I feel like you should get a couple of chickens on your second plot. They can help eat the weeds, give you eggs and make you compost 😃
The Fox will get to them though.
i was going to say that a nice thought but theres a lot of foxes the chickens wont make it
Is it worth it with the costs for a coop, vaccines, vet visits and food? How many chickens do you need for it to be viable?
You don’t have to worry about predators if you build the coop properly. When chickens get old enough to start laying eggs, you will generally get one egg from each hen, every day. So, if you have 6 hens, you’ll probably get 2 and 1/2 dozen each week.
@@Shxzic if you buy the chickens already vaccinated then that isn’t a worry. They normally say a chicken per family member in the house will give you enough eggs. It was just an idea, it might not be something she’s interested in but now she has the space I thought I’d offer the option to see if it’s something she’s thought of

Don’t forget to add “browns” to your compost heap with all those greens. We save all the cardboard from the Amazon boxes and tear up and throw it in. It encourages worms to come to break it down too as well as adding equal amounts of nutrients to the soil
Thank you for reminding me to add brown to my compost I will do that next time I m round the allotment

Look at planting a ‘guild’ around the apple tree,and utilise the stumps
It's been extremely windy here today (Whitby) I nipped out into the back garden to pot up 3 hydrangea and 3 ornamental grasses - coat hat and gloves on but had flip flops on my feet 🙄 everything was flying everywhere but got it done 💪👍🌿🌱

Have read a few times that blackcurrant bushes grow well in areas with less sun. I've just planted two on my plot (although mine will be in full sun as no where on my plot is shaded really. One thing you have to remember about fruit bushes though is that the birds will eat the berries so they need to be covered up with netting once berries start to form.

Go to as many coffee shops and restaurants and ask for the coffee and tea grounds, most places will give them to you for free add them to your compost and by spring it will be ready to use ,☕☕😊🌻
We take the leaves off to eat like spring greens. Chopping them off apparently makes bigger sprouts, but I've never noticed much difference. Eat the leaves. Delicious !
Emma what about growing potatoes? There's nothing wrong with them sprouts, they look great!

Hi Emma I’m Terry off Leyes Road Allotment with your Brussels you have to take the Brussel Top for the table and trim all leaves back to allow light in loosing the top forces the growth to big fat Brussels . Your Doing fantastic great channel we love it .
Hey Emma your sprouts look amazing BUT you must support them otherwise the wind will blow them over and uproot them. They won’t like their roots rocking in the ground.

On the tree stump if there are a lot of crevices fill and plant creeping plants or violas something that will cover it .

The Emma B Stick Saver - allotmenteering at its best! Sprout-training ...come on teach your friends. Emma - use secateurs! However You really need to get that compost bin going - in a years time it will be beautiful soil with a bit of work.❤ a lot of work really😂
Delicious recipe for using up your Brussel Sprouts!
Brussel Sprout & Bacon soup -
6-8 rashers bacon; 2 onions; 2 potatoes; 1 liter chicken stock; nutmeg, salt & pepper to taste; 250g brussels sprouts.
In soup pan fry bacon - remove bacon and add diced onions & diced potatoes - cook 5-10 minutes. Cut fat off bacon and into pieces. Add stock to pan & simmer for 20 minutes. Season with nutmeg, salt & pepper. Bring to boil and add shredded sprouts. Simmer 6-8 minutes. Liquidize soup. Serve with bacon crumbles onto.

Hi Emma I've been watching you videos for a couple of months now and I just wanted to say that I love your style of gardening. We all start off not knowing anything and you do better, I think, and have more fun, when you just get on with it, and the jobs do come! Great way of explaining it! Otherwise I think you can over complicate everything and you basically just don't get anything done! Plants are pretty forgiving and the act of getting stuck in is so liberating. Maybe it is a personality thing but I love your energy and realistic approach. I thought I was the only one out there, 😂 who just got on with it and got muddy and took a real approach. Hi, Emma! Such a blustery day! I was thinking your stick holder would also be a great place to put the blue hoops from the garden beds when they are not in use, plus you could plant a clematis along side. It would look very pretty over your shed and bees and birds love it too! It would also disguise the stick holder. Your broccoli looks lovely!

My grandad had a smallish plot when i was little and all he had were fruit bushes…kept us all in blackcurrants, raspberries, gooseberries etc…loved going up with my dad to pick berries!

Lovely sprouts! Give them some support as if the wind rocks them too much then they'll blow.
Hi! You need to use clippers to get rid of the stems. Thats how you should take the leaves off rather than ripping as you risk damaging the main part of the plant.
You don't have to remove the leaves. People often do it for ease of harvesting and appearances. Some people believe if you top the plant the energy will go into the sprouts but theres no science behind it. Plenty grow fine without.

It you cut the top off it allows the energy to go to the bottom Brussel sprouts and allows them to get bigger.😊
Love your attitude and love your videos! RE: sprouts... I don't grow them but I've read that removing the lower leaves can speed up harvest though it's not actually necessary. Nevertheless, I would have done it at least to remove the yellow/dying ones! As for leaving in the root systems, yes, the soil microbes will digest the roots quickly thereby improving the soil. BUT the stem section you left won't rot down very quickly so cut it down as close to soil level as possible, it's just the fine root system you want to leave behind. I second someone else's recommendation, you should invest in a pair of secateurs. I use cheap ones and they do the job just fine. 🙂

Hi Emma,those sprouts look better than mine when I have tried previously.Get yourself some secateurs for pruning,you have much more control than snapping by hand and cleaner cuts :) love the allotments by the way-absolutely do leave the leaves to breakdown,thats what I do on my plots

Love the stick storage area! If you clear the ground between the stump, apple tree etc it will be come clearer what to do with it. Great work Emma.

By taking off the lower leaves and nibbled Leaves the plant puts all its energy into developing the sprout.
Hello Emma, You are doing some really great work there. I think the Stick Holder is a brilliant idea! You did not mention the game you and the children can play like PICK UP STIX fantastic game. You just said fantastic and then I typed fantastic since it fit I left it in! The kids can paint all the stix in the spring for fun colors. Cya next tyme

You need to take those sprouts Emma they're ready ..Just leave any that look a bit smaller .Get those canes in for support ,they hate rocking in the wind and there looking awesome .
If you got an arrow head drill bit and drilled a hole in the ends of each piece of wood that make up your 'raised beds'then cut a wooden broom stick or smooth branch into short pieces and pushed the pieces through the holes linking the corners together.
if you drilled smaller holes in the poles or branches then you could cut dowels from them to push through the two joined twigs or poles to secure them in place .it will stop them coming apart but when you want them to come apart just pull out the dowels to dismantle the structure .
Hi Emma I do think I'm being thick, but I still can't see the Jumpers link. No sign of Rocky this time in the video, he's probably curled up in the warm. I have to say well done, so much work there and the weather is not helpful, but it's all coming together so well 💚

I eat the outer green leaves from cauliflower and hearted cabbage and tops of sprouts. They are just as tasty as spring greens.
Hi Emma, I would also leave the leaves in the paths and just add more wood chips next spring.
Only thing I know about Brussels is you take the top out so it encourages growth to the top smaller ones. Puts the energy into those instead of new growth
Ground cherries in that big bed emma!!!! Can handle some shade. Beautiful fruit. Im growing some too so im biased, but mine are indoors.

You might want to get a small pair of clippers to get a neat cut on stems, less likely to get diseases.

I did chuckle when you mentioned being impaled by a polytunnel as my 4x3m fell victim to storm dec and flew two plots over 😭😭
This is my third year trying for sprouts At least this year I got some plants but they’re are about 5 inches tall Better luck next year
What about rhubarb or blackberries in the big shaded bed? They like shade 😃

It's best to leave your leaves Emma the worms pull them down
I think taking the leaves off of the sprouts is just removing the dying leaves which don’t benefit the plant any more.

Why don't you put fruit bushes like black, red and white currants along the plot border in order to get some privacy instead of placing them in the middle of the plot.
That tree stump has to go Emma. Pile all your unwanted rotten branches etc around it and light her up . Free potash and no stump next morning.
Wish my miserable sprouts were half as good as yours.
I make kefir,I learned that the whey is good for plants.
