How to build a Strandbeest

- I bought a small toy Strandbeest online, but it never arrived. So I thought I can make one. This is not the same designed as a traditional Strandbeest but this is my take on it. Originally I was thinking to make it wind powered, but wood make more friction than plastic so I decide to make it motorized. I did not make any pre-designing or planning, just start with a leg and make other parts as I go. I made some mistakes and did some changes, I edit most of it out, but you look closely you can spot couple of mistakes I made. I used a drill press when I need to drill a hole 90-degree angle to the wood. If you don’t have a drill press, find a way to drill 90-degree angle to the wood because you need it to make the crankshaft, for the rest a regular drill will do just find. thanks for watching, don't forget to like and subscribe

Strandbeest is Dutch and means Beachbeast, the maker was a Dutch guy who created it as an artwork to walk on the Dutch beaches.

If you want to reduce the friction on the wood, you could cut small washers out of thin sheet plastic.

And, if you have a candle handy, you could rub some wax on the wood-metal interface to reduce friction further. Great video - very creative. Well done and thank you for sharing your video. I just found out about these beests today.

A Klann mechanism, while the "traditional" stranbeest is a Jansen Mechanism, you did a Klann walker, wich actually, it's supposed to be more difficult to build and move mora naturally (more lime an animal similar to an arthropod).

Funny how they didn’t give you the Jansen Linkage, so you used the Klann Linkage instead. Other than that, this build is sick 20/10!

The first thing coming to my mind when i saw mr. Jansens constructions was: they are made of bamboo. Just later on a get awareof that they are made of PVC-tubes..

Can u tell the dynamo specifications?
It's 6v to12v. I used 9v battery it's working fine. High torque and low RPM DC motor with 150 RPM output. Length without shaft 26 mm. you can use any high torque DC motor but try to keep the weight down.

I don't, I didn't made any pre drawing or plan. I just start building and adjust things as I go. if you watch the video carefully, crank shaft is a weary simple one.
