  • I've covered BMW's and their crazy depreciation on this channel before, but the good news is you can get a lot of car for your money. Example: the BMW 335i. It's an amazing car but there are some thing you should consider before you take the plunge and buy a used one. There are some very common pitfalls with these cars and on this episode I dive into each and present a buyers guide to the 335i

    I own a 2014 BMW 335i M Sport with 92K miles
I am just now seeing some oil leaking from the back of the valve cover very little. ($30)
My wheel bearings are shot. ($150 for the pair)
And transmission fluid change ive also had to do ($320 for the kit)
    Aluminum Charge pipe ($220)
ALSO when you are buying the F30 335i the charge pipe will fail under full acceleration as it is stupidly made of plastic so I highly recommend to replace that before anything else.
I do all my own work.
These have been the issues after 92K
    Hope this helps !

LazAffects I have the same year, & same model at 68k miles now. As soon as the warranty ends, 1st priority is charge pipe. It was a CPO, so the warranty was extended a little. So far, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, and radiator hose was replaced. Should I be worried about the bearings, and carbon build up?

    • @laz2858
      @laz2858 5 років тому +5

Rollan you should do the carbon cleanup at 70k which is recommended. Your bearings can last a while depending on your driving habits. You’ll know when they start going bad. It’ll sound like a bad tire or something.

@@laz2858 Thanks for the info. I do spirited daily driving, running errands as a stay at home dad. Once a month, I'll open it up, and redline the thing and hit around 120mph when I have an open road. Since I'm still under warranty, I will check with the dealer if my maintenance package includes the carbon cleanup.

@@TheCarBro Both are very doable jobs but definitely take a good amount of time for someone who isn't a certified mechanic like myself. My advice is to just go slow and be careful, keep track of all the parts and label your bolts, and have a sheet on hand with the torque specs that you need. With the direct-injection design everything is over the top of the valve cover and needs to be carefully removed ( take extra care with the PCV hose and look up a video on how to remove because it WILL break if done wrong). The HPFP is in a tricky spot under the air intake manifold and there are some tricky connectors and brackets to be aware of. Hope this helps you out.

2007 to early built 2009 n54 with high mileage (90k) also have cam bearing ledge issues causing timing to slip and can possibly bend valves. Also with age, on any year 335i the crank hub can slip also causing timing to skip. Both can cause serious damage and costs from 2k-5k to fix.

I owned numerous bmws and one of them was a 2007 e90 335i sedan sport, premium, cold weather packages and few other options that got me to slightly over $60k in late 2006.
It was the first year of the turbo 3 series and if I’m not mistaken it was first year of bmw using boost since the 2002ti in the 1970s. Long story short,it was reliable for the first 40-50k miles besides the fuel pump stranding me once at 22k miles. They also had issues with the brake pad sensors making noise after a few thousand miles, you would get a squeaking noise coming from your wheels everytime you moved and it drove me crazy enough to remove the brake pad wear sensors untill they made new ones to address the issue. I’m very grateful I bought an extended warranty from bmw after the original one ran out because after 40k miles the problems started to occur, non stop problems with cooling components (as usual with any bmw). I had the sport package so the sport suspension and the staggered 18 inch rims chewed through my bushings, tie rods, control arms and other suspension components... living in New York didn’t help. The ride was very rough with the sport suspension and bmw using run flats with 40 series tires up front and 35s in the read didn’t help plus those run flats wore out quick and uneven due to the crap New York roads and/or sport suspension issues and those run flats aren’t cheap! I got sick of the issues so I traded it in for an e60 2007 550I sport that had fun flats too and even though it had the sport suspension the car was much smoother then the 335i. The 550i gave me no problems besides a check engine light came on and it was one of the four oxygen sensors. I ran it up to almost 80k miles without any other problems so I traded it in for a newer 550i with the face lift and again sport package but this time bmw started to put M body kits on it... looked exactly like an M5 except only one exhaust cutout instead of dual like the M5 and different 19 inch rims with no run flats thank god! The car drove better and smoother with 19s and no run flats then the one I had with 18s with the run flats! Great car very reliable but I got bored and loved the X6 looks and when bmw announced the 4.4 twin turbo V8 to go in there,I was sold and it’s been HELL ever since :(

The car in this video has the bog standard non sports auto zf8. If you drive a car with the zf8hp and set the transmission to its sportier setting, the gear shifts are noticeably harder and faster than the non sports version.

Hi EatSleepDrive Nice work, there. I own a 2011 320i coupe and got the following fault codes when I went for a check up from my mechanic. 0030C1 DME:Engine-oil pressure control, static. I was adviced to change the Oil Pressure Sensor, I was also adviced to consider changing the Hdraulic Valve. Would it be safe to first change the Oil Pressure Sensor then later the Hydraulic Valve?

The N55 doesn't have the carbon issue. I asked my service advisor about walnut blasting on our 2012 535l (N55) and he said BMW fixed the internal ventilation and carbon doesn't buildup like the N54. He said they only WB the N55 almost as a last resort to fix other drivability issues. Our 2012 N55 has 84k pretty trouble-free (did have the CPO warranty replace the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets) miles.

thomas rwx zero problems. Just went through and have checked everything since I got it. Only things I’ve done maintenance wise is change the fluid in the transmission because the bmw dealership recommended it . Put a jb4 intercooler charge pipes andbms intake on it with my Christmas bonus check lol. On 93/and 30% ethanol on map 7 it’s dumb quick. Next upgrades are going to be suspension and brakes. Then I’m done with it because it’s a daily driver. Once I can afford something else I’ll get a newer one and start putting power to this one.

@@alexbolduc3598 Hey Alex, I've had the car since 2017 and still think its tons of fun to drive. The flagship I6 engine and xdrive combo give amazing power and handling, making this car ideal for any sort of highway driving. And for a 7 year old car, I don't find it missing any key features that other non-luxury brands might be lacking. Like others have commented, the repairs are costly if you take it in to the shop, which I've only recently had to do due to a leaky engine gasket. But even for the gasket, there are a ton of tutorials here which can make the repairs DIY if you have the correct tools.

Cam follower, HPFP and gaskets. Hard to find stick shift now, Im feeling that I missed a chance too make a little supercar. Never even drove the E90 (licence was at stake) stayed practical. 1 question E90 manual gearbox how is it. All Audi's gearboxes are shaky, worst being 1-2.

Can you do a review on a 4 series F32 as well as the N20 engine ? I previously owned an 2007 E60 528i and 2010 E92 335i, but I bought a 428i around the same time as you got the 335i, F32 have now come down in price where I think its also a bargain find and it's a step up in terms of handling compare to the F30 yet retaining all the comfort benefit of the F30. N20 engine having the same ZF8 gives a decent punch off the line and minimal difference to the N55 from 0-60, only at high speed the difference got big. But the N20 as a daily has a much greater fuel economy over the N55 engine, earlier N20 had timing belt issues and such but were resolved by 2014, and it had been reliable since it's replacement. I just like to hear your view on it. Thanks.

    • @TysonHook-22-
      @TysonHook-22- 4 роки тому +1

@@ryanallen4078 This is the first im' hearing of this myself but my guess is its allowed because they're the same plate numbers just different shapes, being that BMWs are imports they've been primarily styled to cater more to the country of origin then to foreign countries ... BMW, Audi and other European vehicles front ends, are always designed to perfectly fit a UK plate without ruining the cars aesthetics, whereas a US plate on the front of any European vehicle always looks out of place and often ruins the nice clean look of the front end. Just google Audi or BMW with US plates and look how much uglier the front license plate placement is in comparison to a UK styled plate.
I'm hoping this can be legally done in Canada too, cause when I get myself a BMW i'd much, much rather a UK styled license plate then a standard north American plate.

    Belt tensioner
    Serpentine belt
    Plugs n coils
    Pcv valve - rob beck
    Coolant reservoir
    Oil filter housing cap
    Oli filler cap
    Vanos solenoids - Oem bmw
    Crankcase vent hose
    Both diverter valves
    Map sensor - intake side
Map sensor - charge pipe side
    Dealer repair :
    Valve cover
    Oil cooler
    Oil cooler gasket
    Oil filter housing gasket
    Oil pan
    Motor mounts
    Lower control arms
    Alternator
    Walnut blast intake
    High pressure fuel pump
    Injectors
    Transmission oil pan and service
    Upper radiator hose
    Rear differential seals
    And other items
The only thing I haven't changed yet that usually goes out is the starter, water pump and thermostat, or any turbo work.
Plus all your general maintenance. Oil changes, tires, brakes, etc. This car will destroy your wallet !! The only reason I did it is because my wife really likes the car. Its still very clean. M sports package etc.
I have a 2008 F-150 with 275,000 miles. No problems ever. No oil leaks. Runs strong 💪. No more bmws after this !!

Vc gaskets, electric water pump, oil fliter housing gasket x2, oil pan gasket and 2 weeks ago a new radiator. These cars are amazing and I would recommend one to any moderate wrencher.. consider the time and effort you give it as a family muscle car.. the 335i is not your average bmw. I've owned several others and trust me.. you will fall in love with all aspects of the car! great video. Don't be afraid to buy one w miles if proof of maintenance is in hand. Definitely agree with doing your own work but would extend it to all autos not just BMW. If your have a garage then buy a few tools, download a workshop manual and you'll almost always come out ahead of dealership costs. In addition you'll have tools and know how to last a life time. One thing to consider though if you only have one car then it may make things tough if you have a job that will take longer than a day.
