How do we get rid of 'Citizens United '? Is the Supreme Court the oligarchy if their decisions cannot be changed after proving the decision is harmful to us?
Getting rid of Citizens United will require major reform or movements where pressure has to be applied by voters. Ballot initiatives at the State level is probably the best way to start. 26 states allow public ballot initiatives.
Hi John. Do you think we make a mistake individualizing fascism when the culprits are always the same ? Hitler's enablers: - The church - The media (radio) - The rich people (banks, defense companies, etc.) Trump's enablers: - The church - The media ( TV and social) - The rich folks Maybe we need to make more emphasis on these 3 culprits
Even a very cursory reading of history would show you that in Hitler's case these three were not the main culprits: - Hitler was already convicted and had been imprisoned prior to coming to power - so this implicates the judiciary. - He managed to take an advantage of a split between Communists and social Democrats, and to outwit the right wing party. The Weimar republic's political system was easy to exploit and he did this following the Rsichstag fire. This speaks to political squabbling and infighting of the political classes, as well as ineptitude of political systems. - He rallied against what he (and many Germans) viewed as unfair treatment following the treaty of versailles, as well as bad economic conditions, and used scaprgoating of a hated minority and demagougary to win people over. This points to international elites and socioeconomic factors. The Trump-Hitler comparisons are tired, but this particularly American, neolineral, inaccurate
The Catholic Church in Germany opposed the Nazi Party, and in 1933 elections, the proportion of Catholics who voted for the Nazi Party was lower than the national average. Pope Pius XII warned the Allies about the planned Nazi invasion of the Low Countries in 1940. The Nazis gathered dissident priests that year in a dedicated barracks at Dachau, where 95 percent of its 2,720 inmates were Catholic (mostly Poles, with 411 Germans); over 1,000 priests died there. The expropriation of church properties surged after 1941. All that despite the Vatican being geographically *in* fascist Italy. Learn history or fuck off with your lies
In the UK we not only have our elections done in 6-8 weeks, there is a limit on how much each party is allowed to spend. Plus, we have a permanent, non partisan civil service so the party that wins the election starts work the very next day. There is no drawn out transition and certainly no one has ever denied the result. Imagine the good that could be done if all that money spent on US elections was instead used to improve education or healthcare, two areas in desperate need of improvement.
Exactly. It's not throwing everything at it. There are strict rules on how much you can spend. The sense of defeat in this pod is palpable. America is done.
Seems there’s a sluggish change process in Britain. I can’t believe how long the money party? have controlled the government. Even to controlling when an election happens or if it happens. The government has seemed largely unfriendly to its citizens in Britain, in the last 10-15 years. Look at Brexit. Good for the very rich but not for most small business owners.
We have this investment economy. And in my opinion it is why we are suffering. We take all the wealth and savings from our community, and dump it into random investments not even in our communities. And people aren't investing in mass about companies they care about and feel good in, the are solely investing in companies which make number go up. Since companies are only worth something if number goes up, profit based decisions are the only thing that can happen, and that harms everyone. We are suffering from our own system that we are forced to participate in.
Here's an idea - make the election cycle shorter and severely limit donation amounts; you know, like many other Western countries have done. Nah, I think you got better odds of the U.S. adopting the metric system, eliminating the penny, and eliminating the one dollar bank note altogether and fully replacing it with a coin - all at the same time.
I think there should be a $200. limit, per year, from any one source, including self funding Otherwise we end up with only Billionaire candidates. That may be the work around to Citizens United and PACs. We would definitely have to implement some kind of limit for email and text message begging for sure.
We're in a 100 year cycle - not enough citizens have been properly educated and understand history or even a brief history of economics. I'm so tired of someone foolishly making a statement of the present moment vs understanding the business cycle and how long it takes for policy to take place - I LOVE LINA KAHN! They better not get rid of her and what she's doing at the moment!
"Charity is a cold grey loveless thing. If a rich man wants to help the poor, he should pay his taxes gladly, not dole out money at a whim." Clement Attlee.
At the turn of the century where 1899 turned into 1900, we had issues with the "Robber Barrons", and the solution for that was unionization. FDR helped, but the unions went to FDR and demanded change for The People. Unions are on the rise. Keep unionizing. Elect people who are pro-union. If you are in a union, don't just complain, elect better union leaders. If they become corrupt, kick em out and elect someone who has a conscience.
People want to have time off work, not to spend more time outside work hours trying to figure out who to vote for to fix their problems. If you work 40 hours a week, you spend about 10-11 hours, 5 days a week on work stuff (commuting, lunch breaks, laundering work clothes, etc) There's 168 hours in a week and you'll spend about 56 of them sleeping. 50-55 on work stuff... that's already 100+/168 or 59% of your time spent preparing for or doing work tasks. And you expect people to commit to union meetings, debates and campaigns? Get real.
This is one of the best conversations in this series (in my opinion) -- lots of compelling analysis of the systems that are pretty much out of reach to every average person. This discussion is the kind I would love to see happening more in media but also between individuals across the parties. Thank you, Jon, Guests, and your Team!
Make it law that 50% of any donation that exceeds $50,00 made by an individual is garnished for a fund that goes to social support programs. Up it to 75% of donations to PACs that also get garnished. Funding Social Security, Disability and Veteran's Benefits would be much easier.
Or abolish the system of legal corruption entirely? I don't think you'd be able to specify in the law what it has to be spent on; what if someone comes in to power that gets rid of social security completely? At best it would all just end up in the treasury and leave it up to politicians to find ways to line their, or their cronies pockets.

Keep up the great work everyone! 🖤🤘
France limits money to be spent, limits size of paper leaflets, posters, etc. State pays unemployed people to stuff envelopes, state post service delivers leaflets from all candidates to all homes, broadcast time controlled. (New technology is not yet controlled, weird stuff everywhere.)

I think asking journalists for prescriptive solutions to problems goes against thier professional preconceptions: they are by nature passive observers, not policy-makers.
Every time a Republican pulls off safeguards to our infrastructure and financial institutions we either have a bubble or collapse... FDR put in safeguards for us to never have another great depression
Sounds to me like the "questions" raised in this discussion have been the bread a butter of socialist critique for decades if not over a century. The defining "solutions" for the problems presented by these same thinkers isn't donate to the Democrats and hope the system changes from the inside. It's a form of revolution. The sooner we all stop scratching our asses and asking "what do we do?" as if the answer hasn't been there for years and instead figure out how we do it, the sooner we can bring back some hope for our future.
Does anyone watch The Bulwark on UA-cam? With Tim Miller? I watch it and one of my biggest pet peeves with that show is how Tim, as a former Republican, decries every policy that Bernie Sanders puts forward as “evil socialism”. And Trump and Vance along with billionaires like Musk and Bezos do the same thing. So at the end of the day, who is left to fight for the People? And what precisely are they fighting for? Because it seems like Bernie and The Squad and organizations like DSA and Justice Democrats are fighting an uphill battle.
Tim Miller (who is still a conservative, as far as I can tell) has been moderating a bit, it seems. He did mention in one of the episodes with Sarah Longwell and JVL that he gets more socialist with every new rich person he has to interview. And at the very least, he chose the right candidate to throw his media machine behind in this election. I'm not sure what more you could ask from The Bulwark which has been a center right news outlet for a long time. I don't think they're ever going to support AOC or Bernie the way we do...
That's exactly why I don't listen to Miller and can't stand him. He's the typical anti-Trumpy conservative: still a conservative who doesn't care about the common good. He's well-off and not concerned with material conditions. His only shared interest with progressives is defense of gay rights. But have to give him credit for fooling lots of "liberal Democrats."
@@GrimBTemplar I also watch the Bulwark, because I like Tim and Sam Stein as human beings, and you're right about them getting more socialist. It's amazing what 10 years of nonstop campaigning from Trump can do to conservatives with some sort of conscience. I also think the Squad, even tho it lost 2 members this year, is as important as ever in Congress. In my home state of Wisconsin two women are running as Democrats for the House this year in reddish or red districts, and they are unapologetic progressives. (One of them is in the Green Bay area where the incumbent, an ex-Marine, ran away from his job because right-wing activists were too crazy for him. I'm not making this up.) So I think AOC's successful campaign in NYC has inspired people in unlikely places.
Thank you for this discussion, Jon. This is more or less a potted summary of part of a second year politics course unit I did on influences on the political system.
I'm still trying to get back on the other side of the looking glass after forcing myself to listen to Joe Rogan's 3 hour "interview" with Trump. What was even more disturbing was the Bot infested comments thread. It has to be seen to be believed. I'm waiting to see if the MSM even notices.

I’m a fan of the podcast. I have a recommendation for a potential future topic focused on disaster relief, the public misconceptions, the successes, the failures, and what is possible to improve. With recent cases of FEMA workers receiving death threats and a massive amount of false information on display through social media and even elected officials, it is important to clarify the actual role of FEMA as it relates to local government. The false information seems to be a constant distraction from any attempt to solve the real issues and make legitimate efforts to disaster relief reform.
It's a good topic, although I suspect 99.9% of the misinformation is driven by racism and won't go away until the M. Taylor Greenes of the world cease to exist. The entire nation (and world) is a climate disaster area and should be treated as such. FEMA is a model for how that could be done.
Re improving education. I commented on how trump was a danger to democracy. A MAGAt yelled at me "we are a republic, not a democracy". Does this mean some people believe a democracy means everyone is a democrat and a republic = republicans? I'd love to be proved wrong.
You should mention the very recent Supreme Court Ruling that Government Agencies can no longer set fines and penalties for breaking regulations unless there is a court conviction. They basically said any penalty can be appealed to the courts and a Judge, with absolutely no expertise or knowledge in the field, will decide if the regulation is reasonable or legal and if any "crime" has been committed. The Trump Supreme Court has said Judges with no knowledge or expertise are the experts, not the real scientists and those with years of experience as a civil servant in the government agencies. So any attempt to fine a company for violating pollution levels or financial regulations or any other regulation would take years and years of court battles to implement and likely be destined to fail. The impact will be a flood of court cases in the coming years with corporations thumbing their noses at any attempt at regulation by government agencies.
I mean. This is money that could be spent on feeding the hungry, healing the sick, and housing the homeless. But no. We just get this huge spectacle of ppl jetting around to give speeches burning jet fuel for no reason!!!
So the argument from the Billionaires perspective is that the system works this way and wouldn’t you also want to throw all your money at things you deem important. Seems logical but really just speaks to a sense of self righteousness. I agree, I would love to give as much financial support to things I care about. However, if money is speech and is going directly to political campaigns, then everyone should have the same amount of “free speech”. Even if they funding things I want, on principle they shouldn’t. Campaign donations are not philanthropy. If money is representation and ultimately controls legislation, we should all have the same playing field. Also, if you haven’t, check out the Powell memo. PS. Modern day libertarians feel like the remnants of the old Jeffersonian yeoman farmers that are still angry they never got their free labor utopia and now this is there best shot.
It's been talked about consistently since Citizens United in 2010 and nothing is done, because the policymakers are beneficiaries of the rotten system.
Everyone in America seems to think that you just need the right candidate. But policy comes from the advocates for the candidate. You need to become an indispensable key to power in order to have any influence in directing power. No one rules alone. There are certain voting blocks and individual donors you need to attain power and then other blocks or individuals you need to stay in power. If you want change you need to be one of those keys, preferably one that is needed to both attain and retain power. So we're doomed to this cycle because those who rise to power are often psychopathic and it makes sense, because who is better suited to grab power than someone who will do anything to have it?
Seeing a billionaire jump for joy in support of a delusional possible future president will only end well for them and their crooked colleageus, to see it celebrated by those who will only suffer its consequences is frightening.

The president of the US shouldn't be campaigning for his/her entire last year of a 4 year term. How are the American people benefiting from an absentee president? Plus, we all get sick of it. Maybe more people would pay attention to the candidates, and there'd be less undecided voters, if they didn't think they could tune it out for months until the end.

Well. It’s the young people’s future they are sitting out. They will (I suppose) get what they put their energy towards. They will be angry when the autocracy removes their internet. Hi John. Do you think we make a mistake individualizing fascism when the culprits are always the same ?
Hitler's enablers:
- The church
- The media (radio)
- The rich people (banks, defense companies, etc.)
Trump's enablers:
- The church
- The media ( TV and social)
- The rich folks
Maybe we need to make more emphasis on these 3 culprits
And the poorly educated. The Mango Mussolini's favorites.
Joseph Goebbels said " make certain that you accuse your enemy of the crimes YOU commit!"
Excellent historical points. Thanks for the reminder.
Even a very cursory reading of history would show you that in Hitler's case these three were not the main culprits:
- Hitler was already convicted and had been imprisoned prior to coming to power - so this implicates the judiciary.
Impeccable timing!
Our country is rotting from the inside.

And take religion out of banknotes and coins too.
The commentary with the ladies afterward is frequently more insightful than the main segment. Outstanding as always. Thank you.
We're in a 100 year cycle - not enough citizens have been properly educated and understand history or even a brief history of economics.
Buy union goods only
That and anti-trust legislation to bust up the monopolies

Publicly funded elections, where anyone who wants to run gets the same amount of money to do it, is the solution, IMO. Pipe dream, tho.
France limits money to be spent, limits size of paper leaflets, posters, etc. State pays unemployed people to stuff envelopes, state post service delivers leaflets from all candidates to all homes, broadcast time controlled. (New technology is not yet controlled, weird stuff everywhere.)

"Hitler was a vegitarian". The new trivia fact I needed! And it came not one minute into the show!
Hitler was also a failed artist. He took those hurt feelings and went into politics.

Great suggestion!
Awesome show guys, keep up the great work!
Thanks Jon, now I'm really depressed.

Hasan Minaj talked about this in the Netflix "The Patriot Act".
It's been talked about consistently since Citizens United in 2010 and nothing is done, because the policymakers are beneficiaries of the rotten system.
So the question was not answered, do we live in an oligarchy?
Everyone in America seems to think that you just need the right candidate. But policy comes from the advocates for the candidate. You need to become an indispensable key to power in order to have any influence in directing power. No one rules alone. There are certain voting blocks and individual donors you need to attain power and then other blocks or individuals you need to stay in power. If you want change you need to be one of those keys, preferably one that is needed to both attain and retain power. So we're doomed to this cycle because those who rise to power are often psychopathic and it makes sense, because who is better suited to grab power than someone who will do anything to have it?
❤ watching u Jon!

this is a depressing conversation - it’s why young people are not voting and it’s the definition of insanity - it sucks- the misogyny, the patriarchy, capitalism, greed, hatred, war, violence, climate collapse
Well. It’s the young people’s future they are sitting out. They will (I suppose) get what they put their energy towards. They will be angry when the autocracy removes their internet. But then, as the country spirals into chaos (if another trump) it really won’t make much of a difference. I can imagine a world where WE are the the Germany of old and the WW will be to shut us down before we can destroy the world.
