He loved his son, but he didn't realize that being a good father is more than loving your child and making them laugh when you're there, it's about putting your child's wants and needs ahead of your own and about guiding and supporting them on their life's journey. A real man puts his family at the center of his life
I mean he wasn't really a bad father. A bad father is someone that doesn't even bother with you at all without a care in the world especially in they never claimed you as their child. He was definitely a good father even though he was a workaholic he took his job as his main priority after getting divorced.
@@JaredThaBoi its implied the divorce happened 2 years before the movie took place and by the way Audrey is acting him putting his job over his family was the reason they got divorced in the first place. He was so bussy making a great career he did stop to take care of his son which hasnt changed until he couldnt lie anymore.Thats emotional neglect which would indeed make him a bad father. Not a horrible or abusive one, but still bad
This was the first time I realized that, within Jim's comedic performances and often goofy characters, buried within those films, there was sometimes a very serious message. I looked at his films differently after seeing this scene. This one really hit me hard.
Him saying he’s a bad father was the most real thing he ever said that was true. Knowing he was really a bad father he was a father who never put his son first knowing how obsessed he was with his job.
I always cry pretty good with this scene. Although the effort he continually puts in shows that he's not a bad father, the first step is admitting that he needs work. The symbolic state of "no longer being able to lie" forces him to face the dragon; his problem of not being a man of his word and valuing other people.
When I first watched this movie, I expected the usual Jim Carrey movie with a lot of faces and energy, and some overacting as well. But at 0:30, Jim really strikes a chord. The realization he displayed on his face knowing it wasn’t a lie because he can’t lie. It was just masterclass acting on Jim Carrey’s part.
The movie shows that he only speaks the truth as he believes it, not that he tells the objective correct thing. Like when he dismissed the 'beauty on the inside' comment. So he believes himself to be a bad father, even though we do see throughout the movie he is trying to be a good father, and is aware everytime he disappoints his son.
Fletcher: Alright now let me tell you something. I’M A BAD FATHER! …I mean… i’m a bad father… Fletcher was going to try to defend himself by saying I’M A GOOD FATHER! But he couldn’t lie even to himself anymore. This cuts him so deep because he knows the sad truth is that he deluded himself into thinking his neglect was justified and excusable but when he exclaims I’M A BAD FATHER! That’s the honest part of him. He’s real voice stammers and reluctantly agrees under his breath the cold hard truth that he has in fact been a bad father and nothing he says can change that.
This movie, this scene specifically, perfectly showcases the depth of Carrey's range. One minute he has us laughing so hard we're in tears; then the next scene his performance pulls a 180 and hits us right in the feels for reals!
0:17 "Last night was none of my business. Two years ago, it was my business, but I don't have to care about that anymore. That's the magic of divorce." Earlier, she said "I divorced you 'cause I was mad." So the reason they divorced is because he cheated on her.
Something I noticed about this film is the layering of the idea of dishonesty, and lying, and how just because you aren't lying, doesn't mean you aren't being dishonest. Whenever Fletcher is presented with a problem dealing with personal issues involving lying in the film, he only faces the problem when he's forced to. Otherwise he tries to get out of it, he's actively avoiding the responsibility of truth, which is dishonest. If he doesn't face the problem, he doesn't have to tell the truth, because he doesn't have to lie. When this scene hits, you realize he avoided being honest to his ex, by straight up avoiding her entirely. When he finally is forced to interact, you realize he's not just being dishonest to her, or avoiding her. He's also being dishonest with himself, and avoiding talking about himself. Him saying, "I'm a bad father", is the first time he has to be honest with himself, but he's wrong, not lying. He's a good father, "when he's there". What worried him, is when he said he was a bad father, if felt like he was saying he doesn't love his son. Which is why she reassured him for the first time, she understood that hurt him. At least that's what I got out of it.
I mean…..let’s not beat around the bush. He was busy getting his dick wet during his sons birthday. I don’t think that comes under being a trial lawyer
Fletcher Reed. Audrey you can’t go this is not fair. Audrey Reed. Fair? Oh ok let’s to find fair shawy last night a 5 year old boy was crushed because of his father lied to him about coming to his 🥳 🎊 fair?
It’s none of my 👩💼. None of my business. 2 years ago it was my business but see I really don’t have to care of that anymore. 🤷♀️ that is up to magic divorce. But it matters to Max. Everything you do matters Max. Everything you don’t..
I don't get how this curse works, wouldn't he have to know hes a bad father in order for the lie auto-response to activate? So, how can he be taken off guard?
Yeah I notice that. 90s women looked older. Maybe not by age but by maturity. They dressed more professionally. Now you have 30 year old women dressing like they're 22.
The way he treats his son is better than 99% of Fathers out there. He has a career that keeps him busy but when he is around his son Max, he is beyond a great Dad. Shame on her for threatening to move to Boston..
I'm sure more than 1% of fathers out there don't constantly lie to their kids and constantly disappoint them. He's certainly better than many dead beat dads. But as Jay says in Modern Family "The biggest part about being a good dad is just showing up" which he failed to do constantly.
I think she would've been too young for this part. She was still playing the childless, single 20-something at this time, and this character needed to be someone that's been married, divorced, working a career and raising a child.
He’s a bad father until he chases his ways. But he’s always been more than a bad lawyer, but more of a crooked lawyer always looking to build his career as a lawyer, even if it means with his fast talking by lying and having no real proof of his client’s “innocence” by manipulating the system to believe him even if it means to overthrow the real justice (A liberal he is, to be exact). The kind of lawyer who gives lawyers, especially justice a bad name, and shouldn’t even be a lawyer. Especially his boss Miranda (even worse liberal).
In 2021 max would be a transgender gay black asian adult identifying as a packet of streamers with a limp and fletcher would be two of ‘their’ five non-binary guardians.
I think the bad father thing was always deep inside Fletcher, but he was such a good liar that he even lied to himself.
He loved his son, but he didn't realize that being a good father is more than loving your child and making them laugh when you're there, it's about putting your child's wants and needs ahead of your own and about guiding and supporting them on their life's journey.

His face the realization he didn't know he was... X x
I do think deep down he knew he was but he was such a good liar that he buried that fact to himself with a pile of lies he made.
That acting was so perfect, it really makes you feel in that moment
Just like the court room scene where he yells "this man is a good father, and children are not leverage" hits me in the feels every time
I don't think he's a bad father he just made alot of mistakes and never realized it, he cares for his son for sure
Very touching moment
He's actually not a bad father the only bad thing is that he just doesn't spend enough time with Max
He was bad at the time, because his son isn't a priority in his life. Even when he did anything, it was the bare minimum.
