With that technique, I like to water it down quite a bit. That way it flows into the cracks. Then when you wipe it up, try to use something that isn’t very absorbent, but will take it off the raised brick surfaces. Obviously since it’s watered down, you’ll need to keep it more level or be careful with where it runs. That’s not to say that I prefer that look to your style. I love the way yours turned out.
I've still got my model railways in the loft from a child, hopefully when we move in 3 years time will buy a play where I can set mine up, this layout is looking awesome now. Many thanks for sharing

Nice one Richard. Nice to see the tunnel portal looking a bit more complete now. I will say painting the sides of the rails does make a massive difference. Good to see some ballasting happening as well. - Nicholas.
Hi Richard, I've used chinchilla sand on my N Gauge layout and have to say it looks really good - the only slight problem is once dry it can crack and clumps of it move a little bit. Can be remedied by adding a bit more PVA/water to the affected area. Gives the granularity needed for N Gauge too which isn't always available with some manufacturer's offerings. Chris
Hi Richard. The Chinchilla Sand looks to be an interesting alternative to more conventional ballast. I'm not much of an artist, so I would probably struggle with getting the colour right. Not a fan of the weathering on the left-hand tunnel portal - a little to heavy for my liking; to each his own, I suppose!
Richard, I'm liking the look of the chinchilla sand ballast. Great call to go with it. When doing brick or stone mortar I make a thin wash of the mortar color in acrylic paint with a drop of washing up detergent to paint over an enamel surface. Alternatively, on an acrylic surface I use a very thin enamel wash thinned with mineral spirits.
If only I knew about chinchilla sand before I did the 6kg of woodland scenics ballast on are layout. 😂 I think I'll have to grab some of them fences from whww as there just right for a bit of fencing needed here at edenbridge Junction. 😊
Looking fantastic! Everything is coming along very nicely 😁 The ballast with the Chinchilla sand looks brilliant! Looking the part! Love when you experiment with different products to get a natural real look! 😁👍🏼
Great video as always. Love the idea of the chinchilla bathing sand. Pets at Home have it for £5.00 for a 1Kg bag, this would save postage from Amazon.
There's something very Hadley Wood-esque about the tunnel portals there. The difference between them when they built the second bore for the additional tracks when the line was quadrupled shows the different techniques used. I did read somewhere that they used the tunnels almost like a test bed for the construction of the Victoria Line. I'm not sure how true that is though as I could be mistaken.
Chinchilla sand looks really good and cheap 👍 layout is looking good glad you’re 37s are running well sent two of my four back in November haven’t herd anything about them yet pretty poor cheers Al
Some fantastic progress on the layout, the chinchilla sand works great, much less of a manufactured look to it. For weathering brick to get that cement effect i've also found Flory Models washes a great alternative, they are clay based so its a case of splash on and then once dry use a damp cloth to remove to the level your happy with, much more forgiving than acrylic paint, they also do a fantastic grime effect. You just need to seal it afterwards with a nice spray of matt varnish throuhg the airbrush to prevent any additional removal.
Cincilla sand, a modeller's bonus value ballast. Can work well by itself or with a mix of fine sand or ballast. White mortar on blue engineering bricks...that's a first one for me!

Hello, I just have to ask this question I do hope you’ve taken a moment to appreciate some of my videos, and while the production values are not half as high as yours I hope there might be something you take away from what I get up to the question is, do you do this pretty much full-time I personally work several jobs, so I’m limited to about one actually less than one hour per week in my little Model Railway room it’s hard to try and get anything done but I’ve gotta accept. Well, well. After 'someone else's' video, I might have expected the 37s to de-rail everywhere and stop picking up, possibly take a header off the layout in an enormous, tragic fireball. But, no. They run perfectly and look excellent. How odd. Dear, dear. How we live in an age of curious disinformation. Lovely locos and Accurascale continue to raise the bar on diesel locos in particular. Keep that up. I for one, approve. Hurry up with the 31s though. Grief. Patience required. One moan and I apologise, but I have to, largely because it's right; brick mortar. Everyone models brick mortar as if it's bright white and the predominant colour. It isn't. Bright white mortar sand and cement costs a fortune. Mortar is grey. Usually a properly dull grey. It's never the dominant colour, because it's a tiny fraction of the area. But everyone insists on exaggerating it like so massively. Oh well.
There will always be dud models out there in the mix, I'm just glad Accurascale have a proactive dedicated team to look after us when thing go wrong. I've got six 37s now, non have skipped a beat. ❤ The brickwork is no where near finnished yet 😊
Oh dear... Those poor chinchillas are going to find the prices of their sand ramp up to the standard modelling materials now... 😂 How did you manage to stumble on that!?

Just search chinchilla sand in amazon
The brickwork is no where near finnished yet 😊

Oh dear... Those poor chinchillas are going to find the prices of their sand ramp up to the standard modelling materials now... 😂 How did you manage to stumble on that!?
Oh and the price for a 1kg bag is £3 now... Wonder if they saw your review already 😂🎉
