#15 - Quantum Time Travel: the present moment contains quantum information from the future

  • In episode 15 of the Quantum Consciousness series, Justin Riddle speculates on the notion of time travel within quantum mechanics. In quantum computation, the circuits that you design to process your information must be time reversible. This leads to a curious situation where space and time are reversible within the confines of a quantum computation. While we have already discussed times where entanglement and superposition can defy classical ideas about space, it turns out that you can design experiments that show that our classical ideas of time can be violated. To this end, we explore Wheeler’s delayed-choice experiment, which is an iteration of the double-slit experiment, where the decision to measure which slit a particle went through can be made after the particle has already passed through the slits! Another experiment is delayed-choice entanglement swapping, in which the decision to entangle two photons in the future will alter the correlation between measurements we have already made in the past! These are truly mind-boggling experiments. If we assume that the brain is able to perform quantum computations (see previous episodes), then perhaps time reversibility might be used by the brain to generate a real-time experience of the present moment. Information can be processed in the future and then referred backwards in time so that the present moment is rich with a lot of detail. This does not create time paradoxes because only quantum information can be transmitted to the past, and quantum information might be more like a feeling, an impression, or a suggestion, and less like hard data. Many questions to be raised in this episode as we explore the nature of time in quantum mechanics.

How the HECK am I just now coming across your content and how is it you have so few views? I am utterly flabbergasted. I've been following Penrose and Hammeroff for at least the last couple of years, but have been interested in this stuff (and everything else) for the last 45 (I'm almost 60). You are a gem. I feel like I found the one black grain of sand on the beach of Maupiti in Tahiti (or Kapula Bay, Maui -- you get to pick). Penrose does a great job outlining the conceptual framework (leading me down the Goodstein theorem/PBS Kill the Mathematical Hydra/transfinite ordinal/Conway surreal number rabbit hole), and Hammeroff hammers through the details, but I've been struggling to do exactly what you have done -- put an intellectual bow on it and get to the point of what these things mean in real life. I've made some progress, but you've jumped ahead. For example, I had an experience a while back involving an RV and the poop water drain in which I remember both the pipe separating and me being in a different location AT THE SAME TIME. I've also experienced first-hand what a Tai Chi master can do to you. One second you are standing and the next you are on the floor with no memory of how you got there. You ask , "How did you do that?" The answer is, "I didn't. You did." Their saying is, "Follow your opponent but arrive first." Your example of hitting a fastball took it out of the park for me. The fact that we animals with cerebrums can process information taking advantage of the delayed-choice quantum eraser effect is stunning and yet, with a bit of reflection, given the ubiquity of microtubules going back to the foundation of life itself in RNA, unavoidable. P.S.: Do I remember correctly that by interfering with the stimulus in the brain AFTER touching the finger they can ERASE the memory of sensation?

Another way of saying this, and more appropriate, is that the mind is tuning the meta-brain-sensory-array to the Medium, which is a network of entities and identities, using a Beyesian statistics. The medium which we are of and in is a phase array so the now, which is hyper-relative (Bergson), is always in communication with the rest of the Universe and "Time" is not a strict linear flow but the oscillation of the NOW of matter and mind in relation within intermixing light cones. It's a feedback loop so yes of course we perceive under analysis a backward seeming time function.

This has been my explanation for some precognition events that I have experienced for many years. After the most astounding precognition event, I began searching the internet for physics explanations as I am an atheist and I don't believe in any kind spiritual explanation. I found the Delayed Choice Quantum Eraser Experiment and its retrocausality explanation. I subscribe to the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, so I think that precognition can begin when the vast majority of my futures have converged on an almost unavoidable outcome. I have had precognitions up to about a minute. I experience precognitions mostly when I am relaxed and nothing is vying for my attention. I am 99% sure you are on the right track with your research.

I'm curious why you appreciate the many worlds interpretation from this perspective.
I have had a similar experience of deja vu that lasted for multiple minutes when I was a kid. This one time in particular really stands out.

remind me of a discussion I had with one of my mentors (a quantum gravity prof) about how the eyes are a pair of double slits and the visual cortex is the wall -- probably was because I was learning in class at the moment about the columnar organization of ocular dominance in the primary visual cortex (which kind of looks like interference patterns).

Thank you. Quantum consciousness so beautifully and succinctly described in relation to a moment in sport, (perhaps better named a 'wide' moment encompassing smeared time, both forward and backwards), specifically in baseball, the gut 'feeling' that enables a hitter to actually hit etc. But, being less a sportsman and more a musician, I think of the 'playing' of Jazz, for one example, and the precise temporal and tonal accuracy necessary for musicians to improvise together coherently, and suddenly all music seems to be an exercise of this capacity to utilized 'wide' moments, an ecstatic honing of our existence in smeared temporal 'nows', all of them propelling forward, both for the players and listeners; the gleeful use of anticipatory tonalities, either given or withheld, melodic or harmonic expectations toyed with endlessly. Music then is an even more demanding and beneficial activity than sport, in terms of it's ability to develop and hone our capacity to 'be' in time, or rather, to exist in temporal subjectivity within 'wide' moments, precisely aware of the proportion of our being in relation and conjunction with others (here other musicians)... and the fact that we can hear that greatly 'fattened' collective time occurring as (not when) the idea of an 'all at once' disintegrates, and widely distributed subjective 'moments' are experienced by player and listener as more than 'now', in the old sense, more than that ever moving edge described by Aristotle, the dimensionless border that divides a non existent past from a future yet to arrive etc.. that we once, well often, lol, in our ignorance, called 'now'.

The entanglement of the electrical signals of the objective and subjective processing centers in the brain seem to me to be an ideal perceptual-eye/I mechanism from which a sense of self and awareness of your own awareness would naturally be the product of (although I've certainly become more inclined to the wandering pilot in the q-network that parallels/manages/interferes-with/overrides the binary neuro -chemical processing). I think Hameroff's 2012 paper was my first introduction to quantum consciousness, and I still find what evidence there was for this model compelling. Frankly, I expected this subject to waffle, but the experiments and evidences keep coming year after year.

The simplest way Ive been able to relate to the notion of quantum info "going backward in time" is that mailman-problem's wave-computation solution; the way linear computation would have to go down each path, one after the other, but because it goes down all of the paths at once, it looks like it delivers the answer before it completed the sequence of the calculation.
I then expand this to the idea of a wave-form being spread out in space-time, or time-space, and a calculating wave can share it's output across the wave's time-frames equally, so the first part, or first moment of the wave knows all the outputs as much as the last moment "end point" of the calculating wave. Unless Penrose's Orch is proven, non of this is any "real particle" going backwards in time, its just wave dynamics doing everything all at once when we typically expect linear processing.

You have probably covered this elsewhere, but I'm just exploring your videos for the first time, but something that should also be considered when contemplating the hitting of a baseball is the idea that consciousness has a "refresh rate" or a "frame rate". Hameroff explains that this arises as a consequence of the scaling down from much higher vibrations within the quantum system. Many witness accounts will describe how time appears to slow down in moments of anger or in times of great sporting prowess. Watch Lionel Messi frame by frame and see how much faster his brain is running than the majority of the other players.
One thing that I always wondered about. It must be possible for that half a second of computation to be interrupted, to allow new computations to occur. But can information about the success of a strategy be sent back in time?
As you describe the gut feeling of knowing you can hit the ball, is that because the computation contains the actual result?

Would it explain the Zone state which occurs at high quality performance as synchronicity of neural and locomotive systems to the point of the experience of timelessness? If this provides optimal outputs, then everything other is suboptimal and probably a result of defected feedbacks due to some lack of resonance, wave propagation blocks, interference, bad metabolism etc. Can we imagine what the world looks like if humans would be able to sustain the zone state, the flow of it, the freedom from limitations of inner and outer incoherency?
Really love your videos and keep watching ❤

    "Don't be absurd!"
"Well if we can help you we will
    You're looking tired and ill
    As I count backwards
    Your eyes become heavier still
Sleep, won't you allow yourself fall
Nothing can hurt you at all
    With your consent
    I can experiment further still."
    Madrigal music is playing
    Voices can faintly be heard
    "Please leave this patient undisturbed."
Sentenced to drift far away now
Nothing is quite what it seems
Sometimes entangled in your own dreams
"Well, if we can help you we will
Soon as you're tired and ill

@24:33 Could you not then; entangle two photons in a crystal as mentioned and send one to a monitor on a planet in a distant stable orbit, and send the other one into a black hole. The particle in the BH either hits a singularity or enters into a perpetually accellerating orbit in a MECO. By studying the population by repeated experiments you can verify which states those populations exist in and study the interior state. Orbiting photons would then leave a highly biased population of correlative photons in the experiment. Uncorrelative population would support singularity encounter and timing data.

I really want to see what a neural-plausible quantum computer would look like that uses electric fields as its basis. This would explain why we see large-scale delocalized electrical activity that relates to cognition. And the connection to time is compelling - oscillations set a rhythmic time signature.
I saw a recent paper on quantum field theory and neural oscillations, but UA-cam doesn't allow links! Search for these:
Michael Levin has some work on this: "Neurons as hierarchies of quantum reference frames" from January 2022
James Halverson (not familiar with him but will look up more of his work) "Building Quantum Field Theories Out of Neurons" and "Neural Networks and Quantum Field Theory"
All of these from the past year no less! Exciting times to be looking into this stuff

I think the fact that all forms of qualia are perceived as an instantaneous, integrated sensation is game-over evidence that this must be the case. There is nowhere else that such a thing can exist. Additionally sensations like deja-vu or synchronicity allude to the phenomenon of perception being related to time (those probably happen when you receive the quantum solution too early or late, or more than once); whatever the reason, that it's time-related is a fact.
Unfortunately I don't think this tells us that we are entities. If the brain is aggregating data, quantum computing it, and then receiving it's own data back to itself then "we" still die forever with the brain and there never was a "we" to begin with, only the illusion of self created by the computation and sensation of qualia

I don’t even think higher psychic functioning is something just people are capable of. Anything that’s conscious is technically psychic… consciousness is quantum and nonlocal in nature but nonlocal or nonlinear perception was never necessary in survival or evolution so it’s underdeveloped.

This sentence is false isn't even a paradox. It is false that a particle is spinning up because its spinning down but it's false that it is spinning down because it is spinning up (superposition). It is false that there is energy at the quantum vacuum because the total energy is precisely zero, however, it is false that there is an absence of energy because there are infinite potential forces (Zero-point energy, Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle). Our reality just consists of possibilities that only exist as possibilities. There is nothing there but that nothing is equivalent to everything because there isn't anything else.
