James Earl Jones is an absolute treasure, as is Max Von Sydow (there are NO small parts). But Basil Poledouris’ score elevates this movie to another level, and brings the right emotional notes at each scene to make this a treasured classic.

@@Ironclad6661 It was a very adult-themed for a kid. I speak from experience. However extreme it may have been, I think the film makers did a great job of not over-complicating the film. Even younger viewers knew who the good guys were. Unlike some films of today. 🤓

Anvil of Crom is so great that there are no speach for about 10mn in the film. An so, all along the movie, there are minutes and minutes of no dialogue because music say it all. The music is preponderant in this film and fits so nicely with the action. So brilliant !
One of the Greatest musical creations from the 20th Century. Truly a masterpiece. If you had no idea is was written as a score for Conan, you would think it was written by one of the great classical composers.
Arnold Schwarzenegger played a wonderful role as Conan the Barbarian. I saw the movie so many times and never got tired of watching it and I'll do it again and again.
It's great how much respect this soundtrack gets so many years later. It elevated the movie so much. With such little dialogue, the soundtrack had to sell every moment.
that's in great part why modern movies are atrocious, instead of timeless art pieces they have either whatever the director or it's kids are listening to or tv commercial jingles they completely forgot sound and a proper score was doing 2/3 of the work if not more...you can listen to a movie and miss little of it, a movie without sound and a good score is unwatchable
And Basil had to talk the director into it, they wanted new pop music to originally go with this movie. But Basil won the day and that's why Conan is Conan.
@@mrplasterpants That's also one reason Star Wars took off. When cheesy sci fi of the time had funky synth music, John Williams' pops symphonic music elevated the movies above their peers.

As a young man stationed in SouthEast Asia during the Vietnam War, there were periods of time that the base would be closed. During these periods, I had gone over to the base USO station 'to hang out'. I found a complete collection of Robert E. Howard's books..I poured over those books from cover to cover, and the old maps on the inside covers. Come forward to 1982, the exhilaration, joy, and anticipation that welled in me, with the announcement of the "Conan the Barbarian" movie. The magic of Thoth Amon and Thulsa Doom has never faded, and Conan overshadowing the landscape has never stopped!!
Went to the 40th anniversary screening of Conan tonight at the theaters. Always enjoyed the movie but seeing it for the first time on the big screen elevated it to an entirely new level. Hearing the score in the theater as it began, or as they delve into the caves brought chills all over. Incredible soundtrack.
Saw this opening night in Oklahoma city! As a added bonus (no additional cost) we also got to watch "The Road Warrior". That was my favorite year. Stood in line for 3+ hours (in Oklahoma city) to watch "Star Trek: the Wrath of Khan".
You know the soundtrack is good when you can watch the movie in your mind just by listening to the music... This and the original Jurassic Park soundtrack both do it..
This sound track stands amongst the Titans of movie scores. Truly Epic. If not for this score, the movie would have been all but forgotten as " just some fantasy movie" from the 80's.
I remember on that goofy sitcom, The Facts of Life, they made fun of one of the girls (Jo) for being up all night listening to the Conan soundtrack. At the time I thought 'what the hell's wrong with that?' since I myself had spent many hours listening repeatedly to what I knew even as a teenager was an outstanding piece of work that would never be equaled.
I just looked it up and found that ET won the award for best music, while Conan wasnt even nominated. No wonder I dont do awards shows. The Conan soundtrack was outstanding and continues to shine 40+ years later. A true classic

"I never prayed nor do I have the proper tongue to do so, but please Lord Crom grant me a victorious battle over my countless enemies, and if not then to Hell with you."
Conan soundtrack and movie remain some of the most underrated masterpieces of the age of cinema. They both embody the essence of what a story is, a man carving his own path through the tragedy of the world around him. Could have been a Homeric Epic, but with so few words and its music backdrop, I think cinema is the only way this story could, and should, be told.

Mine is not also a tale of woe but of similar road as the good the bad the ugly and Sergio Leone did to me as this to you ..but also I will add that Conan the barbarian is still the best ever sword fantasy movie to this day and the soundtrack aids that title..x
Same here but I recorded it on my old vcr when it came on tv and then on cassette. I used to listen it on my old walk man. Same thing with the never ending story.
I snuck in at age 10. Paid for Disney and me and pals snuck into the R rated Conan. I have to say seeing the decapitation of his Mom in the movie beginning wasn't something I forgot at age 10 lol.
@@Ironclad6661 It was a very adult-themed for a kid. I speak from experience. However extreme it may have been, I think the film makers did a great job of not over-complicating the film. Even younger viewers knew who the good guys were. Unlike some films of today. 🤓
@@wh6072 I saw it at 13. I had just discovered J.R.R. Tolkien and Dungeons & Dragons within the same 3 months. The books, game, and film managed to make fantasy my favorite genre. Best revenge movie in history, and awesome soundtrack...

Polidouris WAS a great!
Carl Orff ain't got nothin' on this!

Could even have been Morricone

The most epic music ever made for an epic film… by far!
Arnold Schwarzenegger played a wonderful role as Conan the Barbarian. I saw the movie so many times and never got tired of watching it and I'll do it again and again.

Basil Poledouris has made so many iconic movie soundtracks that give cinema it's epic feel. He is a legend in the music industry.
Robocop as well!
Never forget Farewell to the King either.
It's great how much respect this soundtrack gets so many years later. It elevated the movie so much. With such little dialogue, the soundtrack had to sell every moment.
that's in great part why modern movies are atrocious, instead of timeless art pieces they have either whatever the director or it's kids are listening to or tv commercial jingles
they completely forgot sound and a proper score was doing 2/3 of the work if not more...you can listen to a movie and miss little of it, a movie without sound and a good score is unwatchable
And Basil had to talk the director into it, they wanted new pop music to originally go with this movie. But Basil won the day and that's why Conan is Conan.
Extremely well said
@@mrplasterpants That's also one reason Star Wars took off. When cheesy sci fi of the time had funky synth music, John Williams' pops symphonic music elevated the movies above their peers.
Yes that is why these movies were special,, the music made them,,, todays movies don't have the music and maybe that is part of the reason movies today suck so bad lol
I'm a database programmer, and as I write code and play this music in the background, I can almost *FEEL* my muscles growing!
Just hearing the first bar of 'Theology' immediately conjures up the image of Subotai appearing at a trot from out of the desert, as Conan hangs half conscious, suspended on the trunk of the dead tree.
Amazing film, and totally amazing score.
Poledouris was such a gifted composer, an absolute master of the highest order.
RIP, maestro Basil.

For me too ! I saw the picture in 1982.
Man, this concert just put me in a time machine and teleported me all the way back to the 80's where me, my brother, and my dad were watching Conan The Barbarian and Conan The Destoyer on the couch on a Saturday afternoon 🥲🥲🥲
I love it 😍😍😍
The soundtrack of "Conan the Barbarian" is a real masterpiece in the history of film music 😊👍
I absolutely agree -when I first viewed the film in a theatre when the movie first came out I was astonished by the quality of the orchestral score.Up there with the Ennio Morricone scores.Polegouris died a long time ago i believe?
@@kaloarepo288 Actually, he died in 2006...
It's a shame it's not more well known, it truly is a masterpiece of writing.
@Randall Kildare I meant more widely know to the general populace. When I play this soundtrack at work on my Bluetooth speaker no one knows what it is.
It leans pretty heavily on Prokofiev´s score for Alexander Nevsky (1938), but Poledouris´ composition is still wonderful in it´s own right.
This soundtrack is a masterpiece.
Can not stop tears filling my eyes and goosebumps on my arms I feel amazingly powerful ❤
We will never get another soundtrack like this , it just translate the word " Epic " into music
Never had and never will
What about the Lord of the Rings? I would say many parts are as good as Conan's.
@@kevinnazario1015 Lord of the rings music is nice, but not as evocative as this. Lord of the rings has the privilege of epic dialog and characters, this score propels an otherwise average action movie into the same league as Tolkien

Things are simple. Milius and Poledouris made a ballet. When you listen the soundtrack, you see in your head the integrality of the movie. A true masterpiece !
Greatest movie score ever imo. This orchestra absolutely nailed it. I was moved to tears. Thank you so much Ms. Noone and all the wonderful players
It might be. The only scores I'd put up against it are LotR and Gladiator.
Saw this movie with my father in theaters as a kid and was overwhelmed by the soundtrack. It was incredibly fitting and moving.
Such an underrated soundtrack. IMHO one of the best ever written for a movie. Only rivaled by some of Ennio Morricones work.
Wahre Worte, kann ich gut nachvollziehen...
Went to the 40th anniversary screening of Conan tonight at the theaters. Always enjoyed the movie but seeing it for the first time on the big screen elevated it to an entirely new level. Hearing the score in the theater as it began, or as they delve into the caves brought chills all over. Incredible soundtrack.
this is my favorite movie of all time ive heard this soundtrack a thousand times its the best album i own.
The movie was also epic.
You're not alone man :)

I just looked it up and found that ET won the award for best music, while Conan wasnt even nominated. No wonder I dont do awards shows. The Conan soundtrack was outstanding and continues to shine 40+ years later. A true classic
The soundtrack of my childhood. Conan was my hero growing up. I always ask people what is best in life. Only a handful of people will answer me correctly. "Crush your enemies, see them driven before and hear the lamentation of their women."
I always answer the open steppe, a fleet horse, falcon at your wrist, and the wind in your hair. Then hang my head in shame.

One of the greatest, most epic soundtracks for a movie composed. Right up there with John William's work.

Ahh theology😊 to me, this is what freedom sounds like. My minds eye conjures Subotai ( theif AND archer) and Conan running to their next adventure.
