  • It’s time I publicly reveal my machine addiction. I wanted to share a little history about how I got into the maker space and the types of projects I’ve started and plan to work on here in the future:
    • DIY fiber laser cutter
    • DIY fiber laser engraver
    • Plastic granulator
    • Badminton shuttlecock launcher
    • Badminton Faster Footwork Trainer (fasterfootwork...)
    • 3D-printed shuttlecocks
    • Generative music machines

    About 12 years ago I started building a CNC router so I could make parts to build a robot arm. MANY MANY machines later and a full on career change into DIY CNC world, I haven't built my robot arm lol

    Haha. I loved the story. In my case, I also discovered 3d printing, soon I was building a lowrider and then a co2 laser appeared to reform. I don't know what the next step will be, but I hope to have half of its capacity one day. Greetings from Brazil.

    Addiction is real and you are going to have to admit you have a problem...with machine space.
    BTW, it is too late for me, I am too far gone...And I have even less floor space (now) than you do...Now it is a continual challenge, especially when building airplanes, I have to move everything; wheels are your friend.

    I would be very interested in the music software you mentioned. What technology / frameworks did you use?

    • @diyfiberlaser
      @diyfiberlaser  Рік тому +1

      It's all JavaScript using web audio API for the music timing, triggering, and sound generation and the UI is custom drawn using the HTML canvas. I've tested using this kind of UI to control an Arduio via bluetooth and it seems to work well, then I can use the Arduino to control solenoids, motors, switches, etc. to play the physical robotic instruments...that's the plan anyway!

  • @Rob_65
    @Rob_65 Рік тому

    That warning came a bit to late. My dad was already very proficient in collecting nice tools and equipment and I pursued that legacy.
    One problem I have is that it is very hard to get rid of the machines that I hardly, or not even at all, use anymore. I still feel sorry that I had to let go of an old Fanuc robot arm - that would have made a fun retrofit project to use as a parts loader for the CNC mill and the lathe that we will hopefully get this year.
    But with only 1300 m2 (14,000 ft2) for business and hobby combined there is a limit to the amount of space I can allow my hobby workshop to take...

    OK, but where is your plasma cutter? Those Arc Droids look pretty tempting right?

    • @diyfiberlaser
      @diyfiberlaser  Рік тому

      I will mostly be cutting thin material so I went laser instead. I do like the tracing feature and the small footprint of the Arc Droid, but don’t you still need a water table? If it sits outside of the table, it would end up taking up more room than the traditional gantry style machines.

    • @Joe_Bandit
      @Joe_Bandit Рік тому

      @@diyfiberlaser I've seen someone use a table with an extractor fan on the bottom rather than water. The table folded down from the wall so the footprint was pretty small. Not that I'm trying to sell you on one more machine. But think about cutting out parts from plate whenever you feel like it 😁

    How can one save up enough money for all the machines? Any tips or tricks?

    • @diyfiberlaser
      @diyfiberlaser  Рік тому +1

      Most of my “major” machines were purchased in a broken state for much much cheaper. I gradually got better at troubleshooting and I would search eBay and FB Marketplace until I found a good deal on a machine I thought I could fix. That’s how I’ve been able to do it

Lots of potential to focus on all things fiber and safely cutting different materials for now. Looking forward to some more great content. Not an easy subject, so well done!

    Hello, my name is Jeff, and I am an addict. Alas, I started as a firmware engineer, then an electronics engineer and here I am 40 years later with more "homemade" machines, CNC controllers, building upgrades (do you really need a pole barn that big? YES!) than I can count. But you know what, I love it and wouldn't trade it for the world. Love your channel bother! P.S. My music studio is also in one of my "hobby" outbuildings.

      The family was relocated to a large forest preserve away from homes, then several days later we discovered there was one more baby hiding in the wall. My wife found a wildlife rehabilitator who could take it in, they raised it until adulthood, then released it into the wild.

      The only one I still have is the J-Cut 6090, it's a good size for most of my projects. If I need a large format again, I'm not sure what I'll do...probably build one.
