Also rub your finger inside radiator coolant reservoir and see if there is black carbon residue. This indicates a gasket leak that is contaminating the coolant fluid. Same goes for the oil, if its milky, it means there is a coolant leak mixing with oil.
Ive had my 335I for 4 years, and somehow, even at 112k miles, my water pump is still going strong. You were correct about those vacuum lines, had one literally crack open and my car went into limp mode about 2 years ago, wasn't too bad to get it fixed. I've spent probably around 2700 dollars on maintenance (including rotors/brakes etc). Been a pretty solid, reliable car, though everything is stock which is why ive found it to be pretty reliable. Not bad for a 13 year old car. Most I spent on the car was the fuel pump and the pesky injectors. Also did the oil housing gasket, valve cover gasket probably up next, can definitely start to smell some burning oil but very tiny amounts of oil leak, if at all.
If the car is leaking oil, and you see it all over the turbos, make sure it’s coming from the engine, not the turbos, if it’s from the turbos it could be an indication of the turbos seals failing
Hitachi turbos in e90 generation are pretty durable, just don't "cook" them too much as with all the turbos. Vanos is a thing in any petrol bmw after 80's but they are only known to sometimes have issues on complex double vanos systems like M models. Guy is right it's always them pumps on n54 engines, but it's a beast, handles 600whp and even more on stock internals. I would buy it if there were no retarded regulations in my country for engines above 2l of displacement, and damn petrol price in Europe. Instead I bought e83 diesel. :|
I am an old school mechanic, I purchased a 2007 BMW 335i twin turbo sedan. Gunmetal grey, with dark tinted windows, gotta say it is a eye catcher on the road. Over the years I add some modifications I new what the N54 engine can take in modifications and horse power. As of right now the outside looks like a nice luxury 4dr sedan. But under the hood that engine I modified is a beast. The engine puts out 800 horse power. It's funny when I am driving on the road and a Subaru, or mustange, or camaro, or dodge hellcat, or audi, or BMW . Pull up next to me then they take off, I let them exceed, then I punch it. Then what do you know, there are way back as I look in my rear view mirror. So never under estimate the outside of a BMW 335i sedan. Lol!
Am going to probably purchase a 2008 335i convertible today ... thanks for the info ... also, you are very personable, easy to listen to and good looking ... you should get your own tv show and who knows where that can take you ... good luck with everything!!!
Just as a quick tip: to tell what series injectors you have on an N54 motor; as in Index 12 vs say, 9, or any other version; simply take off the engine cover. Then you can easily look and see the injector numbers on the back side. It's the last number after the dash. You don't even need to pull them to see the numbers visibly.
I just got a 09 335i hard top convertible. This is easily the best and most fun car I have ever owned! I previously owned a 09 Mustang GT and the BMW blows it away! The performance and luxury of these cars is top notch!
Spot on with the water pump comment - went into limp mode going up hill. My 2011 335 xdrive coupe went at 109K mi. Oil pan gasket, radiator, shocks, brakes also potential costs at mileages nearing 100K.
if you buy a 335i either get the insured warranty, i now pay £61/mth and its paid for itself two-fold, or be prepared for huge bills. I have an 07 plate with 120,000 miles and have had everything done or buy a car with 120k miles on it with a long list of stuff done on it

Thanks for vid. I enjoy following your stuff. Question: I plan on getting e92, probably n52. Too many horror stories on N54. The N55 is likely less of a headache, but at three years more recent, they tend to be unaffordable. I've heard that N52 was port injected. That would be a plus for me over even the N55. I'm not sure having to walnut blast my valves all the time and all those HPFP failures are worth the turbo benefit, and I'm on a tighter budget. To be fair, BMW is not the only one foisting this stupid incomplete design that's expedient for sales but not good for long-lasting quality on us. Is it correct that N52 had port injection? I only found an article from australia on this, but don't know if their car versions were different than ours in USA. I can put up with a few extra mech problems in exchange for more satisfying driving experience, but I won't stand for getting stranded. So unless I have documentation that the water pump/thermo is relatively new, I'm going to replace them right off the bat. I don't want any plastic - - - - ! in the new pump. Is there a non-BMW water pump that's made better, like with all metal construction? Or otherwise are there any water pumps for e92 that are known to be longer lasting and more reliable than BMW's? Finally, have you ever driven an "i" model and then and "xi" version of the same model? EG a 335i vs 335xi? Can you feel much difference in the handling? Can you feel the extra weight of the xi when you drive it? Which would you say is more rewarding to drive? In war games movie, there was a quote “The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?” For BMW, it should be the only winning move is not to buy, how about just lease a BMW?
And remember if you find a nice one don't sell it like I did mine last week! Otherwise you'll find yourself depressed alone in the dark eating cambells soup listening to "one more try" by Timmy T ;(
Simply Car Things I actually had to get rid of it because my wife and I are expecting a kid next year and needed a four door :) the good news is I picked up an f30 335i m sport but I still miss my baby! Haha
U can get rid of all engine transmission noises with thick oil like honey brand its what all dealers and all smart reg people put in before sale and two weeks down the road all noises will re appear.
I own a 335i with a N54 engine. After having it for years now. Super fast and great to drive. However Do Not buy one. It has been a complete nightmare. A million things have gone wrong. The repairs are also pricey too. I used to swear by it, but I just got over it. Everything breaks, fast and often. Lease a new one if that. I got sick and tired of towing it to the shop.
@@lukeanderson6973 I highly recommend a 335i, it is super fast, and has a lot of potential, even with only a few mods and the sky is the limit too. I just think it is convenient when you have somebody who does the work for you very cheap, or do some of the work your self. Otherwise it will definitely get expansive. Pure maintenance at about 100k for me was too much.
@@jayd8919 yea man idk if I can do that I do all the maintenance on my g it's at 180k and surprisingly not much has gone wrong but I have been thinking about a 550i I feel like they would be beat on less than the 335i I'm only 18 btw
What's model of your car because i know if it least then 2009 he have a N54 it is planty of problems and if it 2009 and higher it is have N55 engine and it's good and doesn't have problems like N45

Yes, Great cars. Buying them can be the cheapest part of owning one. though. These cars are not cheap to repair, so maintenance is key. They are engineered to perform at a high level, so realise that you do need to "invest" in them and don't skimp on maintenance.Lovely and rewarding drive, when they are operating at 100%. Budget for walnut blasting, and get the M sport model if you can - so stable on the road. Like a lot of European cars, the headlining can come loose, and if you have a sun/panorama roof, this is very expensive to reline {approx $1500 USD} Love my E91 wagon.
Just Some Dude true but if you’ve driven these the open diff isn’t a huge issue unless you’re tracking it. Puts the power down nicely and has great controlled balance under oversteer.
Is 140k miles too much for a bmw 335i 2007 ? The price is around 9 thousand, I’m looking for it to possibly be my first car would you recommend it I wasn’t too sure about the mileage
Just bought a 2011 335i Coupe with 80k miles for $12k. Clean Carfax it was imported from Germany and was kept up to date on all services. I looked at a few bmw videos and Google BMW forums before buying. I noticed the oem charge pipe was switched out for a Cobb cp. Everything else is stock and doesn't look abused at all. The only thing I'm scared of is the water pump. I got a 3 month 3k mile warranty from BMW it's a CPO and hopefully I can break everything now so I don't gotta pay for anything later lol
Yes my car needs one so badly. However, I'd like to respray the roof, hood, and front bumper before doing a full detail. My hood has bad clear coat damage along with the roof unfortunately and my bumper has so much road rash it looks horrendous
Found a N54 135i Soft top convertible in black in ok condition, it has 100 something thousand miles and the guy said the lowest he’d take would be 4k. It runs and drives fine he says but here are the codes: P0442 P0222 P0123 2CF9 29F3 2D09 2CFA A0B5 A0C1 What do you guys think? Im thinking this will be around 5k in parts right? And i would want to do most of it myself to stay under 8k total cost, do you guys think this seems like a good deal or worth the time? I would have to do a 3 hour drive with it if I were to pick it up… Thoughts and opinions would be highly appreciated!!! Cheers
we recently bought one and the clutch makes a noise they told us its clutch chatter. I have researched and they say its common. Do you know if that is true. The car runs fine and have not had any problem except for that noise.
I have 137k original owner and on the original clutch and tuned for 50k miles. The clutch on some early cars makes noise because BMW over-engineered certain components, the clutch being one of them. Dual mass flywheels on performance oriented cars make a bit of chatter. This car is no different.
Good advice. You covered all the important stuff. with that said, I do think that a person getting a 335i should have the car inspected by a BMW mechanic before purchase. You will be buying a high performance car so, you need to know what you getting yourself into when buying used.
thanks. taking notes on everything you said. going to check out a 335i with 127k miles on it next week. bunch of mods/mhd tune i would love to PM you and ask you some questions i am sure to have after talking to the dealership next week. hopefully this will be a fun upgrade from my 330i!
@@hellocrzz5854 I know yours is 4 weeks ago, how was it? I have a test drive today 68k miles 1 owner 2008 N54 a little worried sounds too good to be true
I had a 2008 bmw 335xi. Bought it with 57k miles from BMW dealership, drove it for a year it immediately had problems with the ECU and the exhaust rattling from an emissions flap that they couldn't fix without replacing the exhaust. One day I was driving it and out of nowhere there was a very bad grinding sound from the engine, the car shut off I had to get it towed, no light ever came on. The dealership told me that the engine had spontaneously combusted and there were pieces of steel in the engine. This all happened at 68k miles. I highly recommend not buying this car used I lost 14k because a new engine would be 22k so i had to trade it in for 3. It was fun driving it, but all the quirks and problems are not worth it especially if you can't afford to dish out thousands of dollars whenever something goes wrong.
cars are always a damn gamble. the last few cars have been nightmares but u get what you pay for i guess. 2 cars needed transmissions. my current car needed a clutch, struts, coolant res cracked and leaked all over so had to get new belts, coolant hose bolt came loose and luckily i just had to tighten it myself. i'm sure a mechanic would have replaced the hose or something to make money. cars always need parts replaced at certain intervals or wear. manual clutches wear out every 60K or so (guessing) and need a clutch kit to replace it. sometimes a flywheel is needed as well. then maybe some brakes and tires. just replace the whole car! due to major depreciation i might get a 2014 audi a4 or bmw. 328 or 335. obviously 335 is the way to go for fun. so crazy a car can be $42K and 3 years later its $19. what i find appealing is the warranty that BMW has. i like the awd aspect of the audi but winters aren't too bad where i live now. if i was still in buffalo i would droll over the A4. back in the day, a neighbor had an old subaru. looked like a piece of crap, ugly. but it could drive in a snow covered field like a damn army tank. it was hilarious. that car could go anywhere.
So I'm thinking of buying this 335i for 5800, sedan , rest title , 115k miles , but kinda worried I might come across something bad on it what can I look out for around this mileage of the car and the owner has prove of maintenance and repairs he did on it since it was involved in a small bumper hit he has almost 3500$ in the car including the maintenance done to the car ? Help plz
Hello! I would like your opinion, it would mean a lot. I'm thinking about about buying a 2007 BMW 335i it has 70k miles on it and costs 9940 dollars is that a good deal?
Yo, I think you are doing a good job with these videos in terms or addressing certain topics, but I would really suggest you would cut down on uninformative elaborations and repeating same things few times over. I think is mainly the enthusiasts that watch your videos and they don't need long intros into what 335 is about. Usually I see and interesting headline name of your video thinking that's smth I'd like to hear on, but I end up not being able to wait through the long intros and eventually close the video without hearing the main points. Hey, its just my personal opinion if anything and I saying all of this with good will.
To be more specific, - in this video you talk about checking a/c, oil, coolant... I don't think it's needed, it's not my mom watching the video. IMO you should jump to turbo wg rattles, injectors, etc. right away, like n54 specific
Jonas Tikuišis thanks man i appreciate all the advice youve given me. I understand sometimes my videos can be long and ideas may run on so i'll make sure to take your advice into consideration for future videos

For BMW, it should be the only winning move is not to buy, how about just lease a BMW?
dang that's a clean ass engine!
Due to cost of parts and services I would certainly do preventative maintenance checks and services on BMWs.
Thanks for the tip.
Should I worry much if I want to get one as a hobby car? Like I'm not planning on doing more than 3-4.000 miles a year.
thanks for the awesome vid! currently thinking of buying one!
no problem! thanks for watching!
And remember if you find a nice one don't sell it like I did mine last week! Otherwise you'll find yourself depressed alone in the dark eating cambells soup listening to "one more try" by Timmy T ;(
Mic Raw want mine to buy?
Aw man im sorry to hear that! Why did you sell yours?
Simply Car Things I actually had to get rid of it because my wife and I are expecting a kid next year and needed a four door :) the good news is I picked up an f30 335i m sport but I still miss my baby! Haha
What's your opinion on the 335d? Maybe compared to the 335i?
U can get rid of all engine transmission noises with thick oil like honey brand its what all dealers and all smart reg people put in before sale and two weeks down the road all noises will re appear.
Super helpful video, thank you for going through all of these!
What do you guys think? An alpine white 4 door 2009 335I 80K miles? Or a 2011 2 door coupe 33I jet black 65k miles?
I own a 335i with a N54 engine. After having it for years now. Super fast and great to drive. However Do Not buy one. It has been a complete nightmare. A million things have gone wrong. The repairs are also pricey too. I used to swear by it, but I just got over it. Everything breaks, fast and often. Lease a new one if that. I got sick and tired of towing it to the shop.
Idk wat to buy then I want somthin wit a turbo and I can actually make fast I have a g35 rn but I cant be getting anything over 20k
@@lukeanderson6973 at the end of the day, more performance = more money, specially in maintenance, lol.
What's model of your car because i know if it least then 2009 he have a N54 it is planty of problems and if it 2009 and higher it is have N55 engine and it's good and doesn't have problems like N45
talk about a list of problems... when i was looking at getting an is300 everybody's like check for oil leaks.. that's it... valve cover gaskets go out.. oh and make sure the timing belt is changed every 90k.. that's it. lol bmw is like ok go grab a notebook and a pen
Budget for walnut blasting, and get the M sport model if you can - so stable on the road. Like a lot of European cars, the headlining can come loose, and if you have a sun/panorama roof, this is very expensive to reline {approx $1500 USD}
Love my E91 wagon.
BMW drift machine? They all came with open diffs
Just Some Dude true but if you’ve driven these the open diff isn’t a huge issue unless you’re tracking it. Puts the power down nicely and has great controlled balance under oversteer.
fixed - I got a 13IS with a Mfactory LSD.. and BQ tune.. :-D
Exactly my thoughts lol.
Thanks for the tips dude nice video
Moe Lebdeh thanks man!
Drift machine? Open diff
Purplepants228 haha
Lmao!!
Is 140k miles too much for a bmw 335i 2007 ? The price is around 9 thousand, I’m looking for it to possibly be my first car would you recommend it I wasn’t too sure about the mileage
For a first car? Moron
That squeak on take off is a u-joint, not a wheel bearing. Can’t service the joint itself, need a whole driveshaft.
I got a 3 month 3k mile warranty from BMW it's a CPO and hopefully I can break everything now so I don't gotta pay for anything later lol
congratulations man! that's actually a really good deal, and N55 nice!
I am having a fantastic fabulous day! Thanks 😊
Why is it when they show the 335i it's always the coupe version not the sudan?
Sudan is a country bro...
The Horror because the coupe is better
How many miles can you take the 335i to?
Id recommend a paint correction for your car ;)
Yes my car needs one so badly. However, I'd like to respray the roof, hood, and front bumper before doing a full detail. My hood has bad clear coat damage along with the roof unfortunately and my bumper has so much road rash it looks horrendous
Simply Car Things ah ok
Found a N54 135i Soft top convertible in black in ok condition, it has 100 something thousand miles and the guy said the lowest he’d take would be 4k. It runs and drives fine he says but here are the codes:
P0442
P0222
P0123
2CF9
29F3
2D09
2CFA
A0B5
A0C1
What do you guys think? Im thinking this will be around 5k in parts right? And i would want to do most of it myself to stay under 8k total cost, do you guys think this seems like a good deal or worth the time? I would have to do a 3 hour drive with it if I were to pick it up… Thoughts and opinions would be highly appreciated!!! Cheers
Keeping mine stock
May have been asked before, but years do you recommend? Thx 👍🏾
I found a 2008 335i Coupe for 9k from a dealer. Do you think thats a good price? Its an auto by the way. Exterior and Interior look great...
Remedize miles? Bro get a manual trust me. A Twin turbo automatic wouldn’t be as fun as a manual
Are they easy to mod? 300hp puts it in the range of a Chevy Malibu.
SUPER easy to mod haha
we recently bought one and the clutch makes a noise they told us its clutch chatter. I have researched and they say its common. Do you know if that is true. The car runs fine and have not had any problem except for that noise.
Nancy Sanchez only if the clutch or flywheel has been upgraded
I have 137k original owner and on the original clutch and tuned for 50k miles. The clutch on some early cars makes noise because BMW over-engineered certain components, the clutch being one of them. Dual mass flywheels on performance oriented cars make a bit of chatter. This car is no different.
Good advice. You covered all the important stuff. with that said, I do think that a person getting a 335i should have the car inspected by a BMW mechanic before purchase. You will be buying a high performance car so, you need to know what you getting yourself into when buying used.
exactly
can i ask what trunk spoiler you had in this video?
So my 335i went into limp mode recently I turned it off then back on and it was running fine again. Do you know what it could be?
Daniel De La Mora were you low on gas when it happened? It could also be just a precaution if the turbos were getting hot
Honestly I don't remember. It seems to happen when I'm in sport mode driving slow or in traffic in drive but when I drive hard it doesn't happen.
Probably the Camshaft sensor or crankshaft sensor. Same thing happened to me.
thanks. taking notes on everything you said. going to check out a 335i with 127k miles on it next week. bunch of mods/mhd tune i would love to PM you and ask you some questions i am sure to have after talking to the dealership next week. hopefully this will be a fun upgrade from my 330i!
YunG good luck man! If youve got questions send me a message on instagram!
@@SimplyCarThings whats your handle? im guessing its not the simplycarthings that has 3 followers lmao
hey i know this comment is from like 2 years ago but hows the 335i now? i might be picking one up this Saturday. 07
What you need to watch for is the bmw emblem big mistake wow
So I'm thinking of buying this 335i for 5800, sedan , rest title , 115k miles , but kinda worried I might come across something bad on it what can I look out for around this mileage of the car and the owner has prove of maintenance and repairs he did on it since it was involved in a small bumper hit he has almost 3500$ in the car including the maintenance done to the car ? Help plz
Did ya go for it?
Curious, what’s your tire setup (size) front and rear?
Have you changed the rob bearings. $4000 later
Hello! I would like your opinion, it would mean a lot. I'm thinking about about buying a 2007 BMW 335i it has 70k miles on it and costs 9940 dollars is that a good deal?
it's a bit expensive. here in LA 2007-2008 costs from $6500 to $8500
Ive found 2011s in the 90k range for that price.
It’s the cost of the maintenance that’s much more on this car and problematic unreliability track record, but are engaging to drive.
I understand sometimes my videos can be long and ideas may run on so i'll make sure to take your advice into consideration for future videos
so just wait or skip thru the intro lol
It's really helpful your video thks a lot !!! From Mexico City
you're very welcome!
I found a 2011 from a older gentleman with 9k miles still wondering if its a good buy
Do it foo
yea that seems like a good buy, but it depends on the price really
I picked one up this weekend after watching your videos, where you located at?
Thanks man! Thats awesome congrats! I am in SoCal!
Thanks! Im in SoCal as well, DTLA to be exact. Are there any local clubs or meets around?
I can't tell if he's John Stamos or... Hahah good video tho
what are the rims on your 335i?
They are style 359m replicas!
thanks!
We'll just goto the lot 0 miles for mint condition 🤣
Would you ever put the M3 Body kit on your 335i? Or 335i fender kickplates?
No i personally wouldnt do an M3 body kit, but I would like to do an M-Sport conversion!
Simply Car Things just curious since I'm going to turn 19 in a few months and going to try to purchase a e92 335i coupe .. Whats insurance looking like for you for every 6 months or per month just wondering?
Video should have been titled "generic car buying advice-oh and by the way, pay attention to the charge pipe."
Does this also include the E90 335i n54 n55
Great video 👍🏾
thanks bro
