some problems but it’s ok. I’m a human, that’s all it matters.
And I can relate to farkle and smackle in many ways. I’m a nerd, can’t socialize properly with people, and I hate eye contact, it makes me uncomfortable when people look me in the eye. I’m also gay. Known people or guys who I have a crush touching/hugging me makes me feel protected. I get uncomfortable if unknown people did the same thing.
I hate discrimination. Being a gay or autistic is hard enough, imagine being both

I'm also gay and autistic. Although I'm pretty outgoing and social so most people know I'm around because I assert my presence. I definitely have these weird things though - like I'll be thinking about something and looking around and it will be in someone's view point and they'll think I'm looking at them when I wasn't until they made contact with my face.

For many years I have not spoken up about my bullying because I spoke up in 1st grade and was called a snitch. That name stuck with me for years. It made me not want to stand up for myself. I am only now going to therapy and speaking up. My bully has not been suspended though because his parents have donated a lot of money to the school for years. And my friends didn’t even believe I had depression when I told them because I am always fake smiling.

6:53 reminds me of the family feud scene in _Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2,_ when Peter "Star-Lord" Quill calls Rocket Raccoon a raccoon, even though the latter only looks like one.
Rocket: [referring to their one-inch rescuer] Well, if he got closer, I’m sure he'd be much larger.
Peter: Yeah, that's how eyesight works, you stupid raccoon.
Rocket: Don't call me a raccoon!
Peter: I'm sorry, I took it too far. I meant trash panda.
    Rocket: Is that better?
    Drax: I don't know.
Peter: It's worse. It's so much worse.

I disagree. Although there were some great moments back then I think nowadays we have a lot of representation on serious topics like teen pregnancy, gun violence, vaping, periods, lgbtqia+, and etc. Just off the top of my head, I can think of Andi Mack, The Owl House, Ravens Home, Sydney to the Max, and more. Disney has definitely gotten to be more open and representative than in the past (although they still have some work to do).

I'm just now realising why I'm so different from my brothers, their friends, my friends, etc. It's because, while I watched most of these shows as a young kid and learned these lessons through so many other tv shows that weren't in this video, my family and friends didn't. Even as I got older I continued watching these, and I think that's why I am so much more aware of the racism, body shaming, bullying, stereotyping, etc. in the world.
Some of my friends and family have made comments that have offended me just because they are saying a girl doesn't look pretty, she doesn't look right for a part in a tv show, and once my dad got mad at me because I watched Love, Victor without his permission.
It makes me really happy to know that there are young kids out there who don't feel at a loss for having two moms or two dads, and instead make all the other kids jealous that they have two and the other kids only have one.
