Yea, that album took it to another notch from Sweetnighter. From Nubian Sundance to Jungle Book (like Jaco's John and Mary playing with his children, just brings tears to your eyes) , Such a beautiful album.
weather report, mysterious traveler, frog and night gown, Raleigh underground, 1975 OMG!!!! I feel sooo lucky and honored that I saw this band and was so close......it was a mystical experience
Alphonso paved the way for Jaco to fit in to the vibe of Weather Report which was more of a progressive approach than Miroslav Vitous had envisioned. Alphonso was my favorite bassist from his work with George Duke- I liked that fuzz sound that he used occasionally.
Alphonso Johnson put out some great live grooves with Santana. Santana sounded more like jazz than rock at times when Johnson played with him in the late 1980s.
Amazing rhythm section, Alphonso Johnson and Chester Thompson. Mr. Thompson would eventually find his way to Phil Collins and Genesis. Wonderful to hear a live version of Mysterious Traveller!
Everybody keeps on raving about Jaco and Erskine, but these guys had a completely different groove down. The early Erskine was simply out-classed by Pastorius (with a few exceptions) but Chester and Al were on that same high level. And look at the size of Chester's cymbals and hi-hat. Some noise.....
Unreal-eakin' Joe. I am just blown by this music...AGAIN. in 2014, tonight. Heard this version of WP band in '75 (?), similar versions of Mysterious Traveller et all, of at Michigan Theater, Detroit. Just bleeewwww me out, then, and again, now. But you know, now, I see up close in this video, this spirit of this band and how it seemed to rEALLy catch the power of all players together in this special film. Stunning performance in Berlin. What a different vibe than Amerika...I read an earlier comment on the various Jaco WP versions, et all. I agree to a point. But they all had their own character...Joe Z...Just is so INCREDIBLE isn't he? I mean he was a genius and and told stories with every note...whew, that is an art! - - I think this and the live Sweetwater period were golden, personally, as that was my first exposure, after their first self-titled LP. & then Body Electric just threw me into space jazz, even more following SunRa's electronic space mystic approach, which I also just latched onto...seeing them for the first time in New Mexico in '81 as part of the NM Jazz Workshop... This WP band, however, with the melodic beauty of the Shorter, Alphonso, and Acuna......wow. It caught me right now, again, even stronger....Thank you Josef Erich Zawinul July 7, 1932-Sept. 11, 2007. Enriched by this band's music...what a gift to have heard this in my life.
The kid, Alphonso Johnson, was very influential when he hit the scene. One of my favourite WR albums once they became more composition oriented is Tale Spinnin’, with he and Ndugu Chancler on drums. Following this album they would do Black Market, and Jaco would join. Zawinul showing off some wicked piano chops here.
matter of fact fantàstic show... still listen to these guys i started in 74 first song ive ever heard was nubian sundance..... i have been hooked since i just finished a newer show wr live in japan domino therory it doesnt matter the lineup wr is the best band ive ever seen....... n ive seenm all miles dizzy herbie mahavishnu cobhams bands n on n on jack u yung cats better get hip someday my kids r .. shit im 62 sittin out on front porch watchin a meteor shower in new brighton pa.
Jaco Pastorius was only on "Cannon Ball" and "Barbary Coast" Alphonso Johnson appeared on 5 of them including "Herandnu" Alphonso had written before he left after "Black Market" was released.
When I bought "Black Market" on cd I thought Jaco was on every song. It wasn't until I read the Wikipedia page for it that I realized that Alphonso played on at least half of the album.
I thought that way in the 90's myself, and realized that Alphonso was playing fretless too, he did a great job on Elegant People. Jaco brought more out on his fretless, the sound innovator.
My Jr. highschool band director was one of the acoustic bop mainstays of Charlotte NC in the 70s still is last time I looked but he sometimes had young 20 something jazz musicians hanging out around our band room to help. Anyway a bunch of us caught a ride to state contest with one of these jazz hippies and Tail Spinning was on his cassette player!😎 shit man o man mysterious Zen fusion not like Stanley Clark or Mahavishnu WTF. 🤔🙄☯️
..definitely the best I’ve seen with Alphonso Johnson, killing it here fo real..he and Chester Thompson seem to be on a nice tight level here..excellent..thanks..New York September 6, 2020..
funkiest version of WR to these ears!! wish they would of done more. Jaco's coo esp as a soloist but I personally feel the groove more here, a little less stiff
Amazing band at this period. Far in advance of anything around really, in the jazz world at least. I think they've just re-released the album (with extra material) re-mastered in a box set with the other 5 early albums. I'll be heading down to my local shop to find this. Thanks for uploading.
Saw these guys. Wow end of concert a Joe looks at Chester to see if he has one more song in him. Chester shakes his head no, and that was it show over. Never saw a drummer put so much into a performance.
...sweet Jesus! Why would the footage be cut so harshly? (edit: i see the parts you've uploaded now -- got lost in the reverie of the music. Much obliged.) Much thanks for the uplaod of genius Joe and his troops. Any chance you could upload the rest of Zawinul's solo piano that ends this vid? It is rare to see Joe at the acoustic piano -- such a treat. Historic footage, really - as in: culturally important. Beautiful setting...kudos to Berlin.
No offense, as I like both players, but honestly the people who watch this vid and suggest Alphonse was the better bass player...whatever y'all smokin', I want none of it. Listen to Badia here w/ Alphonse vs. a live version with Jaco, and really, very clearly the more creative and technically proficient player was Jaco. I agree Alphonse paved the way for him and his contribution to WR on Tale Spinnin' and Mysterious Traveler was very tasty stuff...but...
Saw them at the Cleveland Agora , that same year saw gentle giant , it was funny I ran into friends that I hadn't seen in years that night,,, to be honest , I don't think this is that good , this band moved jazz forward , that eventually led us to Kenny gee,, I think today's jazz ,is taking us back to the unbelievable years of the 50s and 60s,, I love my weather report LPS, but it suddenly became about how many instruments and LP instruments you could afford to make jazz..
Great grovy Bass work from Johnson- big mistake to change him as bass player from this group. WR was not finish with developing this group and its members , before replace all the players
Tfunkize i think w.r. could have gone longer and grown with Johnson , who was magnificent , .I have no idea why they switched up .I just saw 1994 clip of just zowbeedoo and the amazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing Indian drummer Trilok Gurtu ...just the two of them .I have been scouring youtube for years ,finding as many videos of the Zowbeedoo as I can ,I am never disappointed .He played with so many versions of w.r. and the syndiate .I can't say every single one was the penn ultimate ,but note for note ,for me ,zwinul had had as many very high musical moments as any musician who has played , imho .I think that is due in part to him changing the lineup .The Zowbeedoo is somewhat of an idol of mine , who inspired me to get with the best musicians I could .I got lucky a few times .The body of work Zawinul left behind for us is just an amazing gift .I still come across videos that are new to me and me jaw drops and my toenails shoot right out of my boots . peace Tfunkzie may the funk live on . As our last drummer said and played on the original song :"God made me funky ." happy head hunting my friend
Jazz as a spiritual instrument? Absolutely. This group actually changed the consciousness of the entire planet. Many a low vibratory entity was eliminated through this higher consciousness evoking band. That's the purpose of jazz in its entirety.
they have certainly lifted me out of dark places many many times! I love jazz for this reason. Jazz is my approach to life! Improvisation and unbridled expression of the inner self…what could be more spiritual? I am so thankful for this music and all it’s brought to my life.
WOW! I remember this music when I was in high school. At 15 I thought of this music as a puzzle that I had to decipher. Alphonso Johnson was my hero before long Jaco showed up.
That's how I felt about the first album by Chick Corea Elektric Band. It was like a puzzle to me at age fifteen, listening to the way all the parts intertwined. I bought that album because I was reading a lot of Modern Drummer magazine and I kept seeing all these ads with Dave Weckl in them, so I had to see what all the fuss was about. I've been a huge fan ever since.
It's amazing to think of the amount of music memorisation Chester has done in his career. What with Weather Report, Zappa, Genesis and Phil Collins solo he memorised alot of notes, grooves, figures, arrangements and cues.
If anyone sees this comment and can help me out with understanding how Alphonso Johnson got such an amazing bass tone here, I would like to achieve something on this level.

Much as I like Jaco, there is not enough pre-Jaco WR on UA-cam, so this is brilliant.
My favorite weather report
It's all good.
Alphonso is a unheralded Master !!!
It's tough to compete with Jaco or even Victor Bailey.
No, Jaco was.....
True
@@dorotaduszynska368 Jaco stole all his stuff and admitted it

The Mysterious Traveller album changed the way I experienced the world!
Mahn England Yes! same for me only it was I Sing the Body Electric. This album plus Sweetnighter and Mysterious Traveller are the Holy Trinity for me.
Yes, mo too. It is the greatest album of all time in any genre. I never get tired of it.
Yea, that album took it to another notch from Sweetnighter. From Nubian Sundance to Jungle Book (like Jaco's John and Mary playing with his children, just brings tears to your eyes) , Such a beautiful album.
brilliant joe zawinul and the lineup!
weather report, mysterious traveler, frog and night gown, Raleigh underground, 1975 OMG!!!! I feel sooo lucky and honored that I saw this band and was so close......it was a mystical experience
Miss Weather Report forever!!!!!!
listening to weather report is always BRIGHT AND SUNNY !!!!!!!!
Alphonso paved the way for Jaco to fit in to the vibe of Weather Report which was more of a progressive approach than Miroslav Vitous had envisioned. Alphonso was my favorite bassist from his work with George Duke- I liked that fuzz sound that he used occasionally.

I agree. George, Alphonso and Ndugu . 👏
Joe Zawinul is a funky ass white dude..that's miles loved him "IN A SILENT WAY" all damn day
thank you for the perfect music of W eather R eport
thank yOu for Chester Thompson ! great drummer !!!
Saw them for the first time 1975. My God how good they were! And later I saw next ” generations” of WR. All to ” the bitter end”😀Always my favourites!
Chordal hits played by Wayne are killin' ! :) They are SO integral to the tune. Never heard them before or used by anyone else since.
Nice to hear Wayne Shorter play!
Amazing rhythm section, Alphonso Johnson and Chester Thompson. Mr. Thompson would eventually find his way to Phil Collins and Genesis. Wonderful to hear a live version of Mysterious Traveller!
He also spent some time with Frank Zappa 😊
Wayne Shorter is just amazing, he just goes off! ...love Chester Thompson and Alfonso Johnson, great rhythm section...thanks so much for posting!
Acuña best peruvian drummer percussionist! Most versatile
All those guys Dom Um Ramão, Alex Acuña
four years before Acuna switched to drums and helped build this absolute masterpiece: Heavy Weather
I saw them on the Heavy Weather tour in 77 and Acuna was already on drums.
Less than a year later Acuña was on drums and Badrena was on percussion.
4 years after this they we’d already recorded Mr. Gone and were doing the 8:30 tour with Peter Erskine. Acuna wasn’t even in the band anymore.
This is funking fantastic!

Jaco Pastorius was only on "Cannon Ball" and "Barbary Coast" Alphonso Johnson appeared on 5 of them including "Herandnu" Alphonso had written before he left after "Black Market" was released.
Errol Ingram Herandnu might be Alphonso's best song, next to Up From The Cellar on his Moonshadows solo album.
Wayne Shorter-tenor sax AND piano.
Joe is alos great classical player ,that showed at the end.
I actually did my own psychotherapy with mushrooms and WR. GOOD COMPANY, GREAT VIBES, GOD THE ALMIGHTY AS PROCTOR.
Alphonso Johnson was done dirty.
Beautiful ❤️
That’s Groovy. Look at those sideburns. Nice. The Band trying to keep up with Chester! Man was he good. CJ
in 1975 Weater Report was the number 1 groupe at least here in EU, evryone was inspiried by thire " mystirious traveller " music

They didn't play the slow groove from Mysterious traveller....damn
Yes, agreed. It's a cool live version, but it DOES lose something as far as mysterioso-vibe compared to the original...
Is that Chester Thompson on skinz?
Yes

Alphonso Johnson is actually my preferred Bassist in Weather Report.
I can dig it
I like him a lot too but for his post-WR work
