I was so jealous of my older brother when he got one of these for Christmas back in the early 80's. He very rarely would ever let me play with it either. He ended up selling it to our older brother years later and I was pretty sure he had then sold it online. But then last Christmas I received a giant present from my brother and to my surprise inside was the Imperial shuttle. It was all taken apart but it was all there and still in very good shape. I think he maybe took it apart to fix the wings at one point and didn't wanna bother putting it back together so he gave it to me. It now resides in a place of respect in my house. Easily one of the best toys of the 80's.
i wish i hadn't outgrown these toys by the time ROTJ rolled around, i would have loved to have this despite me not into the larger toys like the falcon and at-at. nice to hear you finally got your ship. funny what these brittle hunks of rickety plastic means to us.
BadDriversOf Tennessee i was going to piece together my dads slave 1 he gave me YEARS ago but the side door was like $30 and the window was $20 unfortunately i found no 3D prints when i was looking
The Imperial Shuttle is by far one of my most favourite Ships alongside Slave 1, Kenner did such an amazing job on this one as it even still holds up today, I wish they re-released this so younger generations will be able to play with this absolutely stunning piece of artwork like we all once did from the Early 80s- Early 2000s
Oh my god, thank you for making this video. I haven't even watched it yet but I have been needing help straightening out my shuttle for a very long time.
Hi Dave - thanks for the videos, much enjoyed. For paint and varnish removal (like your Bespin guard) brake fluid is very harsh, and can weaken old plastics. For restoring old Tamiya Sand Scorcher RC car body shells (hard plastic) I have found 'Graffiti Go' from Toolstation to be excellent at removing old paints of unknown origin - less harsh than caustic soda-type paint removers, water soluble and enviro friendly. Worth a try - pour some out rather than spray, and work it into the model with a kids paint brush, then rinse the dissolved paint in warm water before it dries again. Hope that is of use to you, and keep up the good work! Best wishes, Richard.
When I need to fix warped plastic I usually bring some water to a boil then hold the item (using tongs!) in the steam. I find it softens the plastic enough to re-shape it. I've never tried anything as large as this shuttle wing, so I don't know how well it will work here (and I don't have one these, sadly!) but it might be worth a try if nothing else is working. Just don't burn yourself! Well done to get it this far! Great video.

One of my dream toy ! Hope to get this shuttle someday even with fix work to do. Thanks for the video.
I love your videos! I just started my shuttle restoration myself. One wing is just fine and the other is broken in the places you pointed out. That wing is also bent like yours. I'm looking forward to the next video.
Love watching your techniques for fixing and cleaning. About to start on A vintage Snowspeeder. I was thinking about the battery compartment, I wonder if the previous owner was trying to customise it so the engines lit up, and had painted it to stop light leaks? Not lucky enough to have an original but did get the Saga collection version, which was basically the same model, though doesn't contain the electronics, so will be interesting to see what they were. I'm guessing engine/ blaster sounds etc similar to other Kenner/Palitoy releases.
Dear Dave, I know that this video was from 7 years ago but to help you maybe to remove that old spary varnish other shuttle try either using a slurry of baking soda and a soft sponge and or using non acetone nail polish remover this can be good for light cleaning on plastic PVC based toys. I hope you see this and like the idea. Thank you.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 great restoration video by the way ,keep 'em comming.
I seem to recall the larger-flatter top surfaces of my brother's F-14 were extremely glossy- but he also stored his painting supplies in the same cabinet. I'm wondering if it wasn't some sort of mould release Kenner used on larger parts, or if the plastics got solvent-fume polished (since part of the example you are showing was painted)
Hi, I have just started on a restoration, and I noticed that your restoration didn’t have the stainless steel leaf spring for the wings. What are they for? They just seem to get in the way. Great videos, thanks
I tried all sort of things. This wing is not going to go back to being flat. It's spent too long bent and the construction won't let you take it apart.
I know I’m late to this party and maybe you have used it in other more recent videos but have you considered silicon grease for the gears? Great restoration by the way 😊
Theres a modelers putty the is very workable called (The Green Stuff) allows you to mold it then it hardens as hard as a rock. It would be a could fix for that area that had part of the post holder busted just to complet the tube.
Got the repair kit and it fits great, but the springs are missing, too. Originals are way too expensive. Where can I get replacements? Seems to be a leg spring (Schenkelfeder). But, I guess, it has to be more specific. Does anyone know the diameter and how strong it has to be?
i may have tried straight on boiling water, or just letting the wing sit in room temperature water for a day or two to replace the moisture lost over time. i think a problem is that it's not being evenly heated enough to release the tension. obviously these things never went through a plastic annealing process else you wouldn't get the cracking and crazing, but it is what it is, lol. too bad these are too rare to experiment with, then i would have tried a hair dryer, heat gun or even an oven.
Hey toy polloi, I am restoring a vintage imperial shuttle, and I am wondering if it would be safe to spray paint it white to hide the scratches on the surface. What do you think?
Is there a reason you used super glue and not the plastic weld that you've used on other restorations? I'm looking to fix the same issue on my top fin separating and curious for the choice in glue. Love your videos, thanks!
The varnish looked like a failed retrobright treatment... It happens when there isn't an equal amount of UV hitting the surface area of the plastic... That happens with globs of retrobright is unevenly distributed on the surface.
Only seen it as a toy during the starwars tour at my local museum number of years ago didn't know there was a toy version only ISP 6 from the ads on TV
Ebay or one of the many facebook groups are probably your best bet.

Hello ! I have finally find such a beauty but it misses the handle grip. I'd like to contact the 3D artist linked under the video but Turbosquid do not provide contact. Is it possible to have his mail to ask him if he could create the handle grip I miss for the shuttle ? I could not find this part or I do not know the good website to find this piece. Thanks for your help !
Does anybody know someone who makes and sells these 3D printed parts? I don't yet own a 3D printer so I'll need to rely on someone to provide these parts. Genius design to address broken peg issue which is the case on one of my wings. Thanks for any help finding someone who sells these parts.
Hi, I contacted the TurboSquid place about the replacement parts. You can only purchase the 3D print file from them, is there a way to get the parts straight out? I need these to put my shuttle back together, thanks!
Hi. Do you Know how to get the landinggear out? The shuttle I bought have them turned the wrong way. I'm affraid just pulling them very hard to get them out, and the chance of breaking the taps on them.. any ideas?

My pleasure! Thanks for the tip!

That's a great story.....
Kenner has always been delivering beautiful vehicles. This one is amazing.
3D printing is definitely the future of toy repair.

Oooft. Tackling the Shuttle! i've never owned a Shuttle and am looking forward to seeing right inside one here.
This was the last Star Wars ship/ vehicle I ever got for Christmas. I was gifted figures until I was 35. But no more ships. But what a ship to end on.
Thanks for the upload Dave, looking forward to part 2 :)

I have one in my grandparent’s house, and when I was younger I would battle this and the Millenium Falcon for HOURS.
I always use a hair dryer on high heat to straighten wings out. It works very well.
Looking good so far!
I like the weathered varnish finish by the end of the vid. It looks like the ship has been the rough the ravages of space travel...
Fantastic work as always Dave.
I love your videos! I just started my shuttle restoration myself. One wing is just fine and the other is broken in the places you pointed out. That wing is also bent like yours. I'm looking forward to the next video.
Who knew a toy could have such a complicated mechanism? The varnish doesn't look that bad, looks a bit like weathering and makes the panels pop
Great video, I have the later version from 2006, a great toy and huge!
My holy grail toy!
great video look forward to part 2 your video,s are great and informative as well

I had the tab that holds the cog break off on my shuttle. I drove a screw through the top of the cog into the wing and it is working perfectly.

Interesting, never knew these existed! I had a small version of the shuttle as a kid, a lot smaller actually. It was called ISP-6
Very nice Dave. This is a vehicle that i gave up 8 years ago when I divorced my first wife and I don't think I'll ever see one again.
Why'd you have to give it up?
@7:06 can that be repaired? The wings are in great shape but that peg broke on both

How do you go about sourcing replacement Springs for the wing mechanism if they are needed?
Have you ever tried taking it out of the hot water, shaping it, and then shocking it in cold water? I’ve had luck with bent accessories doing that
I tried all sort of things. This wing is not going to go back to being flat. It's spent too long bent and the construction won't let you take it apart.

If you swipe parts from a later reissue, won't you just be stuck with a reissue with missing parts instead?

I wouldn't as I don't like to paint things that weren't painted in the first place. But it's up to you.
Great video! Quick question does anyone in the UK supply the replacement decals for this ship?
You can get a pdf of them from toypolloi.com for free and print them yourself.

My shuttle's cargo bay door has yellowed more than the ship. Any advice on how to make it match again?
Deyellow it a bit so it matches.
@@toypolloi Will peroxide do the job or will it discolor it?
It will de-yellow it, which sounds like what you need. Personally I would just leave it as is. Cheers
Hi. Do you Know how to get the landinggear out? The shuttle I bought have them turned the wrong way. I'm affraid just pulling them very hard to get them out, and the chance of breaking the taps on them.. any ideas?
If you are worried, take the ship apart and push them from the inside.
I have taken it apart, but can't get fully to the buttom, Because two stickers covering two screws. I don't want to remove the original stickers. So I can't remove the cockpit fully. Ok. I think I just pulled them out in this one. Have you watched the other video? As I really can't remember what I did.
Yeah. But no where in the video (either part One or two) are you removing the landinggear :( Because in your case, they are sitting correct
Ok, then I can't help. I've not worked on one of these ships since I filmed these two videos.
Did you happen to know how to fix the wings on this ship? The left wing wont close all the way up. It will just fall about a third the way down.
+Leander Monte Have you taken the ship apart? What is broken inside? Many things can break on this ship.
True but I dont think anything is broken honestly. Its just not sitting in the right spot. But how can I get in there get a better look?
+Leander Monte Do the same as I do in this video. It takes a bit of time to get them lined up.
This thing must have been born falling apart
hey so I acidently forced my left wing down and now it wont fold all the way up, would i just need to buy new gears?

always wanted 1 of these, I was bidding on 1 on eBay, ended up going for over £100 so had to give up :(

Theres printing websites that you send the file to.
I just bought one Imperial Shuttle Repair Wing Gear. And found that the wing position was imbalance. I should have bought 2 😭😭
Not the magic marker marks on the battery compartment. I'm guessing they painted it because they didn't know how to remove the marks.
Paying full asking price for a good complete boxed vintage one of these definitely has contributed to many a divorce for sure!
Stickers are always the problem
All sorted in part 2. And much better than what is currently available.
Did you record the process of making the stickers, David? If you didn't have them made already, that is.
+allluckyseven I recorded some of it, and a small bit appears in the next video. But it took a long time to do spread out over two days.
Not sure if you have tried this: notaglue.com/ . I have used it on a couple of items and it works very well in fixing cracks.
