Here's an excellent albeit incomplete recording of Weather Report's concert at "The Bottom Line" in NYC on October the 7th in 1975 that I recently received in a trade. It may only be four tracks long but they are absolute dynamite! Great sound quality as well. This performance is one of the best I've heard from this incarnation of the band. It may be overshadowed by the "Jaco years" but this line-up was a powerhouse in its own right and worthy of more recognition/attention in my opinion.
Wayne is a lethal switchblade. His ability to cut through the electronic jungle of sounds with his musical integrity and historic perspective in tact is rivaled only by Miles and to be able to impose his unique sense of composition is truly amazing. Miles has said that the only horn player that could play this way was Bird.
Thanks for posting! This might be my favorite Weather Report lineup-Alphonso was a perfect fit for the funkier sound they had for some years. I have a soundboard recording from their August 18 show in Cleveland, Ohio, which I remember being just as good. Let me know if you're interested.
WOW! What a trade! I just love Weather Report. A milestone in music history. Alphonso shines on these pieces too, well they all do. Thanks for sharing.
Alphonso Johnson sounds like he has little edge-and yes he was the forerunner to Jaco-with his sound-the funny thing about that whole situation is that while Jaco, after joining the group, then went on to become quite famous, Johnson went on to become, comparatively speaking, unknown. And yes, you can hear in this recorded audio performance that Alphonso Johnson was a bad mutha_ucker on the bass-in fact if I didn't know that it was Johnson I would've thought it was Jaco! My question then is, why did Jaco imitate so much of that which apparently and in retrospect, was first done by Alphonso Johnson(who is also playing a fretless bass on this recording, as I believe was the case on most or all of his known recordings, back in the 1970s)? And thank you to Mr. Music Universe for posting this classic audio recording! 10-17-24.
we all love Jaco but Alphonso was a bad ass in weather report as well.
Thank you.
YESSSSS
Santanas pick. As well as Benny Riethfield whom he took from Miles Davis . Sure a good taste
Oh Yess... He's The Original.

Alphonso es muy funki on that 3rd track!
I think i was at that show.
cool
The Report became who they were well before Jaco, Alphonso brought that wonderful earth-shaken funk basslines that drove the band 🎹🎹🎹🎷🎸🥁🪇🎵🎼🌅🔥
Much more lyrical and melodic. Of course Al didn't suffer from major mental illness.
A minha cura. Obrigado mestre.
МОЩЬ! Крутой был состав!
