Back when this song was recorded, Leslie West was a renegade equipment-wise. Instead of Marshall amps, he used Stramp amps loaded with Telefunken tubes. That's how he got that thick, muddy sound. That set up, and the best vibrato in Rock history, is very distinctive.

The thing about 'Mississippi Queen' is that it blends a SUPER heavy, hard rock/metal/blues with THICK tone (guitar) and a GREAT blues lick/riff with taut, sparse drumming that hits all the right spots, AND Leslie West's INCREDIBLE R&B flavored vocals with simple, memorable lyrics and chorus to create a perfect, hard rockin' song.

    • @rogerf7265

Actually his guitar tone came by accident. Leslie West said in an interview that he had been playing through Marshall's and when they picked up their gear to play a gig at the Fillmore he was surprised to find that instead of his Marshall's he had instead been sent a Sunn PA head and 4 4X12 cabs. The head had 4 mic inputs which he plugged the cabs into and when turned up this was the tone that he got. He also only played single P90 pickup Les Paul Jr. guitars because he preferred their tone but the biggest surprise to me was that he actually used very light gauge strings. For the record since there was no such thing as a light gauge strings for guitars so what he did was get rid of the low E string and move all of the other strings down a slot and then he used a banjo A string in place of the standard high E. Tuned to standard pitch if not a little sharp depending on where you read it.

Funk #49 by Joe Walsh & The James Gang another great riff and killer drums with cowbell fused styles like Mississippi Queen, released about the same time, there was a lot of 3 piece bands in early 70's doing innovative stuff, one guitar, bass and drums they had to fill the sound. Thanks for this review. Your sound quality is superb. When Leslie West met Felix Pappalardi and they began working together, it changed his musical life. Felix Pappalardi, who played bass guitar in Mountain was a classically trained musician/composer/producer/multi instrumentalist and a free thinker. He produced and contributed musically to the first 2 Cream albums prior to working with Leslie West, who at the time was in a Long Island based band called The Vagrants. I know all the history, which is extensive, because I'm a huge fan of Mountain. I'm also aware of the profound influence that Felix Pappalardi had. They were the first rock band I was a real fan of and the first that I saw in concert. 1971 and I was 17. Ten dollar admission price for the ticket I'd bought in advance. Seated in the 6th row from the stage, I was blown away. After the concert I was partially deaf for a few hours, ears ringing. 2 other Mountain songs worth checking out, among many, are "Never In My Life" and "Theme for an Imaginary Western".

Corky Laing wrote this song before the formation of the band Mountain. There is an interesting story behind how he came up with it, involving a power outage during a live performance with his band "Energy". I know tons of trivia about Mountain and the individual members. What's most important to remember is that they formed during the seminal days of what became known as "hard rock" and were a major influence in not only that genre, but in a multitude of hard edged genres that spawned from it. Leslie West's guitar playing has been a major inspiration and influence to countless guitarists. Felix Pappalardi is a legend, for numerous reasons, and to be accurate he had the role of musical arranger/conductor in Mountain. If you explore Mountain more deeply you'll soon discover that he was also an innovative, melodic bassist and unique vocalist. This among many other accomplishments
