Brilliant train layout New Junction
Love the Northern Ireland Railways coaches 👍🏼
Loving the progress Richard, well done on the nomination & good luck at GETs
Still behind the scenes watching. Some great tips there! 🫣
Coming along very nicely 👏
Good progress on the layout
Timing of this is perfect for me, been a few years since last built up scenery on a layout. I was always taught to cut the plaster into triangles as it follows contours much better.
A little tip that I use, is to apply the paint almost as soon as you lay the sculptamold - don't wait for it to dry before painting. The paint mixes in with the sculptamold and this means that, later, when the scenery gets a little chip in it (and exhibition layouts are virtually guaranteed to get chips in the scenery) you don't see the white under the paint.
good video , enjoyed
Looks awesome ☺️ can’t what to see where this all leads !
Me neither 😂
I am looking forward to getting to this stage as I have never done any before and I always like watching you making a mess. Tip: I would of covered the rails with some card. Martin. (Thailand)
Cool little video Richard, I like the fact you don't try to rush it and enjoy the whole process. Grooving on the jazz soundtrack. Nice!
Awesome Richard!!! Well done! Keep up the good work! Cheers Onno.
Very inspirational Richard, thank you.
Great Stuff Richard , You've always loved messy modelling mate, Regards David
Great to see another video. The scenery is coming together now and congrats on the Favourite UA-camr nomination. You have my vote. All the best. 😊 - Nicholas.
Its amazing how much difference that one coat of paint made! Really coming along now.
Looks good
It’s all starting to come together now. Always great to see the progress on New Junction mk2. All the best Richard.
Yes, it is starting to come together with the scenery. The layout will bring to take life. It all takes time. (Mike HO from Australia.) Best of luck with the Hornby Awards for 2023.
Brilliant video! Its so good to see your layout progress, its really coming along now!
It's one of my favourite parts of layout building - those initial applications of colour! I feel just that first step already changes everything.
Thanks for the update. Enjoying following your progress so much that I'm currently catching up on your entire back catalogue! Only 3.5 yrs to go! (Have voted)
Hello Richard great work your layout is looking good.👍
👍👍Very nice update! Scenery is coming along quite well. .🚂🚂
The 1st base layers make such a huge difference, great video.
I always cover my track with masking tape - the blue "painter's" tape - to keep the sculptamold from accidentally landing on the tracks. A little sculptamold on your switch points can ruin your day!
Finally. Nice to see progress on the project. I'm waiting for the next update. ;)
Nice to see an update on the layout looking great now
i wish i had the time, space and money to take on a project like this. Loving the updates when they come! keep up the great work!
Hi Richard, the ground cover definitely gives the layout that lift to the next level, it's all looking very impressive. Another great video keeping us updated with the progress.
Looking great Richard.. Surprised you find the time 😂... I will come & say Hello if you are going to GETS..
Oh yes, I'll be there, be great to catch up! 😊
Always the most exciting part of a build. Glad to see you were putting in your time at Making Tracks 3. I trust it was fun.
Hi, great video, it was very informative, I can’t wait to build my layout, all the hints and tip are very much appreciated, great music by the way, thanks for sharing.
Wow, the layout really has transformed into a wonderful sceneic landscape Richard, well done so far.
Absolutely great job a brilliant layout coming to life with all your hard work
Good progress on the scenery front. Scenery always brings a layout to life. Enjoyable update Richard. Cheers Euan
Hi Richard didn't know you were back glad to see it will keep watching, I'm sorry though Charlie will be getting my vote.
Well deserved too
good layout looks good nice work on the layout lots going on thanks lee
Love your videos, amazing layout. Was fun meeting you at the SVR Steam gala. Ending up staying over night, missed my national rail train home.
The pleasure was all mine! 😊
Great update, it’s really starting to come to life. Amazing what a difference a small bit of scenic makes. I did start to have palpitations though when you mentioned polystyrene 😂😂 great work 👌👏
The layout is really coming along now Richard and is looking great, keep up the great work.
Nice little update there Richard. The scenery is really coming along. Slow and steady wins the race as they say.
🇺🇦
Hi Richard.
Great vlog buddy.
Love plaster bandage, if it gets damaged just put another bit over it. Great getting messy.
You always explain things well.
Tunnels with the hills and embankments look really good.
I enjoy doing the scenics. Be brilliant to see it finished.
Well done buddy.
Say hi to Lulu.
DELPH JUNCTION
Thanks 👍
Brilliant update great to see it all coming together amazing what plaster paint and texture does to a layout I always look forward to seeing the next update and hopefully get see it in the future on the model railway show circuit - Mark
Superb mate I hope you get a result with the voting Richard ,I’ve been busy doing a group build on Gary’s stuff channel all the best mate
Mark 😊😊
I watched your video and I have a tip to share, after plaster bandage is put in place, take pre-mixed plasterboard filler, spread some over bandages and with a wet 2" or 3" paintbrush paint the filler all over bandages. Way cheaper than fiberwool and so much quicker, you can do it as soon as bandage material is almost dry. Gives great hard finish. If you put on dollops of this you can make rock faces as you are covering the bandages at same time.
Thank you for the prompt response and explanation. This is a common issue on a number of channels i watch. Being an expat living in San Diego I follow a number of British channels particularly from old stamping grounds and hobbies i used to be involved in. If you get to SD the model rail exhibition in Balboa park is quite impressive.
Two things I do different are: 1. I usually put a re-railer at each end of any covered track just out of sight to help make sure that the train will get through the covered area in one piece. and 2. I will ballast the openings of the tunnels from about 6 inches outside to just beyond eye sight inside the covered track. I find this very much easier than doing it after and trying to get a good ballast inside the cover.
Nice little update there pet, Kat :-)
Great video as always Richard. Very informative and like the addition of the soil on top of your base brown layer, gives some nice depth. Keep up the good work and see you at GETS?
James
You will indeed! 😊
Great update, really taking shape.
Trying to think of an extremely fine (finer than the now infamous Chinchilla Dust) to mix with brown grout to give a base ground covering.
Here in Sussex we are on clay so garden soil not a viable option.
Looks excellent. I'm actually building a TT:120 layout atm, 2 4'x3' non-scenic boards at either end with a kind of 2-track return loop, and 2 4'x1' scenic boards in the middle forming a 4-track ECML scene loosely based between Northallerton and York (so the trackwork can be dead straight, with the 2 inside lines being the fast and the 2 outside being the slow, and platforms only on the outside of the slow lines. The layout is designed to be dismantled, and I'm currently working on wiring board 1 while waiting for track for board 4 to arrive. Boards 1 and 4 are designed to be able to join together to form an 8'x3' layout without scenery, so they'll be done before I start with boards 2 and 3.
That looks fantastic Richard, although in that colour a Warchief or two might look more the part🤔😀😀✌️👍
Very nice to see an update.
Couldn't you hear me yelling "Cover your track with some cling film" before you did the plaster and sculptamold? 😁
a small paint roller tray is good for doing plaster cloth
8:39 Mmm. HP, mayo and English mustard!
For a fine joint between the joints try grease proof baking paper instead of plasticard
Lol, did yourself and Chadwick Model Railway decide to release similar videos in the same week? Plaster bandage and Sculptamold... both fantastic
Thanks for the update, great to see progress. The white carriages with blue strip, what are they? Eagerly await your next update
Do people in the UK use “ground goop” or something similar at all? I feel like it would save your 2-3 steps here.
You can look up the ratios of everything, but it involves flat latex paint, vermiculite, pva glue, celluclay, and some concentrated disinfectant like Lysol. I think that’s everything. I think it’s associated with the name Lou Sassi.
It can actually be built up to smooth out gaps too. It’s a little different than draping plaster cloth over an area.
Thanks for the update! I really like your updates. I got back to old videos every so often too because I really like your old intro music, as does my 4-year-old son.
Great stuff Richard! Looks great! Always interesting to see different methods for creating landscapes 😎
Are going to be able to reuse those tunnel portals? 🤔🤔👍
i would have use some decorators/masking tape over the tracks to help keep the track bed clean when putting on the plaster + scculpamold and the colouring afterwards --- it's looking good keep it going
Thanks for the tips!
Soon you'll have to move the 68 & Mk5s to the heritage line! 😄
Great work Richard, love your commitment to building up layer by layer. Any news on the garden layout?
None actually, it's not had anything done to it.. just plods on. 😂
15:00 looks like the only place you will be able to see the MK5 coaches after Nov/Dec will be on the model layouts - unless they can sort out the cracking or the corrosion (on the Mk5 sleepers) they are being earmarked for the scrap heap already (four coaches have already been listed for scrapping due to cracking)
Fortunately, none of TPE’s Mk5 coaches have been earmarked for scrap and their fleet is only to be mothballed in December before being moved onto a different operator in May.
The cracking issue has a fix, and it isn’t the primary reason for their withdrawal; trying to get the fix implemented is affected by the backlog of training which Covid and the current IR problems have presented, so TPE have been forced to “cut and run” so that a reliable December timetable can be created.
Fantastic vid, really cool to see how it's coming on and it's.much better than mine! 😂 Would polyfilla work instead of sculptamold?
Hi Richard. I’ve watched your channel for some time. I’m not a model train guy but enjoy watching. I made a display cabinet for a family member that looks very like the one in your wall. How much do you pay for them? I bet you could have got me plenty of orders. I have long term illness so can’t do it any more. Keep up the good work. Graham.
Hi Richard like watching your videos really helpful i d o not get the links in your videos could you do a list of what you use and were from please for the scenery
Thanks Richard
Are the old tunnel mouths for sale? They are exactly what I’m looking for for my layout
I’ve never used Sculptamold but was wondering how it’d react to mixing in the paint to it then sprinkle the dirt onto it before it sets? Just thinking of time saving as you’d be doing 3 stages in one.
You could colour the plaster although it may lighten the tone.

Another great video, Can I ask what size your layout measures? I’m just having my base boards built by a local carpenter, Painful as used to be a chippy but my spine is trashed after a bad motorcycle crash,Anyway my boards will give me 18ft x18ft x18ft x18ft and 3ft deep just wondered how it would compare in size to yours, Really loving it looking forward to next update.Andy
Hi Richard. The layout is looking great mate. I’ve used soil for ground cover too. Where did you get the shaker?. As that looks a brilliant tool. 👍
It's a woodland scenics accent shaker
@@NewJunction thanks Richard. I’ll get one 👍
What are the white MK2s with the blue line in the middle halledby the steam loco?
They're Irish Mk2s
I like it. I am interested in that Steam Train..... I don't recognise the engine or the coach design. Please help.
Hi Richard, what have you made your platforms with please? Do you have a video where you've made these?
Hi, they're laser cut by PJM models, they have a website
Can i ask why you put tile grout into the soil, also what color tile grout? Thank you
I used white tile grout as It lightens the soil colour.
I’ve been meaning to ask this for ages…
Where did you get your display cabinets from?
Picture pride
Yeah how strange 😂
Peco code 75 Concrete points would have looked better!!
They don't do express points in code 75
Great video. Slightly surprised though you did not protect the track? Cheers
Everything washes off 😊
You didn’t cover up your lines? But enjoy this video.
Why is your image in reverse in a lot of the video.
Filmed on the front facing camera on my phone lol
I don't want to upset you but . The tunnel and the bridge near the tunnel it don't look right . As it looks like the lower track goes under the bridge and under the tunnel where the main line is . However I'd also want to point out it's not my model railway.
Interesting bit of reversed filming.
How do so many UA-camrs manage to reverse their videos???
@@Tonyd5996I’m guessing it’s selfie mode on a phone.
Fecal express 😆😆😆😆🤣🤣
first?
