Zoom 505 demo: blast from the late 90's

- Zoom was first off the block at the beginning of the super-compact multi-effects stompbox era. And the 505 was not a bad start. There are plenty of effects that compete perfectly well with bigger 'pro' units and even the distortions, although clearly digital, get the job done competently.
Had this when I was a kid and now I want it again.
It was a revolution at the time!
and as time continues to slowly churn it's ragged cogs, this video too has become... a blast from the past
Still got mine too, i like the chorus, flanger and the lead distortion.
Man I loved this back in the day!
Sean T yeah it's mind-blowing when you're a teenager and you try one of these for the first time, it's like a whole world of sound opens up. Thanks for watching Gearfacts!
Sean T still love it to this day. Lol
Long live 505!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only the talented understood................
Yep, it was a defining moment for guitar pedals. Thanks for watching Gearfacts!
I still have mine and use it in front of an old beat up Peavey combo. Dialing in tones takes a ton of patience with these things.. The UN-intelligent pitch shifting can inspire some pretty interesting shit.
The blues setting was the best
i just found one in a pawn shop. they could not find a power cord to it, so they sold it to me as is for 5$ i had a power cord. it was money well spent
It's unbelievable how these things you used to have to SAVE UP for are now literally spare change!!
@@gearfacts and it a fun toy
I used the 'double' effect all the time, these are really good pedals to use for a couple of effects. I love the 'step' function as well, never seen it on another pedal.
Yes step is a favorite of mine too. It has a more advanced form on the earlier Zoom 3030, where the 'steps' could be made to have smoothed-out transitions ...it created a wonderful Dave Gilmour solo effect. But they've never put that feature on a pedal since then! :) #gearfacts
@@gearfacts I've not seen it on another pedal - and the only song I've heard it is on Mr Bungle's 'The Bends'. It actually sounds quite sweet here: ua-cam.com/video/2eoshSRV5oE/v-deo.html
Brian May also used this effect. You can hear it on Queen's song "Headlong".
@@gearfacts I have a Zoom G1X on which has the Step effect. Best pedal I've bought, it has pretty much every single effect pedal emulated
I still play this one it's fun to play around with when I'm just messing around!!!!
Yup. People take these things WAYYYY to seriously, just have fun with it ppl! :) #gearfacts
memories
Still got mine, even after having it gone through, and all the connections re-soldered etc.!
same here, i changed the pushbuttons several times, and resolder all inputs/outputs several times too, but still working...
+revolutionday1 Me too! It's been dropped, got wet etc. Still going to this day! I've always used a power supply with it, never a nine volt battery.....I've taken it apart and cleaned the switches with contact cleaner and good as new.
Still have mine though one pedal kinda has trouble switchin..great pedal I loved the chorus I have still the paperwork and box haha..
it was easy to switch, press the Store Button 5 second and the mode of switch change
and now you can select next effect (it blinks) and when you press both pedals the effect changes
Any chance you could post patch set-up for the first sound you used (C1), would appreciate it greatly.
Sold it ages ago, friend, but if I ever get another one I'll remember your message and get back to you.

Hi! I always use stompbox pedals and rarely a basic pedalboard, but I remember that some of my 90's pedals that millennials today consider rubbish Josh Scott founder of JHS Pedals now considers them a cult and good quality gear, such as DOD and some ibanez (not the tubescreamer), I had only a couple of weeks a ZOOM 1010 and I think it was of very good quality and response for the price and I'm getting nostalgic for those pedals of that time, I think they would not collide with my Soundblox, Earthquakerdevices, Mojo Hand , Mad Professor, Keeley, Radial, Strymon, etc etc, but I have a question, I understand that you can make presets, can you combine more than 3 effects simultaneously or more?
Regards from México City!!
That's right, you can actually combine about 7 effects on the Zoom 505 :) GF
@@gearfacts Thank you body, I'm gonna bidd one in eBay. Regards!
It's definitely worth a look, even if you only want a few of the effects. Enjoy!
how many effects at the same time? I guess around the 90s these DSP chips didn't handle much compared to now.
Sacco Belmonte more than you might expect, I think it could do about 8 at once. Thanks for watching Gearfacts!
awesome, I entered the Zoom customer family with the G5 and the MT100BT and I gotta say I love them. Didn't know Zoom was on this since such a long time.
I still have mine from like 1998. It still works good and I have never had to take it apart.......wish I could say the same for my ADA MP1. I have rebuilt that thing twice, resoldered most of it, tried several different tubes, changed several caps, and replaced anything that just didn't look right. It works good when it wants to, and usually responds to a good smack on the top, but it's in a rack full of stuff, making that hard to do. It has always been microphonic on high gain patches, sometimes breaking into an acoustic feedback on it's own if it gets too close to the speakers.
Are these effects just as is or can you change the timing and the amount of the effects, etc? These are better than effects from today.
Yeah man you can edit all parameters :) Gearfacts
which one would you recommend this Zoom 505 or the Zoom 505ii? thanks
+CeSaR MaRtInEz Virtually no difference - In my opinion, be guided by price and ergonomics when making this choice.
Ok, so actually there is not much of difference among them. it's only price matter
I think the biggest factor is how fun it is to use... a lot of people get trapped in this idea of what's the 'best' sound and they forget that playing music is meant to be fun. Buy what feels good :)
Sitting on the bed ...cup of coffee + joint + cheap guitar + 505 + headphones... Those were the day's....had them all.and sold them all 503 to 510 even the bass 506. To be honest a 510 503 507 508 509 set up was better than most thing's on the market at the time even just the 3,8,9 made a good set up .
Yep these 50- series pedals were a big leap forward in the effects market. Zoom has given us lots of fun over the years.
Sounds like 1998 Aria Pro II plugged into my Crate 2x12 GXT simple times.....
:) #gearfacts
Do you reckon you could gig with this Muti effects pedal
Not in any serious way, really. This is a pedal that was intended for home use. Having said that, most listeners probably wouldn't notice the difference (only us guitar players would) haha /Gearfacts
Ahhh, the choice pedal for the broke guitarist lol
Sounds best through a stereo, or Pa, because it is high fidelity. The 505 II is better, because you can change patches without the clunky pause of this one. Here's a clip of mine (Smooth out your EQ, and this rocks)ua-cam.com/video/eF_f23ZKm-k/v-deo.html
The manual???????? :/
It's easy, just google 'zoom 505 pdf' and it'll probably be the first result.

I SAID, "...what?"
Where?
WHAT?
