- Strandbeest Evolution 2021 provides an update on the evolutionary development. Every spring I go to the beach with a new beast. During the summer I do all kinds of experiments with the wind, sand and water. In the fall I grew a bit wiser about how these beasts can survive the circumstances on the beach. At that point I declare them extinct and they go to the bone yard.
The way he runs after the strandbeest walking towards is honestly so endearing, like he’s chasing after his child who’s learning to walk and already wants to run before he’s ready
Agreed. It looks like he's legitimately running after it to keep it out of the surf. I know it's just to save 'wood and cloth' but you see how much he cares for his art. The simple act can be a part of the Art too in a way.
I recently read about why Theo Jansen makes Strandbeest. He wants to show is that, in his words, the walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds. After watching these videos I couldn't agree more. Videos like these should be shown in schools.

Original art forms, really original in these days is almost impossible to find, yet here it is; a perfect combination of technical skill, imagination and beauty. How I would love to see one of these in person someday, but at least here we get to see many of them. Thank you!

It's on my Christmas list, but I guess I have not been good enough yet. 😄 You might like to know, that here on youtube is a video of a man who used one of those models for learning how to build a Strandbeest that he sat upon and made it pedal-powered! It didn't go very fast, but it did go eventually. Inspiration is everywhere. Thank you. 🙂

I saw Theo’s strandbeesten a couple of years ago. I can’t find words to describe how special they really are. The way they move, it’s truly amazing. What an artist.

This is absolute genius like I have never seen before. I am an aerospace engineer here in the States. I am gladly sharing this. Such unique thinking. As if I’m watching parallel evolution of other species that could exist elsewhere in the universe. Simply breathtaking.
Do you think these have any potential for light rovers for exploration or something like that?
This is a beautiful question. My mind goes to solar wind and plasma energy created by stars such as our sun. I even recall the great master Larry Niven exploring the interstellar movement of a sentient being (called the Outsiders, that followed star seed lures placed by Pierson Puppeteers in his iconic, award winning Ringworld novel-highly recommend.) Can solar wind function as lift? Such a great question. I need to think on this.
You may be thinking of movement on a planetary scale, but what about interstellar change in positions over time among the stars (travel)?
And to answer your question I think you are asking, yes, this could have application on Mars.

What a bright and cheery visual. Animated art is rare, but to this degree was unheard of until this man broke our contemporary notions of what is possible. Can't imagine the engineering and work that goes into imagining, drawing up, building, transporting, and then chasing down one of these mobile masterpieces. A deeply profound sense of appreciation for this man and his team.
When Theo runs over like a concerned parent to a stumbling toddler 🥰. Fantastically beautiful creations that speak a universal language - comments from across the world, great to see.

He is very well known in the art and science industry. He also has exhibition around the world before pandemic, doubt he would care the algorithm. But it is never a bad thing if it helps his work to be admire by more people.

What I find most captivating about the strandbeests are how lifelike they are. They truly seem alive, and it’s curious, because they have no artificial intelligence, no life-like textures or appearances, they are simply a combination of sailcloth and tubing. They probably could have been made (at much greater cost) hundreds of years ago, with oiled leather pouches for air sacks and reeds for tubing, and yet they are so lifelike out of such simple materials. It makes me wonder: just what about them is intrinsic to our human perception of life?
They sometimes have pneumatic sensors and logic gates so they can walk away from water ( basically if a tube can't draw air some can then start using stored up energy to push in the other direction)

To our brains, if something moves seemingly on its own, then it is alive.
I think it’s that they use air to “breathe” they cannot move without the wind, like we can’t live without air.
They’re wind powered, and wind is often described as having a living quality.
I love how the myriad feet quickly tippy toe across the sand with elegance and fluidity. Truly beautiful, I would love to be small enough to ride in one!

I haven't seen Strandbeest for a few years. So glad you are still making them because they are remarkable in their apparent simplicity, but the physics is mindblowing.
Every flat beach needs some! I'm in Australia where there are many wide flat white beaches. I grew up on one that was 5ks long and 1k wide on a low tide. But the beach was almost completely covered at high tide so there would not be much room for a Strandbeest to rest on the high. 👍😄

Because just like wind turbines ------ in theory it sounds like a great idea but the reality is, it leaves a huge carbon footprint, is far from green and top problem ------- no wind, no work.

@Pandacat 666 Unlikely, knowledge of firearms and explosives is far too widespread now for it to die.
Knowledge of the basics of electrical engineering is likewise very widespread.
As for the rest, steam power was invented 2000 years ago but took only 2 centuries to go from a mere novelty interest to the foundation of the industrial revolution.
Trust me when I say that regaining at least a basic grasp of what we had 100 years ago would not take so long at all.

These are incredible pieces of engineering, but these would pretty scary to see undulating down the beach towards you if you weren't prepared to see them or were unfamiliar with them.

Imagine being someone from a stone age culture encountering one of these. They would probably think it's a living being.

On the other hand, imagine being familiar with them- that you eventually become so used to them, they become more of a friend that you meet on the beach once in a while.
Backrooms on the Beach!
Strange and beautiful. I especially love the centipede tails, or whatever you're calling them. The movement of the wave draws your eye back to the piece. They're mesmerizing and yet, somehow, they sorta give me the willies, but just enough to be very interesting, I can explore the feeling. My brain keeps trying to tell me they're alive, kinda like when you see a face in some wrinkled fabric. They remind me of Wayne Barlowe's book "Expedition" in the best way too.
They remind me alot of Jon Anderson's (from Yes) Flight of the Moorglade song --- from his solo Olias of Sunhillow album .
Someone who can marry art with science like this is closer to The One than anyone can ever hope to be .
This video is incredible Theo. Your creations are mechanically beautiful. When I saw them in the air I stood up and said "what?", I didn't know you were teaching them to fly. I have so much respect for your decision to pursue an idea that is so progressive, and focused, and specific, but not defined or limited, or influenced in any particular way. It's hard to find the right words to express how your art makes me feel. I'm wasting my life, not living it.

I wonder if they are mostly CAD modelled ?
Some things can just be organically seat-of-the-pants engineered, but with so many parts inter-dependent one must get the fundamental geometry right and then replicate it many times
I imagine there are some fundamental kinetic machine elementary building blocks as starting points which are then elaborated
@@kurtklingbeil6900 Not sure about wind changing direction, but the strandbeest have multiple adaptations to survive storms. For example, Animaris Rex, the most recent beast, is many strandbeest connected together to form something of a superorganism, and this helps to survive storms as the strandbeest are less likely to be blown together in a group than if they were on their own. There are also strandbeest that drop an anchor and spread out their sails so much that they lift several feet into the air, which prevents being buried by sand in a sandstorm

Having read Richard Dawkins’ The Blind Watchmaker, I can’t see any living thing without considering where it/we came from.
Very telling though, that I see these as animals… it’s impossible to miss that.

These images are magical, as, of course are the fascinating objects here, each more enchanting than the other. I cannot help but think of the enormous logistic to transport and deploy these enormous pieces, which, I can only imagine must be disassembled, loaded into a large vehicle, and then put together on the beach. Which means, for every minute of enchantment and magic, there must be countless hours of production and logistic to make it happen. And this is not considering the months of designing, r&d, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing. Mind blowing indeed.

@aidanmatthewgalea7761 yes, "they do get prototypes"; smaller versions to make sure the mechanics work. Did you think the pieces were produced as large as these are before testing with smaller prototypes? Think just for a moment.
I truly felt like I was looking at an other world somewhere in this vast cosmos where these where the life beings that evolved there. It was one of the coolest things I've seen in a long while. :) Truly enjoyed that.

i don't know, it is possible that they would get overwhelmed by strong winds and simply swept away, because it looks like they are made to walk instead of running. Although it is 100% possible to make a strandbeest that gallops, that would be really cool.

Honestly - you should film all your creations in the magic light in the beginning of the video. Those dark, cloudy, dreamy skies are just perfect for the sculptures and remind me so much of Tanguy's magic, haunting world. Brilliant work with your Stransbeest!

At 2:45, watching the beest that is tied to the ground and desparately trying to lift off, the words 'animal abuse' popped into my head, and wouldn't leave. Your creations feel like real creatures to me. Bravo.
Ik this comment is 6 months old but they do not want to take off, the reason why they are in the air is not to fly to other places but as a method to avoid being buried by sandstorms. One day, when they detect that a sandstorm is coming, they will automatically place down their own anchor and spread their wings to lift into the air, thus dodging death. Theo Jansen is one smart man.

Amazing creatures with years of intense effort. It is hard to imagine what went into this, even how such things were transported to and from the beach. The videography is also excellent.
It's their natural habitat, the beasts don't have to be transported. Theo is there to greet and watch and document their evolution.

I have loved all the strandbeests I have seen over the years, but there is a special joy in seeing the small caterpillar-like beesties gamboling along the beach like playful wind puppies!

I almost never comment on youtube videos, but this is really truly amazing. I came across the Strandbeest a few years ago and I was immediately filled with immense wonder. They have stayed on my mind and I think about them once in a while.
It feels as though they are from a different universe, or a parallel timeline. The majestic scenery and the classical music adds so much! I would be honored to witness one of your creations one day.

That's amazing. I've heard of the Strandbeeste years ago, I didn't realise they'd become so advanced though! I love the ones that fly! The one that has to be tethered down, could you give it some long strings, and let it escape into the sky? Some crazy bird or crab creature dancing across the sky would be amazing to see. How high might it be able to go?
Theo, have you thought about making one of these strong enough to ride? So you could sit on it's back, metres above the beach, and it's enormous wind-catchers would have it prancing and streaking across the sand, with you on the back pulling levers to steer it. Then when you're bored of that you pull the "transform" lever and it turns into a bird and you fly away.
I'm disappointed to hear they end up in the "boneyard", surely there must be museums and art galleries around the world interested in these? They're evidence that, if you really want to, you can do anything with science and engineering. Their inspirational value alone is immense, but seeing some of the mechanisms explained in a museum would be good too.
Seriously, yes, these need to be preserved in some way! It would be awesome if they could go on tour, and you could do presentations for schools & universities. 💚
The problem isnt flying, its getting them to land safely.
Would be interesting to see what a cosplay or professional costume designer would do with those. I know seeing something that looked alien but alive come at me would have me running. the fact I can see its mechanical is the only thing that saves me right now.
I had the opportunity to see these beautiful Strandbeeste in person some years ago and the whole experience was astonishing. Theo Jansen is a genius who deserves greater recognition.

Blown away. At first I was peering at the screen , trying to see the people hidden inside doing the pedalling, but then I realised I was seeing genius of engineering and art combined.

Theo Jansen was a visiting artist when I attended Herron School of Art and I had the honor to see one of his sculptures move in person. Extremely complex and so elegantly created. Wonderful to reconnect with him again!

This is the perfect vid to watch right after waking up when the night’s dreams are still fresh in the mind. It amplifies the already nice “is this real or am I still dreaming?” quality the footage already possesses.

Amazing. Felt like landing on an alien planet, and observing for the first time its lifeforms, totally different from anything familiar to us.

I work at a museum in America were they did a show of your creations and still spell bound at the creativity/ engineering. It's amazing what you can do with electrical pvc conduits👍

I think "evolution" is absolutely the correct language to use when describing these beasts. I keep getting a sense that we are seeing a glimpse of how evolutionary change actually works. Evolution will try anything, and there is a natural selection of what works. The environment shapes and drives that natural selection of continuous improvement.

I love this. Oh, my wife and I both thought "I think I've seen this before" the first time we saw it. I think it's because they are reminiscent of some of Da Vinci's drawings of flying machines he never built.
I wish I had half the imagination and skill as this man. Stunningly beautiful. It would be interesting to see how they were transported to the site. Have never seen anything like this anywhere.
