- Congratulations to James W Griffiths for his BAFTA award for Short Film for Room 8.
Room 8 is one of five different films from the same script: the Bombay Sapphire Imagination Series. Seeking to spark the imagination, we asked Oscar winning writer Geoffrey Fletcher to write a short script stripped of any stage direction.
The five most imaginative film entries were picked, produced and premiered at Tribeca Film Festival 2013.

I think that the number 8 might stand for the fact that if you turn it on one side, it becomes the infnite symbol, like the dimension, where you endlessly go out of the box and back into another one.
Nah it stand for room8 /#neverforgetti
room 8=room mate
Perhaps many have forgotten, but this idea of a mysterious box and stuffing items into it as they appear from above was implemented much earlier in the famous 3D cartoon "Delivery" 2005 !

We cannot escape from problems. If we try to do so, we'll end up in the same place, with bigger problems, while we are weaker and smaller.
UNDERRATED COMMENT. That's a sick interpretation :)
Thank you for comment.
It’s not that deep English teacher…
God
Not necessarily , each set of new problems includes perks from our resolves for older problems and new possibilities for more perks , your world can be bigger and more pleasant than your problems make it to be , do not despair there is always room for growth to be more joyfull and competent

The guy who summerizes movies with zero accuracy?
The only problem with this film is that it was too short!
Because it is a short film 😃 But yes. Too short.
+sunshineyon it was shorter than this guy I see in this red box I just opened.
sunshineyon The time always fuck
outside of our box it's much longer ;)
The only problem with this comment is tha
Fun things to not do:
-open the box and turn it upside down
-open the box and throw it up to the bigger world
-open the box and hold it tight, pick up the smaller box, then let go the normal box
I will lift him:D
Everyone will be lifted by an infinite number of meters!: It doesn't make sense!:D
+neuron1618 on the last point. The box wouldnt go anywhere because the bigger you is holding (with his fingers) the smaller box...which the smaller you is holding tightly. Youde be holding yourself.
Nnn

neuron are you madd!!!
This totally blew my mind, the power of imagination!
+Mr Ben Brown Holy f*ck, thanks mate for bringing my attention to this awesome piece of film work!! :)
This is the movie? It's a short film, what are you linking to?
amazing.. also considering everything YOU imagine is real :)

Room 8. Get it? "Room mate?" haha!
oh snap!
No it's called room 8 because 8 sideways is the infinity sign and the box is infinite
I DO GET IT! Thumbs up for that one!
i didnt get it lol, in german we call 8 "acht" and room = raum ....
Or OR! Room ♾ 👌
If they behaved like real people:
"What is it?"
"Little box that's recursively the room you're in, go on check it out."
"Oh neat, so I can rearrange the furniture without much effort. Now, why are we in prison again?"
+Alexander Peterson But the glasses guy is like the warden. He said send in another prisoner, so he WANTS the prisoners to fail
+Reed Passmore Who knows, maybe he is looking for some-one to succeed.
@@TheAGCteam
The analogy "thinking outside the box" would apply.
@@TheAGCteamin just respecting his wishes and not touching the box.
The fine cinematography really helped capture the mood of this piece. The part where he looks back to touch the finger is certainly amazing.
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and I hope God bless you to have a great day. I’m Jason by name from Overbrook Philadelphia and you where are you from?
Step one: Put a hole in the box
Lol
😂
Outstanding.
Sorry for being 5 years late.
I wish there was a part two or something. So many questions. This is brilliant. I wish it was a film. Amazing idea. Speechless. I want to know what happens next.
@@atrevino90 being honestly, room 8 is the better one.
@@wernick2249 but Nolan made it first...
Nah, a part two would ruin it. It's better to leave you with room for imagination.
These type of stories generate questions, stimulate thought. Conclusions are meant to be pondered but never confirmed by the creator.
I love it.
My 19 year old son just showed it to me as they showed it to his college communications class. WOW...pretty cool actually, some people have the greatest imaginations! Congrats Mr. Griffiths.
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and I hope God bless you to have a great day. I’m Jason by name from Overbrook Philadelphia and you where are you from?
so what would happen if i pick up my self
Omg your profile pic and that quuestion
Lol. Just like position yourself on your thumb and then flick yourself up into the best (and probably last) joy ride of your life
So i was thinking about this for like the last 5 hours,
Dimensions are infinite both bigger than his and smaller than his, so if he picked himself up he would have to hold himself infinite amount of times altough easier with every dimension while being held with infinity of himself.
infinity times no matter how little is equal to infinity. So he either couldnt pick himdelf up or if he tried jumping and then reaching in box and catching himself the mass that he held (If somehow secured so it doesnt slip out of his hand) would rip his body apart in every dimension.
If somehow he could pick himself up (e.x. air molecules get denser the deeper the boxes go) he would travel up the sped of light becasu every dimension is puling itself up in praticly no time (if he could survive traveling at the speed of light) he would be in a dimension where he is smaller than the smallest molecule.
And if he broke that box would every dimension turn in to the bigger one?
And as i was writing this i just figured it is 5 a.m. and i have a lot of important shit today.
RimanX It is not just picking himself up it is about picking himself 1000 times lighter than himself holding another himself 100000 times lighter than himself.....
any number (n>0) times infinity is infinite because infinity is an idea rather than an actual number.
Lets say his mass is X (x>0)
and that trough every dimension he gets Y (Y>0) times lighter than in previous dimension
to lift himself up he would have to lift up
(X:Y) * Infinity = infinity because no matter by how many times you divide a number larger than 0 by a number larger than 0 it will be bigger than 0
and no matter how small the number is multiplied by infinity it equals to infinity.
RimanX
I kinda get it now
But i think we would need a real mathematician for this.
I think the most sinister thing is that in the drawer at the end, the matchbox seen earlier is still vibrating furiously, one or two others are weakly stirring but most of them have become still. It's the unpleasant details that stick in the mind, don't you know...
(Speaking of which, director James W Griffiths probably saw a Doctor Who story called Planet of Fire at an impressionable age, methinks.)
bloody hell glad someone else someone noticed that.....when i watched it again you see it alot clearer and that gave me chills......scanned down and saw this comment.......good call!
The moment he epon the box and touch his own finger is like a mirror facing to each other. Endless replica.
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and I hope God bless you to have a great day. I’m Jason by name from Overbrook Philadelphia and you where are you from?
get a plate of food
eat all of it but a few bites
put it in the box
receive huge bits of food from heaven
eat that food into a few bites
put it in the box
repeat ad infinitum
Until you get to the atomic level. Then the unbreakable bits would become too big to eat.
😂 like recycling
haha
Poof we figured out the real quantum
@@Megacooltommydee Long before the atomic level, the bacteria in the food would get big enough to eat you.
Imagine if he shook the box before he opened it
What a deliciously dark video. How blind-sighted some people can be when presented opportunity.
(If the prisoner was smart, he should've realized it's not even possible to escape the room however you tried it.. you'd just miniaturize yourself into an increasingly large room..)
that would permit for him to escape trought the prison bars... But u can ask another thing!
Whats the point living small forever?
Rodolfo Pires that is why the glasses guy traps him in the matchbox, to eliminate that possibility.
Oh woops, I didn't realize the large gap at the bottom of the prison cell door. I thought it went down flush with the floor so escape would have been impossible without external help. But yeah, that was one of the other points: You'd have no way to enlarge yourself back up so you'd be stuck with that huge disadvantage and getting out of that prison would then be like trying to run your way out of a large city.
@@Rionx
That's what I was thinking. The obvious answer isn't always the best answer. As the big guy with the finger I want to smashed it through the bars.
Imagine the insects in that place.
This is probably the most amazing short story film I have ever seen.
A well deserved win at the BAFTA, good job! Can't believe I'm FINALLY seeing this.
Christopher Nolan did this first. It's called 'Doodlebug'.
This is the best short film ever made. Ive seen hundreds of them. Thats what I do. this is the best. Perfect. absolutely perfect. perfect length, perfect twist, perfect acting, perfect dialogue, perfectly laid out. The best short film ever made.
Am I the only one who had to watch this cos my teachers sent me a link cos of corona?
No? Ok
No, I had to as well. Did you have to say what your favourite film/ or TV series was? And then say what questions it makes you ask?
Yea I have to do creative writing on this shit
Same grade six work

Brilliant. Watching it was breathtaking. I screamed at the top of my lungs when I saw that giant hand reaching down--such wild imagination!

Fantastic ! This film idea is a gem ! Wow ! You deserve BAFTA ,yesssss!
Reminds me of "DOODLEBUG" by Nolan.
Yes
was thinking the same
Exactly
"Isn't it obvious." No it isn't what are you doing up there? What are you going to do? Escape out of here as mini you and spend the rest of your life being 5cm tall? walk the whole way home with everything being 200 times larger, get killed by a rat or a cat probably before that. Here's a bright idea get down from there and knock down those walls with your giant hands instead, and squish every guard that comes near here until this place runs out of guards and then walk out of here...
So smart!
A beautifully composed piece. Well done!
Terrific film! Definitely worth the award!
Very interesting video. Had to watch it several times. Love it. Would love to see more.

It was also inspired by Nolan's Doodlebug (1997)
I would spit until the cardboard softens and escape by scratching until I get a opening
OMG this was DOPE! GOOD JOB!
Why didn't he just smash one of the walls with his big hand?
Because if he breaks it -via the theory of the upper ceiling of the box- he would just open another portal from universe 'n' to universe 'n+1' as the portal limits are defined by the interior of the room.. He is forever trapped in that room, hence the name room 8 or the room infinity.. He can't coexist as two entities in one universe.
Love both of these guys above me. Comforting me there is still "outside the box" thinkers in this world
zoz0boy no such thing as outside the box :D keep dreaming as I do any way :D
Why didn't he just kill/incapacitate the guy in the room?
Andrey Filipov Why would he do that ? He doesn't know the other guy won't let him out, he thinks the other guy is stupid for not using that box to escape, thus the "so long, pal !", logically he has no reason to kill or harm the other guy.
I would watch this if it was a full movie! This is so creative
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and I hope God bless you to have a great day. I’m Jason by name from Overbrook Philadelphia and you where are you from?
OMG WHAT DID I JUST SEE RIGHT NOW???! AMAZING!!!!
OH MY GOD
THIS IS AMAZING
BRAVO !!! BRAVO !!!
3:54 "The Creation of Adam" by Michelangelo
Superb in its inventiveness. After watching 3 of these I came to see that the only requirement imposed on the creators is the exchange:
'Don't open it' ..'Why?'. .'You might regret it'. 'I'll take my chances'. . .'Why didn't you tell me ?'..
'Would you have believed me?'.. 'I don't know'.. 'Where are you going?'..'Isn't it obvious?' (no! it's not )
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and I hope God bless you to have a great day. I’m Jason by name from Overbrook Philadelphia and you where are you from?
My mind wasn't ready to process this thought early in the morning, should have watched a little later during the day .. What else I can which people haven't up till now.
Wow this is incredible!
This was great! 6-min piece that has more originality and idea than all the blockbuster movies combined! Sure, more you think of this (and i´m usually thinking these type of things when i should go to sleep), more you find paradoxes, but the main point is that-you-think. =) Well deserved win!
this is the best short film that i ever seen in my life.
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and I hope God bless you to have a great day. I’m Jason by name from Overbrook Philadelphia and you where are you from?
The descriptions were very good :D
This is an AMAZING idea!
This reminded me of the multi-universe boxes in Futurama
Ok... so I figured it out. If he picked himself up and carried himself out of the box, he would instantly be travelling at an infinite speed through an infinite window of successively larger boxes. He'd be travelling at an infinite speed because the speed of his arm movement as he carries himself out of the box is magnified with each larger version of himself, and as there are an infinite number of larger versions of himself, the speed at which he's pulled out of the box is infinite... right?! So he would probably die immediately from whiplash.
but what if pulls the box out itself ???
You actually can't pick your self up cos you need something to stand on so you can apply the effort of lifting anything up. So if you try picking yourself up, the bigger you needs to do that and the you bigger than that also needs to do that ultimately you're all getting lifted and for that to happen some version of you needs to stay stagnant on ground for any lifting to happen
That's such a paradoxical situation omg really cool film!
amazing, deserves more views

Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed this and it is a STUNNING short but this is literally Doodlebug though.

This is brilliant omg.
This is a real life dream I have had so many times in my life this blew my mind someone thought of this and made a short film. This is exactly what happened to me in my dream!!!!!!!!!!
Damn, that was amazing. The serious tone was a great start and tempo to this crazy abnormality.
The acting even though short was greatly performed, strong story. Love the mystery and horror of it. 9/10.
I wonder what the hell beat this Short Film. I'm only starting to watch the 2014 Short Films for inspiration and study.
Although it says Winner but then says Nominated is confusing. So, it won, right?
I did an English paper on this in college. So much imagery behind everything. I'm agnostic, but this has so much christian stories imbedded within the visuals. Beautiful movie. I show this to people all the time.
The box is red, like Eve's apple that she bites. The old man clearly acts like God and tells him not to use this box/apple.
3:50 looks almost exactly like Michelangelo's painting of "The Creation of Adam"
The whole scene itself is clearly a description and interpretation of God's decision of purgatory.
@@Super0497 That's brilliant.

I liked it a lot because it was really good, especially the ending, I didn't see that coming.
really good,food for thought..
Who is the box owner? And why did he warned the prisoner? Is he the god himself, meanwhile then he punished the prisoner for knowing too much *such a divine secret*?
What would happen if the prisoner killed the box owner?
Or what would happen if the prisoner was not curious enough to open the box and had contented with only reading the book?
Was this book holding the truth about that box?
And what about all those people in the match boxes? Will they ever be sat free? Or this is just like hell?
Very nice, i really enjoyed it, i think this one is better than Water song but the whole idea is really good :D

Mind blowing, masterpiece
Wow that's fucking awesome!

THIS IS AWESOME OMFG
my mind = BLOWN AWAY! WOW!
Why would you do it that way. I would pick the smaller version of me and take it out of the box and since I myself would be taken out of my box and so on I would create a paradox and maybe break the universe
then ever bigger version of you would pick you too?))
Ksenia Sevidova of course, it would become a big chain of myself holding myself and being moved outside the box but since the bigger version of me is being moved outside the bigger box himself and so on up to infinity I would either get out of the biggest version of the box (if it exists) or the whole universe would just collapse :D
Matthias Kammerl Mathmatically, you wouldn't be able to pick yourself up, because on the other side there is hanging an infinite number of smaller you's which are pulling in the opposite direction.
isn't that similar to the story of Adam when God warned him beforehand that he should not eat from the tree in Eden? Doesn't it mean that human pay the bill because of his curiosity to know what's beyond? or that the man in prison or God when warning them suggests that they knew it would not be for their own good to open the box or eat from the tree since that beyond in particular will be harmful for them? if that so, man should take all the responsibility of what becomes of him, and the culprit here is his curiosity
nope. its just that this idiot didnt know how portals worked
yeah
it's an amazing comment !
Wow, thanks for your analysis ,Bravo 👏👏👏
that's sick, being locked in and when he escapes he is trapped, awesome!
So nobody gonna talk about the reason that matchbox was moving because was person inside lol 😅

What if you open the box and throw it out of the room?
How does this not have more views ?

2 questions:
1: What if i pull the other guy sitting there, would that make me promote to his position? Making me a god?
2: What if i take box with me and leave the box?

So it's a recursive scale function.
that gave me chills
So amazing... i loved it!
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and I hope God bless you to have a great day. I’m Jason by name from Overbrook Philadelphia and you where are you from?
I would have picked myself up and lifted myself out of the box.
That would mean you're lifting every single one of you out of the infinite boxes, while being lifted out yourself! Where does it end!?
+Vignesh Sivakumar It's not possible. You would be infinitely heavy and unable to lift yourself. If you start to lift you pull yourself and every other self they are holding up of the ground. This combined with the fact that you have to push off the floor to lift, which you couldn't do if you are being lifted. This means infinite weight so you would rip off whatever you grabbed, be that shirt or arm.
I've been wondering something. What if the guy grabbed himself in the box, and pulled himself up ? What would happen ? I don't think he could really pull, but I don't know how it would end.
I was wondering the same!
the guys get pulled by the bigger while the bigger guy will get pulled by another bigger guy. if the dimensions are infinite then there will be infinite guys to be pulling so he would be stuck in a loop.
That's a possibility.
What I though is he would be able to give some momentum to himself, then he would be immediately put down by the gravity force.
Something like that.
What might be interesting is knowing what would happen if the guy grabs himself directly from the box (2) that is in the box (1). What would happen to the He that is in the first box ?
He would be grabbed by the guy in the bigger box :p
This is some inception like shiz here damn. It's so good
Room Infinity(written vertically)! Mind-blown.

What a brilliant idea!
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and I hope God bless you to have a great day. I’m Jason by name from Overbrook Philadelphia and you where are you from??
So what would have happened if he just picked himself out of the box?
+MrKHall2002 You would be infinitely heavy and unable to lift yourself. If you start to lift you pull yourself and every other self they are holding up of the ground. This combined with the fact that you have to push off the floor to lift, which you couldn't do if you are being lifted. This means infinite weight so you would rip off whatever you grabbed, be that shirt or arm.
+Bill S Oh ok that really helps. so really he would not be able to lift the smaller version at all since itself would also be holding on to another smaller version and that would repeat infinitely causing infinite weight. interesting. thanks for the reply, really fun concept to think about.
+Bill S The weight would be infinitesimal. So you'd definitely be able to.
+MrKHall2002 Adding infinite amounts of a person does not necessarily mean infinite weight. It depends on the rate at which the weight is decreasing. For example, if you add 1 +1/2 +1/4+1/8+... infinitely, you get 2 exactly total. Obviously, the weight here in this video would be far less than half from a smaller person to a bigger one, so I'm fairly confident your total weight would converge in the pick himself up example.
but isn't half of infinity still infinity? though it is logical to think the weight of the smaller versions is decreasing in relation to the size changes there will still be an infinite number of them too add together. after a certain point the increase in weight will seem insignificant but that doesn't mean weight is not being added. (going by the half life example, 1 + 0.5 + 0.25 etc, etc, + 0.001953125 + 0.000976525 + etc. etc.) meaning that at every contact point between versions there will be weight added, now given that the weight can be added infinite times we conclude at infinite weight.
Concept is lifted from Christopher Nolan's "Doodlebug". Why is no one pointing it out here?
Seriously, the fact that he didn't credit Nolan makes me think one of two things. It was either stolen (conceptually) or that Nolan's film was lifted from another source as well!? BAFTA shoulda caught on to this, wonder what they came up with.
Beautiful.
That was great!
