- On March 25, 2001, at the 73rd Academy Awards, "Things Have Changed" was awarded the Oscar for Best Original Song. At the time, Dylan was touring Australia. He and his band performed the song in a segment recorded in Sydney, that was inserted into the Academy Awards broadcast via a satellite link.
Bob STILL stands head and shoulders above the rest.
that's right, I do!
I started listening to bob dylan in my 20's. I'm now in my 70's and I'm still listening to bob dylan
me too
Asunda Speed Same here ,71 and bobs never outa reach.. long may he live and me to listen
Saw him in 1963 and I was hooked on him and his sound
Same here ( 66 y old ) and only for the music my english is so poor :)
He has evolved and stayed creatively vital all the while!!
A roomful of celebrities watching a true giant
You Sir have made such a wonderful comment. So True.
He's not actually that big, he's just on a very large screen. I understand the confusion though.
@@MikeTheGamerGuy 👏
Nailed it. Glaringly apparent as they cut back and forth.
Come on King Charles ...a knighthood for Bob ,ye hah ...Sir Bob
One of the most deserving Best Song wins in history.
One thing I have always appreciated about Bob Dylan is his sense of humor. He has so much subtlety and nuance that he makes me listen more closely, and it makes for a great experience time and again. It is not easy being him, and the fact that he is still alive is a testament to his strength and sense of purpose. He still inspires.
I listen to nothing but Dylan to and from work, just to hear every little nuance and inflection!
And in relatively good shape.
I care.....
Who wouldn't have humour with the amount of cash that Bobby's received.
@@coconuciferanuts339 When you are dealing with Art - Money is a Non-Factor.. The creation comes from the SOUL.
The best acceptance speech ever. Dylan seems to be such a movie buff, winning the Oscar must have been such a thrill for him. I love his last line “God bless everyone with peace, tranquility, and goodwill “. Love it
,,Peace, tranquility..." just that combination is beautiful ❤️ long live the laurel poet port Bob.
I thought the same thing about his last line
He loved that and so did the band ,great😄
Still Standing.... You Rock my life..born in 1947 and still Rockin...
You can’t be any cooler than Bob.
A Bob? Any Bob??
@@AA-sn9lz the Bob
Agreed
You mean Robert Zimmerman? ^^
This is the best vocal performance I've ever heard from Bob. Amazing interpretation
Yeah the more I watch it the more the thing stands out. Keeps you gripped, and it sort of builds toward the end, he adds a lot to the song itself with the performance
Take it in kids, that was the last true musical performance at any BS award gathering......
At End of song ?

There's Dylan and then there's everyone else. He stands alone!
‘I’m first amount equals, second to none. The last of the best. BD
Bob Dylan sang my life. There he is, getting awarded for it. I can't imagine a world without Bob Dylan.
Your life sang Bob Dylan.
Like another musician who built a career emulating Bob once said… Bob has you from the cradle to the grave. His scope is so big that no matter what is happening in your life, he wrote a song about it.
Good to be alive in the Time of Dylan
Couldn't put it better than that...
You are so right! I will alway's love and listen to bob dylan music! I'm now 75yrs old. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎
I was fortunate to see him with Santana at the coliseum in Verona Italy
@@corazondeoro9351
I saw him at Slane Castle near Dublin in 1983. I swear he was looking right at me and singing straight to me...
Bob looks like a he's trolling the audience from deep within the soul of a David Lynch film. Wild-eyed, twisted, menacing. It's FUCKING GLORIOUS.
I love your last 2 words. FG!
Yeah! He was really living that academy award, glorious indeed, and killer delivery on the song of course!
As Jordan Peterson said Dangerous men get respected and to have any relevance in this world you have to be dangerous. Well this Dylan cat is and always was.
I saw that look decades ago when he sang “ Ballad of a thin man”. Dylan’s contempt for the media and critics when he went “electric”. Yep he bad
Lmao imagine unironically taking anything Jordan Peterson says seriously ^
Only one of those songs still matters two decades later. And it's the one that won. Well done Academy.
"People are crazy and times are strange, I'm locked in tight, I'm outta range, I used to care, but, things have changed" ......my mindset to a T!
There is NOBODY like Bob Dylan...I was lucky to have seen the legend in the 80’s performing with Tom Petty...fan since a wee lil girl...my older brother loved him and would play the guitar...I was hooked...a little obsessed with him these days...his music is like an opera...you may not hear every word, but you understand the meaning...
A lot of us understand what you mean when you say "a little obsessed"
So... the wonderful words and the honest and humble acceptance of an award that was his before being given.. In my opinion, one of the best acceptance speeches. I know he messed up some of them before - but he made up for it on this one- so plain and from the heart . Much love.
I was Security @ Channel Nine studios Artarmon AUSTRALIA. where the live-crossover was filmed that day.
My own little 'personal brag' about all this is :
I was standing 20ft away as Dylan & the band played this. & the footage here really does not capture the 'DAMN' he showed when he won, He really was stunned & was easy to see that i dont think he expected to win it.
Wasn't hard to see his pride & surprise after the cameras stopped & all his people flooded him, hugging & backslapping him.
Was pretty cool to watch as an outsider.
Prior to it all he seemed so composed & in-control.
Was a crazy day, The band/crew arrived early & were busy setting it all up in Studio 2. Very outta the ordinary 'Sunday'
We'd been advised by my boss, THE legendary Mr John Bennett
( Y'all Nine Staffers will remember John & his equally awesome brother, Wayne- 'The Kray Bro's :D ),
that we were not to engage the 'artist' in conversation nor request photographs or autographs.
At some point before Dylan arrived we were outside having a ciggy when some of the crew walked up & said 'G'day', Top fellers, Charlie Sexton was amongst them & he was a great guy, I've said -
' Wow... Charlie Sexton, I bought your record' & the cheeky bastard FLOORED me when he grinned & said-
"So.... You were the one" ....
:D
AWESOME Memories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TCN 9 Artarmon oh yeah! I worked there in the early 70's...Editing for Mike Willisee..must have been amazing with Dylan!
Wonderful recollection, Dazza G - thanks so much :-0)
Precious! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing this special story ... Love it ❣
Great story Dazza G! 🎶
Met Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival in 1963. He taught a workshop--about 40 kids sitting on the ground. He was shy and sweet and asked if he could look at my old Goya guitar-- handed it over and he tuned it. We shook hands. Saw him live 22 times. Still remember 1963.
Wow. I'd probably faint.

That has to be the coolest story I have ever heard! This is the best rendition of his song ever.
Agreed. His band's top notch. The overall feel was just right.

“God bless you all with peace tranquility and good will”
Bless you Bob. A True Poet of our times.
An amazing moment in Dylan's life. Outstanding song, played live, huge reward, great speech.
Dylan *still*, as of the fantastic show I saw Oct 14 2019, includes an Oscar statue onstage with its own special little table and light, whenever he performs live.
I started listening to Bob Dylan in my 60,s now I,m in my 20,s and still listening...
I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

I watched this, and I was SO HAPPY that Bob won an Oscar!!!!!
Even the nominees were thrilled. The academy got it right.
He's always been magnificent. At 79, now he has a new #1 album on the charts, Rough and Rowdy Ways. Amazing !
What a performance come from a million miles away and with a presence that takes over everything. . You can feel that most of the audience wants to be like him but they are what they are, and Bob holds the mirror- great that Oscar is little for it.
This is amazing....
"A song that doesn´t pussyfoot around or turn a blind eye to human nature" , so it was perfect as a sort of an epilogue to "Wonderboys". And to me, right up there in the top 20 or 30 of his best songs
Isn't it awesome to be able to speak of top 20 or 30 of one man's songs?!?!

In front of King & Queen, Noble prize recipients, celebrities, cameras & microphones. Search 2:20 to 5:40. Her experience & explanation . She was performing Dylans " Hard rain gonna fall "
No one more deserving than Mr. Dylan. What an amazing person and talent!
That was wild seeing his facial expressions! Entire new level of fascination we barely can see otherwise. Wow.
a man in his own right. dose want he feels, follows his own mind. stands all by himself and self made. bows to no one and wants no one to bow to him. its rare rare thing in this world.
Oh, I didnt bow and look how I ended up.
A whole world in each glance. The man can watch you to the bones.
"I'm trying to get as far away from myself as I can" is my favorite lyric of all-time.
Bob is on a completely different level than the Hollywood gang in the audience. The contrast is almost painful. Thanks Bob for pushing out to new boundaries.
Well stated.
This is my favorite performance, song, video of all time. enough said.
We now know the one way to stun Bob Dylan: Give him an Oscar.
That Oscar is on stage with him at every concert. Usually somewhere near the piano. But it's always there.
Yes I've seen it on many live performances now that you pointed that out.
I saw him in Philadelphia in December 2019. The Oscar was there. Haha.
I never knew this . So cool. Aww Bob youre a living treasure.
You know I saw it last night in a performance and I wondered about it. Now that mystery is solved. But the real question is why would he actually do that? Someone must have been in charge of making sure it was always there. I’m not sure the answer is obvious. Maybe- but that’s a question I would ask him
Bob Dylan's Oscar must be protected at all costs
About the most real thing that has happened at the Oscars in the last 30 years.
Only one word describes this man born on my birthday 1o0years before AWESOME
BD…is without a doubt the best poet and song writer of all time…and I love his voice
The G.O.A.T. - and as always accompanied by a fabulous band.
This song a callback to one of his first breakout hits- the times they are a changing... a song written by a younger, more idealistic man who thought his generation would usher in a more compassionate, less warlike world.
A time when he used to care... but things Have changed.
Be patient
Great song. He sounds great. First Bob Dylan album I bought and listened to was called BLONDE ON BLONDE" in 1967. I was15 years old. Still have it. He influenced a lot of musicians. Thank you for the post. God bless you. 💗➕💗🎸
A simple defining thing - those who Know Dylan, and those who do not.
I'm not sure you can top this performance...he's untouchable
He is out of range 😉
God level. Unattainable.
Cool congrats Bob Dylan as a great simg and album and him and the Fisherman share a synchronicity of sorts I think. Tommy Matola, cool. Great new music and hope to see it live
A big part who he is as a pop figure is his facial expressions, he was always fucking with everybody's minds, I love it.
Something so sexy about Bob Dylan . Great talent.

At age 59 in this Academy Awards Show performance, Bobby still ' "had it".
Love it, just love it. So creative.

Masterpiece.
Praises be to Robert Zimmerman! He never ceases to amaze me how prolific he writes, and how simply sweet he can make it sound. His most recent song Murder Most Foul truly describes a sentiment found in a post JFK time period. Thank you Mr Dylan for ALL your words, through ALL these years!

Stop grinning, audience. He'll outlive you all.

I love this guy, his voice is not the best but it’s still full of emotion, lyrically I don’t think he’s ever been matched
His voice wasn't "the best" from the get-go...but it was always the best for him.
Saying Dylan is a bad singer is on the same level of ignorance as saying Van Gogh was a poor painter.

This song was a worthy winner. I listen to it again and again now and didn't know it was 20 years old. I think it sums up these mad Covid times very well.
The crowd hangs on every god damn word he says. ❤️🌺
James Malveira he’s truthful and won’t pervert himself with propaganda NOT EVEN CONVOLUTED NOBEL .
H
That's cause he's a wordsmith unparalleled and he never wastes your time. He's also been at this for a very long time. Lot's changed since '63, and he's been there for it all. And hasn't it been grand? Well, the music anyway.
Scott Evans He can’t sing, his playing is competent, though not accomplished, his lyrical sense overrated. In no way should this joker been given the Nobel in literature. Many equally talented songwriters who are musicians, and not assholes personally.
J. Dallison Gee, now why would a little honest critique of your hero bring forth such a comment? You seem to have used that line before, in other posts. Remember?
I loved this song when it came out so I bought the CD and it won the Academy Awards, Awesome Bob you're the best.
