    AUS8 shouldn’t be the steel used for that price range. If it was a 50 to 80 USD price, then why not. But for that price you can get a much better steel.

    I own and use several of your APO-1 knives. Mine are the earlier and slightly smaller APO-1 and the APO-1H versions. the knives have served me very well in the field. The design and craftsmanship of these knives is excellent. No one knife design is perfectly suited for any and all tasks, but for a one tool option, the APO-1 is an outstanding choice, in my opinion. Your explanation of the choices you made for the design, blade material, handle material, and sheath are very well presented in this video. I highly recommend this knife to anyone looking for a good survival knife that will last a lifetime. My next purchase will be the new APO-1S.

    It looks like a well thought out design. Seems to have good functionality. One suggestion I would make is to have the option of high visibility orange G10 scales. I have seen people in the field set set knives on the ground after finishing a task. Then have to make a frustrating,time consuming search for their knife. I have even seen folks unable to find it again. High visibility orange makes this less likely. One reason so many survival practitioners wrap high vis color tape around tools and kits.

      I agree. The fashion for "tactical" green and black is for military purposes, but for any outdoors enthusiast, a high-viz color is essential for critical items of kit, e.g. knives, keys, torches, compasses, phones and GPS among others. A second small torch is essential in case the main one falls and goes out.

    You sold me on buying your knife. I've never heard such a well thought out, presented and honest explanation of a perfectly designed knife in my life. You have created what I would have to say is everything I want in a knife. I'm quite familiar with aus-8 steel and you described it's qualities exactly as I would. Bottom line, it's easy to sharpen and edge retention is not bad and it doesn't rust. Aus-10 holds a little better edge, but it's almost a toss up. I like the width of the sloped tip, it'll take a beating without thoroughly and quickly destroying a baton. Nice job Lilly. Nice attention on the redesign of the handle. Can't wait to get one.

  • @LILEE376
    @LILEE376 3 роки тому +1

    I am not a knife expert, but it looks like (for me) that every part of it designed based on pure logic. The blade thick and long enough for batoning but it's not too long to loose the ability of using it ergonomically in daily tasks. Stainless steel is the ideal material for survival knives. For chopping, batoning and for survival better to use a bit softer steel for the sake of sturdiness and for maintenance.
    The handle is ergonomic and has a "stopper" at both ends, so if your hand wet, slippy/ muddy, it helps control the knife. I don't like those simple knife handles made of some expensive beautiful wood but without stoppers at the ends. A too simple handle is a risk not just for survival situation but even for a bushcrafter or a "simple" cook/chef.
    Some critics:
    For me this is a bit too pointy. This is ideal if you have only one knife with you, to make some finer carving, to make smaller holes, do some leatherworking or some neccessary surgery.
    For camping/bushcrafter purpose better to use 2 or 3 knives. A big badass for chopping, making the harder works like this, a smaller harder bushcrafter blade and probably a multiuse Swiss Army knife like thing. That is why I think if you have multiple knives with you you don't need a too pointy survival knife. Less ponity means more sturdiness and more badass looking. :-)

  • @martinhafner2201
    @martinhafner2201 3 роки тому +1

    Great design! I would like a slightly longer convex, but that would require CNC machining, which would add even more cost. The small convex will work well enough.
    I have seen many startup designs that make basic mistakes, like sabre with a hollow grind instead of sabre/flat. The hollow is a little too weak which can lead to chipping or wrinkling/warping of the edge. Your design doesn't seem to have any actual mistakes. Of course there are still cost/performance choices like AUS8 vs a higher Moly or Vanadium steel like 154CM. But you have to stop somewhere or you end up with a $300 dollar knife that hardly anyone can afford.
    You also chose a slightly high sabre grind, which works really well in a thick knife, giving it a more gradual grind to retain some sliciness.
    The sabre also leaves a nice flat for clamping sharpeners if it needs a heavy sharpening. You can still keep the convex on a clamped grind if you sharpen at a few angles such as 13/17/20 degrees and then hand sharpen in between to blend the slight polygon to round.

  • @nolobede
    @nolobede 3 роки тому +4

    Love everything about the knife.
    but in the interest of improvement... I really can't see the AUS8 as matching the quality of the rest of the knife.
    AUS8 is much too soft for edge retention and toughness. Its not brittle, but it s edge rolls easy and maybe easy to sharpen yes, but you will be doing it alot.
    and AUS8 is only 4/10 for corrosion protection. Not trying to be a steel snob, but if this knife were in S30V, AEB-l or better, I would buy it in a second even at a much higher price.

      @@sdrtcacgnrjrc exactly, she didn't go into as much detail about that in this video as in her previous one. If I recall correctly. She prefers an edge that will roll first instead of chipping. Yes you will have to sharpen more frequently but a roll is much much easier to remove than chips are. This is also what makes the knife able to bend before it breaks. A bend can be gently straightened but with a break, after much grinding, you end up with a shorter less capable knife. I was sold on this knife when I first heard her talk about it. All of her design parameters are well thought out and align with my thoughts. I've only had mine for a month or so and haven't really put it to the test yet but I love the feel of it in my hand and have high expectations. It isn't a knife for everyone but a good all around tool. It's biggest weakness is the fact that the price has been steadily rising due to our weakening dollars in the world market. It's a great knife and if buying it helps to support Lilly rather than some greedly, unfeeling conglomerate, that's great too.

      Even 420 is better rated in both your criteria. And its cheaper as well.

      1095HC also rates better toughness and ease of sharpening. 3V, But unless you get at least decent edge retention you're gonna need to find a rock or carry a stone or rod.
      AUS8 just rolls like a rubber hose after buttering toast. I don't consider it any better than 8CR13.

    Oddly enough, she criticized the tip of the Fälkniven S1 (an outdoor knife similar to her APO-1S survival knife) which she broke.
    JOE X on his own channel, broke the tip of the APO-1S (sold for €150) more easily and quickly than a Ukrainian bushcraft knife (sold between €50 and €60). the blade of the latter being shorter and thinner than her “survival” knife.

    I just bought this knife. I had my eye on older version for several weeks but then I saw your review on new version and finally completed my savings for it so I went for new version. Can't wait to receive it. Hope delivery won't take too long.
    I'm sure I'll gonna have lots of fun with it.

    Any chance of APO-1S with micarta scales like the first APO-1?

  • @butchmontoya4142

    As a proud US owner of an APO-1H (Hunter - I prefer this blade length [I also prefer the Kydex sheath offered with the "H" version]) - my only issue is that since you no longer sell directly to customers in the United States and since Canadian Prepper only stocks the APO-1S I can not purchase 2nd APO-1H in the limited edition black finish.

    HI Lilly, may I have some Qs if U don't mind...:
    -Is there any disassembled photo of the handle without the panels, pls?
    -Why the panel screws go so deep into the handle, [or why they are not in level whith the panel itself? ] technically the main focus behind the Q is that... there seems to be too much space for 'garbage' like mud/snow/sand/blood ...etc... so have to clean up, but does not seem to me so easy.

    Hi Lilly, I live in New Jersey in the United State and I received my APO-1S last week. It's amazing and I am delighted with it. It arrived razor sharp and the first thing I did was test it by shaving the hair off my arm. Also, I am impressed by the cleaver sheath retention design. I have one suggestion for your next design update. I suggest that you lengthen the grip by 1/4' (6.35mm). I have large hands. It fits my hand but it's a little tight. Also, I enjoy all your videos and adventures. I wish I could join you. Keep up the good work.

      @imran Khan Finally someone that gets it !, they make videos for money whilst getting big endorsements, gear for free and then complaining about the demonetization whilst other people work 60 hours a week making less. Remember when YT was a hobby

      @imran Khan Maybe I misunderstand your comment.
      It appears that you are criticizing the OP "James" for stating that they have no need for a knife but was publicly supporting an appreciating Lilly's time and effort with this video and channel.
      If you are criticizing James' comment, I don't know why or what they said that was offensive.
      Please explain what was offensive as to why you even referred to him being another example of a garbage man.
      I honestly don't understand what you mean and if I misunderstood what you were saying then I apologize.

    Lilly--Still loving my APO-1S! It impresses me more and more with each use.
    To everyone--If you haven't already purchased one, do yourself a favor and don't hesitate. I can't recommend it enough! It is with me wherever I go whether traveling for work or off in the woods.
    Lilly--Hoping the 1H shows up in Canadian Prepper's store... You'd have #1 and #2 best sellers then 😉
    And I totally agree with the idea of an APO folder. I definitely would purchase it because I know it would be high quality as my APO-1S (and you would have #1, #2 and #3 on Canadian Preparedness 👍) Hmmm ... You could do and APO-1 3 Piece Box Set with S, H and F(older)... Now that would be an awesome Christmas present!

    Looks like a fällkniven A1 but with cheaper steel. Or a Cold Steel SRK. Not much new design in general going on, more like tweaking details on already working ones.

    That knife looks good and AUS-8 is a good steel but... I don't think that would satisty you who destroyed a knife in VG10 and was complaining a lot about it.

    It reminds of an SRK in AUS8 that they used to make. It seems to have that platform and fine tuned it for survival situations vs tactical, such as the clip point that's thicker for the point of the knife, handles and the pummel that extends out for a lanyard or hammer in different situations, that part should be the full width of the handle in my opinion. Great knife it's close to what i would design.
