      On a philosophical sense, technically yes, all words are just noises that we've agreed have a meaning. But the difference between "bruh" and your run of the mill word comes into play here : regular words have had a long and organic evolution to come to where they are now and their meaning is generally understood by most. The term "bruh" on the other hand is a neologism that has no real precedent and has no agreed concensus on it's meaning, therefore each person interprets it as they see fit, something that doesn't happen with say car, you cannot go to someone and say that car means dog and have them be fine with it because the meaning behind the term is largely agreed upon to not refer to a canine but to a vehicle whereas you can go see someone and tell them that bruh is a catchphrase, a sound of pain, a mark of irony or a deep religious sound similar to the Indian Om and the person would not bat an eye (except maybe with the last one since the person may think you are memeing, which you would most probably be if you said that) since there is no commonly agreed upon meaning.
      Hope that very limited linguistic explanation was useful

      @dragonpower0 4 роки тому +32

      @victor ` yeah I know, Miko and a few other vtubers said it too and they were all pretty funny. But a short 20 second funny clip doesn't justify deleting an entire vod or series.
      Also her saying it without knowing the meaning behind it, and her saying it while thinking it's a compliment because her chat tricked her are two entirely different things. The latter is just straight up disrespectful towards her due to how much damage that word can do and how much negative social media attention it can attract. It may be all in good fun for the viewers but third party social media don't care about intentions, they just want to find reasons to witch hunt. It's just a really mean thing to do and is the kind of incident that can cause distrust between the streamer and her viewers.

    • @dragonpower0
      @dragonpower0 4 роки тому +3

      @victor ` Yeah you're right. Thanks for clarifying your intentions and being peaceful throughout this conversation. I'm also sorry if I came off as aggressive or mean. There are already enough problems within the Japanese vtuber audience/community and I just don't want the English community to spill over any of that Twitch chat toxicity as well.
      I'm not saying that any of the conversation before this was bad, I just wanted to clarify intentions. I may not be in a position to do so, but I would want to do what I can to make the English vtuber community to be as wholesome and respectful as possible, and if it is me that has to change for that then I'm more than willing to do so.

    Kusa / "grass" has quite a bit of history:
    first, in Japanese, warai / 笑い means laughter.
    in early days of MMORPGs, these games didn't have Japanese support, so people straight-up typed in "warai" on the chat.
    And then they started to shorten it to just "w". As time goes on, the number of w started to express how much they laugh.
    Later on, this act became to be called "kusa wo hayasu / growing some grass", as it looks like a grassfield.
    Eventually, this also became shortened and just called "kusa".

      Let me take this opportunity to say that already having a hobby of watching vtubers is big advantage for a Japanese language learner. You will find yourself expanding your vocabulary in a much faster pace since you probably have heard a lot of recurring words and grammar by now. Reading might not be the easiest to practice but if you want to, you can look for 切り抜き(kirinuki) channels out there that clips from vtubers' archive videos and put jap subs on it. It's a slow progress, but it will help you get used to seeing hiragana and katakanas (and later on, kanjis), and eventually be able to read and understand them.
      If anything, I could say this is a more effective extra effort for enhancing your Japanese learning than with watching anime. One of the big downside is that vtubers tend to have a quirky talking habit/pattern and slightly rude expressions which isn't really suggested to be picked up by beginners, but the overall benefit still outweighs this.
      Anyway, I hope you have a fun time learning Japanese!

    It's weird to think about "bruh" being closer in meaning to "seriously" when it is literally a corruption of "bro" which is short for "brother".
    And to have a full understanding of the purpose of the word, you have to explain that people call friends and compatriots "brothers", and that the slang evolved from using that term "brother" shortened to "bro" in an incredulous tone. And in fact, depending on context, it may not always mean incredulity.

      English is crazy.
      For example, Russian is extremely literal. If you're trying to use a translation app to speak with someone in Russian, you can't use any metaphorical, slang or colloquial language.
      Telling someone you munch good pussy in Russian would translate to "I eat well behaved cats." You have to say everything exactly as it is.
      English is almost entirely used in colloquial, slang, metaphorical and hyperbolic language. It is so insanely context and tone dependant that it's no wonder people have such a hard time learning.

      I prefer to use it for throwing things, since "woot" is still easier to say and has a more clear lexographical origin as a celebratory exclamation.
