Leslie West was born in NYC grew up in Hackensack, NJ but boy could he sing and play like a southern boy!! lol!
He was a big boy too
"Vicksboig"
One of the GREATEST ROCK SONGS EVER! Leslie West was a master of rock.
I saw Leslie West open for Foghat back in the mid '70s. He absolutely rocked it. Foghat sucked, the crowd booed them, wanting West to return. Leslie did return a few months later, headlining his own tour by then. He rocked it big time, all over again.
Lost Leslie West December .2020
@@raymo6795 RIP.
@@darrell9546 Land of Milk and Honey is another shaker.
Actually the BEST rock song ever!
Certainly one of the heaviest riffs ever recorded.
50+ years later...STILL one of the heaviest!
Like a fine wine, it delights the senses with the delicate, fruity-notes of... oh say a BOC Godzilla, and yet it somehow manages to finish like a provacatively-subtle Sabbath's Iron-Man.
Remarkably, it's somehow tastier than either!
And you can't forget the cowbell
Leslie West and Felix Papalardi were a great duo . KILLER classic !!!!
😎Hey! Mountain was a TRIO! Shout out to Mountain Drummer Corky Lange. Now I must tell my Mountain Live @ Felt Forum NYC NYE 1973...
As a native Alabamian and lover of southern rock, I have to say that this song is a little stronger than just southern rock. It is actually the roots of all rock. It is one of the few songs with a hook that you know from the first note like Smoke on the Water, Stairway to Heaven, All Right Now, Highway to Hell, Free Bird and a handful of others that transcend time. You know them immediately.
And this Californian absolutely agrees, brotha'.
As a northerner,
Southern Rock is my favorite genre.
Even though it does have that southern rock style Leslie West, legendary lead guitarist was from Long Island, NY!
Alabama native here, too, brother. ROLL TIDE!
@@joelliebler5690 Yes indeed. And there were a few "southern" Hard Rock bands as well.
Mountain... one of the greatest yet highly underrated groups in rock
Mountain was formed by the great "Leslie West." Leslie passed away a couple of years ago in his mid 70s. One of the great "Classic Rock" era guitarists. This is one of the most famous guitar Riffs ever. So Funky and Heavy. Great stuff.
And Felix's shot him. Jim
@@bert0522 Yes she did. A crying shame to this day.
Consider when this song was released...1970! It still sounds massive to this day. I call it one of the greatest hard rock songs to ever be recorded. Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog" would be right on it's heels:)
light years ahead of its time, sabbaths paranoid ALBUM same, ahead of its time both released dam near the same time.
Sorry, I say they were all Right On Time. You had to live it, @@icmman7
@@amrak5028 totally agree
This song slaps you around, picks you up, & gets you groovin'. Never gets old.
I met the drummer for this band at a tiny little Dive Club in Nantasket Beach Massachusetts. Called the C note. Maybe 10 yrs ago. His name is Corky Laing. I showed up early cuz I wanted to meet him. He was shooting pool by himself. I walked over and I said "hey man do you want to play?" And in the most terrified and disheveled manner you could possibly imagine he jumped up, put the pool cue down and said "I don't know man I was just checking my eyes". didn't see him again until he went on stage. It was him and two girls. one playing bass one playing the guitar and he was singing from behind the drum kit and put on one of the better small venue live shows I've ever seen. But I will tell you right now it looked like never left the seventies.
Funny you say you like the "southern drawl" because Lesley West was a Jewish kid born in Jersey and grew up on Long Island. Regardless, he sure did write and record a totally badass southern blues classic with Mississippi Queen.
As soon as I saw the title I knew there was gonna be some serious stank face. Top 3 riff all time. No question. And with Corky Laing banging on the skins and Felix Pappalardi thundering in on bass in time with Leslie West's, this is one of the heaviest songs ever produced.
Mountain was actually a NYC group, as both Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi were New Yorkers, while drummer Corky Lang was Canadian. This song came about when Corky had a party at his place and there was a girl there from Louisiana he had never met. He said he started playing around on his drums, hoping to impress her, and laid down this beat. He said he didn't win the LA girl, but he later played it for Leslie, who wrote the music over it, wrote out some silly lyrics, and voila, a massive hit.
As an FYI, bassist Felix Pappalardi produced Cream's 2nd and 3rd studio albums, as well as their goodbye live album.
BJ, Lesley West, the vocalist and guitarist is from the Bronx NY.
Nice Jewish boy. Attended Shul twice a week.
A hard driving rock anthem. ❤. Leslie West RIP you gave us a song that will last well beyond our time.
RIP Felix. Jim
That's Leslie West on guitar and vocals. Sounds like southern rock, but he's from New York. The bass player is Felix Papalardi who, before he formed Mountain, produced Cream's first album. I believe he's from New York as well.
Nice Jewish boy from Longggg Island....
Yep...born Leslie Weinstein....@@barrycohen311
Nah, it was Cream's third album, Wheels of Fire, I believe.
Leslie West on vocals. A great rock voice!
The singer, Leslie West had a great sense of humor. He had a cameo in the movie The Money Pit from 1986 or so, with Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. He was hilarious.
Loved this song since I was 12. Of course I never understood the lyrics at the time. I just knew it rocked!
Perfect song. Simple , great vocals , one of the catchiest hooks ever . This song grabs you by the collar and slaps you a couple times right from the start .
Leslie West had a real cool voice and to me one of the greatest guitarist ever. When this great song came out not all the stations in my area would play it. Was 'too different', glad one happenin station played it. To me one of the greatest songs ever. Loved it back in the day still do 1970 was a great yr for music!!!
I saw Mountain live in the early 70s they were fire.
Great reaction! I was in High School when this was released and loved it then. Saw Mountain live in early 2000s and it still sounded great. Then you play it now and I'm lovin' it all over again.
This tune is spectacular and the southern rock of my time yall!! Asia and BJ, you both are good souls♥️♥️♥️
Except they’re from New York.
@@sukie584 true that, however…I think there yankee blood wanted southern roots . 😊
Yes they are, but they were drunk on Delta Swamp Juice for this one🤣@@sukie584
A true classic!!!! Thanks for reacting!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
No problem 😊
Hey guys! Happy New Year! Thanks for throwing us Boomers a bone. 🫶🏼 Cheers🥂
Happy new year!!
Mississippi Queen was a river boat & The Cajun Lady was dancer on the boat. She sprung him!lol GREAT reaction video
GREAT REACTION! You two are the best!!!!
Thank you!! 😁
Now this is a BANGER
Mountain was kinda like 2 bands in 1 depending on who was singing. Leslie West (guitar) sang this one. Felix Pappalardi (bass) also did lead vocals. Check out Nantucket Sleighride. Sounds like a different band.
One of most recognized. , played and best riffs in rock!
Wow.... a blast from the past. Still sounding 🔥 all these years later.
Leslie West .. 'The Great Fatsby.' A spectacular guitarist and vocalist.
I never get tired of watching first time reactions of music I first heard in the 70s. Keep on reacting. 👍
Thank tou for doing the version by Mountain. This is the music we heard on the radio. Such a jam!!!
I had the good fortune to see Mountain in concert four times. Leslie West was a tremendous guitar player who would rock the whole building. You should also check out "Never in My Life" and West's Guitar Solo on the live album Twin Peaks.
Happy New Year to you both. When this came out it was Heaviest tune on the radio besides Sabbath🤘🤘
Oh, thanks for this!! My older brother would play this song over and over on his 'new' turntable when this came out. Made me a Mountain fan for life! They had a song that still haunts me. "Nantucket Sleighride' An emotional rollercoaster of a song loosely based on a true story of an 1800's whaling ship and it's crew. It didn't end well. But the song is quite brilliant!
Freekn amazing that these guys nailed the gritty southern Blues Rock, including vocals, yet these guys were from ......Long Island NY! Legendary!
I saw Mountain in 1971 & 74. They really tore it up 🎸!!
Leslie was from Long Island NY. I saw them in 1977. Loudest concert I’ve ever been to
Leslie West! Saw them a lot in clubs in the 60s in California ( "the bank" ) Several bands in one night : Mountain. Spirit. It's a beautiful day. Buffalo Springfield. Elvin Bishop.
That's quite the lineup. I'm jealous.
New Year's blessings to y'all 🙏
So appreciate your reactions .
The distinctive tone and vocals of this song are famous 50 years later, no end in sight!
If you think you know what MOUTIAN sounds like by listening to MISSASIPPI QUEEN , you have only heard half of the range they offer..... Nantucket Sleighride shows off the other lead singer (Felix Pappalardi) Mountain had to offer!
To hear Lesli West and Felix Pappalardi sing together you MUST listen to FOR YASGER"S FARM, sweet and hard by turn through the song, very NICE!
I have always loved this song.. Not ashamed to say I loved it since it was NEW! lolol
Leslie West had the TONE (Guitar and voice). I got lucky enough to see him live once and I described his tone as weighty, meaning the double entendre, and the guy next to me said that was about the only way to describe it.
I love when a guitar sings! Southern drawl straight from Queens NY. Mountain, from NYC. Canadian drummer - yay! Leslie West, great singer guitarist!
It’s a soulful, down in mud, hittin’ on tha 1, funky song! You know when it makes you bob yo head, it’s funky!
This Great Southern rocker was actually born Leslie West Weinstein in New York City. He is actually of the Jewish faith.
One of the greatest music sounds and song of all time watching movies Woodstock
You should have seen this band live in concert. Amazing! Been there and done that.
Some might say there’s a Southern Rock vibe but Mountain was a Blues Rock band from NY singing about a Southern experience!
If you want to hear one of the rockingest tunes ever, listen to the live version of 'Roll Over Beethoven' by Mountain.The⁸
6min:40 sec live performance is the best.
This is my favorite song along with DO YOU LOVE ME NOW THAT I CAN DANCE? by The Contours, who actually did the first album of the Motown era.
The legendary Leslie West on guitar and vocals here. RIP....The band is from New York. They performed at Woodstock....
Mountain had several great songs. Nantucket slay ride, Theme of an imaginary western to name a couple.
I enjoyed the song too Asia & BJ. 😃👍
Takes me back to my favorite time of life!!
With all due respect BJ, Asia all you have to do is move to Mississippi and you would be the Mississippi queen !! …😉😉😉 👍
Composer, singer, guitarist Leslie West (RIP) was a nice Jewish boy from Long Island, New York. Thx for posting!
I wish this song was longer in length of time. But it was AM radio at the time. (Songs weren't played unless they were under 4 minutes or so) Gambling addiction ? Mississippi Queen the river boat gambling casino floating on the Mississippi River ? Great Great Rock song. Lesley West on lead guitar and bold vocals. My other great hits by Mountain "Nantucket Sleigh Ride" and the cover song "Roll Over Beethoven" (studio version's)
That southern drawl and southern rock is being sung and played from New York City boy Leslie West. He was fantastic.
The big guy was from my neighborhood. Real name: Leslie West from Forest Hills, NY. Used to see him play third base in the schoolyard. All 400 pounds or more of him. Hence the name Mountain. The bassist Felix was the producer of Cream (the fourth member as he did play with them as well.) With dainty little fingers. Listen to his pronunciation of "Vicksburg." Pure Queens. He was at Woodstock. Big money games-I know who organized them many years ago. That was Queens back then. RIP Leslie
Love seeing young people have the same reaction we had back in the day. Great reaction.
Mountain was from Long Island! they where considered "Heavy Rock" at the time. Asia rocks! Nice reaction!!
Always love seeing you guys groovin' in your own ways.
We play this in our band, always fun. I got a BIG cowbell on my kit you can hear across the club.
Makes the end of a long day so much better. ❤
I'm in my 70s and remember when this hit the radio like an earthquake. Thank you for your respectful review. I take back everything I've said about the younger generation.
Never In My Life is another great song by Mountain that comes in strong and never lets up, check it out next!
One of the baddest rock bands back in the 70’s. Super underrated. Love you guys and these videos. ❤
Leslie West was a great guitarist. Huge fat tones, super understated tasty lead playing. RIP to a master.
A banger right out of the gate, and it doesn't let up till the end.
Leslie West, lead guitar and vocals, was from Long Island NY.
More memories thank you ❤❤❤
watch the LIVE version of this-catch the guitar and an awesome drummer with a rare use of double base drums
He called her Mississippi Queen , she was Cajan lady a dancer on board the River boat Mississippi Queen , on the Mississippi river .
Drummer Corky Laing in 1969 - not even a member of the group at that point-
“We were at a funky beach place called 30 Acres in Nantucket [an island off Cape Cod], and because it was so darned hot everyone had their air conditioning on, causing the entire island to black out. A friend of mine was with a drop-dead gorgeous chick. She was from the south and wearing a see-through dress covered in flowers. Knowing it was up to him to keep the show going, Laing launched into a freeform drum solo, bellowing the words ‘Mississippi queen, do you know what I mean?’ repeatedly and hitting a cowbell maniacally - for more than an hour. I just had to keep this chick dancing, I was so turned on by her. But in screaming so loudly for so long I gave myself chronic laryngitis and screwed up my voice forever.”
coolest 2 minute song EVER
B.J. loves Leslie's southern drawl; funny thing is West from New York.
Okay that's it. Now that I've heard this song referred to as southern rock, my "Now I've heard everything" list is complete.
These guys used to play here on Long Island in 1971 at a little dive called the "Action House".
Great reaction, as always you guys!
I was knee high to a grasshopper when this song hit, and it stuck!!!
R.I.P. Leslie West 👊🏼🙏🏻
Long Red is another (but different) song that I have always liked by them. Any number of folks have sampled the opening drum lick from the live version of the song. Nantucket Sleighride (the song and the album) is just killer.
Great band formed in 1969 in Long Island New York. Check out "Nantucket Sleighride" and they do a great version of "Rollover Beethoven."
Got your seat belt on?? Maybe try "Theme To An Imaginary Western" next! I never got the full line about she moved better on wine all these years later! Saw Mountain around this time. Great! Leslie West was living in our general neighborhood at one time. Sometimes you'd see him, all 300-whatever pounds of him, bouncin' down the mountain road on a 4- wheeler. Thanks guys.
Heavy (Power Trio) Rock..Leslie West (Guitar/vocals) and Felix Pappalardi (Bass) were NY boys..It does have that Southern sound, for sure..Corky Lang (Drummer) was from Canada, I believe.
Really need to check out the LIVE performance of Mountain doing this song !!
Lesie West is a Legend. He's why I picked up a guitar !
Leslie West was the lead guitarist who was a Mountain of a man as well as a lead guitar player! He grew up on Long Island not far from where I live. Try there iconic tune Nantucket Sleighride!
Just a note y’all, also the Mississippi Queen is a river boat that (as far as I know) still runs up and down the Mississippi River out of Memphis. Seems almost everyone I know has taken a ride on it…I took a ride back in the early 80’s. It was pretty darn cool!
It does
I'm thinking Asia loves her wine! Hell yeah.....and BJ, you have a vast knowledge of music brother. Great reaction.
Hey guys, it's been a minute.......or two. Hope Y'all are well. Happy New Year.
Great stuff!! ❤️
Mountain were from New York (Long Island) but they do sound like straight up Blues Rock from Mississippi on this song. Riff is enormous and VERY influential to metal rhythm guys
I believe this song was played in the movie the Expendables.
Mississippi Queen was also a paddle boat on that River...I think. peace&love
ALWAYS one of my favorites!
The song is about working on the Riverboat "Mississippi Queen".
its Actually the Doobie Brothers Black Water
one of my favorite southern rocks songs. LOL
YES! My high school band used to jam this. HA! all the older bands would like WTF are these teens in the 80's doing with this song. Winning this battle of the bands sucker later old dudes. I'm an old dude now :)
