I hear you. I've had mine about 20 years. Regular wood processing and camping. Black coating has taken a beating (who cares - I could strip it if I could be bothered) and the handles are a bit scratched up but the blade just keeps going with basic maintenance. Made to be batoned. Have a great day.
Sounds like a Camillus Becker Campanion Y'all have if it was 20 years ago at "around $50;" I believe the lowest Camillus Becker went was $60, as was mine (but there could have been sale prices back then.) Different Steel then for that Model, 50-100-B, a Ball Bearing Steel, and a more usable 3/16" thickness instead of Kabar's later, thicker 1/4" 1095 Cro-Van. I handmade Green G-10 handles for mine with an integral 4-line Paracord D-Guard & tiger-striped the coating by selective sanding so it looks Unique & user friendly; but the most important point is that after 20+ Years, it's still kicking in wood/kindling processing. Yep. I Don't think we're alone in that. There's a Lot of those that were sold back then, and I Love to hear when they're still going Strong. Huge Bang for Little Buck$ 🔪
BK2 is the closest to "one tool only" perfection as you can get. that being said, add: silky bigboy, stainless cookpot, spetsnaz shovel, and smaller companion blade for a very competant kit.
I bought mine for around $50.00 when they first came out. I have the “Camillus” Becker BK2, it’s the same knife but it’s a solid piece of steel whereas the kabar has a skeletonized handle covered by the scales.
My BK2 was my wedding gift from my wife 😂 but my go to is now the Esee laser strike. Smaller, more tactical and it fits my body armour just right. Best knife ever in my opinion 👍
Agree. The BK2 is a heavy beast and not really suited for utility work - edge is just too thick. It's designed for hard work where you risk snapping the blade (eg. batoning wood). Laser Strike is built for utility work. Can't quite take the beating of the BK2 but is lighter and more nimble in hand. Great hiking & camping fixed blade. Have a great day.

It's actually a pretty good choice for a survival knife. It's durable easy to hone it's a great multi purpose knife. Which is what you want for a "survival" knife.

I have the the Becker BK10, basically a .19 version with a thumb ramp on the spine of the BK2. As a survival knife and for an always there no matter what it goes through I would say it is the one I would choose. Size and weight for what you get it is again the choice. The price is not bad for a quality knife.
I'd love to see a DBK head-to-head comparison of the BK2 and BK10, although it probably ought to be a stock BK2--the reprofiling of yours would probably skew the results.
I think this is better for urban disasters where you are cutting through and breaking through all kinds of materials and you're not worried about making feather sticks such as the aftermath of an earthquake plane crash or a combat zone Etc

I've always wanted a BK2 in 3V. 3V isn't a super steel as such but it really would give the blade next level toughness and would improve edge retention along with some stain resistance (although not a stainless steel). Only downside would be more difficult to sharpen. Have a great day.

@@edge-climber8540 Firstly, I think a steel upgrade would be fine, but I think super steels would not be great for the bk2. Something like 14c28n would make a fantastic upgrade to the 1095 crovan used now. Secondly, the bk2 has the cutting geometry of a brick. It is a crobar with an edge. The wider your cutting geometry the more you are going to limit the benefits of the high edge retention that defines super steels. Thirdly, the bk2 is mostly famed for being a functionally unbreakable knife that was at one time quite affordable. Super steels generally trade some toughness for their edge retention making the blade less durable and on top of that the price of the knife would become super high to partially to materisl costs but mostly due to machining and tooling costs. Fourthly, there are better platforms, even within the beker line of knives, for a steel upgrade. I would kill for a magnacut bk16.

Trust if you're in the market just go for the Esee 5. It is going to come with upgraded handles and sheath and just all around superb quality and warranty that cannot be beaten.

I've been using mine since 2019. Great knife in the field. Mine has a muddy look that just doesn't seem to clean off. I use it to chop wood and I've used it to dig out a Dakota Fire Pit when I didn't bring my E-Tool.

BK-2 is the de facto 'honorable mention' knife selection in overbuild category of bushcraft & survival happy-medium. Cross-bred / Jack of all trades... BK-2 'for me' befits lineages to escape/evasion with ingress/egress designs in mind; to having the rugged multi-task, utility camp/field-knife. If I recall before KABAR was in the mix, there was a serrated version for USA military Spec. Ops. As far as relevance to my use... Comfortable, capable, dependable (within reason), relatively compact (still handy with good ergos) knife still offered at a very fair-minded value to cost ratio. My guide/outfitter discounts for BK-2 runs about $85 USD. I think you DBK-guys are right on the money around $100 asking. The 'Micarta' handles (costing extra) is the way to go for all-seasons use vs. the hard, un-textured plastic... especially in freeze/thaw to snow/ice conditions.

A quarter inch knife with a flat saber grind is not a cutting tool in my book. I had this many years ago for a few days, but it was just too thick for anything other than batoning.
It's a crowbar with an edge. But that's the thing with this knife. You should buy it for that not for being anything else. It would never be my bushcraft knife but I do love it for what it is
We all like a good beater knife. I used my Hultafors GK as a chisel to fit in a new door lock the other day. I bashed it with a hammer. Stropped it after & was super sharp again!

That's the basis for a good kit. I can't go past the Mora Robust as a companion blade. I love that knife.

The Becker BK knives always looked good to me.
My dad got me a Bark River gunny Scandi for Christmas because I watch DBK all the time. Its my first good quality fixed blade. I don't remember what steel it is off the top of my head.

My BK2lost his edge just because I spent to much time playing with it in-and-out of the sheath, but anyway, I like it.
A quarter inch knife with a flat saber grind is not a cutting tool in my book. I had this many years ago for a few days, but it was just too thick for anything other than batoning.
It's a crowbar with an edge. But that's the thing with this knife. You should buy it for that not for being anything else. It would never be my bushcraft knife but I do love it for what it is

We all like a good beater knife. I used my Hultafors GK as a chisel to fit in a new door lock the other day. I bashed it with a hammer. Stropped it after & was super sharp again!
